Fuel pump VAZ 2110: device, signs of breakdown or wear, how to change it

Every motorist knows that his vehicle will be unable to work without the engine, which is the key element of the car and makes it move. And the engine will not work independently without fuel, and, accordingly, without the component that ensures its supply. This most important element is the fuel pump. It is necessary to ensure a constant supply of fuel to the engine, as well as to create sufficient power for the vehicle to operate.

During operation, VAZ 2110 car owners may encounter some difficulties associated with this element. Malfunctions of the VAZ 2110 injector fuel pump can be as follows: • failure of the element due to breakdown; • a dirty tank or low-quality gasoline with foreign inclusions that contaminate the pump filter. Owners of domestic vehicles can confidently say that, if necessary, you can find absolutely any part in auto parts stores, including the VAZ 2110 fuel pump. The main thing is to choose a product from a reliable and trusted manufacturer that has long established itself in the market. With proper use, high-quality fuel and timely maintenance, the product will serve you for more than one hundred thousand kilometers. There are main signs of a malfunction of the VAZ 2110 injector fuel pump, in which you should definitely take action to check this component: 1. Loud noise that the element has not previously emitted. 2. The vehicle refuses to gain speed and also does not move when engaging first or second gear. 3. The car moves jerkily and behaves strangely on the road. 4. Engine operation suddenly stopped.

Each of the VAZ 2110 fuel pump malfunctions must be carefully considered in order to understand what to do if you encounter them.

Where is the fuel pump located?

The fuel pump is one of the most important devices in a car, performing the functions of pumping fuel. It takes gasoline from the tank, then sends it through a pipeline to the filtration system and then to the combustion chambers.

Often, the car owner needs to replace or temporarily remove this device; its location depends on the car model and the type of fuel system. In the VAZ 2110 it is located under the hood, directly next to the engine, so detecting it does not cause any difficulties.

What kind of fuel pumps are installed on VAZ 2110/2112 cars

The fuel pump is considered the most important element of the fuel system of any car. So, depending on what type of engine the VAZ 2110/2112 model is equipped with, the choice of fuel pump will also depend. An electric pump is installed on injection cars, and a mechanical one on carburetor cars.

The family is equipped with fuel pumps produced by AvtoVAZ. However, these units do not have a high service life and reliability, so often car owners do not wait until the fuel pump fails and replace it.

Installed at the factory on every VAZ 2110/2112 model

Most often, fuel pumps (Russia) and “Bosch” (Germany) are chosen for replacement. Their quality and durability have been known for a long time, although their cost is several times higher than the price of AvtoVAZ gasoline pumps.

The German manufacturer ensures the quality and durability of the products

It’s worth mentioning separately about the location of the fuel pump in the VAZ 2110/2112: the device is not located under the hood. To achieve maximum optimization of the fuel pump, manufacturers install it directly into the fuel tank. That is, to get to the pump, you will need to fold back the cushion in the back seat of the car and open the hatch hidden under the carpet.

The fuel tank and fuel pump are located under the seat cushion.

Causes of malfunction

The main causes of malfunctions of the VAZ 2110 fuel pump are the low quality of the fuel being filled, low fuel supply pressure, the regular presence of a small amount of gasoline (less than 5 liters) in the fuel tank and improper operation when starting the engine - before starting the engine, you must wait after turning on the ignition 2-4 seconds to pump fuel into the engine power system.

It is also possible that the fuel pump as a part will naturally fail, depending on the mileage of 150 - 200 thousand km. or for a period of 4-5 years, but again this malfunction depends on the operating conditions of the car itself.

Usually the factory fuel pump is replaced with a BOSCH one.

There are secondary malfunctions of the VAZ 2110 fuel pump failure - failure of the relay, blown power fuse, they are located in the fuse mounting block either under the hood or in the lower left part of the dashboard, front console, depending on the engine modification, and contamination of the fine filter mesh fuel cleaning (located directly on the fuel pump).

These faults can be fixed relatively quickly and without large financial investments. Fuel pump repairs are performed quite rarely, and the cost of repairs relative to the cost of the pump is insignificant.

What is a fuel pump and how it works

The purpose of the fuel pump is to supply fuel to the car engine from the fuel tank. Since the engine and gas tank are located on opposite sides of each other, fuel supply is impossible without a gas pump.

There are two types of fuel pumps: mechanical and electric. A mechanical fuel pump can be found in a carburetor type car. Fuel must be supplied to the carburetor at low pressure. Electric fuel pumps are specially designed for fuel systems with injection type fuel supply (injectors).

