Priora automatic: new AMT gearbox and old automatic transmission from Corolla

New Lada model

Fans of domestic Lada Priora cars seem to have already lost hope that their cars will one day be equipped with an automatic transmission. Of course, this doesn’t upset most people much, because our drivers probably absorb the ability to drive a car with a manual transmission with their mother’s milk. But Russia is developing, cities are growing, colossal traffic jams are forming in them, so driving with a “handle” on the streets of megacities begins to be very annoying. In addition, women are increasingly driving domestic cars. And they really don’t like these three ill-fated pedals and the lever between the seats, which needs to be moved all the time. Therefore, automatic transmission on the Priora is a real necessity that should have been implemented a long time ago. Nevertheless, for many years now the domestic consumer has been fed empty promises. And if the Kalina is already equipped with an automatic transmission, the Priora is still supplied only with a traditional manual transmission. But the new Lada Priora is the most successful and comfortable car from VAZ.

Cable drive

At AvtoVAZ they decided to abandon the traction drive entirely, even despite the maximum simplicity and low cost of the system. Almost all automakers have long abandoned rods. A cable-driven gearbox was first introduced as an experiment at Samara. Then the components were purchased from Morse. However, that gearbox had a lower location of the shift mechanism, which made the use of cables quite problematic, frightening engineers and cost. The project was not closed, and the serial updated cable-driven gearbox appeared only recently.

Is it possible to install an automatic transmission on a Priora?

Lada Priora.
VAZ Priora This issue must be considered from the following angles:

  • is it technically possible to install an automatic transmission;
  • why they refused to install such a transmission at the factory;
  • are there automatic transmissions compatible with the Lada Priora?
  • whether such an installation would be legal and whether it would lead to problems with the traffic police and the insurance company.

Technically, installing an automatic transmission on a Priora is not difficult, because you don’t have to redo the body and engine, and replacing parts of the electrical system, including the ECU firmware and a number of parts of the gear selection mechanism, will not cause any difficulties for any experienced technician.

The only reason why AvtoVAZ refused to install a hydraulic automatic transmission was the rather high cost of the unit, because this automaker does not have its own automatic transmission, so it is necessary to use products from other companies.

The only supplier of automatic transmissions for AvtoVAZ is the Japanese company Jatco, owned by Nissan. Considering that the Russian auto giant is a subsidiary of the French Renault and more than half of the shares belong to the Renault-Nissan alliance, it was logical to install automatic transmissions of its own production on all Ladas. However, even in this case, the cost of a hydraulic automatic transmission is 90 thousand rubles, so only AMT (60 thousand rubles) and manual transmission (25–30 thousand rubles) were installed on the Priora.

The Jatco JF414E automatic transmission is fully compatible with both the body and all power units of the Lada Priora, so when installing it you won’t have to cut or overcook anything. However, installing such a transmission instead of a manual transmission or a robot is a change in the design of the car, so it can only be done after obtaining permission from the traffic police. Such permission is a formality, but to obtain it you will need to contact technical experts, because without their positive verdict you will not sign an application to change the design at the traffic police.

In addition, after installing a new unit, it is necessary to obtain a technical examination report on the safety of the vehicle design with the changes made to it, then undergo a technical inspection and re-issue documents for the car with the traffic police and the insurance company. You cannot drive a car without this, therefore, in addition to a fine and seizure of the car, you may also face cancellation of your insurance.

What prevents you from installing an automatic rifle from Kalina?

Automatic transmission

Many car enthusiasts are perplexed why the new Priora 2014 cannot be equipped with an automatic transmission from Kalina? After all, this gearbox has proven itself quite well, and the manufacturer Jatco is also listed among Japanese automakers. The bottom line is that Priora is a fundamentally new development by VAZ. If, for example, “Kalina” and “ten” are largely unified, then here you can see a completely different layout. To install a Jatco box on a Priora, half of the car would have to be redone, and first of all the body. By modifying the body parts, you can significantly reduce the structural rigidity, and the transmission mount itself, most likely, would not be very reliable.

In addition, a design with an automatic transmission from a Kalina would be very different from a car with a manual transmission. Accordingly, it would be necessary to produce additional spare parts, rebuild production on the assembly line, and refine assembly technology. The costs would not be worth it in the end. Considering that even small modernizations of production at VAZ cost huge sums, with such an alteration the car plant would greatly reduce its profitability.

