Content:

The vagaries and failures in the Lada Granta engine depend on many reasons. One of them: the work - good or not - of the spark plugs. Therefore, the list of necessary checks should always include monitoring their condition. Faulty Lada Granta spark plugs will inevitably lead to unstable engine operation.

Clean or change

A very important question for Lada Granta owners: how often should the spark plugs be changed? According to the manufacturer's recommendations, this procedure should be done every 30 thousand km. But harsh practice shows that not all spare parts work for the allotted time. Premature replacement of Lada Granta spark plugs may be necessary if the following symptoms occur.

  • When starting the engine, the starter spins for a longer time.
  • While the engine is warming up or when driving in neutral, the engine makes strange sounds.
  • Fuel consumption has increased.
  • Engine power has dropped. This point is especially noticeable when trying to drive up a hill.
  • When you unscrew the spark plugs, you discover that they are wet from gasoline. After wiping, after several hours of movement, the candles become wet again.

Cleaning spark plugs

If you find carbon deposits on these parts, it is not at all necessary that you will need to replace the Lada Granta 16 or 8 valve spark plugs. In many cases, it is enough to clean the existing ones. Especially if the car has not covered very many kilometers since the last replacement. It all depends on the type of soot.

  1. Brown, gray-yellow coating with slight wear of the electrodes. Both the spark plug and the motor are in good working order.
  2. Black coating of a velvety structure with a touch of soot. Either late ignition or too rich air-fuel mixture. The air filter and DTOZh must be checked.
  3. Oily coating. Caused by lubricant entering the combustion chamber. Possible causes include: wear of valve stem seals, piston rings, and valve bushings.
  4. Red soot. Appears when there are anti-knock additives in the fuel. Or the exhaust gas neutralizer has failed.
  5. White soot. Low quality fuel was used or the ignition timing parameters were set incorrectly.
  6. Ash soot. Looks like a light brown crust. The cause of the problem may be the valve stem seals.

In cases 1, 2 and 5, the spark plugs can be cleaned and used further. In 3 and 4, replacement of spark plugs is required. In the latter, it is better to install new candles, but if this is not possible, you can temporarily use the old ones after cleaning.

To restore the functionality of the candles, you need to follow this algorithm.

  • Disconnect battery.
  • Remove the spark plugs.
  • Check the elements for the possibility of further use by analyzing the type of plaque on them.
  • Pour cleaning product into the container. You can use a disposable glass.
  • Dip candles into the composition and soak them in it for 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Rinse the elements under cool running water, and then treat with gasoline.
  • Use a brush or brush to remove any remaining dirt and wipe the spark plugs dry.
  • Check with a feeler gauge whether the remanufactured spark plug meets the requirements. Lada Granta gaps should be within the limits between 1 and 1.13 mm.
  • If necessary, adjust the gap of the Lada Granta spark plugs by bending the side electrode.
  • Install the restored candles in their proper place.

Replacement on 8-valve models

Before changing the spark plugs of a Lada Granta of any configuration, you should disconnect the battery, for which the negative terminal is removed from it. Next, we change the spark plugs on the Lada Granta in accordance with the following algorithm.

  • We dismantle the tips.
  • We clean the dust and dirt around the candles - foreign inclusions should not get into the wells.
  • Use a socket or a special 21 key to unscrew the elements.
  • We screw new spark plugs into their place. First by hand, then we tighten it with a key.
  • We return the tips to their place. If you have forgotten which of them corresponds to which element, check the numbering on the ignition coil.

Replacement on 16-valve models

If the engine on your Lada Granta is equipped with 16 valves, the process of replacing spark plugs will be somewhat more complicated. After de-energizing, proceed as follows.

  • We dismantle the decorative panel.
  • Press the latch without excessive zeal.
  • We turn off the ignition coils - this modification of the engine has a personal coil for each spark plug. To do this, use an E-6 asterisk to unscrew the bolts and remove the coils.
  • Using a 16mm spark plug wrench, unscrew the element to be removed and screw in the new one.
  • We put on the coil, tighten it and connect the wire plug.
  • All that remains is to put the lid back in place, and you’re done.

