The Niva car, the interior dimensions of which can accommodate up to five people, is not a high-speed vehicle. Its characteristics are designed to overcome off-road conditions. This ability is provided by increased ground clearance, independent front suspension with wishbones, and a stabilizer bar. The rear suspension element is of a dependent type with a longitudinal and transverse linkage device.
With the advent of the VAZ-21213 model, developers began to pay more attention to car safety requirements. It began to be equipped with a diagonal brake circuit with an installed automatic locking system. The steering wheel has a hydraulic booster. It is worth noting that the Niva car (the dimensions of the new model have not changed) continues to be produced. At the same time, all the main components and parts are improved.

The five-door Niva, the production of which was established at the Experimental Industrial Production of the Scientific and Technical Center VAZ in 1995.
It differs from the conveyor 21213 in its wheelbase increased by 500 millimeters and the same length. These changes made it possible to comfortably accommodate 5 people in the car and a spacious trunk, close in volume to the “tenth”.
Unfortunately, due to the fact that the car turned out to be heavy, a trailer is contraindicated for it.
Later, with the development of production of 1.8-liter engines in the OPP, a modification of the “five-door” with such an engine appeared. It can be distinguished by the index 21312.
Our domestic auto industry has recently become very pleased with the release of new VAZ models. But there is one example that is still worth being proud of - the VAZ 2131 Niva. A representative of 4X4 class cars, which, after decades, remains on the pedestal, even among foreign, modern competitors.
Its technical characteristics and driving performance are at a sufficient level to compete with off-road vehicles produced in 2005 - 2010. Let's take a closer look at what the Lada 2131 is.
Let's sum it up
So, we looked at what the all-wheel drive five-door Niva is. Among the positive aspects of the car it is worth emphasizing:
- Simplicity of design (accordingly, it can be repaired in most cases without the help of mechanics).
- Patency. Already in the basic configuration there is a locking and reduction gear.
- Spacious interior (compared to the short-wheelbase version).
- Soft suspension.
But this car also has disadvantages. Among them it is necessary to highlight:
- Weak motors.
- High fuel consumption.
- Body prone to corrosion.
- Poor sound insulation.
- Poor directional stability.
Who is this car suitable for? Niva is a good choice for those who need a simple and cheap all-wheel drive SUV for off-pavement driving. It is for such purposes that in most cases it is purchased. There is no point in buying a car and using it purely in the city. In summer it is hot, it is clumsy, and it eats a lot of fuel. For the city, it is better to choose something from the front-wheel drive VAZ family (for example, the “ten”, which will be cheaper to operate and more maneuverable in the city).
Options and their characteristics
In total, the Auto VAZ plant produced only 3 modifications for this Niva model - 2131 1.7; 1.7i and 1.8. In appearance they are completely identical, but their characteristics differ.
Model 2131 1.7 - has a four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1691, developing a maximum power of 79 hp. The compression ratio of each cylinder is 9.3, and the diameter is 83 mm. The working stroke is 80 mm. The recommended type of gasoline is AI-92. Engine type: carburetor.
As for the gearbox, each Niva 2131 has a 5-speed manual. Acceleration to 100 km/h is in 25 seconds, and the maximum speed is 135 km/h.
The characteristics of the VAZ 2131 1.7i are not much different from the previous modification. Engine capacity – 1691, number of cylinders – 4, compression ratio and stroke – 9.3 and 80 mm. respectively. Power is slightly increased - 80 hp, instead of 79.
The difference in the engine design that influenced its technical characteristics is the fuel supply system. Instead of a carburetor, the Lada 2131 Niva has a distributed injection system, which allows the engine to behave a little faster and react more quickly to fuel entering the cylinder. Recommended fuel is AI-95. The maximum speed that the car can reach is 135 km/h.
How to turn off the DRL on a Lada without interfering with the wiring

On LADA cars, daytime running lights light up automatically after the engine is started. In some situations, there is no need for DRLs to operate (for example, during auto start at night). Did you know that in some cases you can disable the DRLs in a simple way, without interfering with the car’s electrical wiring?
To disable the DRL on LADA cars (Granta, Kalina and Priora), in which the light is controlled using the MUS (lighting control module), you should set the block knob to the middle position between the “circle” and “dimensions”.
To turn off the DRL on LADA cars (XRAY, Vesta and Largus), in which the light is controlled using the left steering column switch, you should similarly set the position of the regulator to an intermediate position (photo No. 3).

It is worth noting that this method will not work in some car configurations, for example, on the Lada Vesta in the Luxe trim level, which uses an additional body electronics unit.

We reviewed the performance qualities and characteristics of the VAZ 2131. Let's now move on to the appearance, namely dimensions, ground clearance, load capacity, etc.
Lada 4X4 “Niva” is a five-seater station wagon that has a rather considerable width and length: 1680 mm and 4240 mm, respectively. The height of the SUV is 1640 mm. The wheelbase is slightly larger in size than the width of the car itself, which increases its stability.
Since this VAZ model has a 4X4 category, its ground clearance is completely suitable for off-road driving - 228 mm. The car can overcome significant bumps and irregularities without getting caught in the bottom of the body, thereby preventing the owner from unnecessary repair costs.
The Niva’s trunk volume can accommodate 420 liters, and with the rear seats removed – 780. The maximum load capacity with this volume is 500 kg. The car itself weighs 1350 kg.

The Niva, like an SUV, is adapted for off-road driving; as a rule, the Niva is used when going fishing or hunting and overcoming various potholes and mountains. The Russian SUV has a low height, which allows it to overcome large slopes without any consequences.

The most successful car of the Volga Automobile Plant was born as a result of a departmental incident. The designers were preparing a small city car to support the “classic” passenger models. When a significant part of the work was completed, an order came “from above” - we needed an SUV, not a small car. It is clear for whom it was intended: just pay attention to the name of the new car - “Niva”. Rural administrations, collective farm chairmen and agronomists needed a car that was cheaper and more economical than the good old “goat”.

It was decided not to start a new project, but to convert a small car into an all-terrain vehicle - that’s why the Niva has such a compact monocoque body, a neat “passenger” design and an independent front suspension. Components of other cars were widely used, primarily the VAZ-2106. The rear optics and the main interior elements were borrowed from this model, and the VAZ-2121 engine is a modification of the VAZ-2106 engine. As a result, the Niva turned out to be very short, light and extremely comfortable for a jeep, with a seating position for passengers, dynamic qualities and a soft ride, like a passenger car. Off-road performance turned out to be not just good, but outstanding. With its low weight, the Niva passed where heavier “classic” SUVs bogged down along the axle, regardless of ground clearance. Short overhangs and base also provided it with good geometric maneuverability. In fact, the Niva is the world's first comfortable small-class SUV with a monocoque body and permanent all-wheel drive.
For these reasons, the VAZ-2121 car became the most popular export model of the Togliatti automobile plant, the only car that was supplied even to Japan, as well as the most original and popular Soviet exported car. Until now, in many countries of the world (including those where there was no official export) there are Niva fan clubs. The strength of the off-road body made this car the basis for numerous variants produced not only by VAZ and its subsidiaries, but also by other workshops and studios, including abroad (these variants were often called Cossack - Cossack, English). These include tracked snow and swamp-going vehicles, pickups and vans, and special vehicles. It is simply impossible not only to list, but even to track all possible options. In addition to the basic one, the most popular variants are the 5-door extended station wagon VAZ-2131, the Wolf and Bison pickups. In the 1980s The Volzhsky Automobile Plant began preparing the second generation Niva. Ultimately, this car turned into the Chevrolet Niva: VAZ transferred all rights to this car to Chevrolet, including the name “Niva”.
However, the new car turned out to be much more expensive and more complex, so the demand for the first generation Niva did not decrease. VAZ-2121 continues to be produced in Togliatti under the name Lada 4x4. It is curious that car enthusiasts not only have not come up with any “folk” nicknames for the car over the years, but even now continue to stubbornly call it “Niva”. Having updated the engines, VAZ adapted the model to Euro-3 and Euro-4 environmental standards. Only an attempt to meet more stringent security requirements ended in failure. In the Euro NCAP rating, Lada 4x4 earned 0 stars out of a maximum of 5, so it is no longer supplied to developed countries.
A little history of Lada Niva II
For the first time, the concert version of the compact SUV, then known as the VAZ-2123, was shown at the Moscow Auto Show in 1998. According to the creators, it was supposed to become a successor to the Niva VAZ-2121, which by that time had been produced virtually unchanged for 22 years.
This all-terrain vehicle began to be produced in small batches by the Volzhsky Automobile Plant in 2001, but then the company did not have enough funds, and the rights to the Niva brand were sold to the world-famous automobile concern General Motors.
Serial production of the model under the new brand started in September 2002, and what is noteworthy is that it was from that moment that the name Chevrolet became well known in the Russian market, and the Chevrolet Niva gained particular popularity in the Russian Federation.
In March 2009, GM-AvtoVAZ updated the small SUV, assigning the factory index VAZ-212300-55 to the restyled version.
At the end of 2021, GM withdrew from the joint venture, selling its half share to AvtoVAZ.
From that moment on, the Volzhsky Automobile Plant regained the right to produce this model as the Niva, adding the word Travel to its name, which means “travel” in English.
Moreover, the car, which received the factory index 212300-80, not only changed its name, but also underwent another restyling with a fairly significant modernization in the exterior.