The mechanical fuel pump is attached to the outside of the fuel tank, and the electric one is attached to the inside. Some engines have two fuel pumps at once: one of them operates at large volumes and at low pressure inside the fuel tank, and the other operates at small volumes and at high pressure, located near or on the engine.

Mechanical fuel pumps suck fuel from the tank into the engine. The distance between the pump and the carburetor is small. Thanks to this they can work under low pressure. The operating principle of electric fuel pumps is based on pushing fuel into the engine. The operation of such a pump is controlled by the vehicle's electronic system.

This control takes into account throttle position, fuel/air ratio and exhaust gas content. Electric fuel pumps heat up quickly and make a lot of noise due to the fact that they operate under pressure. Because of this, they are placed in the fuel tank as it muffles the noise and cools the pump.

The fuel pump is started by an electric motor. After turning the ignition switch to switch on, a signal is sent from the on-board computer to start the fuel pump. An electric charge enters the fuel pump. The engine rotates for several seconds, during which time the necessary pressure is created in the fuel system. If a signal is not sent to the on-board computer within two seconds, the fuel pump automatically turns off.

If an emergency shutdown does not occur, fuel enters the fuel pump through a tube and exits through a one-way valve. Next, it enters the fuel filter, which traps particles of debris and dirt, and only after that the purified fuel enters the engine. The fuel pump stops working simultaneously with the engine.

Pressure is the most important parameter for a fuel pump, affecting the amount of fuel injected into the engine. The gearbox is responsible for the stability of the fuel supply.

Model selection

It is best to install an imported fuel pump on the VAZ 2110 injector, capable of delivering a performance of up to 7 atm. It will not only last much longer, but will also ensure better and longer operation of the injector and improve the quality of the mixture at the outlet of the nozzle.

You should know that Bosch fuel pumps usually differ only in length, location of terminal connectors, and sometimes in the diameter of the housing. Therefore, it is advisable to either go shopping with an old device, or make some minor modifications at home.

Bosch fuel pump

To avoid buying a fake, keep in mind that any Bosch gas pump is packaged in very durable packaging. The bag contains purified gasoline in which the device is immersed. If you smell it, it means the seal is broken, corrosion may begin inside the pump, it’s better not to buy one.

Tips and tricks

If it is necessary to replace the VAZ 2110 pump or after removing the pump for preventative replacement/cleaning of the mesh, after completing the reassembly and installation of the pump, do not immediately install the rear sofa and the pump cover.

Additional verification will be required before doing this. To do this, you need to turn on the ignition and determine whether gasoline is leaking from the fuel pipes. Also, the smell of gasoline in the car interior, etc. is not allowed. If this is the case, then you need to determine the cause of the leak and replace the problematic elements, tighten the tube nuts, etc.

As for the fuel pump itself, the VAZ pump does not have to be replaced as a whole module. You can replace only the pump part, which will be cheaper. In this case, you only need to install the pump that came from the factory. You can also try to choose an analogue that matches the characteristics, but in the case of a VAZ, it is often optimal to use original parts.

To make the selection accurate, the existing module must be removed from the car and purchased a similar one. Also, when choosing, you need to take into account the type of engine, since the pumps are different. Before purchasing, the fuel pump itself should also be inspected, its housing should be checked (cracks, dents, and defects are not allowed).

How to check the performance of the fuel pump

Checking the condition of the fuel pump is carried out only in cases where certain signs of its malfunction are observed:

  • increased noise during pump operation;
  • the engine power has sharply decreased - the car cannot accelerate quickly;
  • The car does not start because no fuel is supplied to the engine unit.

You can determine that the cause of the malfunction lies in the fuel pump yourself. In addition, this does not require complex diagnostic equipment or special knowledge.

Initially, you need to check whether the pump itself is working. After the ignition is turned on, a slight buzzing noise should be heard under the rear seat cushion for a few seconds. If there is sound, it means the pump is working.

Pressure check

To check the pressure of the fuel pump, you will need a pressure gauge . It will need to be connected to the fuel system, which is located under the hood of the VAZ 2110/2112. A pressure gauge is connected to the fitting of the fuel pipe that goes to the engine. If at idle the device shows a pressure of more than 3.3 kg/cm3, then the fuel pump is clearly faulty.

When connecting, be careful not to damage nearby hoses and wires.

If the pressure gauge reading is less than 2.3 kgcm, then the problem in the fuel system lies not in the pump, but in another element - the filter.