The new robotic AMT gearbox is made in almost the same housing as the manual transmission, so there are no problems with its installation in the Priora body. Only 2 additional brackets are required for installation. Thanks to this, it was possible to achieve a minimal difference in price.

Most likely, VAZ therefore extended the production of the 2014 Priora with an automatic transmission for many years, because difficulties arose in finding the optimal automatic transmission model for this body. Due to technical complexity, even tuning enthusiasts did not en masse install an automatic transmission from Kalina on the Priora. Even if you digest the body and modify the remaining components, certain operational problems will still arise. For example, several craftsmen who finally decided on such a modernization were faced with the fact that the automatic transmission was poorly cooled.

We can only hope that the AMT gearbox will not be much inferior in reliability to the Jatco.

Problems when paying with bank cards

Lada Granta with automatic transmission

Sometimes difficulties may arise when paying with Visa/MasterCard bank cards. The most common of them:

  1. There is a restriction on the card for paying for online purchases
  2. A plastic card is not intended for making payments online.
  3. The plastic card is not activated for making payments online.
  4. There are not enough funds on the plastic card.

In order to solve these problems, you need to call or write to the technical support of the bank where you are served. Bank specialists will help you resolve them and make payments.

That's basically it. The entire process of paying for a book in PDF format on car repair on our website takes 1-2 minutes.

Guys, describe in more detail how to install this automatic transmission in a Priora, I physically can’t drive a manual and I can’t get a normal foreign car, and they sell junk here, one (of the foreign cars) I dug up the whole tyrnet and found it just in Chelyaba for 40 rubles they stick it in a Camry

All these alterations are not justified, it’s better to sell yours and the car and buy one with an automatic transmission, or wait until they release a Priora with it

They have been installing automatic machines from old Corollas for a long time. The asking price a year ago in Moscow time (I was interested in this topic) was 30k turnkey. Briefly: the 4-speed automatic is suitable for mounting, you just need to sharpen the splines on the internal grenade to fit the Toyota gearbox, install the selector in the cabin and tinker with the electrics.

I took the 12K for a ride from Bryansk, automatic from Honda)))

I also like the topic about the machine gun, I wanted to get confused

SST or DSG that's the power

After the automatic transmission you will want a sequential car))) why will you install it?!))))

and installing an automatic transmission is nonsense)) The game is not worth the candle. )) My opinion. A lot of money will go away.

thank you any information is useful)

Have a look there, maybe something else will be useful.

but only a cable gearbox also makes sounds like a simple one(

you just insulted all SRT and GT-R owners

Is it a crazy idea or what?)

wait for the new Priora, they should appear in 2014, there will be a robot, but installing an automatic on a stock Priora yourself is complete nonsense!

Better cable box and 127th intake)

I thought about this too))

if you do all this yourself, then there won’t be any problems with the installation... everything is “practically” the same as installing a new mechanic, naturally there will be some nuances, but if your hands are in the right place, then it won’t be too much of a strain;). The most problematic thing for you will be to make friends between the brains of the engine and the brains of the automatic transmission)))

As far as I know, many VAZ car dealerships already supply Priora automatic machines to order. Price in district 70 rubles

Gearbox functions

Jatco jf414e-automatic transmission Lada Granta

The gearbox is installed on cars and other self-propelled mechanisms equipped with an internal combustion engine. According to its functional purpose, it is an element of the transmission between the engine and the drive wheels. Its main task is to change the amount of torque that is transmitted from the motor to the wheels. The gearbox allows the vehicle to move in reverse and disconnect the engine from the transmission when parked. There are currently four types of transmission available:

  • Mechanical;
  • Automatic;
  • Robotic;
  • Variable speed drive.

There is another classification system for this mechanism. According to the principle of operation, a distinction is made between stepped, continuously variable and combined transmissions. According to the definition, in stepped transmissions the change in torque occurs discretely. Or stepwise. These include mechanical and robotic gearboxes. A manual gearbox, or manual transmission for short, is simply called mechanics in everyday life. In this case, we will talk specifically about mechanics, and other structures require separate consideration.

