The main components of an SUV require more frequent maintenance than the same components of other cars. This is due to the conditions of use of the machine and engine power. The correct choice of oil for the transfer case of the UAZ Patriot prevents premature wear of parts and improves the performance of the vehicle.
Bridges
The plant recommends replacing the oil in the rear and front axle crankcases every 30 thousand kilometers. The volume of oil poured into the front axle crankcase is 1.4 liters. The rear axle crankcase holds 1.3 liters. To replace, we will need a 12mm hex wrench and a working container. It is better to drain the oil within 15 minutes after the trip, while it is relatively liquid.
- Place a container under the hole to drain the oil from the crankcase.
- To make draining easier, remove the oil filler plug.
- Remove the drain plug and drain the oil.
- Clean the oil drain plug from dirt and metal particles and install it in place.
- Fill the crankcase of the desired axle with fresh oil using a syringe to the level of the oil filler hole.
According to the advice of experienced people, it is recommended to fill each bridge with oil, then tighten the plug, unscrew the breather and add another 200 ml of transmission.
It is recommended to fill all seasons - SAE 75W/90 according to API GL-5. Forum members recommend Castrol Syntrax Longlife 75w90.

Oil selection
Let's briefly consider which oil is best to pour into the Republic of Kazakhstan. So, the manufacturer recommends pouring gear oil with a viscosity grade of 75W-85 into the transfer case. In this case, you can use both synthetics and semi-synthetics. It is not recommended to pour mineral fluids into the transfer case, gearbox, axles and engine. Why? You can learn more about this from the material on changing the oil in the gearbox. The manufacturer recommends the following types of transmission fluids for the transfer case of an SUV:
But as practice shows, few people attach importance to such recommendations and each motorist individually chooses for his car what, in his opinion, is the best option or the optimal one if there is a lack of financial resources. But it is better to pour only high-quality oil into the transfer case, as well as into the engine and axles, otherwise it will negatively affect the functioning of the unit and its service life, with subsequent failure of parts. Below is a sign that may be useful for owners of UAZ Patriot SUVs.
Often, drivers fill in the same oil that is used in the gearbox and axles. You can find out more about this in this material. Next, we will look at how the UAZ Patriot SUV is replaced in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The need to meet deadlines
Before we begin to consider the question of how to replace the lubricant in the Republic of Kazakhstan on a UAZ Patriot SUV, let’s consider when such actions are necessary. So, based on the recommendations of the manufacturer of the famous Russian SUV, it should be noted that the first replacement of the lubricant is recommended after 2500-5000 km. This is provided that the car is purchased directly from the assembly line. But few people pay attention to such recommendations and often only the engine oil is changed. In the best case, replacement in the transfer case occurs at a mileage of 20-30 thousand km. Why does the manufacturer recommend replacing the lubricant after such a short time? Because the car is new and its parts have not yet gotten used to each other, so the first thousand kilometers are testing.
If you do not resort to replacing the lubricant after the specified period, a lot of tiny metal particles are formed in the oil from the initial grinding in of new parts, and they soon begin to vigorously wear out the working surfaces of the parts. This subsequently leads to a reduction in the service life of the mechanism as a whole. Therefore, the plant recommends, and the owners independently decide on such events.
Unassembled box
How much lubricant is needed for the transfer case of an SUV? According to the recommendations of Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant engineers, 0.7 liters of oil must be poured into the transfer case of a UAZ Patriot. Each subsequent replacement of the lubricant should be carried out in the transfer case every 25-70 thousand kilometers, which depends on the type of material used and the operating conditions of the car. In particular, mineral water should be changed every 25 thousand km, and synthetics every 65-70 km. How the material is directly replaced will be discussed below.
Replacement process
First you need to select the necessary tool for the work. Therefore, you will need a “12” hex key, a syringe for filling and a container for draining the waste. It is better to place the machine on an inspection hole so that it is convenient to carry out maintenance work. Before replacing, you should warm up the car by driving it for at least 15 minutes. In this case, the waste will become much thinner and flow out of the transfer case as much as possible.
Location of plugs on the transfer case
Oil into the syringe, then into the dispenser
If, during the process of draining the lubricant, you notice that its composition is a dark liquid that practically no longer has its original characteristics, then you should conclude that the transfer case needs more frequent oil changes.

All filling capacities of the Patriot SUV
Everyone knows that filling tanks are units that require the presence of working fluid. By the way, the UAZ Patriot is equipped with two refueling tanks at once, and this allows the SUV to fill almost 2 times more fuel, almost up to 80 liters. Not all cars in this class can boast the same gas tank design.