Based on these indicators, you can immediately identify the nature of the problems in the fuel system

What to do if the pump does not pump fuel

In some cases, the problem lies in the fact that the fuel pump does not turn on. Accordingly, it will not provide gasoline to the power unit, and the car simply will not start.

Checking the functionality of the pump is as follows:

  • recline the rear seat in the cabin;
  • remove the hatch cover;
  • turn the starter on to crank, but do not start the car;
  • Connect a tester to the contacts of the fuel pump - if power is supplied, but the fuel pump does not pump, therefore, the device itself has failed;
  • if there is no power supply, the problem lies in the relay, fuse or wiring.

The easiest way to check the health of the relay and fuse is to replace them with new ones. If the fuel pump still does not work, there is a short circuit in the wiring.

Based on the diagram, you can identify the location of the malfunction

How to check and replace the fuel pump relay

If the electric fuel pump does not show signs of life when the ignition is turned on, this does not mean that it has burned out. The cause of the breakdown may also be the “relay”. The simplest method of checking the fuel pump relay is by ear - it should click when the ignition is turned on. If you don’t hear a click, then most likely the relay is faulty.

However, everything is not so simple - the breakdown can be “tricky”, for example, the car does not start the first time. The cause of the breakdown may be burnt relay contacts.

In this case, checking the functionality of the pump is very simple:

  1. Remove the protective cover that hides the fuse and relay block.
  2. Unscrew the fastenings of the block and remove it; it will remain attached to the wires.
  3. Pull the relay out of the block and place a jumper between 2 opposite contacts, so we will supply power directly to the fuel pump.
  4. If the electric motor of the fuel pump begins to make noise with this connection, it means that most likely the fuel pump itself is working, and the fault lies in the relay. In this case, replace the relay.

Fuel pump diagnostics

If the gas tank is full, the battery is in good condition, the spark plugs are dry and give a spark, and the starter rotates the engine, then the reason is the fuel pump. The most common reason is that after turning on the ignition, there is no power supplied to the fuel pump. In the same way, it manifests itself when the car is moving, when the power is lost and the engine begins to stall. Another important nuance is the supply of the required amount of fuel.

The pump may be working, producing a hum and buzzing, that is, power is supplied, but not producing the required pressure.

The pressure in the fuel system with a working fuel pump is considered normal to be more than 3 bar. This pressure is collected in the fuel rail and corresponds to a value of 300 kPa. To check the condition, you need to take a pressure gauge and measure the pressure in the fuel rail, taking into account those indicators that are considered normal for each individual model.

For a VAZ-2110 with an injector, the pressure at the moment the ignition is turned on should show no less than three atmospheres, at idle speed - 2.5, and when the gas pedal is pressed - from 2.5 to 3 atmospheres. This method allows you to accurately determine:

  1. Failure of the rail pressure regulator.
  2. Fuel pump malfunction or decreased performance due to wear.
  3. Severe contamination of the filter or mesh.

A decrease in pressure leads to the fact that the engine does not start or starts with difficulty, it begins to stall, and dips appear during operation. If the pump is to blame, then the fuel pump coarse strainer may be clogged. In this situation, there is no need to change the entire unit; you can clean the mesh or install a new one. If you suspect that the fuel pump is not receiving power, you need to turn on the ignition and listen. A slight buzzing or hum should be heard when the fuel pump is operating. And if you don’t hear anything, then there is a problem with the operation of the fuel pump or the wiring to it.

The main list of reasons why the fuel pump on a VAZ-2110 car does not pump includes:

  • fuse malfunction;
  • non-working relay;
  • motor failure;
  • oxidation of contacts in the wiring leading to the fuel pump;
  • fuel pump failure.

Wiring

On almost all car models, the wiring to the fuel pump consists of three wires: “positive”, “negative” and a wire for determining the amount of fuel in the tank. If the fuel pump stops pumping, the wiring may be damaged. You can check the power using a 12 W lamp, powering it from the external connector of the fuel pump. When the ignition is turned on, the light should light up. If not, then the external circuit is broken somewhere.

To check the external wiring, you need to connect in turn the “positive” and “negative” contacts removed from the fuel pump power connector. It is necessary to close the “negative” contact to ground, after which the light will light up when the ignition is turned on. So, it can be determined that the contact is inoperative. If the lamp does not light up, then the “positive” contact is damaged. Placing a contact on the relay in which the light does not light up, there may be a problem with the wiring in the section from the relay to the fuel pump.

