How to make air suspension with your own hands for Gazelle and VAZ

Air suspension is a modern type of suspension that allows you to manually control the level of the body relative to the road. This system differs from the usual one by the presence of elastic elements. It is not included in the basic equipment of budget vehicles, such as Priors, but can be installed as an additional option.

The main advantages include such qualities as: convenience, safety, increased cross-country ability. The average cost for installing an air suspension on a Priora in the Russian Federation is 80,000 rubles .

Air suspension for VAZ. Advantages of this suspension

VAZ suspension tuning

Air suspension on the VAZ has become a very popular additional option installed on the car among owners - tuners of cars from the domestic auto industry.
What is air suspension? Air suspension is a device installed on a car, which is designed to compensate for excess load on the car's standard suspension. Usually they are air springs that are installed between the axle and the frame. Using it you can reduce the load on the springs and increase the ground clearance of the car, which is very important when driving off-road

Air suspension - why do you need to install it?

It will give you at least five important advantages over other cars:

  1. Adaptability. This advantage of air suspension will make it possible to adjust the stiffness, ground clearance and maximum axle load. Replacing standard springs with lower ones does not always give the desired result. Pneumatic cylinders provide a much wider range of optimal settings.
  2. Controllability. A special feature of air suspension is that the more the air cylinders are compressed, the higher the rigidity becomes. If you need to improve the car's handling, then sports shock absorbers and rigid anti-roll bars are additionally installed.

  1. Customizable. Every motorist has his own opinion on how a car should drive and handle. For its implementation, the air suspension on the VAZ is just right, because the installation will not require replacing any suspension parts. By changing the pressure in the system, you can achieve a softer or stiffer suspension.
  2. Individuality. The main advantage of the air suspension on the VAZ is the ability to effectively change the ground clearance on a very wide scale. You can lower the vehicle's ground clearance as much as possible from inside, like a sports car, or adjust it to the middle position or raise it to the maximum.

According to many, air suspension is designed for lowriders, but in fact it is installed to quickly change the vehicle's ground clearance, without compromising handling and reliability. And no matter how much the car costs, air suspension allows you to effectively overcome a speed bump, park on a curb, drive into a country house, drive through a snowdrift in winter or off-road in summer without much difficulty, of course, if the tires are not “bald”.

  1. Practicality. The air suspension on your VAZ will allow you to load the car “to the top” without compromising the comfort and safety of the car’s passengers and others. Very often, “pneumatics” are installed on minibuses and light trucks for transporting large loads.

As you can see, all these advantages allow the use of air suspension over a wide range of action. Air suspension will make your car more comfortable and safer, improve handling and movement on snowdrifts and rough roads, and improve its appearance.

If you have a pneumatic system on your car, you can use compressed air for various purposes: inflate tires, install doors like a Lamborghini, install a pneumatic horn or a pneumatic trunk lid. It is recommended to install air suspension at specialized stations for your own safety and the safety of others.

Advantages and disadvantages of air suspension

By installing the suspension on air springs, you can get a number of obvious advantages:

  1. Ability to change ground clearance. You can increase or decrease the ride height without replacing springs and shock absorbers. Setting the required clearance will take no more than a few minutes.
  2. Smooth ride on roads with poor or no surface. Spring shock absorbers are sensitive to off-road conditions, and this is their main drawback. Maximum attention is required from the driver when driving on uneven roads. The air suspension compensates for the slightest vibrations - shaking and vibration of the car are reduced to zero.
  3. Convenience and comfort of control. Typically, springs of different stiffnesses are installed on cars. Hard ones are suitable for roads with even surfaces, soft ones for off-road conditions. Air suspension combines the advantages of springs and eliminates their disadvantages.

The pluses include the fact that the car does not “sag.” The compressed air system does not allow the car to “sag”, even if it is loaded to the maximum. The ground clearance can be easily adjusted to the desired height.

Car enthusiasts are scared off primarily not by the complexity of installation, but by the high cost. Air suspension equipment is expensive. Also, any of the elements of the system cannot be restored; if there is a malfunction, the entire assembly will have to be replaced.

The next problem is sensitivity to chemicals on the roads. Products used to treat road surfaces in winter can lead to a significant reduction in the service life of the system. If during frosts you can pour alcohol into the air bags, then only expensive original equipment will save you from the reagents. The disadvantages also include the complexity of installation. Without tools, knowledge and skills, it is not recommended to begin installing a complex suspension system on air springs.

If you are thinking about buying a set of equipment and upgrading the suspension by making it pneumatic with your own hands, you should think about the components of the set.

Ready-made kits are now available for sale. Their price ranges from 20 thousand rubles and above. If you want to install pneumatics on both axles, giving the car to specialists, you will have to pay at least 40 thousand rubles. This applies to AvtoVAZ products, such as:

  • VAZ 2101;
  • 2106;
  • 2107;
  • VAZ 2109;
  • 2110;
  • 2114;
  • VAZ 2115;
  • Priora;
  • Kalina, etc.

Both domestic classics and more modern models of the Russian automobile industry are suitable for creating a miracle on wheels with air suspension.

Do you think it is possible to install such a system with your own hands? I'm sure it is possible. It’s not for nothing that even ordinary car enthusiasts everywhere offer their services for installing a pneumatic kit. They do not work at a service station, but simply install equipment in their garage. And if they could do it, then you will succeed too.

There are even special videos where drivers show how and in what sequence the pneumatic kit is mounted. The question is different. Do you need this?! This is worth thinking about carefully.

What is this?

