Yamaha Viking 540: technical characteristics of the snowmobile, dimensions - length and width, weight

Yamaha Viking snowmobile size

Yamaha Viking 540 3 is a high-quality snowmobile from a well-known manufacturer from Japan.
This car has a classic layout, has a strict and simple design, as well as a high windshield. The model in question comes mainly in a black version, which is considered the most practical. Before us is the fourth model of the Viking family from the famous Japanese brand, known for the production of automobile and motorcycle equipment. The Viking 540 III model turned out to be no less popular than its predecessor, which had unprecedented characteristics for its time, and was significantly different from its competitors in terms of handling, maneuverability, reliability and cross-country ability. That is why the Viking 540 III model deserves special attention, since it has received significant improvements and is more modern and relevant than its predecessor of the same name. Among the main features of the machine, we note the impressive technical characteristics, the high level of which is not inferior to most famous analogues. In general, this type of transport has absorbed all the best that experienced Yamaha specialists have. First, let's pay attention to the wide track with excellent cross-country ability. In addition, thanks to the special shape of the caterpillar, it was possible to increase directional stability, and thereby reduce the risk of capsizing. Moreover, the durable track significantly increases the load capacity - by the way, according to this indicator, snowmobiles of the Viking family have always been considered the best. The car overcomes obstacles, rocks and deep snowdrifts without any problems. At the same time, you don’t even have to slow down, since the caterpillar is made of durable components that are resistant to deformation and various damages. This factor is extremely important at low temperatures, including in the northern regions of Russia - in such conditions problems with reliability most often arise. But the Viking 540 III is adapted to the most severe temperature loads.

Secondly, let’s pay attention to several pleasant features that benefit cross-country ability and stability. This is a multifunctional gearbox with forward and reverse positions that can be used under heavy loads - for example, for transporting and towing large and heavy loads. Reliable and uninterrupted starting is ensured by a powerful electric starter, thanks to which the engine starts almost instantly, and for this it does not need to be warmed up. But as a last resort, you can always use a manual starter, which means that the engine will start in any case, and in any weather. All of the listed components are the prerogative of the basic configuration.

VK540 III 1999-2012

When it's time to hit the fresh snow, everyone wants to be sure their snowmobile has everything they need to provide excellent handling, power, comfort, economy and reliability.

You will get all this by purchasing a Yamaha snowmobile. You should definitely try out the latest electronic control systems that help you blend in with your snowmobile as much as possible without damaging the environment.

If you're planning a trip, it doesn't matter whether it's on groomed trails, virgin snow or mountains - the combination of engine, chassis and suspension of this snowmobile will never let you down.

Large windshield VK540III . It is securely mounted to the frame and provides excellent protection for the driver and passenger from wind and snow.

Wide Camoplast® track. Where competitors struggle, the VK540III continues to move forward. Its 500mm high-profile Camoplast® track has 25mm lugs. The track length is 3968 mm, which provides excellent maneuverability in deep snow.

Wide plastic skis allow the VK540lII to have excellent grip in deep snow and provide excellent handling.

ProAction® rear suspension . The suspension uses gas-filled shock absorbers, providing unsurpassed comfort on the most uneven roads. Quick Adjust allows you to quickly adjust shock damping and spring preload to match the suspension characteristics to your sled's specific load.

Returning to the chassis, we will pay special attention to the tracked chassis. There is one single caterpillar installed at the rear, which is distinguished by its increased dimensions. Its length is 4 meters, while the length of the snowmobile itself reaches three meters. At the same time, the track width is 500 mm, which is an important factor that ensures high-quality maneuverability in deep snow. Among other parameters that benefit off-road qualities, it is worth noting the ski base, which is about 1000 mm.

Of the other positive qualities of the Yamaha Viking 540 III snowmobile discussed above, we separately note the load capacity. In this parameter, the model under consideration is not inferior to most analogues, and in some ways surpasses them. According to official data, this snowmobile is capable of transporting more than 300 kg of cargo, while the permissible speed can reach 60 km/h. Practice shows that with the help of a towbar you can attach any load whose mass exceeds the weight of the snowmobile itself. Especially for such high loads, the gearbox has a reduction gear. Thus, we can talk about the high traction capabilities of the Yamaha Viking 540 III snowmobile without fear of reliability problems. The machine is suitable for absolutely any task and will satisfy the practical user - a fisherman, hunter, or lovers of recreation and active adventures with his family.

