The main pair is 4.1 - the engine is unloaded, it is easier for the motor to spin the wheels, the dynamics of the car increase, the gears are shortened, the maximum speed drops by ~20 km. per hour (at 160 km/h, tachometer revolutions are 5 thousand), fuel consumption + 1 liter. The main pair 4.3 is the same as 4.1 + 5 mph. in all gears.
Ch. pair 4.1 or 4.3 + sports series (06, 07 or 08): dynamics (fast acceleration due to the main pair) + long gears, mainly 1st and 2nd spin up to the maximum.
Ch. pairs 4.5 and 4.7: gears are even shorter than 4.1 and 4.3 (maximum speed at 5 thousand tachometer revolutions is 140 km/h), recommended use: when towing and transporting heavy trailers.

Unacceptable:
- Shift into gear with a crunch.
- Switch quickly from gear to gear.
- It is rude to engage the gears (if the gear does not engage, do not forcefully engage it, but release it again and press the clutch, and repeat its engagement).
If you violate the above instructions, the service life of the gears, and accordingly the gearbox, will sharply decrease!!!
Also, it is highly undesirable to start with slipping. Such systematic driving leads to the collapse of the differential, which breaks the gearbox (the large casing suffers), and the car remains unable to move. BE SURE to check that the clutch is in good condition! The clutch is checked like this:
- Correct adjustment of the clutch pedal (pedal at the level of the brake pedal)
- Squeeze, pause for 2 seconds, reverse gear should engage without crunching. If the reverse gear engages with a crunch or does not engage at all, then this indicates that the clutch is “driving” and needs to be changed immediately! With such a malfunction, there is a large load on the front gear synchronizers, which leads to their rapid wear and failure.

Transmission tuning. How to choose gear ratios for a gearbox?
Most of the technologies used in transmission tuning are proven in motorsports. The transmission of any, especially a sports car, is the most important mechanism for realizing the dynamic characteristics of the engine. Even with a relatively weak engine, the car can be fast due to correctly selected gear ratios.
In motorsport, synchronized (as on 'road' cars) and non-synchronized (cam) gearboxes are used. Based on the shifting principle, they are divided into conventional (H-pattern) and sequential (with sequential gear selection, like on motorcycles).
In cars of a fairly serious level of preparation, cam gearboxes are used. They have a number of advantages - they can withstand higher loads (due to the shape of the tooth and the gear-cam clutch engagement), allow experienced pilots to spend less time changing gears due to incomplete squeezing of the clutch or without squeezing the clutch at all, they do not destroy synchronizers (which are simply No).
For normal road traffic, cam gearboxes are practically unsuitable, since they are quite noisy (due to the operation of spur gear pairs), “hard” when engaging a gear, and have a relatively short resource. In addition, they are disproportionately more expensive than synchronized ones and require regular qualified maintenance.
Synchronized gearboxes differ from standard ones only in gear ratios. In some cases (VAZ-2108 and -2110) it is possible to add a 6th gear. The correct selection of gear ratios of the main gearbox pair, the input shaft and the driven gears of the secondary shaft is the key to coordinated operation of the transmission. Gear ratios are selected depending on the power and torque characteristics of the engine, wheel size and, most importantly, on the wishes of the car owner.
How to set preload
Preload adjustment is carried out by installing a package of special spring washers that push the gears inside the lock. A complete package of such special washers, when folded together, is 1 cm thick, but all the washers are different in thickness so that you can adjust the differential preload moment.
To adjust the preload you will need:
- pointer torque wrench (a wrench with clicks is not suitable, it will take a long time to set up);
- a homemade special part made from a simple internal grenade (cut off and a bolt welded to it) - see the video below;
- set of spring washers (rings);
Procedure for adjusting preload:
- Disassemble the locking differential (remember the sequence). After removing the cover, pull out the axle shaft auger gear; behind it comes a narrow gear with a large internal hole, but which has a side; then come those same adjusting spring washers. You can pull out the screw satellites (the preloads themselves) to check how much wear they have.
- Install new washers.
- Collect.
- Using a torque wrench and a special homemade part, we determine the tightening torque. When the key begins to turn, at this moment the arrow shows the tension torque.