When is replacement necessary?
The frequency of oil changes in each transmission unit is regulated by the manufacturer in the user manual. For cars that have just left the assembly line, the first change of transmission fluids should be performed no later than after five thousand kilometers traveled. Such a short interval is explained by the fact that after assembly, new structural parts are rubbed against each other during the running-in procedure, during which there is a possibility of the formation of small metal particles, the presence of which can negatively affect the operating life of the components and the machine.
Further changes of the emulsion in the gearbox, transfer case and axles are regulated by the manufacturer at intervals after every thirty thousand vehicle miles. It should be understood that the interval between procedures may vary depending on how high-quality the product is poured into the transmission, as well as on the operating conditions of the vehicle.
project "UAZBUKA": Loaf Changing oils in the transmission.
According to the service book, an oil change in the transfer case, gearbox, and front and rear axle gearboxes is expected at a mileage of 45,000 km. But an unpleasant crunching sound in the 5-speed gearbox when switching from 1st to 2nd gear, difficulties when switching in the gearbox and gearbox, as well as fogging of the gearbox housing with oil led to the idea of replacing it. Well, since we are changing the checkpoints and the Republic of Kazakhstan, then we will change them in the bridges at the same time. The breather is working properly and the previous inspection 1 thousand km ago did not reveal any traces.
For replacement in the gearbox and RC, this oil of standard GL-4 was prepared. It is designed for harsh conditions, and experience shows that it works great in automotive gearboxes.
We drain the engine and gearbox of this color, very thin oil. Mileage - 6800km!
The drop on the left is what was drained, on the right is what was changed to for color comparison
And this is the quantity. It should be 1.7L Gearbox5 + 0.7L RK. About 300 ml is missing. Leaked through the RK? Unlikely…
Fresh oil poured into the filling device.
And this is what is in the rear axle. (ZM) In comparison, a drop of pure oil is nearby. The most interesting thing is that exactly the same dirty oil was drained from the front axle! The front gearbox was used for 1-1.5 thousand km. Because there are couplings on the wheels. And again the oil is like liquid compote...
The ZM and PM gearboxes must be filled with oil according to the GL-5 standard or, in our words, hypoid. We took simple, inexpensive mineral oil. It's just as thick as it should be! The temperature of both the old and new oils is the same.
A test drive showed a decrease in noise, all gears shift smoothly, and the run-out of a cold car has increased. As a result, we say - change the oil immediately after purchase! The price of the issue is not worth risking the units.
Oil filter
The factory recommends the Kolan 2105C oil filter. Although the Kolan 2101C filter from the same manufacturer is offered for sale for the UAZ Patriot. There are many other brands of oil filter manufacturers on our market.
FRAM – for UAZ Patriot the FRAM PH8A filter is suitable,
MANN Filter. According to the catalog, the manufacturer recommends us the W920/21 filter; you can also select W940/4 based on the parameters.
SCT Germany . The manufacturer does not offer anything for our car, we delve into the catalog, the result is SM-180.
Nevsky. Refer to the catalog, NF-1001 and NF-1010 are suitable
The main thing to remember is not to reuse used oil. And you shouldn’t pour oil on the ground, remember that even weeds won’t grow in this place for another 3 years!
This is interesting: How many liters of antifreeze in a VAZ 2115
Let's sum it up
UAZ Patriot transmission units are designed to operate in aggressive operating conditions, and therefore are characterized by increased endurance. Despite this, their operational period directly depends on the owner’s compliance with the regulations for their maintenance. Irregular oil changes or completely ignoring them can cause vehicle failure, reducing its handling, maneuverability and safety on the road.
It is not difficult to carry out routine maintenance of axles, transfer cases and gearboxes at home, but it is advisable to replace the transmission oil in all components, which, on the one hand, will allow you not to get confused about the timing of re-replacement, and on the other hand, will extend the life of the car. And, most importantly, do not skimp on the quality of the lubricant; the operational period of components, assemblies and the vehicle as a whole depends on this.
Changing the gearbox oil
The gearbox housing holds 2.5 liters of oil. Ulyanovsk residents recommend changing the oil every 20,000 km. But in reality this figure is close to 17 thousand. And if you operate a car in a large city with heavy traffic, then, as forum members recommend, it is better to change the oil every 15 thousand km. To change the oil in the gearbox you will need: a 23mm wrench and a 24mm socket wrench.
We unscrew the filler plug with a 23 wrench and the drain plug with a 24 socket wrench. Then everything is the same as when changing the oil in the axles and transfer case. It is recommended to fill ZIC GF Top75W-85, ZIC G-FF 75W-85, GT Transmission FF SAE 75W-85 according to API GL-4
ATTENTION!
