In the large model range of Zhiguli cars, the VAZ-21074 stands apart. A powerful engine with a displacement of 1569 cm 3 gave it the right at that time to be considered the fastest rear-wheel drive sedan that rolled off the assembly line of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant.

On the first models of the 7th series, the engine was similar to the 5th model. Only a little later they began to install a more powerful engine from the no less popular VAZ-2106 car.

The brake system did not change and was inherited from the prototype model - VAZ 2105. Initially, these cars were almost identical, but, nevertheless, they had certain distinctive features, namely:

  • shape of the hood and trunk;
  • radiator screen;
  • rear lights;
  • chrome bumper trims.

The car has proven itself to be unpretentious in operation, and the cost of spare parts is in an affordable price segment. This aspect is one of the main factors that positively influences the buyer’s choice (in favor of the VAZ-21074). We will consider the technical characteristics of components and assemblies in more detail below.

Design features of the fuel tank and the possibility of modification

The technical documentation for this car states that it holds only 39 liters of fuel. However, car enthusiasts have proven experimentally that when filling “under the neck” you can pour in up to 45 liters. Such fuel tanks were installed on the entire VAZ family, starting with model 2101. Standard 40 liters of fuel are enough for 451 kilometers.

To prevent refueling from taking longer, modifications to the “seven” were in vogue in the nineties of the last century. Many people installed an additional gasoline tank in these cars, which eliminated the need to carry cans with them. Due to the design features of the main tank, the additional tank was placed in the trunk of the car. In some cases, he filled the entire space of this compartment. On the one hand, this is convenient for moving long distances, but on the other hand, another problem arises - it becomes difficult to transport goods.

In addition, due to this modification, the cabin may smell strongly of gasoline, which is unpleasant and can cause poisoning from fuel vapors.

Engine and transmission

The engine from the VAZ-2106 was installed on the VAZ-21074 model without any modifications. The technical characteristics of the engine made it possible to achieve a power of 74 hp. With. There are 2 valves per cylinder. The “five” had a belt drive of the camshaft, which made the engine less noisy. However, a belt is less reliable than a chain. Therefore, on a more powerful engine, it was decided to leave the timing chain transmission unchanged.

The gearbox compares favorably with its predecessors. It has a fifth speed, the gear ratio of which is 0.819. All other speeds have lower gear ratios compared to previous analogues. As a result, the gearbox operates more “softly”. The rear axle gearbox with self-locking differentials has 22 splines - it was borrowed from the VAZ-2106 model.

The suspension of the front pair of wheels is independent. The rear suspension has a rigid beam. This design significantly improved the car's stability when cornering.

Injector

The first injection VAZ-21074 appeared only in 2006. Car enthusiasts were enthusiastic about the new product and preferred to buy cars with such an injection system.

Despite the fact that the cost of such a car was higher, the complexity of the equipment (the presence of a computer unit, a number of sensors) meant slightly higher operating costs, but at the same time a number of advantages appeared, namely:

  1. Lower fuel consumption compared to the carburetor model.
  2. Easy engine starting (especially in cold weather).
  3. The influence of fuel quality on the nature of engine operation was neutralized.
  4. Stable engine operation at idle speeds, which are much lower than those of carburetor models.

The installation of a modern injection system has opened up new opportunities for VAZ-21074 owners. The injector allows you to change the technical characteristics very quickly - reprogramming the control unit can make the engine more economical or, conversely, more powerful and responsive. There is no need to change the engine design in any way.

Vehicle specifications

Already at the development stage, the manufacturer determines the parameters of the machine, which are refined during the testing process. So, in the described car, model VAZ 2107, the volume of the fuel tank corresponds to the size of the niche in the trunk behind the right wheel arch. Crankcases of other mechanisms contain the following quantities of operating fluids:

  • engine – 3.75 liters of engine oil;
  • cooling jackets, radiator and expansion tank - 9.85 liters of antifreeze;
  • manual gearbox housing – 1.35 liters of TAD-17 oil;
  • rear axle - 1.3 liters of the same oil;
  • hydraulic clutch – 0.2 l of brake fluid;
  • steering gear housing – 0.215 l of hypoid oil;
  • closed container for windshield washer - 2 liters of water or special liquid.