The operating principle of the car is constructed as follows. Between the engine and manual transmission there is a clutch assembly. When the driver presses the clutch pedal, the connection between the engine and the wheels is completely broken. As long as the pedal is pressed, there is nothing connecting the engine and the wheels. During this period of time, the driver engages the desired gear. The same procedure is followed when starting to move. A mechanical transmission is a metal housing containing gears and shafts.

One gear is rotated by the engine, and the other transmits the rotational energy further to the wheels. When the engine rotates a wheel of smaller diameter than the one that transmits force to the wheel, the torque has high energy and low speed. If the gears have the same diameter, then neither the torque nor the speed changes during transmission. And when the engine rotates a larger gear, the speed increases and the force decreases. Gears are changed using a lever located inside the car. It is known that first gear gives the car the greatest power and the lowest speed.

Priora automatic: studying the functionality of the gearbox

When buying a car, future owners increasingly prefer cars equipped with automatic transmission.
An automatic is a convenient thing; you don’t need to constantly pull the gearbox lever back and forth. Female representatives especially prefer automatic transmissions. The advantage of an automated transmission is ease of use, which is why the driver does not divert his attention from the road situation to the need to constantly change gears of a manual transmission. But at the same time, the dynamics of a car with this transmission decreases and fuel consumption increases. However, even with these shortcomings, more and more motorists prefer cars equipped with an automatic gearbox.

Cars with automatic transmissions have been produced abroad for a long time, but domestically produced cars equipped with automatic transmissions have practically never been seen. Throughout history, there were several representatives with an automatic transmission, but these cars were produced in a small series and were inaccessible to most.

They decided to rectify the situation at the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. Since 2010, it was decided to install automatic transmission on the Lada Kalina and Lada Granta. It was not planned to equip the Lada Priora with an automatic machine.

Is it worth it?

The Lada Priora has been out of production for 2 years now, and the first model appeared back in 2007, so the cost of a relatively new car exceeds 350 thousand rubles, and a ten-year-old Priora in good condition can be sold for 200–300 thousand. If we add to this the costs of purchasing parts, re-equipment and paperwork, without which it is impossible to install an automatic transmission on a Priora, then the total cost will increase by 1.5–2 times and it will not be possible to sell such a car without serious losses.

Therefore, installing an automatic transmission is justified only if the car is dear to the owner not only as a means of transportation, but also as some kind of symbol. If you decide to install a machine gun on the Priora yourself, then, in addition to purely technical issues, you will have to independently comply with the requirements of Russian legislation and interact with the traffic police and other structures, which does not add to your moral and mental health. That is why most of those who want to carry out such an upgrade agree to overpay 20-50 thousand to the intermediary so that he takes care of all the paperwork.

If this is just a means of transportation, then by selling your car and adding 50-100 thousand, you can buy a car in the same condition, but noticeably better equipped and without any problems with documents.

In addition, even the most powerful engine of this car, VAZ 21127, produces only 106 hp. s., so there can be no talk of any dynamic driving, but for the same money you can pick up many cars with a more powerful engine and automatic transmission. Moreover, they will all be in good condition, but rather tedious procedures and long waits will not be required.

Automatic transmission from other cars

To install an automatic transmission from another car under service conditions, it is often necessary to manufacture additional parts. For example, for the same automatic transmission from a Corolla, you need to make an internal CV joint. It is turned on a lathe. The work is very labor-intensive and requires excellent turner skills. After all, if you allow any play, the unit will quickly break down.

At the same time, installing an automatic transmission from a Japanese foreign car on a Priora remains a very popular solution. Even if the automatic transmission has already been used, its resource will still last for a very long time. There is an opinion that even the new Jatco transmission does not last as long as the old Corolla transmission.

When is replacement better than repair?

Repairing the gearbox eliminates the problem, but does not affect its cause, and also does not change the transmission parameters, with the exception of installing more powerful shafts and gears with a different gear ratio. However, it is impossible to repair the structural defects of the box if it does not meet the tasks set by the driver. In this case, the gearbox is changed to a more suitable one. For this reason, AvtoVAZ abandoned a number of rocker boxes. The potential for their modernization was exhausted, and without reworking the design, it was impossible to eliminate the cause of the claims made by drivers.

When the management of AvtoVAZ realized this, instead of rocker boxes they installed more advanced cable ones, which immediately eliminated the causes of two main complaints: difficult gear shifting in the cold and rattling of the gearshift lever even with a fully functional gear selection mechanism (GSM).