VK540 1988-1993

The VK540 is the toughest worker in history. This model belongs to the Yamaha line of utilitarian equipment. Known for its reliability, it is popular where work never stops in deep snow. Move equipment on the ski slope, bring firewood from the forest and much more. It is equipped with a durable, high-torque 540 cc 2-cylinder air-cooled engine, range control and reverse gear.

Its 20-inch, 156-inch-long track is ideal for driving through deep snow. It features heated steering grips and accelerator lever, long-travel rear suspension, powerful towing device, spacious trunk and seat capacity, as well as a high windshield.

The VK540 transmission's multiplier allows the owner to pull heavy trailers and loads at low speeds. To do this, simply move the easy-to-use switch to the appropriate position. In addition to selecting direct or downshift, it also engages reverse gear.

Tradition comes first

The utilitarian VK 540 Viking can easily be called a legendary model. Reliability, unpretentiousness, simplicity of design and low price - these are the qualities thanks to which this device has been the market leader on one-sixth of the landmass for many years now. And the more difficult the task was for the development team of the new generation of “five hundred and fortieth”, because the successor to the bestseller must become even better in all respects, so as not to miss the “prizing place”.

And here we have the VK 540 IV! A quick glance is enough to notice the absence of fundamental changes in the appearance of the new product. A discreet, in many ways even simple design, a square headlight under an almost vertical windshield that has already become a signature feature, a flat “parallelepiped” seat - the differences in the appearance of the two generations are practically invisible to the naked eye. Well, it’s quite logical that you shouldn’t expect a flight of design ideas and pretentious lines from a time-tested “utilitarian” to the core. And people who use a snowmobile as a household assistant and a daily vehicle still, as a rule, value other qualities.

But on the technical side there are a lot of changes. And for their visual illustration, the organizers provided journalists with several “third” VK 540s. There couldn’t be better conditions for comparison!

Let's get comfortable behind the wheel of the new product. Despite its apparent simplicity, the seat is quite comfortable. The seating position is vertical, traditional for a utilitarian snowmobile. But the location of the steering wheel seemed not ideal - for a person taller than 180 cm, the main control element is perhaps a little low. This will probably cause some discomfort when turning. However, let's not draw hasty conclusions.

There’s a lone speedometer on the dashboard – you couldn’t get more ascetic. But there are no complaints about the perception of information; large numbers are read well. The Limited version additionally includes a tachometer and rear-view mirrors - things that are certainly useful and also quite informative.

And here is the first cardinal difference in the ergonomics of the VK 540 IV from its predecessor - a different design of the footrests. Instead of round profiles, metal plates with teeth are used at the edges. They hold the boot securely, and now even if the footrest becomes icy, neither the pilot nor the passenger’s foot will slip.

By the way, it has now become a little more comfortable for the passenger to sit. Firstly, the shape and profile of the handles on the sides have been slightly changed, and they themselves have become softer - an undeniable plus for the “second number” on a long journey. Secondly, the VK 540 IV is equipped with a new torsion bar suspension with gas-filled shock absorbers, which should add comfort to both “riders”. Are we sure?

Engine

The Yamaha Viking 540 III snowmobile is equipped with a time-tested engine, which is borrowed from its predecessor, but has significant improvements in terms of efficiency, environmental friendliness and higher power. This powerplant impresses with its improvements and advanced features, as it is considered one of the most powerful and energy efficient available today - at least in its price category. Thus, the working volume of the power plant is 0.5 liters, and the power is 46 horsepower. This power output is enough to avoid problems with cross-country ability. In addition, 46 forces allow you to move quite quickly on rolled snow, on straight and level roads. The engine is air cooled, which is considered the simplest compared to liquid cooling. The two-stroke, two-cylinder layout is compact and lightweight, which benefits a more rational organization of the engine compartment and also reduces the weight of the snowmobile. High technology is provided by the Mikuni B38 carburetor system, as well as an exhaust system with reed valves. There is an electric start as well as a manual starter. All of the listed components operate reliably and without interruption, and make it possible to achieve high environmental friendliness and low fuel consumption under high loads.

has been in quite a frenzy lately premium equipment and in some local segments it has stopped altogether. Financial conflicts and a general decline in interest in expensive cars have seriously hit the entire industry.

