How does a chopper differ from other motorcycles?
Chopper in English means “chop”.
The predecessors of these motorcycles were simple production motorcycles that were specially redesigned and improved for street racing, then they were called “bobbers.” If we talk about the difference between choppers and bobbers, then first of all we need to say that choppers lack a decent number of elements. So, for example, choppers do not have a front fender, some models do not have front brakes, and there is no deep rear fender. The motorcycle frame has undergone significant changes. A characteristic distinctive feature of choppers is the high steering wheel, which is usually very shocking. Choppers also differ from other motorcycles by the presence of a rear “roller” (this is a wide wheel, sometimes Russian motorcyclists call it VShK, which means Great Wide Wheel), and the presence of a dry frame (without rear suspension). In addition, this brand of motorcycle is distinguished by a gas tank that resembles a drop. It should be noted that this motorcycle contains a large number of elements made of chrome, or parts are coated with chrome. As for chopper engines, they differ significantly from sports class engines; first of all, they do not have pronounced dynamics. Riding a chopper is more focused on comfort and not very fast movement, which is why most chopper engines operate at low speeds.
As a rule, shock absorbers on choppers are softer than on other bikes. If we talk about torque, choppers have huge torque. It makes it possible to move off practically without adding gas, and it also allows you to drive slowly in top gear. For the first time, such a motorcycle as a chopper appeared in the USA in 1950, and to this day this bike is very popular among speed and road lovers.
What is a chopper and who drives it?

Among all motorcycles, the so-called choppers are considered the most brutal. Such a motorcycle cannot leave anyone indifferent; when people see a chopper driving down the street, they always express their emotions. But a biker culture has not yet formed in our country; not everyone understands which motorcycles belong to this class, although the number of people wishing to acquire such equipment is constantly growing.
The word “chopper” itself can be translated into Russian as “stripped down”. The class began to emerge after World War II, like the rest of biker culture. Former soldiers who rode motorcycles during their service began to use these vehicles in their civilian lives. Some of them felt that production motorcycles have a lot of unnecessary equipment, for example, a brake on the front wheel, which should be gotten rid of. They began to remove many parts from their motorcycles, calling them choppers.
As the years passed, motorcycle manufacturers tried to follow the emerging fashion; they began to produce motorcycles that corresponded to the biker’s definition of a chopper - they simply did not install “extra” parts on them. The concept of “chopper” itself has also undergone many changes. Now this term only covers those motorcycles that not only lack the front fender and front brake, but also have the handlebars lengthened and the frame redesigned. Now choppers are fashionable and stylish motorcycles that attract attention.
Chopper cannot be a fast motorcycle, a rare representative of this class can reach a speed of 100 km/h, they feel on the roads like whales in the sea - they have nowhere to rush, everyone must give way to them. That's why you rarely see young people sitting in the seats of choppers. As a rule, the driver of such a motorcycle is an adult man, over thirty-five, who has achieved a lot in this life; he sits in the saddle of his motorcycle with a straight back and looks at the world around him from top to bottom. A good motorcycle costs even more than an average passenger car, their fuel consumption is almost the same, and the cost of operation cannot even be compared - a chopper costs its owner much more. But the owner does not mind any money for his war horse.
Choosing a Chopper
When a future biker is faced with the question of choosing his first motorcycle, very often the image of a man in a leather jacket and bandana slowly riding along an endless highway somewhere in the Wild West on a powerful motorcycle appears before his eyes.
Usually such a motorcycle is called a chopper, and this is what many future motorcyclists want to buy. So what is a chopper?
How is a chopper different from other bikes?
Let us note right away, in order to avoid confusion, that a chopper is one of the varieties of a cruiser. If we look even deeper, this is a classic cruiser with a powerful engine, designed for long, leisurely driving.
The appearance and its technical characteristics fully correspond to its purpose: impressive weight, powerful engine, large dimensions, chrome parts, a teardrop-shaped gas tank, as well as genuine leather cases located on its sides.