Which gearbox is suitable for Priora?

If you need to replace a gearbox that cannot be repaired, it is best to install exactly the same one: then a minimum of alterations will be required.

If, in principle, you are not satisfied with the standard gearbox of the Lada Priora, install a French manual transmission, a Japanese hydraulic automatic transmission or a Russian-German robot from Kalina or Vesta. Such units will cost significantly more than the original ones, and will also require significant modifications to the car, but will provide a higher level of comfort.

For example, an automatic transmission from Granta will fit into a Priora without major modifications, but it is better to use a robot rather than a hydraulic automatic transmission: then you will be able to save a lot of money.

If this option doesn’t suit you, then it might be easier to change the car: a remodel can cost several hundred thousand rubles. And for 100-150 thousand you can get a good foreign car 15-20 years old, which will be much more reliable and comfortable than the Priora. Buying a contract unit or taking a transmission from a disassembly unit is a lottery in which not everyone is lucky. An inexpensive hydraulic automatic machine from a Japanese or German car will cost 30–50 thousand rubles, and no one knows how long it will work.

Which car is suitable for the gearbox on the Priora?

It will cost at least the same amount to install the unit and remodel the car, after which you will have to prove for a long time and painfully to the traffic police that no unacceptable changes were made to the design of the vehicle. And those that exist are within the permitted limits. The evidence will be an expert opinion, which is very difficult to get for free.

As a result, the total costs can easily exceed 200 thousand rubles, which is comparable to the cost of a fresh Priora or a ten-year-old well-maintained foreign car. Therefore, often, instead of asking which cars are suitable for the gearbox on the Priora, they switch to someone else: isn’t it cheaper to buy a foreign car?

It's no secret that the Priora has a congenital problem - the rattling of the gearbox driveshaft.

In almost all Priors, the rubber boot of the gearbox driveshaft is destroyed after some time. One glance is enough to give a verdict: the boot is made of burnt rubber, so it doesn’t last long! The markings on the cardan shaft boot were not Balakovsky.

It was decided to replace the Priora boot with a Viburnum boot, and also replace the Priora gearbox driveshaft itself with a Kalina driveshaft - it is too praised on various forums.

The original boot of the gearbox driveshaft was cracked, and there was even a hole in its “accordion”
I purchased a Balakovo-made boot and a Tolyatti gearbox driveshaft, all from Kalina
I had to tinker a little with the Kalina gearbox driveshaft: the Kalina driveshaft rod is longer than the Priora rod by about 2 cm. Since I didn’t have the opportunity to compare the Kalina driveshaft with my own driveshaft (it was still on the car at that time), I had to cut it “blindly”. I measured 1.8 cm from the edge and started sawing
I don’t have a grinder, I sawed with a hacksaw for metal - it took about 40 minutes of time, 2 hacksaw blades and a slightly ground corner on the emery))) It’s very difficult to saw, because the metal is strong!

After sawing off part of the rod, I made a conical chamfer using sandpaper and a file.

Let's start removing the original gearbox driveshaft. We loosen the clamp and tighten the torn boot. Next, we unscrew the fixing bolt, but unfortunately this is not so easy to do: the bolt is coated with red thread locker and there is no way to unscrew it. The open-end wrench turned, “licking” the edges, but the powerful socket head did not fit; the gearbox housing interfered with it.

In general, in order to remove the fixing one, stock up on spanners. Replacing the boot and drive shaft itself takes about 10 minutes

