2015 Ski-Doo 800 Summit X 174 T3 Snowmobile Review

BRP Ski-Doo Skandic SWT V-800 4-TEC is a universal utilitarian class snowmobile, endowed with unique parameters. This machine is characterized by high fuel efficiency, high traction force and excellent handling. The device was developed in the design bureau of BRP - a Canadian developer of snowmobiles, which is considered one of the best manufacturers of such special equipment. The products of the Canadian brand have always stood out for their high quality workmanship and reliability. The model in question is suitable for lovers of extreme walks and long journeys, and will also be an ideal solution for fishing and hunting needs. The Skido Scandic SVT BRP is a very productive device that balances all the most important qualities necessary for comfortable and uninterrupted operation in harsh climatic conditions - for example, in the northern regions of Russia. Let's pay attention to the special geometry of the driver's seat - this feature provides a comfortable position for the operator so that he can stretch his legs and they will not become numb during a long trip. The center of gravity is located under the seat, and the seat itself is shifted to the front. This arrangement has a beneficial effect on the endurance of the driver, who gets less tired and can cover long routes. In addition, the use of such a platform reduced the weight of the snowmobile by 15 percent.

The Skido Scandic SVT BRP is a modern machine based on the technologically advanced REV-XU platform. This chassis is characterized by high dynamism and strength characteristics. Thanks to the aluminum frame, it was possible not only to reduce the weight of the snowmobile, but also to make handling more understandable and informative. The driver will not have to guess in which position the skis are turned, which is very important when performing maneuvers in difficult to reach areas - for example, in the wilderness or when making a turn. In the basic configuration, the car is a two-seater, but the multifunctional modular seat can be made into a single seat by quickly removing the rear passenger seat. By the way, each seat has a backrest. The seat height is adjustable and allows you to ride sitting or standing.

Main features of the snowmobile:

  1. Customizable steering wheel with adjustments for a specific driver, based on his height and build
  2. Unique SC-5U rear suspension with a sporty-utilitarian component. This chassis is designed specifically for sports snowmobiles. It is suitable for overcoming the most difficult areas, including snowy and icy roads, as well as deep snowdrifts.
  3. The front suspension is of a telescopic type, abbreviated as LTS. You can reveal the capabilities of this suspension in deep snow, as well as on rough terrain.
  4. To increase cross-country ability and directional stability, the snowmobile is equipped with a wide track.
  5. Halogen headlights are installed at the front and rear, improving visibility and visibility at night, as well as in bad weather (blizzard, blizzard, etc.)
  6. Digital instrument panel, which displays various information - speed readings, engine speed, current mileage and other parameters.
  7. Synchromesh gearbox, adapted to any load. The gearbox has two forward and one reverse speeds, which ensure smooth operation regardless of weather and road conditions, as well as road factors.
  8. Narrow skis Pilot DS2, the peculiarity of which lies in their thin and tapered structure. Despite this shape, the skis are highly durable and resistant to all kinds of damage and deformation. In addition, thanks to these skis, it was possible to improve cross-country ability and maneuverability, including due to lower gearing.
  9. The high windshield provides protection from headwinds or snow hitting the driver's face.

BRP Skido Scandic SVT is a multifunctional snowmobile that can compare with the capabilities of a reliable off-road vehicle, ready to conquer any peaks. The device is relatively stable and safe on any road or off-road surface. It can be used for recreation and hunting, as well as other strenuous work.

“Almost anywhere on our planet you can find your own, original sport, unique only to this particular climate zone. For example, skiing and snowboarding - in the north, surfing and sport diving - in the southern latitudes... And snowmobile cross-country as one of the technical disciplines inherent in countries where winter lasts longer than a few months with little snow. But, to my deep regret, in our largely northern country it is still more of an exotic and rare curiosity than a full-fledged and mass sport.