The installation of air suspension refers to the installation of a device in which air bags are installed instead of conventional springs and shock absorbers.
The system consists of cylinders, an electronic control device, and compressor equipment. Valves regulate pressure and prevent it from rising above normal. The suspension is being replaced at auto service centers. Air suspension may be required in the following cases:

  • It is necessary to increase the carrying capacity and practicality of the car.
  • I would like to get a more controllable car.
  • It is necessary to reduce the cost of repairing the factory suspension.
  • We need to make driving in a car more comfortable.
  • I would like to customize the suspension according to individual parameters.

To install air suspension, the car owner should do a number of the following:

  1. Find a car service that provides services of a similar nature.
  2. Call the administrator, find out the terms of cooperation, the price of the work.
  3. Visit a service station and provide the car to specialists.
  4. Wait for the job to complete.
  5. Check the serviceability of the suspension.
  6. Pay the master's work.
  7. Receive a warranty certificate.

On average, installation of an additional air suspension lasts from 3 hours to a day. It all depends on the model of the machine and the complexity of the work.

TOP 10 Lithuanian automotive sites for searching cars and spare parts

How to do tuning VAZ-2104 with your own hands

Buying cars in Europe is much more profitable than on the domestic Russian market, even taking into account all the fabulous fees and taxes. For comparison, a BMW 5 Series produced in 2004-2006 can be purchased in Lithuania for 6-8 thousand euros. In Russia, such a copy will cost 23-25 thousand, and even the condition of the Russian car will be much worse.

Bad roads, low-quality fuel, savings on maintenance – there are many factors that lead cars in Russia to a ruined state. Therefore, many are looking towards the Baltic states in order to purchase a higher quality and reliable car, while spending much less money.

The most popular Lithuanian sites for searching cars

What should you not forget when choosing a car in Lithuania?

As soon as you find a car that meets your requirements, you should resist the temptation to immediately start packing for your trip to Lithuania. First, find a customs duties calculator and calculate how much money you will have to pay to the state. Perhaps it’s worth looking for a more profitable purchase option?

The following points can make a car from Lithuania unprofitable:

  • the car is too old (for old vehicles you will have to pay a lot during customs clearance);
  • large engine capacity (the duty is calculated based on the number of cubic centimeters);
  • overpriced car in Lithuania.

To begin with, it is worth including in the final cost of your future car travel and accommodation in the Baltics, customs duties, recycling fees, and the cost of transporting the car to Russia. If you end up with a good figure, then you should go to Lithuania to inspect the car or order it from professional companies.

Let's sum it up

To buy good transport in Lithuania, it is enough to study several sites, compare the cost of a particular car model on different portals. As soon as you make your choice, immediately calculate the final amount using a customs calculator.

Happy shopping in the Baltics!

Key Benefits

How to make anti-rain with your own hands

At first I was surprised why so many owners of domestic cars that fall into the classic category are looking for an air suspension kit.

But when I began to delve into this issue, I discovered serious arguments in favor of such a change in the suspension design. If I had an old VAZ, maybe I would decide to install pneumatics on it myself.

Historically, the authors of this idea when organizing suspension were the French. And to be even more precise, representatives of the car company Citroen. They were the first to use air suspension on cars. And for good reason, because it provides a number of advantages.

  • Comfort. Pneumatics can significantly affect the level of comfort in a car, and in a good way. Such solutions help achieve an optimal balance between rigidity and comfort. Classic shock absorbers are not capable of this;
  • Ground clearance. Exhibition cars only compete to go lower and go higher. But let's talk about real operating conditions. Pneumatics allow you to change the current vehicle clearance at your discretion. This way you can relate the clearance to the degree of load of the machine. The more cargo, the higher the car rises. But it is also useful to lower the car when entering the highway. This lowers the center of gravity, allowing the car to stay on the road better;
  • Overload resistance. By adjusting the suspension, the driver, if necessary, can load the car as much as possible, but without fear of possible damage to the chassis, or any significant changes in the behavior of the car on the road.

This is just a small part of the benefits. There are many more of them that can be identified

But we won’t focus too much on this.

Preparing for installation

Before proceeding with the installation of the air suspension system, the following items should be prepared:

  • compressor model Falcon 870;
  • 13 fittings;
  • 4 solenoid valves;
  • 2 pressure gauges;
  • 12 tubes with a diameter of 6mm, made of plastic;
  • 2 buttons;
  • relay;
  • wire and terminals;
  • front and rear air struts;
  • 2 flexible hoses with a metallized sheath;
  • 2 rubber hoses with metric M10 thread.

In our case, the Falcon 870 compressor was chosen. It is cheaper than the popular Berkut R20, but very reliable, as practice shows.

This device underwent some modifications before installation. Since the compressor is installed permanently, there is no need for a special carrying handle. Therefore, it is removed. Next, a fitting is installed in the housing, through which air will be supplied through a plastic tube. In addition, the bottom surface of the compressor should be abandoned.

Pros and cons of air suspension. How good is it and is it worth installing?

  • The maintainability of the air suspension is 0. Whatever component fails, it can only be replaced; it cannot be restored. Considering their cost, you begin to value travel comfort much less. And if you add the price of the work being carried out to the price of spare parts, the thought inevitably creeps in that our roads are not so bad, and a conventional suspension is quite capable of coping with them;
  • The frost resistance of the air suspension is very low. Even temperatures slightly below 0 have an extremely negative effect on it, which brings us back to point 1;
  • The air suspension is absolutely not friendly with the indispensable companion of winter in a metropolis - road reagents. The consequences of their interaction again return us to the need to spend money according to point 1.