I sawed at random, but the size was amazingly accurate - the length of the rod of the original Priora gearbox driveshaft and the Kalina gearbox driveshaft are the same!
The original driveshaft of the Priora gearbox is essentially not a driveshaft at all: it bends only in one plane, while the Kalinov gearbox driveshaft bends in 2 planes. In addition, the photo clearly shows a huge gap of 2-3 mm on the original Priora driveshaft
The anthers differ slightly, but the Kalinovsky anther has better workmanship than the original Priora anther
A little about adjustment. While unscrewing the fixing bolt, the reverse gear jumped out. We had to manually select the desired gear using pliers, but we couldn’t do it the first time. Having assembled the mechanism, it turned out that in place of the reverse gear it turned out to be the first, and the second could not be engaged due to the reverse speed limiter. I had to redo everything. The repeated adjustment turned out even worse, only 3, 4, 5 gears remained. It was possible to adjust it normally only the 4th time, using pliers to find the reverse gear. And we found it this way: having removed the link and clamped the cardan shaft with pliers, turned it counterclockwise until it stops and pushed the hinge forward. In order to make sure that we had engaged reverse gear, I started the engine and carefully moved off - the car went backwards! Let me make a reservation right away: absolutely nothing will happen to the box, nothing will fly out or break.
We install the gearbox driveshaft in place. Having straightened the clamp clamp a little, we connected the gearbox driveshaft to the rocker, set the lever to the reverse gear position and tightened the clamp clamp! The check showed that all the gears are there and they work perfectly.

The feeling is very pleasant, the gears are engaged very softly and smoothly, no snagging. The lateral play of the lever has not changed, the longitudinal play has become smaller, but this difference is not noticeable either while moving or standing still. The position of the lever has changed a little, it has become a little closer to the driver’s seat, but it doesn’t touch anything, and it’s not noticeable from the outside, just by feeling it! But now you don’t have to reach so far for fifth gear

Connector X3 (See Fig. 1) BCM: Driver's door switch - blue/black Right front door switch - brown Rear door switches - gray/red Trunk switch - yellow/red Opening the trunk (low-current input, possible without a relay, additional channel directly to alarm) – blue/red

Connector X1 (See Figure 1) BCM: Turns – blue, blue/black

Ts.Z. - brown; The wire is located inside the driver's door, in the harness from the button block. (See Diagram 3 for details)

Hood end cap – white/black; Connector X2-17 (If an engine temperature sensor is used, then according to scheme 2)

The block is located behind the panel, near the gas pedal. To remove the block, remove the left and right panels, unscrew the two 10mm nuts, left and right, securing the block.

Connection to central locking

When connecting the central locking (see diagram 3), if you connect only to the brown wire in the driver's door, then all doors will close and only the driver's door will open. To open the remaining doors, you need to use a wire in the alarm for two-step opening of the central locking system, and connect according to the diagram below.

The remaining doors are opened by the second impulse, relay K1. Relays K2 and K3 are also activated; they are needed to block the right power windows. If this is not done, then when you open the remaining doors, the right windows will open slightly for 0.8 seconds, i.e. from the impulse to open the central locking, the second step. It is necessary to block the power windows due to the peculiarities of the electrical circuit of the Priora doors.

If the configuration does not include power windows on the rear doors, then relay K3 does not need to be installed, and accordingly, cell X1-11 in connector X1 is not used. (The color of wire X1-11 is not known.) If the configuration does not include power windows at all, then there is no need to use relay K2.

Factory AMT gearbox on Priora: price and article number

The new gearbox in VAZ was developed on the basis of an old frozen project. In 2009, the development of a manual transmission for golf-class cars was closed, but good performance led engineers to the idea that the VAZ-2116 gearbox, a new generation of manual transmission, could become a prototype for an automatic transmission.

A robotic automatic transmission with electric actuators from ZF is now used in front-wheel drive Ladas. The automatic transmission has code 2181 for Kalina and Granta, and the Priora has an automatic transmission with code 2182. A Lada Priora car with AMT at the dealer and on the secondary market costs about 20 thousand rubles more than a Priora with a “mechanics”. It works in four positions: R, N, A and manual gear shift (“+” is responsible for upshifting, “-” is responsible for downshifting).

Lada Priora gearbox failures in Moscow

VAZ 2170 Priora cars arrive at our workshop with different types of damage. As an example, let’s look at the most common problems with our clients’ cars.

  • Lada Priora has a mileage of 70 thousand km - there were problems with shifting 2nd gear. At first it turned on with a crunch, then it began to knock out. When I tried to shift, the car started to jerk and eventually stopped.
  • VAZ 2170 2010 – the Lada Priora gear knob has failed.
  • The owner contacted the auto repair shop because the gearbox on his Lada Priora was damaged and needed replacement.
  • The essence of the appeal is faulty elements of the Lada Priora: gearbox seal, bearings, cracked crankcase.
  • Lada Priora 6 – required fluid refilling and clutch adjustment.