Electric motor

If searching for a problem in the fuel rail and wiring does not produce results, you need to check the fuel pump motor. It is responsible for circulating fluid in the internal part of the fuel pump. When checking, it is necessary to take into account that after a certain period of time the terminals on the fuel pump may oxidize and there will be no power. This is also often the reason why the fuel pump stops working. This means that the motor is most likely working, but the terminals need to be cleaned and tightened.

Ground contact

Problems with the fuel pump ground can be indicated by an incorrectly indicating fuel level sensor. Poorly secured ground can cause the fuel pump to stop pumping fuel. The ground wire is located under the dashboard and runs through the entire interior of the car. You need to find it, clean the contacts and secure it properly to the fuel pump.

Models of fuel pumps for VAZ 2114/2115 cars

VAZ 2114/2115 cars are equipped with 1.5 cm 3 and 1.6 cm 3 gasoline engines with a distributed injection system. A submersible electric fuel pump is used to supply fuel. It is part of the fuel module installed at the top of the gas tank (under the rear seat). In addition to the pump, the module includes a fuel accumulator (cup), a coarse filter and a fuel level sensor with a float.

To supply fuel in VAZ 2114/2115 cars, a submersible electric fuel pump is used

The VAZ 2114/2115 fuel pump is a conventional DC electric motor in a sealed housing with a one-way valve at the outlet. An impeller of a special shape is located on the electric motor shaft. Its rotation ensures the fuel supply.

The fuel module includes a fuel pump, a fuel accumulator, a coarse filter and a fuel level sensor

The fuel pump is powered from the vehicle's on-board network. The electrical circuit of the pump, protected by a fuse, is closed using a separate relay.

Electric fuel pumps for VAZ cars are produced by both domestic (Utes, SAAZ, Pekar) and foreign companies. The latest modifications of the VAZ 2114/2115 are equipped with BOSH pumps, which are distinguished by their high reliability, long service life and relatively low price.

Design of the electric fuel pump VAZ 2114/2115

Catalog numbers of standard fuel pumps for VAZ 2114/2115:

  • 2112–1139009–12 - for engines with a volume of 1.5 cm 3;
  • 2112–1139009–01 - for engines with a volume of 1.6 cm 3;
  • 580453453 (BOSH) - for engines with a volume of 1.5 and 1.6 cm 3.

These models differ in operating pressure. The former are capable of creating a pressure of 2.8–3.2 kPa in the fuel system, the latter - 3.7–3.9 kPa. BOSH fuel pumps are rated at 3.5 kPa.

Installing a new

Installation of a new electric fuel pump is carried out in the reverse order.

The following actions are performed sequentially:

  1. The seal is installed.
  2. The new pump is carefully inserted.
  3. The pressure ring is installed and 8 fastening bolts are tightened.
  4. The fuel lines are screwed on.
  5. The power supply is connected to the connector.
  6. The hatch cover is installed and closed with the folded carpet flap.
  7. The rear seat cushion is installed.
  8. The battery terminals are connected.

When installing, remember that the arrow stamped on the housing must be directed backwards.

Replacing the fuel pump on a VAZ 2110/2112 with your own hands

If the car owner has accurately diagnosed the failure of the pump mechanism in the fuel system, it will need to be replaced. It is worth noting that replacing the fuel pump on VAZ 2110/2112 cars is quite simple; even an inexperienced driver can cope with this task.

The fuel pump is usually replaced not only because it has lost its functionality, but also in other cases:

  • incorrect pressure readings when the pump is working;
  • insufficient fuel capacity;
  • after purchasing a new VAZ in order to get rid of the “weak points” of the model.

To work you will need a small set of tools:

  • flat screwdriver;
  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • scissors;
  • 10mm socket wrench.

The work procedure can be divided into two stages: dismantling the old device and installing a new one.

Tools

The set of tools for replacing a fuel pump is small, but should be on hand so that during the repair process you don’t have to run around and look for a suitable wrench or screwdriver.

When dismantling and installing a new fuel pump you will need:

  • a wrench for loosening the terminals on the battery, the size depends on the installed fasteners;
  • flathead and Phillips screwdrivers;
  • key to 17;
  • tubular wrench or deep socket 7 with ratchet or wrench.

Having prepared the tool and a new part, you can begin metalwork.

Removing the old fuel pump

The procedure for dismantling the VAZ ten electric fuel pump is standard for the entire family of the series.