A motorcycle in this category is characterized by a stepped saddle, as well as forward footpegs, soft suspension and a handlebar located close to the driver. This arrangement contributes to increased comfort when driving on the highway.
Since the main purpose of a chopper is long-term driving on the highway, such a motorcycle will be a little cramped in the city, this will also need to be kept in mind when choosing it as your main motorcycle.
The technical features of the chopper are a low-speed powerful engine and a wide rear wheel of reduced diameter, as well as a narrow front wheel of large diameter.
Main manufacturers
When choosing a chopper, you must first familiarize yourself with the list of manufacturers of these bikes.
Harley Davidson motorcycles are considered the standard chopper among bikers. For a long time, they had an almost monopoly on the chopper market both in the USA and around the world until, in 2013, a new manufacturer, Victory, which had previously specialized in the production of cheaper motorcycles, appeared on the motorcycle market. He introduced choppers under the Indian brand to the market. Since then, there has been constant competition between Harleys and Indians.
In addition to American choppers, there are also bikes from Japan on the market. It is believed that American motorcycles are more reliable and of higher quality. Their advantages also include durability and the use of the most advanced technologies in their design. However, this view of Japanese choppers is gradually changing and motorcycles such as the Yamaha Drag Star and Honda Steed can now be bought quite easily by a beginner, since they have an almost ideal price/quality combination.
Engine power
After studying the manufacturer of the chopper, when choosing it, you need to pay attention to such a parameter as motor power. For example, choppers with low cubic capacity are more suitable for beginners in motorcycle riding, as they are more economical and lighter in weight, which makes them easier to control.
However, in Russia, beginners usually do not listen to the advice of experienced comrades and try to immediately buy a large motorcycle with a powerful 750–1100 cc engine. centimeters. But this is the lot of rich bikers, and a motorcycle of the 400–600 cc class is quite suitable for a person with average income. cm.
Choosing the right kitchen chopper
Before choosing a specific model, you should take into account the purpose of the purchase: how often you have to cook, what volumes you have to process, taking into account the needs of family members. Maybe, after thinking about these questions, the future owner of the magic device will decide that the chopper is electric, with a good set of functions, and even from a well-known brand is clearly overkill
It is quite possible that all the needs of the family can be satisfied by a simple and reliable mechanic or a small hand-held device. If the intention to buy a hospital with electric drive has not changed, several technical parameters should be taken into account.
Drive power, the volume of processing and its speed depend on this characteristic. Higher power level, faster grinding speed even with significant volumes. Devices with an indicator of no more than 200 W are considered low-power. Their capabilities are limited to soft substances and small volumes. They are distinguished by their small dimensions, simple design, and high degree of readiness for work. Competitors with torque output above 200 W are designed for heavy and solid substances, significant volumes, and are large in size.
Container capacity
An important characteristic on which processing volumes and durability depend is the container’s capacity and its material. Depending on your needs, you can select small devices without a container, with a container of up to a liter for 1 - 3 people, more than a liter for a family of 4 people. If solid substances predominate in the processing, the capacity should be larger even with a small family composition. The container itself may be made of glass; in general, the material is strong, resistant to scratches and other damage, but it is glass with all that it implies. Polycarbonate analogues are considered more reliable in terms of strength; they are lightweight, heat-resistant, environmentally friendly, and are also cheaper.
Availability of pulse mode
If it is present, the cutting part works with pauses. This allows for better control over the degree of grinding. If necessary, you can change the cutting mode into large pieces until pureed. This option is required when chopping high-density vegetables such as ice. For these purposes, some versions have a special switch. Budget choppers are regulated by pressing a button, constant pressing is normal mode, interruption is pulse mode.
Overload protection
If you plan to work for a long time with significant volumes, you should pay attention to the presence of overload protection in the design. It can be mechanical in the form of a plastic gear or electronic when a thermal fuse is installed in the circuit
In the first case, when the maximum load is reached, the gear breaks, in the second the fuse burns. In both cases, the system prevents overheating and engine failure.
