Realizing this, we met our government, offering to develop specially new motors for us and send in the future, after completing the development of the production of the latter, all the necessary equipment for this. even provided AvtoVAZ with all the available documentation for 1.5-liter engines, which were planned to be subsequently installed on the VAZ-2103 car model.
But in order to make a final decision on which engines will be installed on the first Lada cars, NAMI tested other engines from other foreign cars. So, during the tests, the following cars were tested: - Moskvich 408, Ford Taunus 12M, Morris 1100, Peugeot 204, Renault R16, Skoda MB1000 and ZAZ (Zaporozhets). What engines were the VAZ 2106 produced with?
VAZ 2106 is a logical continuation of the entire range of automotive products of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. Including the legendary “six” (not to be confused with the “kopek”), this is an improved version of the VAZ2103. The sixth model was produced in different versions from 1976 to 2006.

It was installed both on the later Kopeykas and on its successors - export 2102, 2103, 2107 and later on 2121, 21053.
These VAZ 2103 engines have become an absolute novelty (plural, but before and after everything is singular). Thanks to its dynamics, they allowed it to accelerate to 100 km/h in less than 17 seconds.
Such indicators became possible due to a number of changes:
- The volume increased to 1500 cm3;
- The piston stroke increased by 14 mm;
- maximum power became 77 hp. With. ;
- torque was determined for the first time. On this type of VAZ engine it became 104/3400.
The cylinder block is made of a special cast iron alloy, the cylinder head is made of aluminum. These rules were mandatory for all types of engines, and the fundamental difference was in the diameter of the cylinders. Another positive feature of this model is the ability to install crankshaft 21213, which has identical parameters, but improved technical characteristics of the VAZ engine.

Major renovation
As an alternative replacement option, you can consider major repairs or tuning. Repairing your original engine will allow you to save a lot of money. And as a result, you will receive a unit that will be in no way inferior to the new engine you purchased. If it is necessary to increase power, it is enough to install larger cylinders and bore the block. You can also increase the compression and install a turbine. Such tuning will make your car a real “beast”. To extend the life of the power plant, you need to install high-quality parts and use good quality oil.
The easiest way to increase power is to bore the power plant by 3 mm for an 82 mm piston. To get a more torquey engine and to further increase the volume to 1.8 liters, you will have to increase the piston stroke to 84 mm.
One of the advantages of repair and tuning is that there is no need to re-register the car. You can spend the saved money, for example, on improving the braking system, increasing comfort, etc. You don’t have to do all this yourself. Even if you use the services of a car service, it will cost less than buying and installing a new engine.
Disadvantages and advantages
The 2106 engine has significant disadvantages:
- excess heat is transferred to the well of the piston bottom and fins by steel control plates inside the bosses;
- dynamic loads are reduced due to the displacement of the finger from the axis of symmetry to the right;
- When assembled into an engine, the pistons are mounted with markings in one direction, which increases labor costs and the human factor.
Piston 2106
The internal combustion engine uses a cylinder head from model 2103, a starter 35.3708 and a G221 generator for an engine with a current of 42A. Oil consumption does not exceed 700 g/1000 km. The instruction manual states that it is recommended to add 200 ml less lubricant than the volume of the system as a whole. The markings for which oil to pour are given in the upper table.
Is it possible to install another engine on the VAZ 2107?
Throughout its history, the VAZ 2107 has been equipped with 14 different versions of engine units - both carburetor and injection (new type). The engine displacement varied from 1.3 liters to 1.7 liters, while power characteristics varied from 66 to 140 horsepower.
That is, on any VAZ 2107 today you can install one of 14 standard engines - each of them has its own specific properties. Therefore, the car owner can install a new engine to suit his personal needs - a sportier one, a small car, a draft engine, etc.

You don’t have to go far and reinvent the wheel - you can use what your local manufacturer offers. Any engine from the classics - VAZ 21011, 2103, 2106
and even from 2113 it will be worth a penny without any problems. The fasteners are identical for all, minimal modifications will be required. The main advantage of the solution: the engine can be installed almost new, while from foreign cars you will get ones that are already well-worn. (see article “Replacing the engine with a contract one”).
For more modern models (VAZ 2108-2170), it will be necessary to cut the body and think through the fastenings, although even here there will not be so much hassle.
Niva 1.7 will give good power. Only here you need to be careful and install the new engine with the original oil pump and sump: in the Niva they hang lower, and when installed on a “penny” there is a high probability of snags.
Motor VAZ-21126
from Lada Priora is also a good solution. With a volume of 1.6 liters. and a power of 98 horses, the VAZ 2101 will run like a young one.
It’s especially nice that you don’t have to change the box - all gearboxes can be easily connected to the new engine.
Motors from foreign cars
If you want to install an engine from a foreign car, get ready for a more labor-intensive process and the need for additional modifications.
The most popular engine in terms of cost-effectiveness is the Fiat Argenta 2.0i. Approximately 60% of VAZ 2101 owners replaced the factory engine with a unit of this particular model. Nothing surprising: the “penny” is almost completely copied from it, so there are fewer problems with installation. Another thing is that the engine will clearly not be new, produced between 1966 and 1984, which is unlikely to please.
We can also recommend BMW M10 engines (volume from 1.6 to 1.8 liters) or M40 of the same capacity. Extreme sports enthusiasts also bet on the BMW M20
, but its power is rather high, which requires modification of the racks and replacement of the axles. In the proposed options, you will only need to digest the flywheel.
Craftsmen praise the replacement of the standard engine with an engine from Renault Logan and Mitsubishi Galant. True, in both cases the box will have to be taken from the same models.