Step by step steps to eliminate the faulty part:

  1. The terminal on the battery is disconnected.
  2. The pressure in the fuel system is checked and, if necessary, released through a special valve on the ramp, covered with a protective cap.
  3. The rear seat cushion is removed and the trimmed part of the carpet is moved away.
  4. The hatch cover is retracted to the side. To do this, unscrew two mounting screws.
  5. The power supply is disconnected by separating the wire block from the connector.
  6. The fuel line clamp is loosened or removed.
  7. Use a key to unscrew the two lines from the fuel pump.
  8. The gaskets at the ends of the fuel lines must be replaced.
  9. The 8 fastening bolts are unscrewed.
  10. The pressure ring is removed and the fuel pump housing is carefully pulled out.
  11. The seal is removed and inspected. If necessary, it is replaced.

Particular attention should be paid to compliance with safety regulations, including fire safety.

Installation instructions for fuel pump

  1. A new pump is inserted into the vacated socket. In this case, the arrow on the body should point towards the rear of the car - this is the only way to ensure the correct position of the device.
  2. After which the pump is screwed back to the tank with the same eight bolts.
  3. Next you will need to connect the two fuel pipes to each other.
  4. A connector is connected to the pump contact.
  5. The final stage is installing the hatch cover and returning the rear seat cushion to its original place.

The procedure will take no more than 7–8 minutes.

Thus, the owner of cars of the “tenth” VAZ family can independently cope with such work as checking and replacing the fuel pump. It must be said that the fuel pump is indeed considered one of the most vulnerable points on the VAZ 2110/2112, so owners better be prepared in advance to carry out the necessary procedures with this device.

Mechanical fuel pump repair

The functionality of a mechanical fuel pump can be restored by replacing its faulty elements. You can buy them at any automobile store. But it is better to buy not individual spare parts, but a repair kit. It includes all the elements that can fail:

  • intake and exhaust valves;
  • diaphragms with spacers, “plates”, rod;
  • pusher;
  • thermal spacer;
  • gaskets

Replacing valves

To replace the pump valves you will need a slotted impact driver and a small hammer. The valves are held in their seats by punching at three points. These areas must be carefully knocked off with a screwdriver. After this, the valves can be removed. Having installed the new parts, we secure them with cores. To do this, place the tip of the screwdriver on the edge of the housing along the circumference of the socket and strike it lightly with a hammer. We fix each valve in three places.

Replacing valves

How to change apertures

To replace the diaphragms, you need to unscrew the nut by 10 in the upper part of the rod. Next, we remove the damaged elements, and in their place we install parts from the repair kit.

The kit includes three diaphragms: two working and one safety. The latter serves to prevent unauthorized fuel from entering the carburetor if the first two are damaged. It is installed at the very bottom of the rod immediately after the lower “plate”. We place spacers on top of it on the rod: first a small one, then a large one. We place the working membranes and the upper “plate” on them. We secure the resulting structure with a nut.

The mechanical fuel pump has 3 diaphragms

Replacing the pusher, thermal spacer and gaskets

The thermal spacer does not need to be replaced unless it is damaged. Inspect its mating surfaces, especially the outer one, to which the lower part of the pump housing is attached. It should be perfectly smooth. Otherwise, oil leakage may occur at the junction of parts during engine operation.

Replacing the pusher is carried out by removing the old one and installing a new rod in its place. There is no difference in which end where it will be installed.

Now about the gaskets. There are only three of them in the repair kit, and they have different thicknesses:

  • “A” – 02.27–03 mm;
  • “B” – 0.7–0.8 mm;
  • “C” – 1.1–1.3 mm.

The first is intended for installation between the thermal spacer and the auxiliary drive housing, and the gaskets “B” and “C” are used to adjust the protrusion of the pusher above its mating surface.

The adjustment is made as follows:

  1. We install the thermal spacer with the first gasket and a new rod into the auxiliary drive housing.
  2. Place gasket “B” on the mating plane of the spacer. Next, you need to rotate the engine crankshaft to the position of the pusher until it is recessed as much as possible. This can be done using a large slotted screwdriver. We insert its end into the clutch housing window and slowly push the flywheel clockwise.
  3. We periodically check the position of the pusher and measure its protrusion. When it enters the auxiliary drive housing to its maximum length, we measure how much it protrudes above the mating plane of the spacer with the gasket already installed on it. This value should be 0.8–1.3 mm. If it is larger, replace gasket “B” with gasket “C”. If the protrusion length is less than specified, swap gaskets “A” and “B”.

After the adjustment is completed, the fuel pump is installed in place and secured with nuts.