Even not very long and not particularly long trips showed that it is, in principle, possible to sleep in my Niva, unfolding the rear sofa, emptying the contents of the trunk, and placing all sorts of “soft crap” on the floor. But the procedure of rearranging things, especially when it is repeated many times (and it is repeated at least twice), is annoying, to put it mildly. It’s quite easy for me to find accommodation for the night alone, but when there are three of us (me, my wife and child) things become more complicated. In the summer, our algorithm for preparing for an overnight stay looked like this: — we take out all the contents of the luggage compartment and the rear of the cabin from the car; — unfold the rear sofa, remove the sofa cushion; — lay rugs and blankets on the floor; — fully recline the driver’s seat; — we partially return things to the cabin (in free spaces), partially hide them under the car; — my wife and child sleep in the back, I sleep on the unfolded driver’s seat. Preparing for departure means doing everything listed in reverse order.
I decided to make a so-called “sleeping bag”. It seems to me that the term “folding bed” is more suitable here, but this is not important. The very solution of a “telescopic”, sliding frame structure has already been implemented many times on “large cars” (Landcruisers, Patrols, Patriots, etc.). I haven’t seen such designs for Niva (maybe I didn’t look well). There were some options, but I didn’t really like them.
Characteristics of my sleeping “system”: 1). Main materials: square pipe 20x1.5; sq. pipe 25x1.5; plywood-8mm; foamed polyethylene -20 mm; “tarpaulin-like” fabric. 2). Total weight: 21.5 kg. 3). Total length of the berth: 184 cm. 4). Sleeping width: from 110 to 140 cm.
A worthy model among Russian off-road passenger cars is the Chevrolet Niva. However, it does not have a number of disadvantages. For example, there is an established opinion among drivers that the Chevrolet Niva has practically no trunk. Let's figure out whether this is a lie or a real disadvantage of the domestic SUV.
Chevrolet Niva is a small-sized five-door crossover that is suitable for driving in the city and off-road. On the market since 2002, restyling took place only once. It differs from other Chevrolet models assembled in Russia in that 90% of all components are domestically produced. A remarkable fact: in 2009, this model received the award, awarded annually by the best auto magazines, “SUV of the Year 2009” in the “Premiere of the Year” and “SUV” categories.
First generation
The model that replaced the AvtoVAZ Niva and VAZ-2123 Niva is the VAZ-21236. Today, official manufacturers have announced seven vehicle configuration options: L, LC, GL, LE, GLC, LE+, SE. The description of the car and its dimensions in the simplest basic version are as follows:
- length is no more than 4 m;
- height up to 2 m (including possible additional roof rack);
- weight about 1.5 tons;
- the fuel tank holds 58 liters;
- clearance from 20 to 24 cm;
- the width including side mirrors is just over 2 m, the body without mirrors is 180 cm;
- The trunk volume of the Chevrolet Niva is 320 liters, and if the rear seats are folded down it is 650.

- The factory decided to install a frame wiper measuring 340 mm with a fastening under a standard small hook .
- The working elastic itself has a profile of 7x2.5 mm .

However, not everyone is satisfied with its work, since about 30% of the rear window area remains uncleaned. This is not so noticeable in the city, but in rainy weather on the highway, the rear window is immediately covered with dirty dispersion and that’s when a high-quality brush comes in handy.

During experiments, Chevy Niva owners install larger rear brushes, but it must be taken into account that with a length of 380 mm, the brush will already cling to the seal with might and main.
In these cases, the brush can simply be trimmed if it is frameless. With a length of 350-360 mm , the wiper works quite normally; to the right of the additional brake light it may leave a small uncleaned area. Therefore, if you choose a frame or hybrid design of a wiper, then its size should not be more than 360 mm .

When choosing a frameless wiper, you should consider the profile of the rear door glass.
Not every brush will be able to repeat it correctly, and therefore uncleaned areas may appear in the working area of the brush. If a frameless wiper was not developed specifically for the Niva Chevrolet, it is better to give preference to any frame one.

- For example, the Belgian Bosch Rear H 340 is a classic frame-type brush, it comes with a set of adapters and adapts perfectly to the shape of Niva glass. Its price is about 600 rubles.
- There is also a Chinese copy of the Bosch Eco 34C with the number 3397 011 211 8ev, which is identical in size and characteristics, but costs 100–130 rubles cheaper.
Second generation
A long and unfinished epic is the history of the second generation Chevrolet Niva. Back in 2014, the concept of a new model was prepared, and it was successfully tested on the roads of Italy and Sweden. After which the release was scheduled for the winter of 2015. But the plans were disrupted by the financial crisis, shifting the sales deadline to the winter of 2021, and in February 2018 the project was once again suspended.
Today it is known that the changes will affect engine power and external parameters of the car, but will bypass indicators characterizing capacity. The second generation promises potential buyers:
- body dimensions: length will increase slightly to 4.316 m, width will increase by 30 mm;
- the fuel tank volume will be 62 liters as opposed to the previous 58;
- trunk volume in liters – 355 instead of the previous 320.
In the Chevrolet Niva, the trunk volume will only slightly expand. The rear seats can still fold down to improve cargo space. In some trim levels it is planned to use roof rails. It should be noted that the angularity of the new Niva could theoretically affect the usable volume in which luggage can be placed.