Dymos gearbox and Dymos use the same oil. Check the oil and replace it in the gearbox and transfer case at the same time.
Dymos gearbox and the transfer case of UAZ OJSC use different oils; mixing them is not allowed .
Transmission oils for UAZ gearboxes, transfer cases and axles, classification of oils
Transmission oils are designed to lubricate parts of manual transmissions, transfer cases and drive axles. They create a strong lubricating film at the contact points of the parts of these units, which can withstand heavy loads.
Gear oils are defined and differentiated by classifications that are widely accepted today: SAE J306 for viscosity, such as 80W, 90, 75W-85 or 80W-90, and API, which contains a comprehensive assessment of gear oils for performance properties, such as GL-4 or GL-5 . In addition, along with the API specification, indicators according to the American military specification, denoted by the MIL index, may sometimes be used. For example MIL-L-2105A or MIL-L-2105B.
Features of the classification of transmission oils according to SAE and API
SAE viscosity grades with the letter W refer to seasonal oils for the cold season, for example 75W or 80W.
Accordingly, without W - to oils for warm summer time, for example 90 or 140.
However, since the resource of transmission oils is quite long, using seasonal oils in everyday use, changing them in units every six months, is very inconvenient and not economically profitable.
The API classification currently contains five categories - GL-1, GL-2, GL-3, GL-4 and GL-5, which show the applicability and quality level of gear oils. For example, in category GL-5 - oil contains extreme pressure, anti-wear and other additives, used for hypoid and other types of gears in gearboxes and drive axles of cars.
Transmission oils for UAZ Hunter and UAZ Patriot gearboxes
Several types of synchronized gearboxes can be installed on UAZ Hunter cars and all models based on it: a four-speed Russian-made, a five-speed ADS made in China or a five-speed DYMOS made in Korea. On the UAZ Patriot and all models based on it, only a Korean-made five-speed DYMOS gearbox is installed.
The plant recommends filling the four-speed gearbox with SAE 75W-90 gear oil according to API GL-3. The Chinese-made five-speed ADS gearbox and the Korean-made five-speed DYMOS gearbox are SAE 75W-85, API GL-4.
Transmission oils for mechanical transfer case UAZ Hunter and UAZ Patriot
When equipping a vehicle with a four-speed or five-speed ADS gearbox, the plant recommends filling the mechanical transfer case produced by UAZ OJSC with the same transmission oil as the box.
This is quite justified, since it is due to the fact that during operation, partial flow of oil from the gearbox to the transfer case is possible.
The oil level in the gearbox may drop by 8 mm. relative to the lower edge of the filler hole and will accordingly rise in the transfer case.
When the car is equipped with a Korean five-speed DYMOS gearbox, it is recommended to fill the mechanical transfer case with SAE 75W-90 gear oil according to API - GL-3.
Although there is no particular point in this, since oil from the DYMOS box also tends to flow into the transfer case, so it is more rational to fill both units with the same oil to prevent possible mixing of different oils.
Transmission oils for the front and rear axles of the UAZ Hunter and UAZ Patriot
In the crankcase of both axles, the manufacturer recommends using transmission oil SAE 75W-90 according to API - GL-5.
Information on the types of oil required
Below are the brands of oils recommended for the transfer case.
From synthetic gear oils:
ZIC GF TOP. This oil is one of the most popular today. The oil is ideal for many vehicle components, including the transfer case, when operating in regions with low temperatures, since it is resistant to fairly low temperatures. A separate feature of this lubricating fluid is that there are practically no fakes on the market now; at least you can purchase fake oil with an extremely low probability. This is explained by the fact that the original is sold in a canister, which is made using a special technology, which is what makes the difference. According to numerous reviews, this oil helps reduce noise in the transmission system.
Its main advantages are:
- Resistance to chemical processes (including oxidation and destruction of sealing materials);
- The presence of antifriction properties;
- Reasonable price per canister.
From semi-synthetic oils:
LIQUI MOLY HYPOID-GETRIEBEOIL TDL 75W-90. A universal lubricating fluid manufactured by a well-known German manufacturer. In addition to versatility of use, this brand has excellent anti-friction properties, increased wear resistance and much more. In terms of price-quality ratio, this gear oil is one of the best in its segment.
Its main advantages are:
- Universal application;
- Availability of excellent anti-corrosion properties;
- High wear resistance;
- Reasonable price per canister.
