The consequences of driving a Lada Priora for a long time with faulty spark plugs can be disastrous, because, in addition to loss of power, some of the unburned fuel dilutes the engine oil, which harms engine parts. Then, in the form of vapors through the crankcase ventilation system, it again enters the cylinders, supersaturates the combustible mixture, which again does not completely burn on faulty spark plugs and ends up in the oil.

The permissible limits of the interelectrode distance are from 0.6 to 1.2 mm. A more precise value is selected depending on the type of engine, power supply and ignition system:

  • old-type carburetor engines with a low compression ratio and a mechanical spark generation system - 0.6–0.7 mm;
  • the same engines equipped with non-contact electronic ignition – 0.8–0.9 mm;
  • in turbocharged and naturally aspirated power units with fuel supplied by injection (injector), the gap on the spark plugs should be from 1 to 1.2 mm.

Advice. The best way to correctly determine the interelectrode clearance for a particular vehicle is to carefully study the operating instructions. In the vast majority of cases, this value is indicated among other setting parameters.

Since the owners of many vehicles equipped with gasoline engines switch to liquefied gas, the size of the spark plug gap requires adjustment. For high-quality combustion of a mixture of propane and air, it is recommended to increase the ignition intensity by increasing the clearance by 0.1 mm from the rated value. The load on the high-voltage coil will increase slightly, and the gas will burn better.

If there are traces of oil, you should pay attention to the oil reflective caps. As a result, you will notice higher lubricant consumption.

If the valve is destroyed, you will see oil stains, gasoline residues and dark deposits on the spark plugs. In addition, it will contain small iron particles. As we already said in the last paragraph, the transition to a multi-electrode circuit did not bring much practical benefit in increasing the service life of spark plugs. In fact, the fight against the very cause of natural wear of spark plugs, that is, erosion of contacts, was replaced with a palliative - the substitution of “spare” ones. To increase the immediate reliability of the electrodes, the design of the spark plugs was significantly redesigned.

In “platinum” and “iridium” spark plugs, the main feature that catches the eye is a very thin central electrode, which precisely localizes the point of origin of the spark - opposite it, a plaque of the corresponding metal is soldered on the side electrode, and the central electrode is also covered with it.

The advantages of such candles are obvious: the electrodes have a service life that, under normal conditions, is two to three times longer than that of conventional candles. The thin central electrode is perfectly self-cleaning, which also contributes to reliable operation.

The disadvantages, alas, are also significant. The first is the price: a set with the Platinum or Iridium inscription will cost at least two to three times more than regular candles. The second, oddly enough, is tenderness: non-fading carbon deposits instantly kill such candles, and mechanical cleaning is contraindicated for them, just like the old-fashioned burning with a torch. First of all, we are, of course, talking about the notorious ferrocene, which is still not uncommon to encounter.

Carbon deposits on spark plugs can indicate any malfunction, including incorrect adjustment of the fuel mixture. You can find out why the candles are black. During normal engine operation in compliance with all operating rules and regulations, the spark plug electrodes will have a light brown color. Carbon deposits can be found, but in very small quantities the same applies to deposits. In any case, the fuel is often dirty, with impurities that are not completely burned and remain on the walls of the combustion chamber and on the spark plugs.
