Royal "troika": review of Triumph Street Triple 765 RS

Semantics

After all, time is a completely ruthless instrument that rarely benefits anyone: the cynical biological clock unemotionally measures the period of stay on this planet allotted to everyone by fate.
In most cases, over the years you do not become healthier, more resilient, stronger, slimmer (add to the list), all these are just pathetic maxims - that is, reflections and manifestations of human self-pity. Exceptions are Chuck Norris, cognac and wine. That is why the Speed Triple, as ancient as a hundred Egyptian pyramids, even in its latest iteration, does not produce more than 140 hp with a 1050 cm3 displacement per 211 kilograms of curb weight, while the noticeably more recent StreetTriple produces 123 hp. with 765 “cubes”, and there is also only 183 kilograms of curb weight: 28 kilograms minus is a weighty argument in every sense! But it’s not only and not so much about numbers, but about sensations. Say, 50 kilograms for a girl is a good indicator?

Yes, provided that you are not an ardent fan of anorexia, but if we are talking about a first-grader, then this is already too much... The same is the case with StreetTriple: 123 hp. – not the most lethal indicator by modern standards. But here all the “horses” are very competently “scattered” throughout the entire speed range, and after 8000 rpm they explode in a real unbridled herd - no gentlemanly preferences, refined manners and other Oxford intelligence - the engine output is rather more correctly compared with British football fans after the defeat of their beloved teams.

Showa's fully adjustable inverter has one drawback: it doesn't have the magic Ohlins name that removes at least 3 seconds from your lap time. In reality, you are unlikely to feel any discomfort.

A “Christmas tree” with a full range of adjustments for everything cannot by definition be the subject of criticism. If you are not satisfied with something about her, consult a psychiatrist.

True, unlike the island ultras, here the engineers did an excellent “educational” job: 5 engine operating modes, an electronic throttle grip, a tuned chassis with a “gypsy” set: Ohlins in the rear, but Showa in the front, monoblock Brembo, “evil” » rake – that is, the angle of the steering column and the “advanced” position of the pilot ultimately create one of the most delicious “cocktails” on the market called the “mid-sized three-cylinder naked”. Spicy. With exquisite taste. British. As often happens in life, good makeup can sometimes lead to surprises.

Here I mean that on the test we had the most stuffed version - RS, hence all the most delicious, including the laptimer and quickshifter, although it was one-sided and seemed to me somewhat rough in operation. The R version has already been noticeably trimmed by marketers: the suspension is only Showa, minus one engine operating mode (Track), the engine has been deprived of 5 hp, the quickshfitter has been removed and given to the additional accessories department... But much more has been saved in the S version: another 5 liters have been cut off .s., there are only two engine operating modes - Rain and Road, suspension adjustments are minimized and, the saddest thing in the stock version - the old-style dashboard, no “tablets”.

On the other hand, the “base” in our market will cost 650,000 rubles, while the RS version will cost 850,000. Somewhere in between these values will lie the middle version – R, which seems to me the most rational purchase, especially considering its equipment, which is globally inferior to the “senior” version only in the absence of a quickshifter. And all the “missing” horses are pure marketing, because in fact the “hardware” is the same and specially trained guys can easily return the “shortage”.

Specifications

A powerful engine with excellent traction almost from the very bottom, perfectly precise gearbox operation, a good chassis and a comfortable fit - these are the main advantages of the Triumph Street Triple. But not everything is so simple.

Engine

The 3-cylinder 12-valve in-line engine produces 106 hp. and 68 Nm of torque, and this is enough to “go to the point” with a sharp opening of the gas. Despite the non-standard layout, Triumph engineers managed to successfully place the engine in the frame, tilting it forward and achieving a lower center of mass.

Transmission

The standard 6-speed transmission works perfectly. The gears are long, in first you can accelerate to 100+ km/h, and in third - almost 200 km/h. You shouldn’t do this all the time to save the transmission, but if necessary, the bike is capable of it.

Chassis and brakes

Thanks to a proprietary alloy frame, Triumph engineers managed to keep the weight of the bike at a reasonable level, but they saved on KYB brand suspensions. The standard version is devoid of adjustments, while the chassis seems too rigid to many owners. And the brakes are good, although this applies mainly to fresh models with ABS. In the first generations of the Triumph Street Triple, this system was installed only as an additional option, and the brakes themselves were criticized by many bikers due to mediocre feedback and low information content.

Electronics

The motorcycle is not overloaded with electronics, but it does have the most important auxiliary system - ABS. It can be turned off, but the manufacturer does not recommend this. Otherwise, everything is familiar and understandable.