In these and other cases, we carried out professional diagnostics. The manual transmission was repaired and the transmission system was brought back to normal.

Tip 1: Which speed corresponds to which gear?

To change gears correctly, you need to sharply squeeze the clutch all the way to the floor, while simultaneously removing your foot from the gas pedal. Then you need to smoothly and quickly engage the desired gear, first moving the gear lever to the neutral position, and then immediately to the desired gear position. After this, release the clutch pedal, slightly increasing engine speed to compensate for the loss of speed, release the clutch completely and significantly increase the gas.

Manual transmission is quite common in both domestic and foreign cars. The art of driving, including precise control, good acceleration and motion control, lies in such cars, including the ability to change gears in time.

Serial production of Priora automatic is just around the corner

Signs of a box malfunction:

  1. The first gear is engaged with effort.
  2. Switching occurs uncontrollably.
  3. The car jerks while driving.
  4. Transmissions are not included.
  5. The presence of uncharacteristic sounds when switching modes: creaks, crackling, grinding.
  6. Oil is leaking.
  7. The car vibrates when driving.
  8. The noise of the box when the engine is running, which disappears after the clutch is depressed.

It is problematic to accurately determine the nature of the breakdown, since the same sign may indicate different defects. To determine the breakdown, disassembly of the unit is necessary. Often the reason lies in adhesion, as these two elements are inextricably linked to each other.

To troubleshoot problems, it is necessary to dismantle the Lada Priora gearbox, replace worn parts, oil, and adjust the gaps.

Is it necessary to notify the traffic police and the insurance company about replacing the transmission?

If you installed exactly the same box instead of yours, then there is no need to inform the traffic police. A gearbox is not a numbered unit. This means that its number is not specified in any documents: only the device model is important.

The same situation arises if you replaced the standard 2170 with a 2180: this is the same type of unit, moreover, standardly installed on this machine.

If you replaced the rocker box with a cable one, then you made a change in the design of the vehicle. It is necessary to inform the traffic police inspector and undergo a technical inspection, after which a corresponding entry will be made in the vehicle’s title.

Gearbox replacement

However, to pass the technical inspection, you will have to submit documents for the unit and a declaration from the car service about replacing the unit. In addition, some traffic police officers may make it significantly more difficult to register changes. Reason: you violated the procedure established by law by not obtaining permission from the traffic police to carry out such a replacement and an expert’s opinion on its possibility (admissibility) before starting work.

After making changes to your registration documents, you must contact your insurance company representative to have the information entered into their database. If you do not do this, then after an accident you will lose your insurance, and all costs will fall on your shoulders. The fact that the gearbox on the Lada Priora comes from another car does not mean that you can simply exchange one unit for another. It is necessary to comply with the procedure established by law. If you really want to get rid of the need to constantly pull the gear lever, then a good choice would be to install an automatic transmission from Granta on the Priora. This will require a minimum investment, and registration of changes will be hassle-free.

Disadvantages - are there any?

So what happens? Andersson, influencing our subconscious, has set us up to receive only positive impressions from the car, or are there still disadvantages? There are no special comments about the engine and gearbox. But the interior, especially in the back, is a bit cramped. As for the trunk, it is quite large, but the backs of the sofa cannot be folded. No, they should a priori fold, but only gym regulars can do this.

With the new automatic transmission, Priora has excellent traction characteristics

The chassis of the Lada Priora is also not bad. You can even drive along a country road without slowing down, and the ride comfort will remain at a high level. But, unfortunately, on a straight road, where speed is needed, the suspension floats. The car handles excellently when cornering, but the slight body roll is alarming.

According to current standards, the brakes of the Priora are also weak. And Andersson himself does not deny this fact, stating that the car is not new and in the process of modifications it is impossible to correct what the design, the skeleton of the car, does not allow. Yes, indeed, this is so. We need a different body that would be much lighter and at the same time stiffer.

Defective parts of the secondary shaft.