From mineral oils:
LIQUI MOLY GETRIEBEOIL 85W-90 . This is a mineral lubricating fluid from a German manufacturer. It differs from most of its analogues in the highest quality of those components that are present in the oil. In addition, the liquid is supplemented with special additives, which, together with the first point, gives the product excellent properties, which in turn ensures reliable operation of the mechanical unit. Due to its resistance to a wide range of temperatures, this gear oil can be used all year round. At harsh temperatures, the oil does not thicken, which ensures effective lubrication of the rubbing elements. When using this oil, the seals of the manual transmission and transfer case will not be damaged, since it is resistant to chemical processes.
Its main advantages are:
- High wear resistance;
- High resistance to low temperature operating conditions;
- Universal application.
TOTAL TRANSMISSION GEAR 8 75W-80 . In terms of versatility and availability, this transmission fluid is also very popular among owners of foreign and domestic passenger cars. The oil has a very good value for money. Unlike most other mineral oils, this product has extended drain intervals.
Its main advantages are:
- Excellent value for money;
- Optimal fluidity in any temperature conditions;
- Optimal viscosity in any temperature conditions;
- High resistance to low temperature operating conditions.
LUKOIL 80W90 TM-4 . The Russian company Lukoil is today the leader among domestic producers. This was facilitated not only by the very reasonable cost, but also by the fact that there are special additives that give the oil beneficial properties. It has a universal purpose, and therefore can be used not only in gearboxes, but also in transfer cases. It has excellent wear resistance, anti-oxidation and anti-corrosion properties.
Its main advantages are:
- Reasonable price per canister;
- The composition contains complex elements;
- Good resistance to low temperature operating conditions.
- Effective lubrication.
ZMZ engine maintenance
The engine in the Patriot is domestic ZMZ, not the most reliable. But, if you maintain it efficiently and pour good oil on time, then it will live for a long time.
LIqui MOly produces special products for VAZ, UAZ and GAZ. This is the Optimal series with wear additives and excellent properties to protect parts from aging and scuffing. The piston will work reliably.
You can also consider Syntoil High Tech 5W40 LIqui Moly pure synthetics 100 PAO, for an extended replacement interval of up to 15,000 km. mileage
Syntoil also withstands excessive loads when driving uphill, off-road and under heavy loads when driving in mud and frequent wheel slipping.
The volume of filling into the engine is up to 5 liters of oil + topping up to 3 liters if driving off-road.
Cooling system
To replace, take red antifreeze with the best properties against corrosion and overheating up to 130 C. Meguin antifreeze will cope well with elevated temperatures and its removal from the system. Will retain its properties under high loads and driving through mud at high speeds.
Do not allow oil starvation in the ZMZ engine.
Engine
Check the oil level regularly and top it up to ensure proper operation, especially before long trips.
Check the level when the car is on a flat horizontal platform. After stopping the engine, the oil level should be checked no earlier than 15 minutes later.
The amount of oil required to top up from the “MIN” mark to the “MAX” mark is approximately 1 liter.
Attention!
Filling engine oil at a level above the “MAX” mark will lead to disruption of normal engine operation: increased oil waste, increased toxicity, contamination and failure of spark plugs.
Changing the oil must be done together with replacing the oil filter. Drain the oil with the engine warm.
To change the oil, place the car on a level surface or overpass, open the engine cover and unscrew the engine oil sump drain plug with a 24 mm wrench. The oil drains for at least 10 minutes.
Be careful when draining the oil - the oil may be very hot.
Before tightening the drain plug, check the condition of the sealing gasket. Replace the damaged gasket.
At the same time as changing the oil, the oil filter must be replaced. Use a special wrench to loosen the oil filter. If there is no such key, pierce the filter housing with a screwdriver and, using it as a lever, unscrew the filter, punching the filter as close to the bottom as possible so as not to damage the fitting. You can also use a double-folded strip of coarse sandpaper, wrap it around the filter and push it out of place with your hands. Before installing the filter, lubricate the rubber filter gasket with engine oil. Screw the filter onto the fitting until the rubber gasket of the filter touches the surface of the cylinder block and then tighten it by hand ¾ of a turn.
Fill with fresh oil to the top mark on the dipstick and start the engine. After turning off the emergency pressure lamp, stop the engine and make sure there is no oil leakage from under the filter gasket. Allow the oil to drain into the crankcase for 10 minutes and check the oil level again, adding if necessary.