Where is the fuse and fuel pump relay on the VAZ 2110

It’s worth saying right away that the fuse and relay for the VAZ 2110 injector fuel pump are located in the same place. They are both located in the center console on the passenger side below. The main task of a relay in an electrical circuit is to close and open a circuit. Thanks to this, the circuit is protected from high inrush current.

An example of the operation of a similar starter relay: when starting the engine, the starter current 29.3708 (423.3708) can reach 80 - 300 Amperes. Without a relay, some of the elements of this circuit could burn out.

A similar type of relay is installed on the fuel pump, protecting the circuit when the engine starts. It consists of a plastic housing that houses an electromagnetic coil with a core. The incoming voltage allows the core contacts to close. The operating current of the relay is 30 Amperes.

Where is the fuel pump relay located on a VAZ 2110?

People often wonder where the fuel pump relay is located on a VAZ 2110; this photo will help you answer this question ↓

Where is the fuel pump relay located on a VAZ 2110?

Location of the relay and fuse for the fuel pump VAZ 2110 injector

If during repairs or diagnostics, the fault indicates a relay and fuse, then they must be removed and replaced with new parts. You should prepare a Phillips screwdriver and position yourself on the passenger side. At the bottom of the center console there is a cover secured with two screws. You need to unscrew them. It is there that the panel is located where the VAZ 2110 injector fuel pump relay is located and where the fuse for the VAZ 2110 fuel pump is located.

Rice. 2 Removing the side cover

After removing the protective cover, access to the power fuses and relays of the car appears. The required parts responsible for the operation of the fuel pump are marked with numbers 5 and 2 in the center of the photograph.

Fig.3 Power fuses and relays

For reference! On some vehicles, the relay and fuse may be in a different order. But that rarely happens.

Why does the VAZ 2110 fuel pump fuse blow out?

Fuse failure is a fairly common occurrence. Burnout indicates one thing - there is a short circuit in the fuel pump power system. In this case, you can change the fuse, drive away for several days without problems, and the situation will repeat again. So it is necessary to look for the reason.

The most common culprits are:

  • the wiring harness above the exhaust manifold melted;
  • wires under the carpet are damaged or melted;
  • interturn short circuit in the pump motor;
  • The positive wire going to the pump is damaged (current leakage to ground).

To identify the cause, you should disconnect the power supply from the fuel pump and turn on the ignition. If the fuse is blown, then the problem is in the wiring. Remained intact - short circuit in the electric motor. In the first case, you have to inspect the entire harness, looking for contact of the “plus” with the ground. As a rule, this is a gray wire running from the relay to the tank. The harness runs along the central tunnel, and not from the left threshold.

Why does the fuel pump turn off after warming up the engine on a VAZ 2114

There is a problem, I don’t understand what’s wrong! The engine starts and runs normally, without any complaints. When the engine warms up, after a while the fuel pump turns off and does not respond to the ignition. It sits for 15-20 minutes and starts working again. What is the problem?

It is impossible to say exactly what the problem is that the fuel pump on the VAZ 2114 turns off after the engine warms up due to insufficient description, and yet we will consider options for what could cause this to happen.

The reasons for this can be divided into two parts - mechanical and electrical. Moreover, often one part can become a consequence of the second.

One of the simplest malfunctions that can give this result is a clogged fuel tank ventilation system. The tank lid is not airtight; it has drainage holes through which air passes. Everything is very simple here - air is needed so that a vacuum is not created in the tank as fuel is consumed. If the drainage holes are clogged, as the vacuum in the tank increases due to insufficient air supply, it will be more difficult for the pump to pump fuel into the system. This leads to an increase in the load on it and on the relay for its activation. When the critical load is reached, the relay simply turns off the pump.

And now how everything happens on a car: while the car is standing, air still penetrates the tank and the pressure in it equalizes. After starting the engine, the fuel pump actively pumps fuel, and since air does not flow in the required quantity, a vacuum appears. As the engine warms up, the vacuum increases and the load on the fuel pump and relay increases. To prevent the pump from failing at “one fine moment,” the relay turns off the power to the circuit.

Once you stand for 15-20 minutes, air enters the tank again, equalizing the pressure, and the whole cycle begins again.

A clogged fuel inlet grid of the fuel pump can give approximately the same result. But here everything happens not because of a lack of air, but because the pump needs to supply a certain amount of fuel, and it is very difficult to do this through a clogged mesh. It starts to work under load and the relay turns off the power after a while. This can also happen due to a clogged fuel filter.