Weight and dimensions

Weighing in at around 183kg, the Triumph Street Triple doesn't feel subjectively heavy. You can safely tilt it to reasonable limits without fear of dropping it. But due to the wide handlebars, problems can sometimes arise with maneuvering in aisles, since the bike’s mirrors are approximately at the same level as the mirrors of most passenger cars.

Controllability

Thanks to its relatively short wheelbase, the Street Triple 657 is maneuverable. This is especially noticeable on the track, where the bike can demonstrate everything it is capable of. But directional stability leaves much to be desired, especially on a windswept highway.

Fuel consumption

In the combined cycle, the gasoline consumption of the Triumph Street Triple reaches 6-6.5 liters, and the gas tank contains 15 liters. When driving aggressively in urban conditions, consumption may be higher. Moreover, even on the highway it does not drop below 5 liters if you drive calmly.

>>There are not many things in the world that get better with age. The small list of expensive wines and cognacs, as well as classic cars, has recently been joined by Triumph, which introduced the new Street Triple back in 2012.

More precisely, the model itself debuted back in 2007, and in 2012, having gone through global changes, it actually “froze” in the same form and format in which we know it today. And now, three years later, the motorcycle is still just as relevant and interesting, without requiring any modifications or interventions. However, Hinckley thought differently and released a slightly more “evil” version – Triumph Street Triple RX...

Definitely, lovers of five o'clock tea know a lot about good motorcycles! While the Japanese spend a long time and meticulously creating new models of medium-sized naked bikes, the British have long made one of the best motorcycles in this class today - the Triumph Street Triple! And its RX modification is another loud slap in the face to its island competitors.

For those who skipped our test in April 2013, let me remind you of the main components of a classic English naked bike with a pronounced sporty accent and excellent manners. So, we take expensive and high-quality chassis components (Kayaba, Nissin, Brembo), dilute them with first-class Pirelli Diablo Rosso tires, a little reinforced brake hoses to taste...

Yes, I almost forgot about the quickshifter and switchable ABS! SAI multi-point electronic fuel injection is responsible for the precise operation of the engine, and for particularly demanding and fast guys, Street Triple has... Laptimer!

A huge dial tachometer is the main element of the Briton’s dashboard. Its readings are easy to read even from a kilometer away... However, the LCD display also has excellent information content

This exquisite performance from the British is completed by an almost 700 cc three-cylinder engine with a pronounced “bottom”, “tasty” and “meaty” middle and not the saddest character at high speeds - exactly what an angry and intolerant city naked needs!

In the RX modification, the British further emphasized the sportbike roots of the model, so the entire tail section, including the subframe, moved here from the Triumph Daytona 675R. It seems that the designers also borrowed the pilot's seat practically without changes. I must say that this had almost no effect on the comfort of the latter, but now the rider is definitely closer to the motorcycle. And in every sense.

The three-cylinder engine from Hinckley has a very predictable smooth character. For my taste, the engine could use a little more horsepower... On the other hand, the available arsenal within the class is more than enough.

Why Triumph Speed Triple RS is called urban

In 1994, a new company revived the legendary Triumph name, and the Speed Triple was one of their first models. More than 100,000 of them were sold, and it was largely thanks to this model that the streetfighter/hypernaked/sports road category was formed and settled down, and the new Triumph gained character, fame and reputation. In subsequent years, it was eclipsed by newer models, in particular the Street Triple, which became more cubical and generally interesting, and the once legendary Speed Triple practically disappeared into history. Meanwhile, competitors were making 200-horsepower hypernaked bikes like the Kawasaki H2, Ducati Streetfighter V4, and many others were approaching this figure. In 2021 and 2022, the Speed Triple RS aims to restore honor and respect to the legendary name and take a new position in the market. Actually, that’s why the more basic versions were removed from the line and only RS was left with all the technologies and top-end components.

It's not entirely clear why Triumph calls the Triumph Speed Triple RS a "city bike first and foremost" - and then tests it on a track. With fully adjustable suspension, a very tractable engine and even adjustable control arms, the Speed Triple is a truly capable road performer, but can it really deliver on the road? We'll see.

Triumph Speed Triple RS 2021 and 2022

In the meantime, I know for sure that the Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS 2021-2022 is an excellent track motorcycle, equipped with top-end components, riding modes for all conditions, and an engine that can outperform almost any in-line four. So for those guys who come to the track under their own power, the Speed Triple is an excellent option, the capabilities of which will not be so easy to exhaust, and at the same time comfortable in normal city use.

Conclusion

Triumph Street Triple is a true gentleman from Great Britain, a dude with sophisticated manners. But underneath the sleek exterior are powerful muscles that make this motorcycle one of the best in its class . It's worth a look if technical performance is as important to you as style.

Satisfaction

However, all these calculations remain just numbers on paper, you just need to switch the engine operating mode to Track: compact, like a millionaire dwarf, Tom Cruise and angry, like a dozen mothers-in-law, the Street Triple RS instantly brings a smile on your face and a persistent reluctance to return the motorcycle to the dealer . Starting from city streets and ending with a go-kart track, you get a full package of pleasure, seasoned only with a slight bitterness from the fashionable, but not folding, vintage mirrors on the ends of the steering wheel, which are somewhat in the way in really dense traffic.

The multifunctional instrument panel is a privilege of the R and RS versions. The basic version is equipped with the same “toolbox”, however, with expanded functionality in the form of two ignition maps – Road and Rain.

The backlight contrast changes automatically depending on the lighting, you can choose any design style. The RS version also has a laptimer. Of all the ignition maps, the most interesting is the Rider option (not available for the stock version), where you can independently select your preferred settings and, for example, disable traction control and ABS.

Otherwise, everything is great: the English all inclusive package is noticeably different from the Turkish and Egyptian offers: the whiskey here will be real, as well as brewed tea, and no dubious bags! The Street Triple RS will a priori exceed the capabilities of most owners and, in the hands of a professional, will be able to “drink the blood” of many owners of liter sportbikes even on the track, not to mention the city!

Monoblock Brembos are also available only in the R and RS versions, respectively. It is curious that in the middle version it is Brembo M4.32, and in the RS version it is Brembo M50. Stoke is the most “orphan”, where the British added a “traditional” one, like Nissin oatmeal.

In fact, the guys from Hinckley pushed what was already one of the most successful mid-sized naked bikes to new heights, generously added electronics that had already become almost mandatory, and raised the power bar by another 16% compared to its predecessor (in the RS version). And the new dashboard in the style of a large tablet does not give rise to criticism, except that I would simplify the interface for working with traction control a little; with one click of a button this “insurer” will not be able to retire.

By and large, the Street Triple RS chassis is a complete copy of the Triumph Daytona sportbike, so the limits of this naked bike are like those of a sportbike. And like one of the best sportbikes. The Street Triple RS does not have the “traditional” problems with ground clearance that plague many road models. The stock Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa also clearly hints at the capabilities of the motorcycle. Only a current WSBK pilot can complain about the lack of efficiency of monobloc Brembos...

At the world presentation of the new model, held in London, Paul Stroud, head of the company's commercial division, used a slogan that was not modest, but largely reflected the essence of the new model - The street will never be the same again - the streets of the city will never be the same. Of course, there are much more aggressive “comrades” on the market, but these are already “high school students,” and in the high school format, the English bully has become even more dangerous for competitors and, at the same time, noticeably friendlier for its owners.

The Street Triple RS is a true wheelie master. In Track mode, traction control practically does not interfere, reactions to the electronic throttle are clear and predictable, the second gear here is quite “working”, only a little help from the clutch is required. Moreover, with some persistence, the motorcycle is quite capable of doing wheelies in third gear!

Strictly speaking, in such a power unit scheme, the “British” has only two rivals: MV Agusta Brutale and Yamaha MT-09A. True, the “Italian” plays in a completely different price audience, and the “Japanese” is 135 cm3 larger and not so refined. First of all, in terms of controllability. This year, the “nine” finally received a much-needed chassis upgrade and as soon as the opportunity arises, we will try to arrange a head-to-head duel: Triumph Street Triple RS vs Yamaha MT-09A.

Triumph Speed Triple RS Riding Modes

Everything is as it should be: customizable riding modes allow you to literally set the character of the motorcycle to your liking. Of course, I mostly drove in Track mode, but I decided to check everything. Including even Dozhdevoy, in which he drove one lap. After a full-powered Track motorcycle, the Dozhdevoy motorcycle seems dull , but I’m sure that in the rain on slippery asphalt it will be just right.

Driving modes cannot be switched on the fly, and each time you have to stand in the pit lane to do this. After Dozhdevoy, I happily switched to Road and was rewarded with much more power and a perfectly smooth and predictable engine response to gas. But ABS intervenes too often in this mode, so I continued my research.

Sport mode turned out to be more responsive , and ABS intervenes later. But still, the most interesting thing is the Track : in terms of response, it is exactly the same as the Sports, but it has a couple of interesting features that should appeal to track enthusiasts. The two modes differ in the behavior of the optimized tilt ABS and traction control. Actually, in Track ABS goes into “normal” mode (without taking into account the angle of inclination) and works according to a special track algorithm, in which the permissible slip thresholds are raised, and ABS intervention becomes minimally noticeable.

The combination of traction control and wheelie control is impressive: a couple of clumsy attempts to lift the front wheel off the gas resulted in the bike instead of wheelie delivering acceleration so powerful it was simply breathtaking. However, those who like to save a little on the front tires can rest easy: all this is customizable and even completely disabled.

Repair and tuning

Due to the complex design, independent repairs are difficult, and in some cases undesirable. But there are no problems with tuning!

Repair

The Triumph Street Triple is reliable and problems rarely arise with it. You can do all the maintenance yourself, but for major repairs it is better to contact a dealer who has the necessary equipment and tools.

Spare parts

There are no problems finding spare parts; official dealers have almost everything, and what they don’t have will always be delivered to order. But original parts are expensive, and there are few non-original parts - mostly consumables.

Tuning

Triumph offers a thick catalog of tuning options for all of its models, and the Street Triple is no exception. The prices for many items in the catalog are steep, but the choice of tuning from third-party manufacturers is small, so owners have no choice.

Limits

The Triumph Street Triple RX is almost no different in terms of precision and chassis rigidity from the Daytona 675R - one of the best sportbikes today, albeit one that lives outside the framework of most championships. Perhaps the only remark is the completely predictable unwanted “connections” of the driver’s footrests with the track surface... However, it should be noted that they occur at such angles of inclination, where most of Triumph’s classmates will already be on the verge of falling. If there is a desire and willingness to lose a little in comfort, then this can be treated by installing the appropriate tuning parts.

Triumph Street Triple - Brief Review

Triumph Street Triple / Triumph Street Triple

The Triumph Street Triple motorcycle is a lightweight, energetic and daring bike with an updated design. It features a powerful power unit that allows you to accelerate at any speed thanks to its smooth torque delivery. The Street Triple series is always ready for sports races or comfortable trips around the metropolis, helped by the confident silhouette and charisma of these motorcycles.

The Triumph Street Triple's design is based on an aluminum frame with a redesigned rear subframe. Precise handling is ensured by an upgraded suspension with adjustable springs. The brake system uses reinforced hoses. The brakes work in tandem with ABS, which makes the motorbike safer.

The suspension of the Triumph Speed Triple motorcycle uses shock absorbers with wide compression and rebound force settings. To increase safety, the bike's brake calipers are equipped with switchable ABS. The Speed Triple's comfortable riding position is ensured by a low-mounted handlebar, a forward-leaning seat and high footpegs that are slightly set back.

Versatility of the Triumph Speed Triple RS 2021 and 2022

The key to track day success? A well-balanced motorcycle that is easy, fun and not scary to ride, that handles well and allows you to confidently explore the edges of your skills. The stock Speed Triple RS is equipped with high-quality components that allow you to find this very balance in it, customize the motorcycle for yourself and begin to explore your capabilities.

Once in the saddle of the Triumph Speed Triple RS 2021-2022, the first thing I did was adjust the levers. The brake lever has not only an adjustable distance to the grip, but also some modulation of free play. Choose what is closer to you - progressive and smooth brake response or aggressive instant bite and a sharp increase in braking force. The wide handlebars and neutral position of the footpegs are not easily changed, and it took some fiddling to find the optimal riding position for the track. I touched the surface with the footrest a couple of times while leaning deeply, but overall the fit and ergonomics of the Speed Triple are quite suitable for the track. The same goes for the compact chassis, which is more nimble and easier to handle than many 600 and 1000 cc motorcycles that have been ridden on the track.

But the most important tunes for the track are the suspensions, and the 43 Ohlins NIX30 inverted fork and Ohlins TTX36 rear monoshock with remote reservoir are some of the best components available on the market . Both suspensions are equipped with spring preload, rebound and compression adjustments. In the stock setting, the suspensions turned out to be a little soft for the track, which is mainly expressed in sloppy behavior during powerful acceleration when exiting a turn. I tightened both suspensions two clicks in compression and rebound, and this made their work significantly more harmonious and intelligible.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like any complex technique, the Street Triple 657 has both strengths and weaknesses. But the former are expressed much more clearly, which was one of the reasons for the popularity of this model.

Advantages

  • Accelerating dynamics. It is not inferior to “liter” sportbikes, at least in the speed range up to 120-140 km/h.
  • Wind protection. It is there, which is already atypical for naked bikes - the standard “visor” does its job well. But those who like to drive fast often put the windshield higher.
  • Brakes. Tenacious and grippy, they effectively stop the motorcycle even at high speed, and the ABS system adds confidence.
  • Torque. The bike boasts confident traction throughout almost the entire rev range (from about 4000 rpm).
  • Long first gear. If desired, you can start from a standstill, unscrewing the gas to the cutoff, and switch to second at speeds over 100 km/h.

Flaws

  • Price. Original spare parts and tuning for the Triumph Street Triple are expensive, and there are almost no non-original parts.
  • The motor gets very hot. This is its design feature, but in hot weather the fan runs almost constantly, usually turning off only when driving fast on the highway.
  • No adjustments on the standard version. At the same time, the suspension is stiff, and every road bump is felt.

Wheelie factor

The torque correctly “smeared” over most of the tachometer scale, although it does not amaze the imagination with its exorbitant numbers, allows you to completely calmly ride the Triumph Street Triple on the rear wheel in second gear, lifting the motorcycle with a little help from the clutch. It is interesting to note that the so-called power wheelie on the first one is also not difficult - the engine output is completely transparent and predictable!

By the way, the fast-acting quickshifter perfectly “slips” into third gear when moving on the rear wheel in second gear - there is no break in the power flow, and, accordingly, the wheelie is noticeably prolonged, adding to the motorcycle owner a sense of his own unreality and significance.

Solving the problem of clogged float chamber in the carburetor

For owners of the Java 634 motorcycle To prevent the drain hole in the carburetor float chamber on the Java 350 634 motorcycle from becoming clogged, I inserted a curved (see picture) plastic tube into it (a used ballpoint pen refill is suitable). He heated a straight tube in boiling water and cooled it on a pre-bent wire of a suitable diameter - this way it will retain its shape and there will be no kinks on it. It is easy to install if you first loosen the float chamber cover and then tighten the screws, holding the end of the tube in the drain hole.M. IVANOV172500, Kalinin region, Nelidovo, st. Motorcycle IZH Jupiter 4

Jupiter of the fourth generation The team of the Izhmash production association completed the tenth five-year plan with a double labor victory: a new mechanical assembly building was put into operation, where the production of IZH-Jupiter-4 motorcycles was mastered. “Jupiter-4” is distinguished by a successful combination of the best solutions, tested both on its previous models, as well as on Planet-Sport. The ENGINE has undergone further modernization. Thanks to improved filling and changes in the design of the purge channels, its maximum power has been increased from 25 to 28 hp. s., and torque - from 3.23 to 3.58 kgf.m. In this regard, an additional pair of discs was introduced into the CLUTCH. The FRAME is also interchangeable with previous Jupiter models. The changes affected only the mounting of the gas tank, where rubber shock absorbers were used to reduce vibrations. The shape of the tank has become more modern, and the factory emblem also looks new. IN THE CHASSIS, thanks to the modernization of the front…

IZH Planet 5. Three new modifications 7.107-014, 7.107-015, 7.107-016

Three modifications of the IZH Planet 5 motorcycle. For many years, the Izhmash Association has been pursuing a policy of broad unification of manufactured vehicles. Not only parallel, that is, for models produced simultaneously, for example, “IZH-Jupiter-5” and “IZH-Planeta-5”, but also sequential - the continuity of later machines with their predecessors (“IZH-Planet-5”, “IZH-Planet-5”) Planet-4", "IZH-Planet-3", etc.). This trend will continue in the near future. As is known, Izhmash designers envision three promising families of motorcycles: “Sirius” to replace the “Planet”, “Saturn” to replace the “Jupiter” and the new “Orion” family (ZR, 1990, No. 6). The latter is based on a Japanese license, covering a four-stroke single-cylinder engine, telescopic front forks, front wheel disc brake, cast light alloy wheels….

Valves and seats of the URAL 2 motorcycle

Motorcycle enthusiast Ya. Manushkin from the Rostov region asks what requirements the valves, seats and valve springs on the Ural 2 (M-63) motorcycle must meet after repair. After processing, grinding and thorough washing of the seat and valve, it is necessary to check their fit. To do this, apply a thin layer of paint to the seat, insert the corresponding valve and turn it, pressing the head against the seat. The fitting band on the valve head should be 1.5 - 1.8 mm wide and located in the middle of the chamfer. The thickness of the cylindrical belt is at least 1 mm. The shape and dimensions of the saddle are shown in the figure. Rice. Shape and dimensions of the seat The tightness of the valves is checked with kerosene. To do this, wipe the contact surfaces of the valve and seat cleanly and, pressing the valve against the seat, pour kerosene into the suction (or outlet) channel. If kerosene does not penetrate the joint within a minute, the fit is considered satisfactory. It is necessary to check the perpendicularity of the support surfaces in the valve springs...