When replacing one brand of oil with another, it is necessary to flush the engine lubrication system. To do this you need:
- Drain the used oil from the crankcase of a warm engine;
- pour special flushing or replacement oil 2-4 mm above the upper “MAX” mark of the indicator;
- start the engine and let it run at minimum crankshaft speed for at least 10 minutes;
- drain the special flushing or replacement oil;
- replace the oil filter;
- add fresh oil;
- start the engine. After turning off the emergency oil pressure lamp
- stop the engine and check the oil level after 15 minutes. If necessary, add oil.
Ulyanovsk residents recommend filling their engines with synthetic oil with a viscosity index depending on the operating temperature. The manufacturer recommends original oils of its own production:
UAZ Motor Oil Premium 5W-40 for the central region;
Judging by the tests carried out by the oil club and other resources, this oil is almost identical to the familiar Lukoil Lux 5w40 SN/CF
A liter of original UAZ oil costs 250 rubles, and Lukoil is around 400 rubles.
Do not mix oils of different brands and with different viscosities!
Oil for the rear axle of a UAZ, how much to fill, which one to choose?
Good afternoon everyone.
The topic of today's article is oil in the rear axle of a UAZ. I think you’ve already guessed from the title what the article is about, so there won’t be the usual brief review for our site. Let's agree on the shore that there is no point in making a gradation based on cars, i.e. the bridge of the loaf, hunter and patriot is no different - SPICER is installed from the factory today. And the “collective farms” and “voyaki” bridges are much less demanding on oil than current bridges. Accordingly, there is no difference which UAZ and which bridge. Recommendations for choosing oil are valid for all UAZ vehicles of all years of manufacture.
Selection by oil type.
Classics of the genre - synthetics, semi-synthetics and mineral water. It would seem - pour whatever is more expensive and change it according to the instructions and you will be happy... but not everything is so simple...
The choice of oil for the rear axle, specifically in the case of a UAZ, is not obvious. The fact is that oil of the same viscosity characteristic varies greatly in price depending on the type. Mineral water Lukoil GL5 85W90 costs about 300 rubles per liter, synthetic mannol of similar viscosity already costs 800 rubles for the same “litrushka”.
Now why is it difficult to choose - if you often go to the forest (and how could it be otherwise with an UAZ), and constantly storm puddles and swamps, water will inevitably get into bridges through breathers. Water in oil is his guaranteed death... and operating the bridge on a cocktail of oil and water will not improve his health. Therefore, if you operate a UAZ only in the summer for trophy raids, it is cheaper to pour mineral water and change it at the first suspicion of water ingress!
In winter, synthetics definitely rule, due to greater temperature stability. A car running on synthetics does not need to be “rolled out”; it can drive almost as soon as the engine warms up and due to the viscosity of the oil in the transmission, it saves a lot of fuel! In fact, my gasoline consumption decreased from 18 to 17 liters after I changed the oil in the axles and gearbox to synthetic!
About semi-synthetics...
This oil should not be considered. The fact is that this is an ordinary mineral water with added additives, in fact it is the same mineral water, but more expensive... If you want to pay the labor of marketers, semi-synthetics are your choice, but for a car it makes no sense - in winter it thickens like mineral water, and in summer there is no difference...
We agreed - in the summer, if we constantly knead the dirt, use mineral water and change it more often, in the winter - synthetics. If we drive around the city all year round and use the UAZ as an ass-cart, it is better to completely switch to synthetics. There is no point in considering semi-synthetics.
Selection by viscosity.
There is often a recommendation to pour NIGROL into military bridges and collective farms. Nigrol is a residue (waste) from the direct distillation of oil mixed with asphalt tar!
So here are the UAZ drivers’ colleagues. Such oil has not existed in nature for 60 years, and what is now sold under the brand name nigrol is TEP-15, it cannot be called nigrol….
I also want to warn you against the TAD 17 recommended by many... that “TAD” is long gone. And (imported additives) ran out long ago, and what is now being sold under this brand is unknown even to those who bottle this oil.
The design of the UAZ differential is not well thought out, and the gears have a high slip coefficient; therefore, pouring low-quality oil is unacceptable! On nigrol the bridge will howl very quickly, on TAda - depending on your luck!
The factory recommends filling the bridge with oil with a viscosity according to SAE, 85w-90 . The manufacturer is not important! Change the oil on time and do not come into contact with burnt (left) oil. Personally, I use 75w-90 like this (yes, it comes in gl4, gl5 and gl4/5, I pour the last 2 depending on what is available):
If the axle howls (yes, on a UAZ it happens that the axle makes noise louder than the gearbox and transfer case combined), it is permissible to increase the viscosity of the oil in the axle to 85w-140, the same oil that the author of this article used for Hunter for 2 years, i.e. the bridge howled, thick oil was poured in, and the UAZ was sold with this oil!
How much oil goes into the rear axle of a UAZ
To the collective farm - 1.2 liters.
In any case, the same oil is poured into the front and rear axles, so when changing the oil in the axles, I always took 3 liters.
That's all for me today. Reliable UAZ vehicles and honest officials to all.
What kind of oil to fill in the gearbox
Compliance with the manufacturer's recommendations improves the performance characteristics of the machine - controllability, cross-country ability, reliability. The use of low-quality oil accelerates the wear of SUV parts. When choosing a lubricant, take into account which part will be processed with this liquid:
- Transfer case housing. In this case, purchase lubricants with a viscosity index of 75W90 according to SAE. The recommended API product category is GL-3.
- Rear and front axles. For UAZ Patriot, it is recommended to purchase a lubricant that corresponds to class GL-5 in terms of performance, viscosity grade 75 W.
- Dymos gearbox. Lubricant corresponding to category GL-4 is poured here. The viscosity of the product is 75W85.
Buying 3 types of oil is not economically feasible.
The products are supplied in large volume containers. Leftover lubricant is not suitable for long-term storage. Experienced drivers advise using a GL-4 category product with a viscosity of 75W90 to process all components. The material has proven itself well when poured into the main components of a Russian SUV.
Which transfer case is better for a UAZ?
Different UAZs (models and years of production) are equipped with different transfer cases. At the same time, motorists often argue which is better: a helical transfer case on an UAZ or a straight-cut, single-lever or double-lever?
The Ulyanovsk plant predominantly uses helical transfer gears, which, due to the larger number of teeth in engagement, are capable of transmitting greater torque. As for the spur tooth, it experiences only radial loads, without axial ones, which in theory should provide it with a longer shelf life.
However, in practice they are both good.
Let's start changing the oil
To change the transmission oil, you first need to acquire the following materials: two keys for 23 and 24, a technical container (the old oil will drain into it), a filling syringe, a new oil filter, new oil, rags, gloves.
The procedure for changing the oil in a UAZ Patriot manual transmission:
- We drive 10 kilometers to warm up the engine to operating temperature.
- We place the car on an overpass, or use a lift or inspection pit. In any case, it is necessary to provide full access to the bottom of the car
- We climb under the car and place a technical container. The waste will flow into it
- On the gearbox we find the oil drain plug, unscrew it with a 23 key, then observe the process of the used oil flowing out along with dirt and metal shavings
- Wait for the old fluid to drain. After making sure that the oil has been completely drained, tighten the plug, first cleaning it and the hole from dirt and soot. The copper gasket on the drain plug may have deteriorated. In this case, you will have to install a new plug
- Fill the box with new lubricant using a filling syringe. It is necessary to pour in a certain amount of liquid equal to 2.5 liters. You may need to add a little more oil later. So, let's put the plug in place. At this point, the process of changing the oil in the UAZ Patriot manual transmission has been successfully completed, and you can begin further operation of the car.
How to change the oil in a UAZ Patriot gearbox
Before starting work, prepare new lubricant, wrenches with heads of different diameters, a syringe for refilling, technical containers, rags, gloves, and a new filter.
How much oil is in a box of Daymos UAZ Patriot
The oil volume in the UAZ Patriot transmission is standard – 1.5-1.6 liters. It is recommended to take a small supply so that there is definitely enough transmission for the work. If the system needs to be flushed, add a couple more liters of liquid.
How to change and fill oil in a UAZ Patriot box
When the transmission oil for UAZ Patriot, as well as tools and accessories are ready, you can start replacing. Procedure:
- Drive about 10 km to warm up the engine to operating temperatures.
- Drive the car onto an overpass or, if it is more convenient, use an inspection hole or a lift. You need to gain full access to the car from below.
- Get under the car and place a container under the drain hole. The waste will flow into it, it will be useful to assess the quality and condition of the liquid.
- Find the oil drain plug on the manual transmission, unscrew it with the 23rd key, and make sure that the oil flows out as needed.
- Wait until the old liquid drains out, then tighten the plug, having first cleared the hole of soot and dirt. Probably, the copper gasket has become unusable - then a new one is put in its place.
- Fill the manual transmission with new lubricant using a filling syringe. You need to pour in up to 2 liters or a volume equal to the drained volume. Oil should be purchased in reserve - sometimes checking the level shows that it is insufficient, in which case it is topped up.
At this point, the replacement process can be considered successfully completed.
How to check the oil level in a UAZ Patriot box
According to the regulations, oil is poured into the Korean UAZ Patriot gearbox at specified intervals, but there are situations when they can and should be reduced. To assess the condition of the lubricant and its quantity, you need to do regular level tests. To carry out the procedure, prepare a syringe, a clean rag, and a key with a 23 head.
Procedure:
- Drive the car onto a viewing hole or lift.
- Remove all dirt from the oil filler plug. The lubrication level is limited by the lower edge of the oil filler hatch, which is located on the right side of the manual transmission housing.
- Unscrew the hole plug and wipe it clean.
- Test the grease content.
- Add lubricant with a syringe if it is not enough.
- Return the plug to its place and remove any spills from the body with a rag.
You can add lubricant if the one already in the box is in good condition. In other cases, only complete maintenance with flushing of the system will help.
Important! If there is a lot of transmission fluid in the system, immediately after unscrewing the oil filler plug, it will flow out.

Procedure
The procedure for replacing lubricant in Patriot transmission units is not particularly complicated, however, it requires patience and attentiveness from the performer. To complete the work in full, you will need to drain the used fluid from each of the system components one by one, replacing it with new lubricant. For this purpose, it is first necessary to prepare new oil in a volume sufficient for replacement, a set of car keys, containers for used fluid, as well as work clothes.
The task of replacing fluid in transmission units is carried out from the bottom of the car. In service centers, special lifts are used to ensure unhindered access to drain openings; at home, it will be enough to drive the vehicle onto a pit or overpass.
Before performing the operation, it is important to drive an SUV for about ten kilometers so that the lubricant in the system warms up to operating temperature. Under the influence of temperatures, it will become liquid and merge from the aggregates faster and better. Further measures are carried out in accordance with the work schedule for each transmission unit.
Changing the oil in axles
The procedures for changing the oil in UAZ Patriot axles do not differ in execution technology, so let’s look at the procedure for implementing the tasks using the rear axle as an example. In practice, you can successfully perform a replacement by following simple instructions from the car manufacturer:
- Locate the drain and fill caps, which are located on the rear axle housing. First, you need to clean the surfaces adjacent to the openings with a metal brush from dirt to avoid it getting into the system.
- Next, unscrew the filler plug to relieve pressure, after which you can unscrew the cover of the drainage hole, having previously placed a waste container under it.
- While the oil is draining, the plugs must be thoroughly cleaned of metal shavings that may accumulate on the inside of the caps during operation of the machine. After the oil has drained, the oil drain plug is installed in place and clamped with the recommended force.
- Using a technical syringe, lubricant is poured into the oil filler opening until it begins to flow out of the hole. This procedure will require about 1.3 liters of oil, depending on the quality of the waste drain.
- Don't forget to tighten the filler cap.
The oil change in the front axle of a UAZ Patriot is carried out in a similar way, with the only difference being that the oil filler and drain plugs must be looked for on the front axle housing. The front axle housing will contain no more than 1.4 liters of lubricant. At this point, the procedure for replacing the lubricant in UAZ Patriot axles can be considered successfully completed. Then you can move on to changing the oil in the transfer case and gearbox.
Changing the lubricant in the transfer case
The methodology for changing the oil in the transfer case of a UAZ Patriot is practically no different from the procedure for changing transmission fluid in axles. To perform the procedure, you will need to find the drain and filler holes, clean the surfaces one by one from dirt accumulations and unscrew the filler plug. Then the waste is removed into the prepared container through the drain opening. Once the liquid has drained, you need to tighten the drain plug and fill the oil through the filling opening using a technical syringe to the limit, which will be a little more than two and a half liters in volume.
Along with changing the oil in the axles and transfer case, it is recommended to change the lubricant in the gearbox, the technology of which is the same as in previous situations. When pouring new oil into the gearbox, the level should be monitored using a special dipstick with which the car is equipped. After filling and running in the car, you will need to recheck the level in the gearbox; you may need to top up the oil to normal.
After replacing the lubricant in all transmission components, you need to start the car and drive it for several kilometers, after which you drive it onto the overpass again and check all the joints for fluid leaks, and if necessary, tighten the plugs more tightly.
Changing the oil in axles. — logbook UAZ Patriot Baby Patrick 2008 on DRIVE2
And so, I got to the bridges, or rather to changing the oil in them. I also needed to find out the reason for the large idle rotation of the flange, about 90 degrees, of the front axle in which the self-block is installed. The previous owners had no idea what company it was. I drove the car into a warm box, unscrewed the drain and filler plugs on the front axle and saw what was inside.
This kind of oil, or rather an emulsion, was in the front axle. Clear signs of water getting inside the bridge.
While the remaining oil was draining, I opened the diff cover, but to my regret I didn’t find anything terrible there, the gap between the main pair of gears is minimal and almost not felt, the bearings are also free of play, but all the free play is on the axle shafts and their drive in the self-locking unit. In other words, the reason for such idle speed lies in the design of the self-block, I realized this when I looked at the cross-sectional photo of the self-blocks and their operating principle. I didn’t take a photo because there’s nothing to see there, I replaced the gasket and put the cover back in place. And while I was putting the cap on the front, the oil was draining from the rear axle, the situation with the oil there was similar, it was also gray.
When the old oil stopped dripping from the bridges, I started pouring new oil.
Of course, I overpaid a little with the oil, in another store the same thing costs 100 rubles less, but the seller is a wooden consultant, unlike the store where I bought the oil. In total, I spent 1.25 liters on the rear axle, and approximately 1.4 on the front axle. I filled until the moment when oil began to flow from the upper filler hole; in fact, it is also a level indicator.
In total, 3 liters of oil were purchased for 1000 rubles per liter, a cover gasket for 110 rubles and sealant for 100 rubles.
PS before the replacement, a slight hum was heard from the rear axle, after the replacement I still don’t understand it due to slush on the road, it’s just not audible. Next in line is changing the oil in the gearbox and transfer case.

The gearbox on every car is an important component of any vehicle, so its serviceability is an important factor. The SUV also has a gearbox, thanks to which it is possible to move at different speeds. In addition to the main parts, the gearbox is filled with oil, which requires periodic replacement. In this material we will pay attention to the process of changing the oil in the gearbox on a UAZ Patriot. How the oil is changed, when it is needed and what determines this period.
Basic breakdowns and diagnostics
The most common problems with the UAZ Patriot transfer case.
- the teeth of the gears broke;
- oil leaks through worn oil seals;
- the noise from the transfer case has increased;
- there has been significant wear or destruction of the bearings;
- chain malfunction or weakening of its tension (for Daimos);
- The downshift switches off by itself.
Possible causes of problems.
- The front axle has been engaged for too long.
- Long trips with improperly inflated tires.
- Excessive overloads during operation due to necessity (for example, rally) or incompetent driving.
- Failure of oil seals or bearings due to their poor quality.
- Insufficient oil level or untimely replacement.
- Using low-quality or inappropriate brand of oil.
- Runout of one of the cardan shafts due to a faulty bearing, broken crosspieces or untimely injection.
- Insufficient amount of lubricant in the spline joint of one of the cardan shafts.
- Incorrect transfer case tuning.
It is not so difficult to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between certain problems with the UAZ Patriot transfer case. The reason for the increased noise of the transfer case may be wear of the bearings, which in turn is caused by insufficient lubrication or contamination, or wear of the gears, caused by loose fasteners or poor-quality lubricant. Oil leakage indicates loose fastenings, wear of seals or gaskets, as well as microcracks in the housing. The reason for spontaneous switching off of a low gear (on an old-type UAZ Patriot transfer case) is often wear of the gear teeth, lack of gear engagement due to deformation of parts, or destruction of the bearings, leading to misalignment of the shafts.
The reasons for difficult gear shifting should be sought in dirty mechanisms, corrosion of parts, broken teeth or different tire swing radii.
Refueling volumes
To know how much oil is needed for a complete change, you need to study the instructions. Here are the volumes of such transfer case units:
- Bridges. 1.4 liters of lubricant are poured into the front part of this unit, and 1.3 liters into the rear part. The total volume is 2.7 liters.
- Handout. The capacity of this part is 700 ml.
- Checkpoint "Daimos". 2.5 liters of liquid are poured into this unit.
If each part uses its own oil, purchase a liter of fluid for the gearbox, 3 liters for axles and gearboxes. When using one type of product, all previously obtained indicators are summed up. The total volume will be 7 liters.
Refueling volumes
Having decided on the type of product required, the consumer, in order to buy it in sufficient quantities, needs to know how much oil in the UAZ Patriot will be required for a complete replacement. According to the vehicle instructions, the transmission units will require the following amount of fluid:
- The vehicle's axles will require a total of 2.7 liters of lubricant - 1.4 and 1.3 liters for the front and rear axles, respectively.
- The oil volume in the transfer case, according to the manual, is 0.7 liters.
- The volume of emulsion in the gearbox is 2.5 liters.
Accordingly, if you buy individual fluid for each of the components, then you will need to buy a liter of lubricant for the transfer case, and three liters of lubricant for the gearbox and axles. When deciding to fill with identical fluid for all UAZ Patriot transmission units, you will need to purchase six liters of oil.