Chopper (motorcycle)
The word “chopper” (English chopper - from the English “chop” - to chop) is firmly attached to the type of motorcycle with an elongated frame and front fork. Motorcycles with a standard frame and fork are usually called stock. The predecessors of choppers were serial motorcycles that were converted for street racing - “bobbers” (eng. bob
- short haircut). Unlike bobbers, the future chopper not only has all unnecessary things removed - the front fender, sometimes the front brake, a deep rear fender, but the frame itself is also seriously redesigned. A high handlebar is installed, often quite shocking (for example, “Ape Hangers”), a backrest (“Sissy bar”), the roots of which come from the same bobbers, and forward footrests for the motorcyclist. Typical attributes of many neo-choppers are also a rear “roller” (a wide wheel, sometimes called VShK - Great Wide Wheel in Russia), a dry (hardtail) frame (without rear suspension), a gas tank in the form of a small drop, a faceted diamond tank or “coffin” "(coffin tank) and a constant abundance of chrome parts. Choppers first appeared in the United States in the 1950s. At first, they were made by enthusiasts based on production motorcycles “Harley-Davidson” and “Indian”; 2-cylinder in-line engines “BSA” and “Triumph” are also considered canonical. One of the examples of early chopper construction is the Captain America motorcycle shown in the film Easy Rider, ridden by Peter Fonda.
In Russia, enthusiasts often make choppers for themselves from Soviet Ural and Dnepr motorcycles, often using car engines from Oka and Zaporozhets, and the latter received the almost official name “ZAZocycles” in Russia.
There are several areas of chopper construction: the so-called “Old School”, the creation of show-stoppers (choppers intended more for various exhibitions than for daily use), and the modern custom school. The old-school style is distinguished by a virtually unchanged steering column angle, “horned” steering wheel, drop tank and standard rear wheels. The old school style is also characterized by specific painting techniques in the form of various geometric patterns of thin intersecting lines, the so-called “paint striping”.
Everything you need to know about choppers - motorcycles with the American spirit of freedom
For most mortals, everything that is not a sportbike, a crossbike or an obvious classic is a chopper.
If we try to give a clearer definition to a chopper, it is a road motorcycle with a modified rake (the angle of the fork relative to the perpendicular to the ground) or a frame created from scratch and often an extended fork. However, this description is very arbitrary and superficial. How is it that absolutely everything is called chopper these days, including factory, absolutely standard motorcycles, the defiantly boring appearance of which is what customizers are fighting against? Let’s look into this material. Like almost all US custom culture, tuning and customizing motorcycles began after World War II, when American soldiers returned home and quickly began to miss the adrenaline, unjustified risk and the constant company of the same crazy, young and rather lost people. It was then and it was they who began to remove fenders, headlights, bags from heavy and overloaded Harley-Davidson and Indian - in a word, everything that did not accelerate (or even more so stop) the motorcycle, even the front brake sometimes “went into the furnace.” This is how bobbers appeared, the forerunners of choppers. Now, by removing absolutely everything unnecessary from a large motorcycle, and replacing the rest with smaller ones (for example, instead of a large tank, install a smaller one, do the same with the headlight, footpegs, exhaust system), you can “lose” the motorcycle by 30–50 kilograms. In the 1950s, with the fashion for fenders covering half the wheels, huge seats, heavy materials and the widespread use of metal, the motorcycle was almost twice as light.
In the 1960s, the culture of customization, after working exclusively on speed and ease, plunged into an era of show off, kitsch and nonconformism. After many years of speed and power modifications without regard to style and beauty, the time has come for bright, stylish and extremely pretentious modifications. First of all, the frames went under the knife - the modification affected the installation angle of the front fork. Many bikers, of course, still argue that the main feature of choppers - a crazy long fork with a wild rake - was originally completely utilitarian. In its own way, this is true - a long fork at a large angle allows you to ride very confidently, even without hands, on a straight road, of which there are many in the States. But turning and maneuvering is much more difficult, especially if the fork is taller than human height. It is not for nothing that many states have laws limiting the length of the fork and the angle of its installation, as well as the height of the handlebars.