But it is perhaps too early for the Russian distributor of Yamaha to complain about a hard life: in our country, none of the importers can boast of any comparable sales levels of snow machines. During 2012, for example, over 10,000 Yamaha Viking 540 snowmobiles were sold in Russia! In other words, today the Viking is the best-selling foreign-made car. And it looks like it will remain so for a very long time! Quite naturally, such exorbitant numbers (and corresponding incomes) for competitors are an objective reason for envy. And, in order to promote the “Japanese” in the domestic snowmobile market, the rest of its players are going, as they say, “in all seriousness.” Within a year, a savvy and thoughtful buyer can easily purchase a utility snowmobile from Polaris, Arctic Cat or BRP at a price tag not too different from the budget price of a Yamaha Viking. And, most likely, the long-awaited purchase will be built using more modern technologies and will turn out to be an order of magnitude more “stuffed” than its Japanese counterpart... But, despite this, VK series cars are still being bought in Russia. Why?

The answer, in my opinion, is simple: firstly, Yamaha began its attack on the domestic snowmobile market much earlier than its competitors. Accordingly, the Japanese concern has a much more developed dealer network. Having purchased a Viking, spare parts for it can be found in almost any area of the country. And secondly, despite the archaic design (the model has been produced since 1988...), the Yamaha VK 540 has established itself as a very reliable and repairable snowmobile. In order to consolidate their already stable position at the top of the market pyramid, the Japanese resorted to a truly Asian military stratagem. They tried to make the relatively inexpensive and simple Viking even simpler and cheaper. All possible bells and whistles were removed from the old friend “Viking” to simplify, reduce the cost and reduce the weight of the car as much as possible. And by the beginning of the 2013–2014 season, all potential competitors received a well-planned preemptive strike in the form of the latest VK540 IV Tough Pro! I repeat once again: the essence of the transformations that occurred with the good old Viking is quite simple. The Japanese tried to reduce the price of the snowmobile as much as possible. That is, taking the basic model as a basis, the designers mercilessly removed everything “unnecessary”. Here, for example, is the appearance of the new car. All stickers were removed from the body of the progenitor, the backrest for the passenger was removed and the profiled seat was replaced with a simple and not very comfortable “bench”. Which, by the way, did not have a positive effect on the ergonomics of the driver’s workplace. But replacing a traditional aluminum bumper with a simple, reliable and repairable part made of a steel pipe, in my opinion, is a very smart decision. Such homemade structures are quite common in the main habitat of the Viking. It is the owners of these snowmobiles who, on their own, have been converting factory vehicles in this way for many years. The steel part allows you to use the snowmobile even in the densest forest without fear of deforming or breaking the expensive protective plastic or the original bumper.

The Tough Pro's powerplant is almost identical to that of the original VK540. Except that the electric starter and separate lubrication system were dismantled on the new product. So now you have to mix the fuel with oil in advance and start the car only with the help of your own muscles. Regression, you say? Not at all! If you look at it, this decision is quite justified. In the conditions of the Far North (where the vast majority of potential buyers of this snowmobile live), the separate lubrication system is removed when purchasing the machine. At temperatures below minus 40 ºС it simply stops working. And starting the engine using an electric starter in such cosmic cold is also quite problematic...

As a result of all these design tricks, the snowmobile “lost weight” by 16 kg and fell in price by about 30-40 thousand rubles compared to the basic progenitor Viking VK540. The bottom line is that the potential buyer gets the same good old snowmobile, proven over the years, but at a much more “tasty” price tag. Many will think that 30,000 rubles is not such a significant amount, but for the northern regions of the country, where a snowmobile is sometimes the only means of transportation, this is a lot of money. So the appearance of a “light” version of the car is a completely reasoned and justified step. I think that the appearance of the Tough Pro, if it does not drown the trade of continental snowmobiles in our country, will definitely seriously interfere with the statistics of their sales. Only the new Varyag 500 from the Russian company can withstand such a serious and well-thought-out attack. After all, the cost of a direct competitor is only 199,999 rubles! /

Reviews

Many people believe that foreigners are unable to make equipment that can easily withstand the Russian winter. But the characteristics of the Yamaha Viking 540 snowmobile refute this opinion - the powerful machine easily overcomes snow obstacles, demonstrating incredible speed and cross-country ability on both dense snow and powder.

With each new generation, the performance indicators of this model are increasing. The engineers of the Japanese concern think through everything to the smallest detail, trying to perfectly adapt the snowmobile for service in the most severe conditions. Thanks to the use of modern composite materials, the weight of the Yamaha Viking 540 snowmobile was significantly reduced, which had a positive effect on the vehicle’s cross-country ability, its speed and stability. A distinctive feature of the machine is the unique Camoplast Ripsaw Full track, which is durable and efficient on any type of snow.