The most common malfunction is, of course, clogged teeth:

Moreover, this most often occurs in second gear. This is the main reason for transmission failure. Naturally, nicks appear not only on the ring gear, but also on the coupling. Therefore, the clutch also requires replacement. You should also carefully inspect the hub. The hub is made of cast iron, sometimes cracks appear in it and then it collapses. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully examine it; if cracks appear, it must be replaced. As a rule, the hub goes into spare parts assembled with the coupling. There are two types of hubs on these shafts with a 1-2 gear clutch. Nowadays, as a rule, they install double-cone synchronizers and clutches with gears with fine teeth. And the first years after these boxes were released, they put them like those in the second photo. They have ordinary couplings (VAZ 2108) only the hubs and gears of 1-2 gears are original.

Adjustment

The backstage adjustment should be made in several cases:

  • after dismantling the gearbox;
  • when the cardan has been replaced or the fixing clamps have become loose;
  • if the linkage rotates on the hinge.

Of course, this will also be advisable if you have recorded signs of a malfunction of the element, which are described in the previous paragraph.

What to cook?

Before you begin repairs, prepare in advance:

  • wrench to loosen the clamp;
  • wheel chocks or bricks.

Universal wrench

You will need wheel chocks...

...or the most ordinary bricks

Step by step instructions

To perform repairs, that is, adjustments, you need to perform the following steps:

  1. First, drive your VAZ 2110 into a garage with a pit or onto an overpass.
  2. Place bricks or special wheel chocks under the car. Apply the handbrake.
  3. Climb under the bottom of the car and find the clamp that secures the linkage and hinge.
  4. Use a wrench to loosen the clamp.
  5. Then sit in the driver's seat and put the car into reverse. Remember that the lever must be in the extreme left position. Therefore, set it the way you think it should ideally be when engaging reverse gear. It is advisable to do this work with an assistant so that he holds the gearbox lever in the position you set it.
  6. Now again climb under the bottom of the car and firmly fix the clamp in this position.

Reach under the bottom and loosen the clamp, then set the gearbox lever to the reverse gear position

This completes the adjustment of the device. Take a test drive and check the operation of the unit. If necessary, repeat all steps again.

Backstage adjustment:

Note! Before you go to the auto store and buy a new rocker, be sure to try to adjust the old one first so as not to waste money, maybe everything is fine with the old rocker!

1) At the very beginning of the operation, we will tell you why the adjustment of the rocker may go wrong, namely, after removing the box, after replacing the cardan shaft, or after unscrewing the nuts and bolts that secure the tension clamps of the rods that come from the rocker, and in other cases.

2) Now let’s move on to the actual adjustments, firstly, you will need to first drive the car into a pit or lift it using a lift, then climb under the bottom of the car and there you will find the boot under which the driveshaft itself is located (the boot is indicated by a red arrow), next to with this cardan and the boot that covers it, the end of the rod coming from the rocker itself will be attached, and this end will be attached using a tie clamp, so take two screwdrivers in your hands and with their help loosen the bolt nut a little (the nut is indicated by a blue arrow, and the bolt green), while when you loosen, hold the bolt itself with one wrench so that it does not turn, and with the other at this time loosen the nut, after the nut is slightly loosened, take a screwdriver in your hands and insert it into two holes, namely in the hole between the tie clamp (Indicated by a yellow arrow) and into the hole of the rod itself (Indicated by a white arrow), thereby widening both holes (In fact, these are not holes but a groove, so in the future we will use this word) so that the link rod can easily move relative to gear selector rod.

Note! Before you crawl under the car, put the car into first gear!

3) After you loosen the tension clamp, get out from under the car and return to the car interior. In the cabin, move the gear shift lever all the way to the left, but forward or backward and do not even try to pull it.

4) And to complete the operation, again climb under the car and tighten the nut of the same bolt that secured the tie rod of the rocker link.

Note! When all the operations are completed, test the gearshift lever for functionality, namely, check whether all gears engage clearly, start the car, drive it a little and if the shifter is working, then everything will be fine and you won’t even need to change anything!

By the way, another way (almost the same method) of adjusting the rocker, see the video clip below, in this video an example is shown on a VAZ 2109 car, but don’t pay attention to this, since the entire gear shift mechanism is on front-wheel drive cars VAZ, including the top ten, is practically no different from each other!

What parameters are used to select a gearbox?

To determine which cars are suitable for the Priora gearbox, you must take into account the following parameters:

Box from another car

When all conditions are met, the box can be installed on the car without major modifications. If at least one of the parameters does not correspond, then to install the unit you will have to seriously redo the car. And if several characteristics diverge, a change in the design of the vehicle may be required.

