How to fix problems if the UAZ Patriot stove does not heat up

The stove will blow perfectly only when it is fully operational. UAZ Patriot went on sale in 2005. Until 2012, cars were equipped with heaters of the same design. Since 2012, UAZ has made some changes to the design of the Patriot, as well as to the interior of the cabin. Among other innovations, another stove was added to heat passengers.

Over a long period of operation of an SUV, it happens that on a Patriot the stove blows in the opposite direction. In severe frost, when the temperature outside the car reaches -30 o C, the front radiator cannot cope with heating the cabin, and the passengers in the rear sofa freeze. Some people began to complain to service centers located throughout the country that the UAZ Patriot stove was not blowing well. The designers added an additional radiator located under the front passenger seat.

Purpose

The main function of the stove on the UAZ Patriot is to heat the interior, and it also helps to cope with the problem of glass fogging, which is very important in the cold season. On versions released before 2012, only a front heater was installed, and starting from 2012, the Patriot was equipped with a second additional heater, this helped increase the comfort of the SUV in winter. Thanks to the additional heater, the rear of the cabin became better heated. In addition, depending on the configuration, a domestic SUV can be equipped with climate control, thanks to which absolute comfort is achieved in summer and winter. The only drawback of the air conditioner is the increase in fuel consumption during operation of the ventilation and heating system.

Control system

The stove and air conditioning system are regulated using a control unit (control unit), which includes a system of regulators, thanks to which various tasks of the following nature are controlled and performed:

  • The stove operating mode can be set either manually or automatically;
  • The Control Unit reads information from the temperature sensor located in the SUV's interior;
  • Thanks to a special regulator, the control unit can operate in several speed modes;
  • The maximum current consumption of the stove is 14 Amps;
  • The air blower operates from the power supply.

Club "Skillful hands UAZ Patriot"

Many owners of early UAZ Patriot models decided to install an additional radiator in the cabin themselves. The heat source for the heating stove radiator is antifreeze from the cooling system. For self-installation you will need: a radiator, a fan, a shut-off valve and several hoses for supplying warm coolant. The efficiency of the interior heater reaches about 93%.

Problem with the stove

Post by Gennadiy » Mon Jan 13, 2014 01:55

Good day to all.

The problem is with the stove. I climbed the entire section on climate control equipment. Either I was inattentive, or I simply didn’t understand something, but I didn’t encounter such a problem (I’m not 100% sure about this).

The essence of the problem is this:

1) The front heater blows weakly when blowing into the face, blaming the cabin filter (I'll check it tomorrow). I would be very grateful if you could advise me what else I should look at.

2) when the air temperature regulator is set to a position slightly warmer than the middle position, then a dull knock is heard under the floor container. It doesn’t seem like anything is leaking, but maybe I just don’t know where to look.

Car first. I don’t know much, but I would like to study it. I have no particular desire to contact the service, I would still like to try to figure out the problem myself.

UAZ Patriot petrol car 2013 limited edition.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

To avoid starting a new topic, I’ll ask the question here, especially since one of my colleagues above has a similar problem. With the onset of frost (-19), the stove did not turn on immediately. During the first 15-30 minutes of driving (already when the engine is warmed up, judging by the sensor on the panel, the engine) in the “left” (to middle) positions of the temperature regulator, cold air is blown into the cabin. When “auto” is turned on, the same. Warm appears only when the temperature regulator is positioned above average (as I understand it, when the pump turns on). After some time, the stove comes to its senses and cheerfully begins to blow quite warm air, even in the left positions of the temperature regulator, and in auto mode. There is an assumption (from a guy who came up to talk about the patriot) that, they say, “this is how it should be”, at first the engine warms up, then the thermostat works and the stove starts working - but. 30 minutes delay?? Or is it normal at -20?

The air recirculation damper is leaking.

To eliminate the leak, it is necessary to dismantle the glove box, then remove the plastic panel, and then make sure that the seal is in the correct position. The sealing rubber should fit snugly along the entire contour of the ventilation hole.

Below are options with the correct and incorrect position of the sealing gum:

The stove on the Patriot does not heat well: reasons and solutions to the problem

There are several reasons why the stove in a car breaks down:

  1. If cold air is blowing from the heating system, then the system may be air-filled. It is necessary to check the tightness of the pipe structure. Check the antifreeze level in the tank. To check the antifreeze level, you must position the car level and not on a slope. The test is carried out on a cold engine. The coolant level must be located no lower than the (MIN) and no higher (MAX) mark.