In the 1960s, the culture of customization, after working exclusively on speed and ease, plunged into an era of show off, kitsch and nonconformism.
The further history of choppers was one of increasing madness and deliberate absurdity, which makes them one of the most radical types of motorcycle customization. So, in the 1970s, it was absolutely normal to create a monolithic structure glued together with fiberglass and putty, including a frame, a tank, a seat base, an oil tank, a rear wing and a sissybar (essentially a passenger backrest, the size of which customizers also brought to madness, and the shape of to works of abstract art) and painted in psychedelic colors. In the 1980s, everything calmed down a little and became more stable. By this time, Harley-Davidson and its Japanese competitors were making fairly light and neat motorcycles that, to many ordinary people, were not much different from painstakingly hand-built choppers. Nowadays absolutely everything is called a chopper - factory American cruisers, completely custom mega-projects, and “naked” touring motorcycles. This is an established concept, like punk rock, a kind of “combing with one brush.”
Nowadays, chopper manufacturing has three directions, radically different from each other. In the first, most common case, a modern American, Japanese or, OK, even English cruiser is taken, lightened slightly, transformed with parts from eBay, sometimes painted in a more or less interesting color and from now on called a chopper. A good exception to the rule is changing the rack by replacing the triple clamp, springer fork, hardtail frame (without rear suspension) and a couple of custom parts.
The second way, closest to the classic, refined concept of a chopper, has become very popular again in America in the last ten years. During the construction, an old frame from Harley-Davidson or Triumph is used, preferably with a modified geometry, of course, a hardtail, an engine at least 30 years old, the same crazy long forks, strangely shaped handlebars, tanks, often painted 30-40 years ago and fairly peeling over time. own life. The construction set is assembled from old, even vintage parts and seasoned with hand-made parts.
Chopper is, in essence, refined freedom on the verge of asociality and anarchy.
And, of course, the third option, in general, is hated by everyone who is “true.” Some do not classify this trend as choppers at all and simply call it a custom bike. This includes everything that can be seen on Discovery - Orange County Choppers, West Coast Choppers and others like them (although, admittedly, Jesse James, the creator of West Coast Choppers, made really good classic choppers, just not for TV). Ultra-expensive, inelegantly pretentious, made to order from corporations, stars and TV presenters, the monsters, of course, represent a flight of engineering, but there is no talk of any rebellion or painstaking manual labor here.
Harley-Davidson has always exploited the concept of freedom in its marketing policy. Only a motorcycle could give freedom, only an empty highway, you and your engine and all that. Forever two wheels. In this case, chopper is, in essence, refined freedom on the verge of asociality and anarchy. Nothing superfluous, a minimum of comfort and at the same time complete self-expression through the device you created. This attitude has suited motorcycle clubs very well since the very beginning of motorcycle culture.
Mongols MC bikers in San Diego on choppers with high handlebars ape hanger
And it is choppers with their straight-through mufflers that are primarily associated with Outlaw MC led by the Hells Angels. This is quite justified, since the first builders of choppers, who devoted all their time to their favorite work, most often were members of numerous motorcycle clubs, who later rushed in fairly large groups around quiet American cities, scaring law-abiding citizens. Many clubs build their motorcycles according to their characteristic canons so that they can be distinguished even without “colors”. Thus, Mongols MC can most often be seen on ultra-low large Harley-Davidsons, for example, Road King, with unusually high ape hanger handlebars and footpegs placed very far forward.
What is a chopper motorcycle?
Chopper is a type of cruiser. The first chopper motorcycle was born in 1948 in California. The name "chopper" comes from the English. “chop”, which means to chop, i.e. deprive a finished motorcycle of certain parts, thereby changing its appearance and design. Due to the fact that each owner independently made a decision about what exactly to remove from the motorcycle, each chopper is unique and individual. Given this approach to the creation of motorcycle choppers, any mass-produced motorcycle cannot be called a chopper.