Operating standards for the VAZ 2107 car were developed by the manufacturer for organizations and enterprises. Knowing the volume of fuel that the tank or crankcases of other mechanisms hold, it is easy to calculate the amount required for travel.

The VAZ 21074 is made in a sedan body - both in the opinion of the plant’s designers and in the opinion of car enthusiasts, a sedan is the most convenient “box” for both personal use and for cargo transportation.

It is worth noting that the carrying capacity of the machine indicated in the technical documents (1430 kg) is underestimated. Surely you have more than once seen a “four” loaded to maximum, on which neighbors were transporting things or bags of potatoes. Until now, in any market, a fairly large number of sellers use the VAZ 21074 to transport goods. Do not forget that initially the model was not created for the transportation of goods in principle!

Based on its geometry, the niche between the side members begs for a kind of organizer for tools, spare parts and small items, which you can easily assemble with your own hands from chipboard or pressed plywood. The cover of this organizer will be a false floor. The result is two independent compartments - one for hardware, the second for luggage.

The design is quite simple to assemble. For assembly, you will need to cut five blanks (or more, depending on the desired number of niches under the raised floor):

  • 580x115 mm - three pieces, two of them will lie along the side members, and one will be a partition in the center;
  • 780x115 mm - will fit between the rear bumper mounting pipes;
  • 840x115 mm - the farthest side, between the thrust cups of the springs.

The structure is screwed together using furniture screws; the false floor itself, the size of the cover of the first tier, will be the same as the dimensions and contours of the perimeter of the resulting niche.

It is better to screw the hinges to it not in place, but by fixing the lid with several screws and removing the entire structure from the trunk, in a convenient place, on a workbench, for example. After this, you can sheathe the resulting organizer with any material - from leatherette to carpet. As a result, the trunk is always tidy, the floor is level and clean.

Replacement of gas tank and major repairs

Regardless of what type of fuel injection is used on your vehicle, the process for removing the tank will be the same. First drain all fuel from it. Next, carry out the following work:

  1. Remove the plastic casing from the container. To do this, you will need to unscrew several screws using a Phillips screwdriver.
  2. Disconnect the wires from the contacts leading to the fuel sensor.
  3. Use pliers to pry off the fuel hose.
  4. Unscrew the bolt of the tension plate that secures the gas tank.
  5. Remove the cap from the neck and carefully remove the tank.

Assess its condition. If there are several leaks or they are too large, then it will be easier to replace the entire fuel container. To do this, simply take a new tank and reassemble it in the reverse order.

If you do not have the opportunity to buy a new container, then stock up on:

  • fiberglass;
  • epoxy resin;
  • acetone;
  • sanding paper.

First, dry the tank thoroughly; if you start repairs immediately after dismantling, you will be disappointed with the result. Next, proceed to repair work:

  1. Cut the fiberglass into pieces so that they completely cover the leaks or holes.
  2. Impregnate the material with epoxy resin.
  3. Lay the fiberglass cloth over the leak area and level it so that there are no bubbles on the surface. Remove excess resin. The first layer is the most important, so take your time.
  4. Dry the patches, then putty them and paint them with primer.

Electric trunk lock

Now it’s time to deal with the trunk lid. If you're going to do some revision, do it until the end. There are several options for how to improve the VAZ 2107 trunk lock, remote, with a button and with an electric drive. Such tricks are explained by the fact that it is not always convenient to turn off the engine to open the trunk. And if you install an electric drive, then if you have an installed alarm system, it is easy to make a remote control of the lock.

Any electromagnetic lock can serve as an actuator. There are several varieties of them on sale; they may differ in size and stroke. The electric lock is attached directly to the trunk lid, preferably closer to the hinges, in order to reduce the load on them when opening the lid. The ideal solution for traction would be a cable or a strong steel guitar string, one end of which is attached to the lock tongue, and the other to the eye of the stem.