If the stove on the Patriot does not work due to a low level of antifreeze, then you need to add antifreeze to the tank. If a leak is detected from the pipes, we fix it ourselves, following the following procedure:

  • open the expansion tank cap and fill in antifreeze to the required level;
  • start the engine, leave the expansion tank open;
  • increase the engine speed to 2 - 3 thousand per minute;
  • turn off the engine, add the required amount of antifreeze again and close the reservoir with a lid.

  1. The thermostat is one of the reasons why the heating system is not working properly. When a certain temperature of the coolant is reached, the thermostat opens with the help of a valve and releases the liquid in a large circle, using its entire volume. Checking if the thermostat is working properly is quite simple. You just need to observe the heating operation. If in a UAZ Patriot the heater blows weakly at low speeds, and at higher speeds cool air appears, then the cause of the malfunction is a failed thermostat. It is necessary to replace it by draining all antifreeze from the cooling system. After installing a new thermostat, new antifreeze is poured into the cooling system.
  2. The water pump can also cause cold air to enter the cabin. If cool air is blowing from the radiator at low speeds, then the cooling pump is most likely faulty. If the pump malfunctions, operating fluid pressure is not created. The water pump needs to be replaced.
  3. As a result of suspecting a malfunction in the cooling system, do not neglect the cause of the regulator failure. It is this system that switches the heat/cold operating modes in the heater. The system drives the air supply impeller from the fan using a thin cable, which sometimes gets jammed. We cannot exclude the fact that it is the problem of a jammed regulator cable that may be the main reason for the malfunction of the heater. In case of malfunction, the regulator must be replaced.
  4. Radiator. During the operation of the car, the radiator may become clogged; in this case, antifreeze does not pass through the radiator tubes well. The part must be replaced with a new original one.

You can trust the professional workers at the service station, however, you should try to understand the design yourself. The car cooling system is not as complicated as it seems. On cold winter days, a working stove will come in handy.

Car reviews and test drives

Details Category: Test drive 10/20/2019
Today we will share our impressions of a test drive of a UAZ Patriot SUV with automatic transmission.

On October 1, 2021, sales of the long-awaited version of the UAZ Patriot SUV with automatic transmission started. The plant has finally heard numerous requests from customers and is offering this model with an automatic transmission for the first time. Today we visited the Auto-1 car showroom in Naberezhnye Chelny to personally evaluate the new product during a test drive.

WHAT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS IN THE UAZ PATRIOT?

First, let’s recall what kind of “automatic” the UAZ Patriot received in 2019. This is a French 6-speed PUNCH Powerglide 6L50 unit. This automatic transmission was previously installed on cars such as BMW 3 Series and X3, Chevrolet Camaro, Cadillac CTS. Gearboxes that arrive on the assembly line in Ulyanovsk are produced at the PUNCH Powerglide Strasbourg plant, located in the north-east of France.

In addition to the automatic transmission, the Patriot received a new engine (ZMZ-Pro engine with 150 hp, which previously debuted on the UAZ Pro truck model), a different transfer case and a modified cooling system.

TEST DRIVE UAZ PATRIOT WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Externally, UAZ Patriot cars with automatic transmission can be recognized by their radiator grille - it is painted black. Otherwise, we can say there are no differences - it’s still the same Patriot we’re familiar with, with its characteristic brutal appearance and angular shapes.

For a test drive, we got a UAZ Patriot with an automatic transmission in an expensive configuration - here you have leather seats, navigation, and a bunch of other pleasant options.

THIS IS INTERESTING: How to remove the radio on a Ford Focus 3

Oh, it’s been a long time since we tested SUVs from Ulyanovsk. However, many of the Patriot's traits have not changed (both good and bad). For example, car doors still need to be slammed, not locked—the locks remain unchanged.

The same applies to the “gate” that closes the trunk - it closes with force, since there is also a spare wheel hanging on it. The trunk itself has not changed - it is still a huge space of a regular rectangular shape.

The top of the luggage compartment is closed with a flexible curtain, which, if necessary, can be removed and loaded “to the ceiling” (a summer resident’s dream).

The rear sofa also offers plenty of room for both legs and head. Since the car is of frame construction, there is practically no floor tunnel, which allows three adult passengers to comfortably accommodate.

After last year's update, the Patriot received handles on the A-pillars and B-pillars, which make it not only more convenient to climb into a fairly tall car, but also to hold on to them when driving off-road.

As mentioned above, the test car received improved leather seats - they have a more pleasant profile and enhanced lateral support. The driver's seat allows you to adjust the seat height and lumbar support, and the steering column is adjustable in both height and angle.

The most important difference in the driver’s seat is the automatic transmission selector, which replaced the manual transmission lever. The new selector was specially designed for the Patriot. The massive handle fits comfortably in the palm of your hand.