There may also be problems with the fuel pump itself. Burnt wires connecting to it, insufficient weight, wear or damage to the electric motor creates an increased load on the fuel pump relay, which causes it to operate after a certain time.

After the engine stalls, you must immediately find its relay and check its temperature with your hand. If the element is very hot, then this is a signal that the entire circuit is working under heavy load. But what causes the heating still needs to be determined.

It is located on the VAZ 2114 on the passenger side, under the side decorative panel of the center console. There are three relays and fuses for them. The fuel pump relay is installed in the middle.

When checking the temperature, you should immediately evaluate the condition of the fuse, as well as the contact of the relay itself in the seat. By the way, this element can also fail, causing its operation to be incorrect. It’s easy to check its functionality; just close its contacts immediately after the engine stops. If the fuel pump starts to work, the relay must be replaced.

If everything is in order with this element, and a malfunction appears, then the cause should be sought in the components of the fuel system. The pump performance and filter throughput are checked. Indeed, due to excessive load on the pump due to a malfunction, clogged filter, fuel inlet mesh or tank ventilation system, the relay will turn off the pump after a certain time to prevent burnout.

Another item to check is the crankshaft position sensor. Initially, it may seem that the DPKV has nothing to do with the fuel supply system, but this is not so. Indeed, based on the readings of this element, the electronic unit controls the power system and the fuel supply circuit too. If the wiring to the sensor is not operating correctly or is damaged, the unit may turn off the power to the pump at certain moments.

In general, when searching for the cause, you should start from the relay and fuse, and then check both the mechanical and electrical components of the circuit of the fuel supply elements.

BOSCH fuel pump VAZ 2110 – pros and cons

Among manufacturers of automotive electrical equipment, the most reputable is BOSCH. The combination of affordable prices and good quality allowed this brand to conquer the shelves in every auto goods store. However, counterfeit manufacturers do not sleep and have flooded the market with their products of worse quality.

How to choose a Bosch fuel pump of original quality for a VAZ 2110

Despite the high-tech equipment of factories with counterfeit activities, it is possible for the buyer to identify original products from counterfeits. This guarantees the car owner that the service life declared by the manufacturer for the Bosch fuel pump for the VAZ 2110 will be observed.

A fake is identified by the following criteria:

  • the corners on the packaging stickers are sharp, not oval like on the original;
  • typos and errors in the text of the accompanying documentation;
  • the pump is packed in a vacuum plastic bag without oil;
  • the date of manufacture and shift number may be poorly printed on the case or missing.

Helpful information! The price difference between the original and the replica can be 2-3 times the cost. As a result, “enterprising” sellers can replace the original with a fake, because it is impossible to visually distinguish spare parts without knowledge.

Bosch fuel pump performance and characteristics

The manufacturer BOSCH produces a pump for each fuel system with certain pressure parameters. It is not necessary that the pressure strictly correspond to the performance characteristics. The main thing is that it should not be less, otherwise it will not be enough for the normal operation of the fuel system. As for the excessive pressure, in this case the return line helps out by returning the fuel to the tank.

For example, if there was a fuel pump from a VAZ 2110 (3.5 bar), then installing an analogue with parameters of 4.0 bar will not make things worse, but vice versa. Fuel economy may increase, since the spraying in the ramp will be of better quality.

If you are going to repair a VAZ 2110 fuel pump (injector) yourself, then you should purchase an electric motor with number 0580453453. In addition to the Togliatti family, a part with this code is installed on some RENAULT models.

Many car owners of the “tenth” family do not have the desire to immediately purchase a Bosch fuel pump for their VAZ 2110 (8-valve injector), since its cost of over 2,500 rubles significantly impacts the personal budget. However, having experienced failure after installing a fake, you can hear an objective assessment from the first person, which has its pros and cons.

Turning to the site with reviews, it turned out that many attribute such a disadvantage as a high degree of fakes. But this is hardly worth adding to the cons section.

Fuel pump VAZ-2110: characteristics

The fuel pump (VAZ-2110) is the main structural element of the fuel system of a gasoline internal combustion engine, which functions to supply fuel to the injectors or carburetor under high pressure. Depending on the type of drive, there are electronic and mechanical units. And now we will look at the structure of this part using the example of an element installed on a VAZ 10-ku.

Mechanical fuel pump VAZ-2110 - properties and design

This type of mechanism is used only on cars with carburetor engines. This VAZ-2110 fuel pump has its own mechanical drive from the camshaft, and it is located on the internal combustion engine.