Clutch bell shape and size

According to this parameter, the Lada Priora corresponds to front-wheel drive manual and automatic transmissions produced by AvtoVAZ, as well as most units from foreign cars of comparable power.

There are three ways to check gearbox compatibility:

Shape and location of holes for mounting to the car body

The gearbox is attached to the engine using studs and nuts. Therefore, the box forms a single block with the power unit, which must be suspended on shock-absorbing pads:

If the location or some other parameters of the holes on the gearbox housing do not correspond to the car, then you will have to come up with something: make changes to the design of the vehicle.

The main disadvantage of this method is that such a car will not pass technical inspection, and if it gets into an accident, the MTPL and CASCO insurance will be invalidated, with all the ensuing consequences.

Automatic transmission "Grants" for replacement

A swap for a Priora with an automatic transmission from a Lada Granta or Kalina will take place without any problems. An exception would be replacing the flywheel and starter, because their seats are completely identical. The gearbox from Renault Logan on a Priora is exactly the same: despite the different shapes of the bell and clutch, the mating planes of these cars are completely the same.

Maximum engine volume and torque

In Soviet times, any transmission was made with a safety margin of one and a half. Then the gearbox worked without any problems even on those cars whose engine volume and torque were almost 1.5 times greater than the maximum permissible for this unit. However, now not only AvtoVAZ, but also all other automakers do not have such an attitude. Even BMW, Mercedes and Toyota, which were once leaders in reliability, now produce disposable cars with units that become unusable after 5-7 years. Therefore, it is possible to install a box designed for a higher torque than the power unit produces. If the engine is more powerful, then such a transmission cannot be installed. The gearbox mechanism may be destroyed

Due to the low engine power, the Priora can be equipped with a gearbox from any front-wheel drive VAZ car, from the G8 to the Vesta. Often, a Jjatco automatic transmission removed from a Kalina or Vesta is installed in a Priora, because the unit is fully compatible with the entire modern AvtoVAZ model range.

Transmission type and the need for additional equipment

Any transmission consists not only of a gearbox, but also of a device that supplies it with signals from the driver - the GSM (gear selection mechanism). On old manual transmissions, this unit consisted of a lever, a rocker and a rod. The new ones have a different link installed, and instead of a rigid rod there are two Bowden cables. This design dramatically reduces vibrations of the gearbox lever, and also allows you to install the gear shift mechanism in the upper part of the unit, so that in winter the gears are switched on in the same way as in summer.

The situation is different with automatic and robotic transmissions, as well as CVTs. After all, none of the units has a direct connection with the driver, and the transmission of signals occurs through an intermediary - an electronic control unit (ECU). Therefore, to install such a box on a Priora, you will have to not only remove everything connected with the old unit, but also install the equipment necessary for the operation of the new one. And the less the transmission matches the car, the more extensive the modifications will be. You can even make the Priora rear- or all-wheel drive: there’s nothing complicated about it. But it will be impossible to drive it legally after such modification.

Characteristics of the Lada Priora gearbox

The base of the gearbox is represented by the following units:

  • Clutch housing;
  • Transmission housing;
  • Rear transmission starter flap.

All elements are connected to each other with fixing nuts and sealant. The design is protected from contamination by means of a magnet that retains waste metal products. The main shaft is a set of gears that, when rotated, are connected to additional gears of all speed modes. The additional shaft is designed to regulate and distribute the oil emulsion.

There are two types of bearings installed on the gearbox shafts: ball bearings in front, roller bearings in the rear. In order to connect with the outside atmosphere, a breather is provided. It is located at the top of the node.

Why do you have to change the gearbox?

The service life of manual gearboxes (MGTs) produced by AvtoVAZ is 200–300 thousand kilometers with careful use, which includes:

Original Priora box

If all these points are met, then the chance that the box will last the entire mileage or even more without major repairs is very high. At the same time, there is always the possibility that even an absolutely serviceable and well-maintained unit suddenly breaks down for no apparent reason. And this is the situation not only with boxes from AvtoVAZ, which, not without reason, are criticized for low quality and insufficient survivability. Not only “Ladas”, popularly contemptuously called the word “taz” (from the original name VAZ), but even units from manufacturers known for their reliability are not immune from this misfortune:
