The new Lada Granta Hatchback is a restyling of the familiar Lada Kalina with minimal changes in the interior and equipment. The engines are the same, only the five-speed manual and robot have been slightly retuned. The main innovation is the shape of the front bumper in the new X-style of the brand.

Exterior

Lada Granda 2018-2019 has acquired a new front bumper with chrome X-inserts on the front bumper with an expanded air intake. In addition, the model has new head optics, which also required changes to the hood and fenders. Turn signals are integrated into the side rear-view mirrors, like the older XRAY and Vesta models. The rims have received a new original design.

At the rear, the new Lada Granta Hatchback differs from Kalina in the large LADA inscription. The trunk lock can now be equipped with an opening button and an electromechanical drive, but the initial versions of the hatchback retained the key cylinder.

Interior

There are minimal changes in the interior architecture of the updated Granta. The backlighting of the buttons turned from green to white, the rectangular ventilation deflectors in the center acquired an X-shaped edging, and the instrument panel was designed in the style of Vesta - the digitization was made radial, and the scales acquired orange rims.

The front seats received new upholstery and larger side support bolsters. The headrests in the car are slightly enlarged. All new Grants are now equipped with the ERA-GLONASS system with an emergency call button on the ceiling. Higher trim levels received a small (4 cm) height adjustment of the driver's seat.

The hatchback, like the other three models, is still based on the modernized Kalina chassis with a semi-independent rear spring suspension on an elastic beam and McPherson struts at the front. Among the innovations for the restyled Granta, it is worth noting the appearance in the wheel arches of soft fender liners made of a special material that do not absorb moisture and absorb impacts from stones.

Engines and Transmission

The engines and gearboxes remained the same, but for the manual and AMT robotic transmission, the gear ratio of the main pair was increased from 3.7:1 to 3.9:1, which made it possible to slightly reduce the acceleration time to hundreds. The robot has acquired a “crawling” mode for convenience in traffic jams (when you release the brake pedal in Drive mode, the car itself begins to quietly roll forward), as well as a “Sport” button, which activates faster switching.

Basic 1.6-liter eight-valve engine with 87 hp. and 140 Nm is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, providing the Lada Granta 2018 hatchback with acceleration to hundreds in 11.6 seconds and a top speed of 172 km/h. Average fuel consumption in the combined cycle is stated to be 6.8 liters per 100 kilometers, in the city – 9.1, and on the highway – 5.3 liters.

An intermediate 16-valve engine of the same volume produces 98 horsepower and 145 Nm of torque, and it is paired with a 4-band Japanese automatic transmission from Jatco. This version takes 13.1 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h, and the maximum speed reaches 176 kilometers per hour. The average consumption here is 7.2 l / 100 km, in city mode - 9.9, in highway mode - 6.1.

The top version of the Lada Granta 1.6 with a power of 106 hp. (148 Nm) can be purchased with both mechanics and AMT robotic transmission. In the first case, the hatchback is capable of accelerating to 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds, and in the second case – in 12.0 seconds; the top speed in both cases is 184 km/h. The plant also indicates identical gasoline consumption: 6.5 liters per hundred in the combined cycle, 8.7 in urban and 5.2 in suburban.

Equipment, Options and Prices

  • Initial version Standard includes only one airbag, audio preparation, ERA-GLONASS system, Isofix mount and 14-inch steel wheels.

  • The top-end Luxury equipment for the new Granta 2021 boasts foglights and full power accessories, 15-inch alloy wheels, climate control, remote central locking, standard alarm, heated windshield, adjustable driver's seat and seat belt fastenings in height, as well as folding in the ratio 60/40 backrests of the rear sofa.

In addition to the listed configurations, the Optima (26k rubles) and Prestige (19k rubles) packages are available for Granta. The first of them includes air conditioning and heated side mirrors, and the second provides rain and light sensors, a stabilization system, traction control, and rear parking sensors. Perhaps the most popular body style will continue to be the most affordable and practical sedan. This is where we should begin our selection of video stories.

Appearance

In general, the new body is very similar to what could be seen before. The same shapes are visible in the photo, and only the front bumper has received significant changes.

The car's muzzle has become a little longer, and is now located at a greater angle to the ground. There is practically no relief on it, if you do not pay attention to the modest recesses on the sides, directly under which new rectangular headlights filled with halogen lights are placed. The main part of the bumper is made in the shape of the letter “X”, which fans of the brand like so much. At the top you can find a narrow air intake strip consisting of a fine mesh and several horizontal stripes. In the center of the main air intake there is a chrome-plated Lada company badge.

The lower part of the bumper also houses air intake systems, which are framed inside by a chrome strip. You can also find here fog lights, which are installed here in an extended configuration. In general, Granta’s bumper began to look a lot like Vesta. Unfortunately, this is where the serious design differences from the old version of the car end.

The side of the car has not suffered any changes. Still, most of the body here is occupied by windows, which take on a variety of shapes and are separated by thick pillars. You can also find good mirrors here, which are sometimes equipped with turn signals. The doors here are decorated only with minor protrusions at the bottom. The slightly swollen wheel arches are also striking. The design of the discs has also changed slightly.

At the back you can already find a few more differences from the previous version. Like the sides, most of the tailgate is filled with window. On both sides it is surrounded by massive vertical marker optics lights. Among the decorations, there is a recess for a license plate, as well as a slightly protruding body kit, complemented by foglights and a plastic insert that has a towing eye and an opening for the exhaust pipe.

Six years after its appearance, the Lada Granta, AvtoVAZ’s most budget model, was restyled, and at the same time the Kalina family was abolished. And all these are links in one chain to reduce costs, optimize the model range and increase the attractiveness of Volzhsky Automobile Plant products in the eyes of consumers. On September 1, the updated Grants appeared in dealer showrooms, and we rushed to take the opportunity to try out the new consumer qualities of the car by testing a sedan in the maximum Luxe configuration with an automatic transmission and a 98-horsepower engine.

The number of changes really amounts to a full restyling; there are 150 new parts, visible and invisible. Moreover, all this happened simultaneously with the rebranding; the Kalina family ceased to exist, but its models moved to the Grant family, which increased to four bodies. And now, in addition to the sedan and liftback, it offers a hatchback and station wagon. All cars received a new uniform design of the front part of the body in the corporate X-style, in the spirit of Vesta. The changes clearly benefited Grant; while the predecessor had a formal, inexpressive design, the new car undoubtedly became more modern and harmonious.

The new, brighter look is formed by the radiator grille, headlights and bumper. Beautiful headlights, as it turned out, were an Indian design produced by an Uzbek-Korean enterprise. Here's a vinaigrette! Why the choice was made in favor of this particular unknown manufacturer, history is silent. Perhaps dumping prices for the initial delivery to the assembly line, perhaps something else... But, most likely, it will cost the consumer exorbitant prices, if not immediately, then later with possible repairs and the purchase of spare parts, unlike if there was, for example, OSVAR. So, Grant owners, take care of your headlights!

Also, the wings and hood were remade, which became a little longer, and the windshield washer nozzles from its surface were moved to a plastic panel in front of the windshield. The only question is: will ice and snow clog them in winter? Starting with the comfort package, rear-view mirrors are installed in body color and with turn signal repeaters. However, such mirrors were tested on expensive versions of the pre-restyling Grant. And another important innovation is that now all trim levels, without exception, will have bumpers in body color. The rear also has new bumpers with black plastic inserts on the bottom. But the most changes are in the rear of the sedan. The new trunk lid has a small spoiler. And the frame with the license plate moved from the bumper to the trunk lid, making the car visually more proportional from the rear.

There is one fundamental innovation in the interior. When Kalina left, she left her salon to Grant, and it’s good, after all, Kalinov’s interior will be preferable to Grant’s, and it will be more ergonomic, and prettier, and better finished. Additional decor has appeared on the center console in the area of ​​rectangular deflectors, the backlighting of buttons and panels is now white instead of green, and the orange rims of the instrument dials, like on Vesta, are, perhaps, all the innovations on the front panel. The seats have new dense textile upholstery and larger headrests, and the front ones also have larger side support bolsters - definitely better than before. For buyers of expensive versions, the presence of height adjustment of the driver's seat by 40 mm is now also relevant. But in reality, it turns out that a high seat installed on the same slide and height adjustment makes at least some sense only for drivers of shorter than average height. That is, the entire increase in the adjustment range came from the standard position upwards. And I am 183 cm tall and would like to go down a little, but this is impossible. So for tall drivers the new option is unnecessary.

Cheap, booming plastic? Yes. Well, what did you want in a car in the most budget price category? All the cars that are made richer cost noticeably more. But in general, everything was done quite carefully, in a word, there is progress compared to VAZ cars ten or even five years ago. This applies to both the assembly of the interior and the body, and the car as a whole. Granta is, as it was intended, a car for the undemanding budget class consumer, and that says it all. And he, this consumer, should be satisfied with everything, or almost everything. Therefore, I personally don’t see the point in expensive versions of Granta, only economical entry-level configurations for minimal money. Otherwise, Grant’s price is already invading Vesta’s price segment, where it is unlikely to look advantageous in comparison with its relative...

On the back sofa - no changes, “behind myself” I sit down with my knees lightly touching the upholstery of the front seat, but since the backs of the seats are soft, there are no problems with this. Everything in the trunk is also the same, with the only difference being that it is now equipped with a button with an electromechanical drive and does not look like a large iron box attached to the back of the car. Still, stamping under the license plate made the view of the Grant from behind really more harmonious.

And what we have on test is a sedan in the expensive Luxe configuration with a 16-valve 98-horsepower engine combined with a Japanese 4-speed Jatco automatic transmission and 15-inch alloy wheels. The simpler versions still have 14-inch wheels. By the way, the aggregate base of the new Grant has not changed; there are not many technical changes, but there are some. In addition to the mentioned engine, a basic 8-valve engine with an output of 87 hp is offered. paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, as well as a 16-valve engine, 106 hp. which can work in tandem not only with “mechanics”, but also with the “robot” AMT. Well, “our” 98-horsepower engine can only be combined with an automatic transmission, and only this version did without technical changes, except for the reconfigured electric power steering, which is installed on all Grants. Versions with “mechanics” and “robot” received an increased gear ratio of the main pair from 37:1 to 39:1, which made it possible to accelerate to “hundreds” about half a second faster. In addition, the modernized “robot” received increased traction and a “creeping mode”; when the brake pedal is released, the car begins to roll. An additional Sport mode has appeared, which is activated by a button on the front panel; gears change faster.

But on our test Grant with an automatic transmission everything is still the same. And I must say, it’s not bad, the transmission is well coordinated with the engine, in a measured driving mode there are no problems at all, the shifts are imperceptible and adequate. This is what the city needs. A taxi driver's dream! And only at an energetic pace, when pedaling to the floor, the engine begins to howl and the automatic transmission begins to twitch, but all this is within reasonable limits. On the highway, when overtaking trucks, the dynamics are not enough. Eh, fifth gear, or even sixth... Therefore, a car with an automatic transmission, alas, does not have a moderate appetite.

Steering? Not ideal, of course, there is not enough feedback and a clear zero. The amplifier tries too hard. But, in general, it will work, given the same budget class and urban priority of settings. There is a clear reaction force, the rolls in corners are large, but not frightening. Safe chassis setup with easy understeer. And, of course, Grant’s strong point is an omnivorous, energy-intensive suspension created not only for Russian roads, but also for destinations. What you need to rush along broken asphalt, dirt roads, gravel roads and just across the field. In the ability to do this in the best possible way, Granta has few rivals. And the driver feels confident, not expecting a hard blow every moment. Even on expensive 15-inch alloy wheels it’s comfortable, but on standard 14-inch “stamps” you won’t even notice potholes at all.

Now we have smoothly approached another innovation of the restyled Grant, and one of the most important, in my opinion. Sound insulation has really improved, the car has become noticeably quieter while driving, and this is due, among other things, to new fender liners made of fleecy material. It not only successfully reflects the impacts of pebbles on the arches, but also reduces the overall noise coming from the road and wheels.

Summarizing what has been said, we can state that almost all the changes benefited Grant, increasing the overall level of consumer qualities. Granta, of course, is far from ideal, but, in my opinion, it has its main properties, which are especially revered in the budget class - practicality, unpretentiousness and is still very inexpensive to maintain and operate. These are precisely those properties that are becoming rare among modern cars, like the vanishing values ​​of a bygone era.

The increase in price is quite moderate, the initial configuration is only 10 thousand rubles more expensive than the pre-restyling car - from 419,900. In richer trim levels the difference is, of course, more significant. And the most expensive Luxe version with automatic transmission costs RUB 608,800. A station wagon is 25 thousand more expensive than a sedan, and a hatchback or liftback is 15-17 thousand more expensive. By the way, the unification of the two model lines can have a positive impact on the statistics, and in terms of sales results, Grant is able to regain the leading position in the budget class, which is currently held by Kia Rio.

Unfortunately, the car did not receive any major changes inside. The new Lada Granta (hatchback) 2021 model year will be finished with the same hard plastic and simple fabrics, which are not the most pleasant to the touch and can create unnecessary noise in the cabin. The level of multimedia equipment greatly depends on the configuration. The database contains only simple audio preparation.

The dashboard still looks sloppy here. It takes up quite a lot of space, although it does not have an abundance of elements for controlling multimedia. At the very top of the dashboard there is a wide row of deflectors that take on a square shape. A little lower is either an audio system or a multimedia system monitor, depending on the configuration. Next, here you can find a panel with analog buttons and a panel filled with washers for adjusting the heater, air conditioner or climate control system.

There was little interesting in the tunnel either. Most of it is filled with various holes for things or glasses, taking various shapes. In addition, here you can find a gear shift knob, several buttons, a parking brake, and in a rich configuration, a simple armrest with a hinged lid is installed here, under which there is a glove box.

Everything checked under the new hood

The engine range has indeed remained unchanged. The new LADA Granta Hatchback can be purchased with 1.6-liter engines and a power of 87, 98 and 106 horses. The weakest engine is intended only for basic configurations and will only be paired with a manual transmission. Those who want to buy a car with a Jatco automatic transmission will have to be content with only 98 horses. Top Granta trim levels are equipped with a 106-horsepower engine; you can choose between a manual transmission and an AMT robot.