A preload of up to 5 kg does not flatten the washer to a flat state; such a tension moment is considered a resource tension. Locking with a tension of up to 5 kg will help not significantly lose its characteristics for about 4 years. Any blocking with tension in the first couple of months loses about 1 kg of tension.
Experts recommend making a preload of no more than 5 kg for a self-locking front differential, and no more than 7 kg for a rear differential. At a maximum differential preload of, for example, 9 kg, all spring washers will already be pressed and the effect of the springs will be lost.
Do-it-yourself tuning of the VAZ 2109. Replacing the carburetor
The purpose of this work is one - to increase power. Here, as they say, one head is good, but two are better. One carburetor is not needed, two carburetors are needed. This technological modification gives the engine additional power. You can also treat the carburetor intake manifold. Chassis tuning is a separate topic and consists of two blocks: suspension tuning and brake tuning.
The suspension can be improved in three ways:
- Replace the old with the new. Update the mechanism in full. Simply install a proprietary, branded gas-oil shock absorber;
- Strengthen the rigidity of the machine by replacing parts;
- Cut the spring substantially and lower the suspension steeply.
Due to this upgrade, the car will gain additional stability and can be extremely grouped on turns.
Like all members of the large VAZ family, the “nine” has rear drum brakes. It makes sense to change them to disk ones.
Installing an automatic transmission on a VAZ 2114
— As practice shows, the best option for a VAZ 2114 car is an automatic transmission from a Toyota Camry car. Previously, the automatic transmission from Toyota Camry undergoes a major overhaul with the replacement of worn parts.
— Installing an automatic transmission on a VAZ 2114 begins with preparing the car for such a replacement. The air intake system is removed from the engine compartment, the front wheels are removed, the suspension and steering gear are disassembled, and the axle shafts are removed.

Differential

That is why sports cars have a self-locking differential, the main parameter of which is the locking coefficient. The maximum value cannot be greater than 1 - in this case the wheels rotate at the same angular speeds and the wheels do not have a load difference.
However, in practice this is only required for SUVs, and even then not always. A standard road car has a differential ratio of up to 0.7. The value may be changed depending on operating conditions. If the coefficient is too high, then there is a possibility of demolishing the front axle when cornering.
Independently removing and blocking the differential can lead to the need to repair the VAZ 2109 gearbox, and incorrectly performed blocking will lead to noise and hum from the axle, which will still require replacement.

Every driver knows that the condition of the suspension has a significant impact on the driving performance of the car. For example, a low-quality shock absorber will double the braking distance. That is why modernizing the suspension of the “ninety-nine” is a topic that will be useful to everyone.

The stiffness of the new shock absorbers will slightly reduce the smoothness of the ride, but you shouldn’t get hung up on this, as you get much more benefits. When choosing new shock absorbers, you should look at the table of interchangeability of shock-absorbing devices. Standard springs, working in conjunction with shock absorbers, have a number of their own shortcomings, which can only be eliminated by replacing them with new ones. The car jerks when starting, it is impossible to shift into gear
The cause of the malfunction is not always the VAZ-2109 gearbox itself. Repairing it may not save it if the clutch assembly is faulty. But it is this system that interacts with the gearbox and engine. It is through the clutch disc that torque is transmitted from the flywheel to the transmission shaft. Typically, this unit serves at least 120 thousand kilometers. But many “nines” have old-style odometers, which reset to zero at 100 thousand.
It is difficult for the driver to control when this or that part in the clutch has been replaced. If the car jerks at start-up and the transmission is difficult to turn on, most likely the disc has been worn out. The plates wear out on it and the damper springs fly out. The petals on the clutch basket are also bent. We have already said about bearings that they are noisy. All this together affects the behavior of the car on the road.
Advanced tuning
The advanced column includes many modifications at once, among which are tuning the VAZ 2109 engine, replacing shock absorbers, brake pads, discs themselves, and visual modifications, such as replacing bumpers and painting.
It is important to understand that all this makes sense to do only if the car was initially in fairly good condition, and we are now talking to me about individual parts, but about the base - the body and its components

The process of replacing the gearbox rocker
Dismantling the old rod
First you need to loosen the clamp on the main rod and remove the hinge from it. To do this, use a 13mm wrench. Next, remove the boot and, using a 10mm wrench, unscrew the bolt on the desired cardan. Usually it is fixed almost tightly, so here you will need a hammer to loosen it a little with gentle blows. By the way, you can immediately check the condition of the oil seal and, in case of any defects, replace it with a new one.

Having removed the old cardan, you can begin installing the new one. To do this, you must first put on the boot. Next, we place a new cardan on the gear selector rod and secure it with a fixing bolt. Be sure to make sure that the bolt fits into the special recess on the rod. Also, do not forget to apply thread locker to the bot so that it does not unscrew due to vibration.
The next step is to put the drive rod on the rod. For some models, the stem from Kalina will have to be shortened by about 1.5 cm.
Adjustment
Next, you must carefully adjust the position of the lever so that it is centered with a slight offset to the right. Here we will need an assistant who will have to monitor the placement of the lever in the cabin. After installation is complete, tighten the clamp, while an assistant must hold the lever from moving.

By the way, some craftsmen cope with shortening the scenes without buying a new one. To do this, you need to disassemble the slide, as in the previous paragraph, and trim the necessary parts using a grinder. Next, weld a piece of pipe and sheet metal into the rod.