Established rules for replacing spark plugs on a Lada Vesta car

Scheduled maintenance on the 2180 includes replacement of igniters. The operating regulations for classic devices indicate the following update frequency: every 30 thousand km (15 thousand km with high mileage). And iridium and platinum ones need to be updated every 100 thousand km.

In addition, the condition of the engine may indicate the need for urgent replacement. If cracks appear on the ceramic part or the insulator has peeled off from the metal part, then it is time to replace the entire ignition system.

Spark plugs for Lada Granta: which ones to choose and how to change them

Before replacing spark plugs on a Lada Granta, you need to know some features of choosing new parts. For internal combustion engines with 8 valves, the manufacturer recommends installing spark plugs SZ A17DVRM or A15DVRM. For internal combustion engines with 16 valves, it is recommended to install spark plugs AU17DVRM or AU15DVRM.

If these spark plugs do not quite suit the car owner according to some criteria, you can choose an analogue:

  • spark plugs for Grant 8 valves - Beru 14R-7DU, Champion RN9YC, NGK BPR6ES, DENSO W20EPR.
  • spark plugs for Granta 16 valves - Beru 14FR-7DU, Champion RC9YC, NGK BCRP6ES, Denso Q20PR-U11.

Having selected spark plugs for the Lada Grant, you also need to take into account the features of replacing spark plugs on Grant cars with 8 and 16 valve internal combustion engines. Replacing the spark plugs itself is a fairly simple procedure, but there are some nuances. However, using the installation instructions and having the tools, it is quite possible to carry out the replacement yourself.

Replacing Grant spark plugs:

  • Having de-energized the on-board network on the 16-valve internal combustion engine, we remove the cover (there is no cover on the 8-valve engine);
  • in the case of a 16-valve engine, press the latch to turn off the ignition coil block (each spark plug has its own coil); in the case of an 8-valve engine, we skip this point;
  • Using an asterisk we unscrew the screws that secure the mounting locations of the coils for their subsequent dismantling;
  • for an 8-valve engine, we disconnect the high-voltage wires from the short circuit, remembering which wire goes to which spark plug;
  • depending on the specification of the internal combustion engine, use a key set to “21” or “16” to dismantle the faulty spark plugs and install new ones;
  • in the case of a 16-valve internal combustion engine, do not forget about installing and connecting the coil;
  • in the case of an 8-valve engine, new spark plugs must be installed and tightened by hand, and then tightened with a wrench;
  • Reinstall the high-voltage wires in the order in which they were originally.

Choosing spark plugs wisely

From the factory, “A17DVRM” spark plugs will be screwed into the 11183 engine. The same parts can be found in other engines: 11186, 21116.

Spark plugs for Lada Granta: when to change

Although the smooth operation of a car's internal combustion engine depends on many factors, the proper operation of the spark plugs has a strong impact on the power unit. With a “correct” and powerful spark, complete combustion of the fuel-air mixture occurs in the cylinders of the vehicle’s internal combustion engine, which significantly increases engine efficiency.

But, as practice shows, the service life of candles may be less than that established by regulations. In this case, the spark plugs are changed earlier, that is, before the scheduled maintenance is due.

The main signs for which the spark plugs of a Lada or other car are changed prematurely:

  • increased fuel consumption;
  • reduction in engine power;
  • the engine starts with difficulty or does not start at all;
  • the engine troits and runs unevenly;

In such a situation, the spark plugs on the Grant should be unscrewed for inspection. If they turn out to be wet from fuel or covered with carbon deposits, and an attempt to bring them into working condition does not yield results after wiping them dry, this also often indicates that the spark plugs need to be changed (provided that the engine is otherwise in good condition).

How to adjust the gap?

Performing maintenance involves cleaning the electrodes from accumulated carbon deposits and adjusting the gap. This parameter should not be allowed to exceed the manufacturer’s permissible requirements. The process of the spark plug involves reducing the height of the central electrode with the simultaneous formation of a rounded depression on the inner sphere. This implies an increase in the gap, the value of which is subject to adjustment. It is set using probes and corresponds to the limits of 1.0 - 1.5 mm. If the gap is set correctly, the probe will penetrate between the electrodes with a noticeable tension.