The only negative is that if you raise the driver’s seat as high as possible, the automatic transmission selector feels a bit low for the driver. Otherwise, everything is fine - the lever switches effortlessly, the automatic transmission modes are clearly recorded.

To switch the mode, you need to press the key on the lever and move it to the desired position. The switching pattern is classic (P,R,N,D).

This machine has an adaptation function, that is, the settings change depending on your driving style. In addition, there is also a manual mode, which is important for an SUV, especially off-road.

The car is richly equipped - there are heated seats, steering wheel, multimedia system with navigation. rear view camera, parking sensors (front and rear) and much more.

The rear view camera has dynamic markings. However, the large mirror flaps make it easy to park without the help of a camera.

After starting to drive a Patriot with an automatic transmission, at first the left foot, out of habit, tries to find the clutch pedal, which is not there. The automatic transmission changes gears quickly and almost imperceptibly for the driver. After just a couple of kilometers you forget about your left leg, as if the manual version never existed. Without the need to change gears, you can concentrate as much as possible on the road.

Naturally, 150 hp. for such a large and heavy car, this is not a record. Whether in manual or automatic mode, the Patriot drives measuredly and slowly. In general, those who have ever sat behind the wheel of this car probably remember their feelings: there are no dynamics, but you drive reliably and confidently, like driving a tank.

When switching to automatic transmission, this feeling did not disappear - the Patriot still drives like a tank. However, after the latest improvements, this tank does not require steering when driving on asphalt - the 2019 Patriot has finally begun to handle the road almost at the level of passenger cars.

At the same time, its off-road qualities have also been preserved, for which it is mainly valued and bought. A washer is still available on the central tunnel, allowing you to select rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, as well as a low row in the transfer case.

Another thing I would like to improve is the effort on the steering wheel. Despite the presence of power steering, working with the Patriot's steering wheel is still a little harder than on conventional cars. Considering that after the introduction of automatic transmission, girls may also appear among potential owners, it would be possible to reconfigure the steering, making it lighter.

PRICES AND CONFIGURATIONS OF UAZ PATRIOT WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The most affordable configuration of the Patriot on the automatic is “Optimum” - from 1,034 thousand rubles. Unlike the manual, the automatic version has an additional interior heater in this configuration.

In the “Premium” version, the SUV will cost 1,180 thousand rubles. For this money, the buyer will receive all the options of the Prestige version, plus an additional interior heater, a winter package and a Climate package.

The top version “Status” will cost 1268 thousand rubles. The buyer will receive a car equipped with the “Maximum” version, plus an additional interior heater and new 18-inch wheels.

For special connoisseurs, the plant offers a limited series of 300 cars in the EDITION I configuration, which cost RUB 1,298,000. The EDITION I version has the following distinctive features:

  • exclusive color (dark gray titanium);
  • exterior nameplates EDITION I;
  • number plate in the area of the automatic transmission selector (No. from 1 to 300);
  • Newly designed leather seats;
  • leather upholstery (2 colors to choose from);
  • EDITION I embossing on the backrests of the front seats;
  • EDITION I interior mats.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, let's summarize. The appearance of automatic transmission made the UAZ Patriot one step closer to an urban crossover. I am glad that at the same time, all the off-road potential of this model, for which fans love it, has been preserved. The appearance of an “automatic” and a set of recent design improvements made it possible to make a high-quality car, which is now convenient to use not only during trips into nature and off-road, but also during daily use in urban conditions.

The version with automatic transmission made the UAZ Patriot a more comfortable and convenient car for everyday use. Now among the owners of this model there will probably also be representatives of the fair sex, who were previously scared off by the lack of an “automatic” and did not even consider this option.

Heater fan

In stoves, the fan is replaced in rare cases, for example, if work occurs under increased load, or if moisture gets on the parts, and also when it is impossible to make repairs. Replacing it is not difficult; difficulty may arise when removing the front console.

The fan and motor of the UAZ Patriot heater change as follows:

  • The console is removed;
  • The fan is removed;
  • The fan and motor are replaced together;
  • Assembly.

Design

The UAZ Patriot uses a heater in the form of a radiator, but not the same as the main cooling radiator in front of the engine, but smaller. In the UAZ Patriot, the heater radiator is installed in front under the instrument panel (dashboard). Inside it there are numerous aluminum plates, near which hot antifreeze or antifreeze circulates. There is a fan above the radiator that blows air around it. Also, the design includes a special damper that regulates the ratio of hot and cold air supplied to the cabin.