According to its design, this element is one of the types of piston and contains the following parts:

  1. 2-piece housing with a lid on top.
  2. Diaphragm. It is installed between the lower and upper parts of the body.
  3. Return spring.
  4. Stock. It connects aggressively to the diaphragm.
  5. Discharge and absorption valve. It is located in the upper part of the pump.
  6. Mechanical drive.
  7. Mesh filter.

The drive of this device, as we said earlier, is carried out from the camshaft eccentric. When this element rotates, the part moves the rod with the diaphragm down, and the spring force is overcome. The volume of space above it increases, and gasoline, due to the resulting vacuum, seeps into the pump through a separate valve from the gas tank. The discharge valve is still closed.

The main operating mechanism of the pump is the diaphragm. It consists of two membranes, between each of which there is its own gasket. The diaphragm is connected to the rod. The latter interacts with the mechanical drive parts. There are various pump drive schemes. For example, on Russian “10s” a design is used that consists of a pusher and a lever with a balancer. On imported cars, they use their own design with a two-arm “rocker arm”.

Fuel pump for VAZ-2110 - properties

The main properties of this device are the pressure level and housing dimensions. The most popular units today are German-made Bosch units. The pressure of the VAZ-2110 fuel pump is about 2.8-3.8 Bar. The very feature of the fuel pump is sometimes determined by the diameter of the body; in most cases, it is the length.

The dimensions of this part can be very different. Depending on the model and brand of the manufacturer, this parameter is 65, 90 or 105 mm. And these are not all the sizes of VAZ fuel pumps.

Apart from the length, these devices differ in the location of the terminal chips. The mesh itself, in terms of its seats, actually does not differ by brand. By the way, the quality of operation when the fuel level in the tank is low depends on the length of the gasoline pump itself.

In other words, when choosing, you need to pay attention to longer elements. By the way, the diameter of the body can be varied using a gasket made of gas-resistant rubber

Electronic analogues

What is special about the fuel pump? The VAZ-2110 (injector) is equipped with specifically such devices in the fuel system. The electronic pump is used on gasoline engines with distributed fuel injection. In turbodiesel and diesel engines, this element is used in the low-pressure circuit for the preparatory passage of fuel to the high-pressure pump. By the way, electronic pumps on gasoline engines with direct injection of Common Rail fuel operate on the same principle. The electronic mechanism makes the pressure about 0.3 MPa (in power plants with direct injection - about 0.7 MPa). The use of mechanical pumps in such systems is not recommended due to the low pressure when supplying gasoline.

Where is he located?

This device is located in the fuel line or in the fuel tank. Thanks to this placement, the risk of losses is significantly reduced due to the absence of absorbing mains.

The design of the electronic pump implies the presence of the following parts:

  1. Electric motor.
  2. Pump housed in an iron casing.

In other words, this device consists of an electric drive and a pump part. All its components are in direct contact with the fuel. In addition to the parts listed above, the module of this device also includes a fuel flow sensor, a fuel intake and a strainer.

And the part we are considering operates thanks to the presence of two valves - a reversible valve and a pressure reducing valve. The first one locks the system when the internal combustion engine stops. The second one performs the function of maintaining pressure in the system, while part of the fuel is bypassed to the rear inlet.

By design, there are a number of types of electric pumps:

Frequent breakdowns

A fuel pump malfunction can be caused by: poor quality fuel, clogged fuel filter, simple emptying of the gas tank, or how intensively the vehicle is used. Mechanical damage to internal components due to wear or poor quality of workmanship and materials cannot be ruled out.

Helping the fuel pump last longer is within the capabilities of any car enthusiast who follows a number of rules:

  • refuel with high-quality fuel at proven gas stations;
  • change the fuel filter in a timely manner;
  • periodically clean the gas tank from accumulated impurities;
  • Make sure that the fuel level in the tank is sufficient for the system to operate.

The last point is due to the fact that running the pump idle will lead to overheating and failure.

Signs of fuel pump wear

A faulty fuel pump either works intermittently, that is, incorrectly, or does not function at all. Problems may occur due to severe wear or failure of other system elements.

Signs of a fuel pump malfunction that require checking its functionality are:

  • engine failure to start;
  • uneven operation of the power unit, it stalls and loses power;
  • extraneous noises in the operation of the fuel pump or their complete absence.

Without diagnostics, it will not be possible to determine the nature of the malfunction, and during the test you must always move from the simplest to the most complex.