Chopper: history
Not very knowledgeable people nowadays call all motorcycles that differ from the classics this way, but this is incorrect. Chopper is an absolutely unique motorcycle. Yes, it may be modified, but it is not a sportbike or a cross-country bike. After World War II, American soldiers returning home began to miss speed. They wanted something new, so they invented the chopper after a lot of work. They started by tuning other motorcycles, and then they came up with the idea that they could create a completely unique model by making others lighter. This motorcycle owes its origin to crazy young people living in the USA. Nowadays, by removing all unnecessary parts from a motorcycle and making it a chopper, you can lighten its weight by about forty kilograms. This is very convenient, since the new transport will be very easy to use.
In the 1960s, after work on lightness and speed was carried out, showing off and nonconformity began among motorcycle owners. Everyone sought to express and emphasize the uniqueness of their iron horse in front of others. After much work on the appearance, speed and other components of the motorcycle, as mentioned above, the time has come for bright, unusual, stylish changes. First they changed the frame, and then everything else.
Chopper bikes
As mentioned above, choppers are unique motorcycles that have their own individuality and originality.
Due to this, they are quite popular among bikers. After all, it’s no secret that for a biker a motorcycle is a source of pride, part of his lifestyle, practically a member of the family. And therefore, among bikers, chopper bikes have earned great respect. In addition to the fact that the chopper is distinguished by its design, it also differs from many other bikes in its technical characteristics, which determine the clear goals of purchasing or independently producing a chopper.
First of all, a chopper bike is an excellent vehicle that is easy to use. Thanks to its low-speed, powerful engine and massive dimensions, this chopper bike is designed for leisurely riding along the highway over fairly long distances. In this regard, you can often see bikers riding choppers along the highway, moving from one settlement to another. After all, the entire design, consisting of a stepped saddle, forward footrests for the biker, soft suspension and a steering wheel located close to the person, makes riding a chopper bike comfortable and enjoyable. However, one should take into account the fact that this type of motorcycle is unlikely to be suitable as a main one. After all, taking into account all the characteristics, we can safely say that driving along the highway over long distances is the main purpose of a chopper bike, so in urban conditions this vehicle will be a bit cramped to move around.
Mini chopper - what is it and how is it different from a regular one?
As many have guessed, it differs from an ordinary chopper primarily in size. You can see the mini chopper in the photo below.
It has a certain privilege over an ordinary motorcycle: if its engine volume is less than 50 cubic centimeters, then a license is not needed, but if this volume is more than 50, then to drive such a motorcycle you need to get a category A license. An ordinary chopper has this the indicator is at least 400 cubic meters, so driving license is always required for it. Also a necessary step for owners of a rebuilt motorcycle is to pass traffic police standards. You must register after first having the vehicle assessed and declared fit for driving. After all these procedures, you need to obtain a diagnostic card and a compulsory motor liability insurance policy. That's it, the procedures are completed.
Chopper production
Today there are three directions in the production of choppers:
- Old school. Old-school choppers are distinguished by a rake steering column that remains virtually unchanged, a “horned” steering wheel, a teardrop-shaped gas tank, and a standard-sized rear wheel. These choppers can also be recognized by their rather specific coloring, representing geometric shapes and thin intersecting lines.
- Production of show stoppers. You won't go far on these bikes. This is not because they are not designed to be ridden due to their technical characteristics, but rather due to their style. After all, such choppers are made as objects that can attract attention and promote a company or an individual. Show-stoppers are usually presented at various exhibitions.
- Modern custom school. Such choppers can be recognized by the elongated base of the motorcycle, created by strongly tilting the steering column, which makes them unique in their own way. This school is also characterized by the absence of rear suspension, a narrow front wheel of large diameter along with a wide rear wheel.
It is worth noting that for many years, workshops have been operating and developing in Russia that manufacture choppers and other custom bikes. However, the bulk of custom builds are still born in the garages of amateurs. There are two reasons for this: the first is the peculiarities of motorcycle culture, and the second is explained by the high cost of parts and a large waste of time.
However, if you still want to have your own personal chopper bike, then you need to properly weigh all the pros and cons, determine the advisability of using it in certain conditions, taking into account all the characteristics and features.