No, of course, the racing teams of Novy Urengoy have long and monopoly occupied all the prize places in the Russian Championship standings, but, unfortunately, Russian athletes are still far from achieving the success of the legendary Tucker Hibbert. And the point here is not only the lack of funding and government support - there are many factors influencing the degradation of this spectacular and dynamic sport. There are not enough specially equipped tracks and youth sports clubs, there is almost no media coverage of racing, and the legendary relatively inexpensive “training desks” MXZ 440 LC Racing X or 440 IQ Racer have disappeared from the Ski Doo and Polaris lineup. But a lot of machines have appeared on the market, ready for amateur use right out of the box. After all, for the average cross-country or enduro fan, the powerful and “evil” standard “shorty” is enough, as they say, for the eyes. And snowmobiles such as the Lynx Rave RE 800 E-TEC can plunge even a seriously trained professional into a serious catatonic stupor with their exorbitant technical characteristics. This car is built on the Rex2 platform, based on the already legendary racing Rave RS 600. The engine is a standard BRP 2-stroke 2-cylinder Rotax 800R E-TEC with a displacement of 799.5 cm3 and a power of about 163 hp. With. The compact and powerful engine also has outstanding fuel efficiency, consuming only 11.2 liters per 100 km.

The lightweight and durable snowmobile chassis is equipped with a front wishbone suspension with KYB 40 HLCR shock absorbers with 242 mm of travel. The rear suspension, traditionally for Lynx, is the PPS system, which was developed by the famous Finnish racer Pauli Pippola. Its main advantage over competitors is not only its amazing strength and reliability - it allows you to distribute the weight of the snowmobile as correctly as possible and achieve full adhesion of the track to the surface, regardless of the load on the machine. The PPS-3300 is equipped with KYB 46 HLCR shock absorbers with a stroke of 390 mm. All of them, of course, are equipped with remote compensation chambers. The Rave RE 800R E-TEC is equipped with a new track with a 44 mm toe and Blade skis, underrated by domestic riders. First of all, road tests of the snowmobile proved that BRP still has everything in order with 2-stroke technologies. Still, it’s not for nothing that the Rotax E-Tec is still the reason for the envious glances of many colleagues in the workshop. The engine, needless to say, is magnificent! It is controlled in the lower and middle speed ranges and... wild and unbridled when the throttle trigger is fully squeezed. The power plant is so good that its tuning is rather the lot of athletes in the top ten of the Snowmobile Cross World Championship. But on the move, the 800cc RAVE is very specific: a kind of traditional Canadian sports car, but with a special Finnish flavor.

The car’s suspensions work quite well, “eating” both small “beating” and large and high “waves”. The snowmobile also boasts stable behavior in the air during jumps. And even some of its clumsiness is compensated by the reliability and downright northern “confection” of the frame and suspension elements. But both on broken and compacted trails, the excess weight of 233 kg, unfortunately, is felt even by an inexperienced rider. Especially in comparison with its Canadian “relative”, the Ski-Doo MXZ X-RS model, which weighs significantly less - 208 kg. I hasten to disappoint those who want to see a universal weekend car in the form of the Rave RE 800 E-TEC. This is a very specialized and highly targeted device. The short track and powerful engine are unlikely to allow the snowmobile to be used anywhere other than prepared trails or selective enduro routes. Yes, and it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to race in professional cross-country on this device either - for serious sporting events, the BRP production range already has a magnificent Rave RS 600, proven by protracted cross-country battles. I’m afraid of being laughed at by experienced and fearless domestic snowmobile riders, but, in my opinion In my opinion, the destiny of the Rave RE 800 E-TEC is, rather, grips on broken snowmobile trails, amateur cross-country racing and country racing on low-snow “crossroads”.