, however, buying it (and even converting it for it) is no longer very budget-friendly. A successful and not too troublesome task would be to install an engine with a Lancia Thema - also a very popular engine among owners of “kopeck” cars. So the choice regarding which engine can be installed on the VAZ 2101 is quite wide. The main thing is to plan on your efforts to modernize the associated components, so that the restoration process does not take too long and is not too expensive.
Engines from other VAZ models
Motors from other models can also be installed on the “seven” without any major modifications to the fasteners. So, the easiest way to get into operation are engines from the VAZ 14 series. The only caveat is that it is not easy to find a unit of acceptable quality from the VAZ 2114; in car shops it will also be difficult to find components for repair and maintenance.
However, before replacing your standard engine with a motor from another model, you should think about the feasibility of such a replacement. First of all, you need to take into account at least three factors:
- Compliance of the new unit with the old one in weight and size.
- Availability of possibilities for connecting all lines to the new motor.
- Potential compatibility of the motor with other systems and components in the car.
Only if these three factors are observed, replacing the engine on a VAZ 2107 can be considered expedient and problem-free: in all other cases, a lot of work will be required, which, by the way, will not guarantee the proper functioning of the new power unit.
Modifying the engine compartment for a specific type of engine is a long and expensive task.

Motor from Lada Niva
The power unit from the Niva fits into the engine seat of the VAZ 2107 practically without modifications - it has the same dimensions and shape. The volume of a typical Niva engine varies from 1.6 to 1.7 liters, which allows it to develop power from 73 to 83 horsepower.
It makes sense to install a more powerful engine so that the “seven” feels the traction and strength that all “Lada 4x4” possess. In this case, you can choose the most convenient type of motor design:
- carburetor;
- injection.
In addition, the power unit from Niva is more modern - for example, it contains such advanced mechanisms as hydraulic valve compensators and a hydraulic chain tensioner. In this regard, the “seven” becomes not only “faster”, but also much quieter during operation. It is important that the Niva engine is also less demanding on adjustments and maintenance.
I once bothered with this question, started to find out, but then gave up such an idea. There are a lot of them, but it’s hard to find imported engines, especially those assembled with a mounted and live controller and electrics. It’s easier and cheaper to buy a Nivovsky 1.8. I heard they refused to install Opel engines on the shnivy, there won’t be any more of them, especially since they also had their own gearbox.

Motor from Lada Priora
The VAZ 2107 is often equipped with engines from Lada Priora. It should be noted that the new engines significantly optimize the performance of the “seven” due to the fact that they have a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 80 to 106 horsepower.
However, it should be taken into account that the engines from the Priora are only injection, and therefore cannot be installed on every model of the Seven (or the entire engine compartment will require significant modification).
The only disadvantage of using a modernized engine is that installing the unit will take time: it will be necessary to adjust the mounts to the size of the motor, as well as make changes to the fuel supply, cooling and exhaust systems. The “Prior” engine has slightly different shapes than the engine from the “Seven”, but easily fits into the seat under the hood. However, you will have to configure all other installation and connection details yourself.

When does it make sense to change the Nine engine?
In the old days, the engine was a numbered unit, and it was difficult to change it. It was necessary to report the breakdown, write a statement, wait for review, and fill out documents. Now the engine is just a spare part, and there are no restrictions on its replacement. If some other motor suits you, feel free to change it. To be completely sure, it is better not to throw away documents on the purchase of a new unit. Keep the delivery note with its brand and number.
A typical case when owners of “nines” change the engine is its fatal failure. Sometimes the engine can knock so much that it is cheaper to buy another one than to repair the existing one. The question arises - what to change to and which engine is suitable? There are three typical answers:
- on exactly the same original engine;
- to a similar unit from another VAZ model;
- for a motor from a small foreign car.
If you are lucky and have the opportunity to get the same unit as the one that failed, that's just great. Is it worth changing the engine that is familiar to it in its third decade? If you are ready for serious changes, take a closer look at the imported motor market. However, installing a non-original internal combustion engine is fraught with a considerable number of problems.

The first in the line of internal combustion engines of the AvtoVAZ manufacturer, the 2106 engine received tuning in the form of distributed injection. At the same time, the owners received a headache:
- intense heating, since the mixture is lean, the manufacturer’s cooling system cannot cope with temperature loads;