The ergonomics of the machine have also been improved. The increased size of the footrests will be appreciated by both the driver and his passenger. Increasing the height of the windshield has a positive effect on ride comfort, because cold air flows will no longer bother even tall riders.

The dimensions of the new modification of the Yamaha Viking snowmobile remained at the same level, because many years of operation have proven that they correspond to ideal parameters. The dimensions of the car are such that it remains stable at any speed and allows you to take turns very confidently. This equipment will satisfy the needs of both fans of extreme driving and those drivers who need a reliable and multifunctional snowmobile for every day. By contacting us, you will be pleasantly surprised by the large selection of equipment offered at competitive prices. We will be happy to help you choose, we are waiting for you!

What is a snowmobile for?

As a rule, it is replaced by snowmobiles. These could be snowmobiles from Yamaha, Ermak, or Russian Mechanics. All such equipment for moving on snow will be the optimal transport for snowy areas, because it allows you to use the rain sheet for the fastest and most comfortable transportation.

Of course, without this type of movement it is impossible to imagine communication in those areas where it is not possible to build roads.

Snowmobiles will become very relevant for those who love fast and well-controlled riding, as well as hunting in snowy areas.

Thus, this unit is really great for performing its functions and allows you to move quickly in the snow.

Snowmobile design

The design of the snowmobile is really well thought out, simple and functional. Skis and tracks are used to move through the snow without extra effort. Otherwise, the design and movement system differs little from that of a car.

Therefore, the snowmobile can be called a very successful adaptation of standard equipment to weather conditions.

This type of transport is capable of transporting not only the driver himself, but also another passenger, or any cargo.

Thanks to this, you can not only get from one point to another, but also bring a fellow traveler or transport any objects.

Snowmobile Yamaha Viking 540

The Japanese manufacturer Yamaha is one of the world's best developers of a wide variety of equipment, among which snowmobiles occupy a worthy place .

Well, among them, the Yamaha Viking 540 model is especially distinguished. This device is the most successful development of the company .

It is very popular and is used all over the world. The reason for this is the excellent performance characteristics.

When starting a conversation about this snowmobile model, from the first words I would like to note its great cross-country ability, excellent endurance and ability to transport cargo.

At the same time, we can talk about this snowmobile as an economical and reliable device.

But these qualities, however, can be attributed to any Yamaha equipment.

The legendary Yamaha Viking 540 family

In addition to high power, snowmobiles of the Yamaha Viking 540 family have good handling .
And this property makes them suitable for any need.

The plastic body kit of the Japanese snowmobile hides a two-cylinder two-stroke engine, the volume of which is 535 cubic meters.

The efficient carburetor of the Mikuni model ensures economical fuel consumption . At the same time, the engine produces 46 horsepower.

Forced air cooling is used here, so the equipment can be used at low positive temperatures.

Regardless of the two-stroke engine, the snowmobile will smoke only during warm-up. And when the operating temperature is reached, the smoke is almost invisible.

The power unit is equipped with a separate automatic lubrication system , so the owner does not need to prepare a mixture of gasoline and oil.

The octane number of gasoline poured into the tank must be at least 92. Well, the lubricant tank is filled with 2.5 liters of two-stroke oil specialized for snowmobiles.

Snowmobile Yamaha Viking 540 Tough Pro

The premiere of the 2014 season was the new utilitarian snowmobile VK540IV Tough Pro (VK540IV Tough Pro). Having successfully filled the gap left in the line of low-budget Yamaha snowmobiles as a result of the discontinuation of the Yamaha Bravo 250 T snowmobile two years ago, the new Viking 540 IV Tough Pro retained the main advantage of its predecessor - an attractive price. Created on the basis of the best-selling snowmobile in Russia, the Yamaha Viking 540, widely used both for work and for hunting and fishing, the VK540IV Tough Pro retains its powerful torquey 535 cc 2-cylinder 2-stroke air-cooled engine, wide (510 mm) Camoplast® Ripsaw™ track, heated grips and a comfortable two-person seat. The absence of a separate lubrication system and electric starter in its design is an absolute plus in the conditions of record low temperatures of the Russian winter, since it is these design features of the new VK540IV Tough Pro that allow it to start with half a turn in any conditions.