Artem Chernyavin

22 years old, in snowmobiling since 2005. 7th place at the Russian Championship in the youth class, 2005, Silver medalist of the Russian Championship in the youth class, 2006, Bronze medalist of the Russian Championship in the youth class, 2007, Silver medalist of the Russian Championship, champion of the Ural Federal District, 2008, Silver medalist Cup of Russia, silver medalist of the Urals Federal District, winner of the Russian Championship, 1st place at the All-Russian competition “Race of Stars”, 2009, Bronze medalist of the Russian Championship, bronze medalist of the All-Russian competition “Race of Stars”, 2010, Silver medalist of the Russian Cup in the junior class, 2011 year, Silver medalist of the second stage of the Russian championship in snowmobile cross, winner of the 2nd stage of the Russian championship in enduro-cross on snowmobiles, bronze medalist of the Russian championship in cross-country and enduro-cross on snowmobiles in the junior class, 2011, Silver medalist 1- 1st stage of the Russian Championship, winner of the 2nd stage of the Russian Championship in the junior class, 2012

When I was just a child, my parents and I went every winter to watch snowmobile races that took place in my hometown of Novy Urengoy. That's when I fell in love with this beautiful form of extreme sport. The riders were real stars for me, and the competition itself was something completely incredible. When I watched the award ceremony and the guys who stood on the podium, I often dreamed that someday I would be among them. And now, a few years later, my dream came true. In 2005, I was brought to the team of STK Fakel, and in the same year I got on a snowmobile for the first time - it became a Ski-Doo MXZ 550. But after some time, before my first Russian championship, the team received new snowmobiles, and my own I rode the first stage at the CR on a Lynx Rave 550. On the Lynx my results immediately improved, since, in my opinion, it was more suitable for cross-country than the MXZ. And already in 2005 I managed to take 7th place in the individual competition of the Russian Championship. In my second Russian Championship, I also competed on a Lynx Rave 550. To be honest, at first I didn’t like the new car. Probably due to the fact that I was very used to my MXZ 550. But after a few training sessions, it seemed that I managed to “get the hang of” the Rave 550, and at the first races I began to show good results in its class. Soon I started winning races and became the winner of the Ural Federal District championship and the Russian championship in the junior class. Since then, I have participated in the Russian championship only on Lynx snowmobiles, and only in 2011 I had to race a Ski-Doo MXZ 600 RS in several stages of the championship. But already in 2012, I switched to Lynx again, to the Rave RS 600 model. From that time to the present day, for me it remains the most suitable model for snowmobile cross, and I am unlikely to change my opinion.

Why I like the Lynx cross-country equipment: / First of all, it is an excellent PPS suspension, which works well on bumps and when jumping. At the moment, I don’t see an alternative for Russian conditions. Many who compete in cross-country skiing on other brands of snowmobiles install PPS suspension on their cars, as it really gives them an advantage over their competitors. / This snowmobile comes stock with fairly strong and wide Powder Pro skis, which can be used quite well at Russian championships. On other models (for example, Ski-Doo, Polaris, etc.) the skis are much weaker, so they are usually replaced immediately. / This snowmobile, unlike its competitors, has a narrow and comfortable seat, which allows you to feel comfortable when riding while standing and allows you to hug the seat with your legs without any discomfort. / Rotax motors. There’s no need to talk much about them - the whole world knows that BRP snowmobiles have the most reliable engines. / Cool design. / All BRP cross-country models are equipped directly from the factory with fairly good KYB shock absorbers with thick springs, which are quite suitable for racing. I believe that the Lynx Rave RS 600 is the most suitable snowmobile for professional racing today. And I would confidently recommend it to anyone who is thinking about buying a cross-country snowmobile. For those who do not plan to take prizes in the “point zones” of championships at various levels, the universal athletes Rave RE 600 HO E-TEC and Rave RE 800 E-TEC are quite suitable for amateur and semi-professional use.