The connection diagram for the electric lock is shown in the photo, and the actuator must be turned on through any VAZ relay with four contacts. If there is an alarm, you can also include an electric lock in its circuit, then the trunk will open both from a button in the cabin and from the alarm remote control.

Roof rack VAZ 2107

Thanks to the presence of gutters on the roof of the VAZ 2107, as on any classic Zhiguli, you can install a standard Zhiguli roof rack on the roof. You can do it yourself, but the most inexpensive option for a removable trunk will cost 1200-2100 rubles, so there is no particular point in reinventing the wheel. The overall size of the VAZ 2107 roof rack is 1300x1050x215 mm, and its load capacity is up to 50 kg.

The design of the trunk can be either classic or in the form of a box, which can also be mounted not only on roof rails, as in modern cars, but also on gutters. The box is more streamlined and stylish, but less spacious. However, in any case, the load on the roof pillars should not exceed 60-70 kg.

The VAZ-2107 is a modified luxury version of the VAZ-2105, which, in turn, traces its origins to the Fiat 124, a subcompact family sedan from 1966 (winner of the 1967 European Car of the Year). The VAZ-2107 was exported under the names Lada Nova, Lada Riva, Lada Signet, Lada 1500

From 2002 to 2012, the VAZ-21070 (modification of the VAZ-2107) was produced in Ukraine (LuAZ, ZAZ and KrASZ [4]). In May 2008, the assembly of LADA 2107 was launched at Argun in the Chechen Republic [5]. Since March 2011, the production of LADA 2107 has been mastered by the Izhevsk Automobile Plant.

In April 2012, the AvtoVAZ concern, managed by Igor Komarov, decided to finally stop production of the classic LADA 2107 sedan. This decision was made due to the greatly decreased demand for this model, as well as due to the acceleration of work in Izhevsk to prepare production for the release of the Lada Granta. The last LADA 2107 sedan rolled off the assembly line on April 17, 2012 [6]. In Egypt, LADA 2107 was assembled until the beginning of 2014 [7].

Production of the 2104 station wagon, unified with the sedan in terms of power plant, exterior and interior of the front part of the body, continued until September 17, 2012 [8].

How to detect a leaking gas tank

VAZ 2114: last year of production

There is no need to worry about noticing a leaking gas tank. If gasoline escapes from the fuel tank, this will be accompanied by the following symptoms:

  • Significant increase in fuel consumption. It’s hard not to notice that gas is running out, even if the car is parked.
  • There will be a distinct smell of gasoline inside the car.
  • Rainbow spots will remain on the asphalt where your VAZ 2107 was parked.

If at least one of the above signs occurs, most likely, your VAZ 2107 with an injector system actually has a leak in the gas tank. There are several options for action in this situation; we will divide them into emergency and planned.

Emergency gas tank repair

If your car’s gas tank leaks on the highway and you can’t get to the nearest car service center without repairs, you can use a few tricks that will help temporarily return the fuel tank to operation.

The simplest and most effective way: seal the gas tank with rubber or plastic. For this we need:

  • Superglue or ordinary glue moment.
  • A piece of rubber from a tire or a plastic bottle.

So, the first thing you need to do is find the place where the gas tank is damaged, where fuel is escaping. In the case of the VAZ 2107, the injector system is leaking most likely from below; its cause is a hole or corrosion damage. As soon as the damage is detected, we proceed as follows: cut out a piece of rubber or plastic, lubricate it with glue and press firmly against the damage. After a few minutes you can release the patch, it will finally set in a couple of hours, but in any case you can go. You can easily get to a car service center with such a patch; there are cases when car enthusiasts drove with it for several weeks.

Another way to seal a hole is with a regular self-tapping screw. Suitable if the damage is small in diameter and you have a rubber seal for the screw. This is done as follows:

  • First you need to find the location of the damage.
  • Then install the seal on it (a regular piece of a car inner tube will do).
  • Screw a self-tapping screw into the seal so that it fits into the gap in the gas tank and plugs it.

Scheduled repair of the gas tank

If you notice a leak and decide to fix it with your own hands, the first thing you need to do is dismantle the VAZ 2107 gas tank; the process is similar for both the carburetor and a car with an injector system.
