How to adjust the clutch on a Kalina 8 valve?

Peculiarities

On Lada Priora, Kalina and Granta cars, the clutch cable is the same as on the VAZ of previous years. On new cars, the only difference is the presence of an auto-adjustment mechanism at the end of the cable. This mechanism is designed to automatically adjust when clutch parts wear out and when the cable is pulled out. That is, so that the owner does not adjust the clutch while operating the car.

How to adjust the clutch cable on a grant

Hi all.
Today, while standing at an intersection in a traffic jam, my clutch cable broke, fortunately the exit was not far away and the road was not uphill. I bought a new cable, read the replacement instructions and started changing it. Everything was going fine, but as soon as I got to the adjustment, something strange began to happen. I can't set the 27mm gap between the plastic cable nut and the clutch fork tab. Well, firstly, the clutch foot does not push back (I can’t push the clutch basket with my hands), but the foot has movement in front, i.e. towards the radiator. Secondly, if I set 27 mm from the rearmost position of the foot and tighten the cable as much as possible, I won’t have enough threads to screw on the nut (metal locking nut). Thirdly, with such an adjustment, the cable simply dangles.

I have the auto-adjustment ratchet mechanism as option A in the photo from the Internet.

What am I doing wrong, tell me? The gears are engaged, I tried to move off with the handbrake, it seemed like the clutch was “not slipping”, while driving I didn’t notice that the clutch was slipping.

Adjusting and replacing the clutch cable on a Lada Granta

On a Lada Granta , the clutch is disengaged and engaged by the configuration of the position of the clutch paddles. The petals are pressed out using the clutch bearing, which is moved by the clutch fork. The clutch fork is practically a lever on an axle, driven by an iron clutch cable. This article provides information on replacing and adjusting the clutch cable on a car.

Tools needed to replace and adjust the clutch cable: 8 mm wrench, ruler, flat-head screwdriver

Clutch cable adjustment

Pull the cable forward (in the direction of travel) by its end, overcoming the force of the clutch pedal spring. Holding it in this position:

  1. Measure the distance from the end of the plastic guide to the clutch fork lever. The distance should be exactly 27mm. There is not enough space in the engine compartment, so it is recommended to prepare a twig or wire 27 mm long in advance and adjust it along it.
  2. If this value is different, then adjust it by rotating the leash.
  3. After releasing the clutch cable, the leader should be adjacent to the fork lever without play.
  4. Press the clutch pedal three times to activate the automatic cable length adjustment mechanism.
  5. Check the full travel of the clutch pedal; it should not exceed 146 mm.

The process is also explained in the video:

According to reviews from Lada car owners, the auto-adjustment mechanism can make cracking and clicking noises when pressing the clutch pedal. Some manage to get rid of the problem by changing the recommended length (27 mm) up or down. Finding a suitable distance is determined by the selection method.

Have you ever had to adjust the clutch? What distance did you choose? Let us remind you that we consider the problem of clutch pedal squeaks in more detail in another article.

One of the disadvantages of the Lada Kalina is problems with the clutch. To avoid visiting a car service center and save time and money, you can diagnose the malfunction and adjust the clutch on the Lada Kalina yourself in the garage. The article describes step by step how to adjust the clutch, and also includes a video that demonstrates the entire procedure.

Correcting the mechanism

If various extraneous sounds appear when the clutch is disengaged during vehicle operation, you need to check the gap on the drive fork and, if necessary, adjust it. Clutch cable adjustment is performed in the following order:

  1. Remove the air filter and pull out the cable by the tip to its maximum length.
  2. Using a caliper, measure the distance between the tip and the fork. Normally, this distance should not deviate from 2.7 mm.
  3. If discrepancies are found, turn the driver on the thread until the desired value is established. Release the end of the cable: it should press tightly against the fork.
  4. Press the clutch pedal 3-4 times to activate automatic cable length correction, measure again.

When re-measuring, a deviation from the value of 2.7 mm may again be detected. In this case, you need to repeat the described steps to adjust the cable length.

The clutch on Kalina may make squeaks and noises even after adjustment. They can be caused by the tip driver rubbing against the fork. The noise in this case comes from the engine side and is eliminated by applying lubricant to the contact point between the cable tip nut and the fork. Other possible causes - pedal creaking, cable grinding when rubbing against the casing - can be eliminated by applying lubricant. In some cases, the source of the noise may be the clutch pedal sensor.

Clutch adjustment

Clutch adjustment must be performed with the engine off and the car cooled down.

Required Tools

To carry out the procedure you will need a minimum of tools:

  • set key;
  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • ruler;
  • calipers.
  • Stages

In the video you can clearly see the adjustment process; step-by-step adjustment steps are described below:

First of all, you need to open the hood and remove the air filter.

How to Adjust the Clutch on Kalina

Our Kalinas, Prioras and other “TAZs” of the VAZ family are not without shortcomings that, like it or not, we have to put up with. The first VAZ 1117 with the code name “Kalina” rolled off the AVTOVAZ assembly line for the first time in 2004, since then the car has changed significantly, but the problems, it seems to me, have not decreased.

Among the shortcomings of the Lada Kalina there are many “sores”, but now I will touch on only one of them, in my opinion, the most pressing and often encountered by all “Kalinovodas”. Maybe many have already guessed that we will talk about clutch malfunctions , as well as how to adjust the clutch on Kalina .

The Lada Kalina with a single-disc “dry” clutch, which has a central pressure spring and a cable connected to the pedal using a ratchet mechanism.
The peculiarity of the mechanism is the ability to automatically adjust the length of the cable. This is very convenient and solves many problems associated with clutch adjustment. However, whatever one may say, you still have to adjust the clutch on Kalina with your own hands.

Features of the VAZ 2112 clutch

The machine is equipped with a dry-type single-plate friction clutch with a central pressure spring. Before adjusting the clutch on Kalina, any motorist must take into account that the control pedal is connected to the disc via a cable with a special ratcheting mechanism.

How does automatic cable tightening work?

As a result of intensive use, the friction linings of the disc gradually wear out. The ratcheting mechanism built into the drive design allows you to compensate for wear for a certain period of time - it gradually tightens the cable. During operation of the device, the fork rotates and the bushing spring is gradually compressed. As a result, the cable end clamps are compressed, after which the latter is released and tensions the cable.

The purpose of this design is to facilitate the maintenance process. According to the plans of VAZ engineers, the mechanism should save the owner from the need to make adjustments himself. But this is all only in theory, but in practice it turns out that you cannot do without adjusting the clutch.

    When should adjustments be made?

Before adjusting the clutch on a Kalina car, you need to determine the moment when the automatic cable locking no longer functions. This is not difficult, especially since the machine itself signals problems:

    1. Loss of traction, friction clutch does not provide a reliable connection between the flywheel and the disk. The consequence of such a defect will be the loss of a significant part of the torque force.
    2. The clutch control pedal does not return to its initial position, which, in fact, is a consequence of the first point.
    3. Poor clutch disengagement - the pedal is not pressed all the way, which makes changing gears difficult.

The symptoms, however, are similar to those when clutch adjustment is needed on a VAZ 2107, so experienced motorists can skip this unit and proceed directly to the test.

    How to check the clutch?

To make sure that the mechanism needs to be adjusted, you should perform a number of basic checks:

    • Press the pedal several times and release - any extraneous sounds are unacceptable. For better control, you can press with your hand, this way you can feel the pedal stroke more fully.
    • Check the pedal for sticking; if it returns with noticeable twitching, then adjustment is necessary.
    • Check the full travel of the pedal using a ruler or tape measure. Press and release the pedal several times, then measure the distance of its outer edge to the floor; if it is more than 146 mm, then the mechanism needs to be adjusted.
    • Check the movement of the cable guide relative to the clutch release fork; the maximum distance between these elements is 27 mm.
    • If the runout of the driven disk linings is more than 0.5 mm, adjustment is also required.

When performing checks, it is important that the car engine is turned off.

    Clutch faults Lada Kalina

Long-term use leaves its mark on the clutch mechanism; the driven disc linings wear out and become thinner. In order to compensate for this wear, the ratchet mechanism, as we have already said, automatically compensates for the degree of wear and tightens the cable. This is done by turning the release fork, causing the spring, which is located in the bushing of the adjustment mechanism, to compress. The spring, in turn, compresses the clamps of the toothed tip of the cable, after which the tip is released and tightens the cable.

Signs indicating the need to adjust the clutch on a Lada Kalina

Among obvious symptoms such as: problems with gear shifting, extraneous sounds when depressing the clutch pedal, poor traction and the clutch not completely disengaging, there are other signs that indicate the need to adjust the Lada Kalina clutch. In order to identify them, carry out a simple check.

    1. The engine must be completely stopped.
    2. Depress the clutch pedal several times and listen for any extraneous sounds while pressing, for example, friction, squeaking, clicking, etc.
    3. Pay attention to whether there is any jamming while moving the pedal. If you cannot feel it with your foot, try pressing the pedal with your hand and check the stroke.
    4. If the pedal jerks or sticks while driving, the clutch on the Lada Kalina most likely needs to be adjusted .

Other signs of the need to adjust the clutch of your Lada Kalina:

    1. Take a ruler and check the distance from the floor of the car to the outside of the pedal.
    2. Depress the pedal fully until it hits the floor.
    3. Release it and check the distance again; if it exceeds 14.6 cm, it is necessary to adjust the pedal travel.
    4. If: the full pedal stroke is 14.6 cm, the lower cable guide moves freely relative to the release fork lever by more than 2.7 cm, there is a runout of the driven disk linings of more than 0.5 mm, and the distance between the linings and rivets is less than 0, 2 mm - adjustment or complete replacement of the clutch is necessary.

How to properly adjust the clutch on a Lada Kalina with your own hands?

    1. Open the hood and remove the air filter.
    2. Find the end and pull on it to provide maximum tension to the cable.
    3. Using a caliper, check the distance between the fork arm and the driver. If the distance is greater than 2.7 cm, rotate the driver along the threads of the tip to correct the size.
    4. Once you have adjusted the distance, depress the clutch several times and check the clearances again. If there is a shift, adjust everything again. You need to do this until you get the required result.

If you still have not been able to adjust the clutch on your Lada Kalina, contact a specialist, or completely replace it. Although, if you were unable to adjust the clutch, then it is unlikely that you should undertake the work of replacing it.

What does incorrect adjustment of the Kalina clutch lead to?

If the gaps are not set correctly, the auto compensator may not work correctly, or may not work at all if the gap under the hood is too low (10mm or less). The release bearing may also howl.

For example, my release bearing was humming in 4th and 5th gears. After adjusting the clutch cable , the noise disappeared. Many questions also arise about the fact that the clutch “takes over” at the very end. This is, in principle, normal. Structurally, the clutch on Kalina begins to grab in the second half of the stroke. Therefore, setting it up to start the stroke means making constructive changes to its operation, which is not desirable.

Like all “basins”, Kalina is not at all flawless. Over its more than ten-year history, the model has been refined more than once, but it has not been possible to get rid of some problems. Among the “Kalinovodov” it is recognized that the torque transmission mechanism, due to its design features, is the weak link of the car. Despite all the modernization in this area, car enthusiasts have to periodically adjust the clutch.