In cross-country, I'm probably most attracted to jumping. This is perhaps the most terrible and psychologically difficult element for all athletes. And I'm no exception. Moreover, on each track they are different, and with each lap the departures and landings change. That is why you need to improve your piloting technique as much as possible. You must always remember that on the track you have no time to rest. You have to give your best, and this takes a lot of energy. We say: “Rest while you fly!” The higher the flight, the more time to rest.” And indeed it is! I get maximum pleasure from good, competent jumps. Of course, racing is a lot of work. To achieve good results, you must have a strong-willed character. Every race is a test of your capabilities: can you get up after falling? Will you be able to pull yourself together and overtake everyone after a bad start? All this can only be learned during the race. Every time you improve your capabilities, test yourself, take risks, fight fear. And if you overcome all this, only then will you show good results and begin to truly enjoy the races. That's what I love about racing. /

Engine

The Skido Scandic V800 4-TEC snowmobile is equipped with an updated gasoline engine with a displacement of 800 cc. cm. Engine power is 65 horsepower. An EFI fuel injection system replaces the legacy carburetor system. Its advantages include better fuel efficiency with more power, as well as high environmental friendliness and compliance with modern standards. The modern four-stroke layout also helps reduce gasoline consumption. The ventilation system is liquid cooling, which prevents overheating of internal combustion engine components at relatively high ambient temperatures.

The weight of the structure is distributed along the entire length of the machine, and this has improved directional stability, which is especially important when cornering. In addition, especially for this purpose, the machine is equipped with long tracks that overcome all road irregularities well and allow you to climb and descend any slopes and off-road areas. This could also include ice space. In terms of its driving performance, the snowmobile of the same name is not inferior to more famous and expensive cars. Let us note another important feature - a gearbox with a low gear ratio to simplify the transportation of cargo containers in harsh conditions.

Structural strength is enhanced by a one-piece chassis and spot-welded frame. Thanks to this chassis, it became possible to install a narrowed seat. Thus, it was possible to maintain a natural position while driving. The presence of heated steering wheel and seat functions had a beneficial effect on comfort and ease of use. It is noteworthy that inside the base seat there is a spacious compartment for storing documents, things, accessories and other important items. As an option, you can install a passenger seat, which can be easily removed.

Particularly noteworthy are the new skis with Blade XC blades, which provide ideal grip properties. In this way, it was possible to eliminate slipping and slipping when cornering. The result is improved handling and stability. By the way, the snowmobile’s chassis was modified by specialists from the Finnish division of BRP. The overall weight of the ski is reduced by 2.2 kg compared to standard Blade skis. The high windshield is borrowed from its predecessor.

Basic equipment elements:

  1. Metal steering wheel with handles
  2. Driver's handrail
  3. Electric starter
  4. Towbar
  5. Rearview mirror
  6. Heated steering wheel function
  7. Digital instrument panel.