There may be two heater radiators in the UAZ Patriot in some trim levels with air conditioning. Although, in most cases, the design provides only one radiator. The entire set of parts can last a long time, the Patriot can travel more than 100 thousand kilometers, and the heater will quietly perform its function. However, this is true under one condition - timely replacement of the coolant is necessary. Although a breakdown may not necessarily occur because of this, a defective product is no exception.

Symptoms of a problem

The heater radiator will have to be replaced if a characteristic smell of antifreeze is noticed inside the interior of the UAZ Patriot. It may appear due to coolant leakage from cracks in the radiator. Cracks can occur from impact, careless installation, or over time from the formation of oxides. The leak should be repaired as soon as possible, otherwise a significant part of the coolant may end up on the floor in the cabin.

The flap does not obscure

If the damper, which directs air either through the heater radiator or bypass, begins to act up over time, then some of the cold air (or even all!) will go past the heater radiator without any heating. How much time and money will you have to spend on repairs? If the damper actuator is stuck, cleaning and lubricating it usually helps. And if the damper itself has fallen into pieces, you will have to look for the same one at a disassembly site - do not buy an assembled heater unit. The cost of replacement work depends on the vehicle and the complexity of the heating system.

Insufficient coolant level

This is now unlikely, because many modern cars have antifreeze level sensors. However, such cases do occur (say, in cars of previous generations). Imagine - the antifreeze or antifreeze (maybe due to leaking radiators or pipes), the stove does not receive enough heated liquid, and it is practically cold, the fan is blowing, and the air is cold (it simply does not heat). You need to add coolant to the level ( read how to do this here ). Also, if radiators or pipes are leaking, then the leak must be eliminated.

It is worth noting that if the cooling compound leaks, “air plugs” may form, so even if you add antifreeze - antifreeze, you need to wait a while for the air to come out.

The causes of malfunctions may be

  • The heater (heater) radiator duct is clogged (over time, the pipes tend to become clogged);
  • The radiator has worn out (over time, metals are depleted, this occurs due to dynamic changes in temperatures, atmospheric pressure and corrosion of metals).

Small clarification. Replacing the radiator of the heating system of the UAZ-3163 “Patriot” can be done in two ways: you can dismantle the panel (dashboard) or without dismantling the instrument panel. Service station specialists, for example, use the first option, as they are well versed in all the nuances and subtleties of the dashboard. The second method is usually used by everyone else.

Why does it heat poorly?

Why doesn't the stove heat up? Firstly, the heater will not work if the coolant is not heated, that is, it is too early to turn on the heater on a cold engine. Let the unit warm up first. But poor heating on a hot engine at idle may be due to a number of reasons.

Air lock or lack of coolant

When the pipes in the car leak at the connections or due to cracks due to their aging, the level of liquid in the cooling system decreases. Because of this, circulation in the system and in particular inside the heating radiator deteriorates.

Reduced circulation is also caused by emerging air jams. They appear most often after replacing antifreeze or adding fluid to the system. First of all, check the fluid level and add if necessary. Leaks must be eliminated by replacing pipes or tightening clamps.

To remove the plug when the stove heats poorly, you need to open the expansion tank and remove the cap from the radiator. After this, squeeze with your hands several times all the cooling pipes one by one that you can reach. If the air does not escape, it is recommended to start the engine and turn on the interior heating at full power.

Heater electric motor

When the stove stops working altogether, but the fuses are intact and the wiring is in excellent condition, the reason will probably lie in a failed electric fan of the UAZ Hunter heater. It will need to be removed through the passenger compartment from the front passenger's foot side. There is nothing complicated in this procedure, since UAZ engineers did not hide the electric fan too far. The entire task of removing and replacing the electric heater motor on a Hunter comes down to performing the following procedures:

  • Disconnect the negative from your battery to avoid working under voltage. This is extremely dangerous and undesirable;
  • Remove the heater cover and rotate the impeller on the fan motor so that the mounting screw is accessible;
  • Unscrew this screw;
  • Next, disconnect the block with the wires of the electric fan of the heater of your SUV;
  • Using a 10mm wrench, you will also need to unscrew the bolt that holds the wiring harness bracket;
  • Unscrew 2 more bolts intended for fixing the electric motor on the body of the furnace equipment;
  • Now you can remove the electric motor itself;
  • Unscrew a couple of stud nuts and remove the mounting washer from the motor.

In some cases, you can count on the fact that minor repairs will restore the functionality of the old electric fan. But this does not always help and not in all situations. If the motor is badly worn, the brushes are worn out, or the housing is damaged, there is no point in trying to repair the device. It would be much more correct to install a new motor and assemble the unit in the reverse order. Don't forget to check the condition of the impeller itself. Sometimes you have to change it because of damage and defects. Act based on your specific situation.