Tips for choosing
When choosing a kitchen assistant, you should first decide for what purpose it is being purchased and how much free space there is to place it. The purpose and operating principle of a blender and a chopper are largely similar, but different designs, namely the location and shape of the knives, lead to different results. If you need to prepare a puree or liquid mass, you cannot do without a blender. The device is indispensable if there are small children in the house. The chopper will help you cut the product into uniform pieces of the required size - small, medium or large
It will ideally cope with preparing preparations for salads and frying. Sharp chopper knives make it easy to chop raw vegetables and meat, while blender knives are more delicate and can only handle cooked foods. The chopper has a compact size, which is especially important for small kitchens where there is always not enough space. A high-power device with a variety of attachments can replace a full-fledged food processor
Of course, its cost is higher than traditional devices. Both devices are easy to clean and can be easily washed under running water or in the dishwasher. The main thing is to remember to turn off the power after use, so as not to accidentally turn it on and get hurt. Despite all the differences, a chopper and a blender have the same capabilities - whipping cream, dough, crushing and mixing products of different hardness. Today there are many devices that combine the various functions of individual devices. Of course, the cost of such equipment is much higher, so it is worth thinking carefully about whether the existing capabilities are really needed so as not to overpay for nothing. If the choice in favor of a specific device has already been made, then you should pay attention to two main criteria for choosing a device - power and material of the product. For everyday use, the optimal power level is 500 W. As for the material, it is better to give preference to environmentally friendly, durable, low-maintenance materials - heat-resistant glass or high-quality plastic.

Choosing a chopper: which one is better?
Choppers are heavy, oversized motorcycles with a variety of chrome-plated components. Beginners often find it difficult to find a large assortment of all kinds of motorcycle equipment and cannot decide which chopper to choose, so it is worth considering the features of some models.
Signs of a regular chopper:
- chrome parts in large quantities;
- stepped saddle;
- trunks on the sides;
- soft suspension;
- teardrop-shaped gas tank;
- forward-mounted footrests;
- narrow front wheel with large diameter;
- The rear wheel is smaller in diameter and wide.
Such motorcycles are purchased by lovers of comfortable riding on highways outside the city. In the metropolis, bikes of this type are a bit cramped due to their large dimensions.
Characteristics taken into account when choosing a chopper
What should a novice motorcyclist consider when choosing his first bike? Consider the motorcycle from several parameters at once, such as quality, reliability, manufacturability and others.
Manufacturer
Classic models are produced by the American motorcycle company Harley Davidson, a leader and trendsetter in the chopper segment. Japanese manufacturers Yamaha, Honda and others compete with it. Motorcycle companies from the Land of the Rising Sun pay attention to the latest technologies, making their products reliable, durable, and safe.
Of course, it is better to choose a well-known manufacturer that has proven itself in this market segment.
Engine displacement
Choppers are very profitable in terms of efficiency and are also attractive in price. Models with a large engine capacity, 750–1100 cc, are often chosen.
The cheapest and most economical low-capacity motorcycles, this is the best option for beginners. If your financial capabilities are small, it is recommended to purchase a 400cc class motorcycle.
Please note: the more powerful the chopper, the larger its dimensions and, accordingly, its weight.
engine's type
The most popular are V-shaped 2-cylinder engines with liquid cooling and two overhead camshafts. To drive the rear wheel, the best option is a universal joint. Belt and chain drives are less preferred.
Inspection of a used chopper
Choppers are usually in good demand on the market. How to choose a good motorcycle that won’t force you to immediately spend a lot of money on restoring it? When purchasing, be sure to check the condition of the motorcycle, especially if you are purchasing used motorcycles:
- gearbox quality;
- oil condition;
- chain wear;
- compression (should be 0.8–1 MPa);
- no rust on the gas tank;
- no corrosion on the fork;
- carry out a test drive: accelerate the chopper to 100 km/h to check the power system - the engine should run without interruptions, if you hear them - the system is dirty;
- check the wear of the bearings; to do this, you need to hang the rear wheel, then swing the pendulum to the sides - there should be no knocking.