Reviews

  • Georgy, Saratov. The car was purchased two years ago on the secondary market, in good condition. Despite the supported version, the snowmobile looks and behaves like new. Apparently it was really rarely used. Gasoline consumption is about 15-17 liters per 100 km. Can be filled with cheap 92-grade fuel. The car handles well and behaves predictably in corners. In general, it is unpretentious in maintenance and quite fast, despite only 60 horses under the hood. Since 2021 I have been using it for 8-9 months a year. The device confidently tows a loaded sled.
  • Nikolay, Belgorod. Ease of control and low cost are the main advantages for which I purchased the BRP Skido Scandic SVT snowmobile. The car is inexpensive, and at the same time has good acceleration and traction characteristics. It is clear that this snowmobile is in many ways inferior to older BRP models, for example in terms of power. Gasoline consumption is at the level of 14 liters, so you can cover significant distances without refueling. In terms of cross-country ability, the car was not a success, as it quickly sits on its belly in deep snow. But along the well-trodden road, the device reveals itself to its full potential. I don’t plan to change the snowmobile yet, as it has an excellent ratio of quality, price and handling. So what if I have to buy original components, but I have confidence that the Scandic will serve me as long as possible.
  • Igor, Pyatigorsk. My snowmobile will soon be three years old. This is my first such device. I decided to take a car from a well-known brand so that later there would be no problems with reliability. And I even spat on the weak engine, in which I was later disappointed. The snowmobile does not carry a heavy load at all; it drives lazily. There is no feeling of dynamics at all, and the engine doesn’t even run at all its 60 horsepower, but as if it were 30 horses, no more. The device slowly picks up speed, and at the same time consumes up to 20 liters per 100 km/h - this is at high speeds. During the first three seasons there were no breakdowns, but then some interruptions began with the electric starter, and I had to start it manually. The plastic skis cracked when I accidentally hit a big rock. The rear carriage is quite weak. In general, if you have to repair something, it is advisable to immediately contact a service center, since a snowmobile is very labor-intensive to maintain. It does not inspire any confidence, including due to expensive service repairs. For example, replacing just one windshield on Scandic costs 35 thousand rubles.
  • Maxim, Leningrad region. The snowmobile came in handy for fishing and hunting needs. The device was recommended to me by friends who are also keen on hunting. I've been using it for two months. The used car so far satisfies all my needs, no matter where I am. The maximum speed is 80 km/h – that’s enough for me. The suspension is impenetrable, you don’t have to worry about overcoming various obstacles, deep snowdrifts, etc. I will note the comfortable seating position and the ability to raise the seat and steering wheel so that you can ride while standing. Due to the soft suspension, the snowmobile sometimes seems clumsy and unable to maneuver quickly. But the car smooths out all the bumps and allows you to move quietly and comfortably through the forest.

Owner reviews

  • Kevin: I purchased the BRP Lynx Yeti Pro Army V-800 at the beginning of the year. I only managed to ride it a few times. I liked that the engine is very quiet in all modes and speeds, while the torque and dynamics always remain at the same level, regardless of the number of cargo and passengers (even three of us rode on a snowflake). The device does not feel the load, and the suspension does not show any signs of breaking when fully loaded. Consumption is less than 15 liters per 100 km, which is very good. At a temperature of -30 degrees, the snowmobile started up the first time. I didn’t find any downsides to the technology, except for one thing – the price. The conclusion about the Yeti Pro Army V-800 is this: if you have the money, then you should buy this device.
  • Fedor, Kazan: Any extreme and powerful technique is not a cheap pleasure. When I was choosing a snowmobile for myself, I thought for quite a long time. I was sorry for the money, but still decided to buy the BRP Lynx Yeti Pro Army V-800. I bought a used model, so I managed to save a little money. The device is suitable if you need to carry a sled with a large load. In deep snow, he carried me with my brother and a sled with 200 kg of luggage without strain. There were cases when the device failed (due to the large mass and high center of gravity), but this did not happen often. I was pleased with the consumption - approximately 12.2 liters per hundred. In terms of reliability and efficiency, I have not yet seen a better Yeti Pro Army V-800.
  • Konstantin, Krasnoyarsk: I bought the BRP Lynx Yeti Pro Army V-800 last year and immediately started using it. I really liked the snowmobile during the run-in, but when I move at high speed, vibration is felt. It’s still unclear where it came from; I haven’t contacted the service. The fan also turns on frequently, the overheating light has never come on. The steering of the snowmobile is very comfortable, but heavy. At first my hands were very tired, but then I got used to it. In terms of stability, there are questions, I almost knocked over the equipment 2 times. I like the traction in low gear, the device carries absolutely any load. The trunk is huge. I'm happy with the snowmobile.
  • Valentin_1992: In less than two winters I drove almost 7,000 km on the Army Yeti. In terms of fuel consumption, everything is fine. Even when fully loaded, it comes out to no more than 20-24 l/100 km. A snowmobile has its pros and cons. In cold weather the engine starts perfectly (even at -42 degrees). The cross-country ability is quite good, the snowflake itself is a real “workhorse” that can be used every day. The device is a bit heavy, they say there are problems with the engine, but so far these shortcomings do not particularly bother me.
