How to recognize deception
On a mechanical odometer, the numbers are located on special drums and click upward as the mileage increases, and they must be lined up exactly in one line.
If they are uneven, this is a sign of a twisted run. During correction, the numbers click in the reverse order and become crooked. You can inspect the speedometer cable attachment area to see if the fastening nut is unscrewed (it is better to ask someone who is well versed in cars). You can check the mileage on any odometer - both mechanical and electronic. Fortunately, you can recognize deception in both cases!
If the odometer is electronic, then the best option is to go for diagnostics to a service center at an authorized dealer. Signs of a twisted mileage should be looked for on the dashboard itself. It is necessary to check whether it was removed or not and whether there are traces of tampering on the electronic circuits. Electronic circuit boards of instrument panels are manufactured at the factory and covered with a layer of varnish; traces of tampering in the form of soldered chips, erased varnish or cleaned tracks can be seen with the naked eye.
Also, the mileage readings are recorded in the car’s on-board computer, and if the mileage is corrected, then traces of hacking remain, which can be detected by an electronics specialist at the brand’s proprietary service center.
The original mileage of cars from America and Canada can be found through the Carfax and Autochek databases. For Japanese brands, the mileage is indicated on the auction sheet (a document that is filled out by auction experts before putting the car up for auction, it indicates the condition of the car, equipment and options), but this is possible when the car was just delivered; during resale, the sheet may be “lost” "
Signs of a twisted speedometer based on the condition of the car
When properly changing the mileage of a car, it is rarely possible to detect human intervention in an electronic device. Only in some car models is the distance meter duplicated in the electronic chip of the ignition key or in the on-board computer.
It is often possible to detect a sharp “rejuvenation” of a car based on a number of indirect signs.
- The discrepancy between the indicated mileage and the actual condition of the car can be determined by the brake discs. Heavy wear and tear with low mileage should raise logical suspicion. If there is any doubt whether the front discs have been replaced, their wear should be compared with the rear ones.
- The actual mileage can be determined by the wheels of the car. “Bald” tires or completely new tires indicate high mileage. The condition of the wheel rims also reflects the actual operation of the machine. Chips, dents, and traces of rust lead to unpleasant thoughts about the operation of the car.
- The sloppy condition of the interior may indicate both the untidiness of the owner and the high mileage of the car. Suspicion should be aroused by a worn steering wheel, erased inscriptions on buttons, shabby upholstery, and worn pedal pads. With a mileage of about 100 thousand km. so it’s almost impossible to tatter the interior from the inside.
- On the body of any car with high mileage, many small and large chips appear in the area of the hood and the left side of the body. Cloudy headlight lenses (glasses) also indicate long distances traveled.
- Under the hood of the car you can also find many interesting facts that indicate a rewound odometer. The condition of drive belts, boots, oil seals, wiring, as well as mounted units, despite the dusty shell, should be almost ideal.
- If the owner has a service book, you need to pay attention to the date and odometer readings for the last maintenance. Then you can calculate what the average annual mileage was for the seller. Statements that the car was parked in a garage for a long time, that grandfather rode in it, etc. should be ignored.
- If the owner, even with the speedometer unscrewed, was able to keep the car in excellent condition (as confirmed by diagnostics at a serious service station), then you can safely buy such a car. He will faithfully serve the new car owner. Today, adjusting the electronic speedometer has become a common procedure for specialists in the field of computer diagnostics, so you should not be afraid of any side problems with the car after “rewinding”.
It is possible to “unscrew” the odometer in the opposite direction on almost any car, but it is worth remembering that fraud can be detected not only by technical means, but also by indirect signs.
Rewinding the VAZ odometer upwards
It so happened that I had to replace the VAZ dashboard with a new one. The replacement was completed, but the new instrument cluster has incorrect odometer readings. To save (continue) the odometer readings from the old tidy, you need to increase the mileage. |
- Program. The odometer programmer allows you to change the mileage using a special program and programmer. To do this you need to disassemble the instrument panel. Advantages: it is possible to set any odometer readings (decrease/rewind the odometer, or increase), the whole process does not require much time.
- Simulation of a speed sensor. In this case, there is no need to disassemble the dashboard. The point is to sequentially wind up the mileage using a generator (simulating a speed sensor). Disadvantages: you have to wait for the mileage to build up, and the main thing is that the odometer correction is only upward. How to do this further:
Method 1: Computer sound card pulse generator program.
- A rectangular pulse generator program (for example, this one).
- Computer with sound card.
- Active speakers or amplifier to adjust the signal level.

Video “Winding a speedometer with your own hands”
How to make a speedometer winder at home is described in this video (the author of the video is Evgeny Ushakov).
> VAZ 2114 – getting the mileage in order
VAZ 2114 cars are also known as Samara-2. This hatchback is equipped with five doors and compares favorably with its predecessors. It’s not surprising that this car quickly found its fans.
It is worth noting that this model has a fairly convenient instrument panel. It is designed in such a way that you can immediately monitor all the important indicators of the car. Simplicity and high information content allow it to provide a broad overview of all necessary indicators.
It must also be said that the backlight makes it easy to navigate all the numbers even at night. The device of the dashboard itself is not complicated in any way. Therefore, it will be quite easy to check the mileage of a VAZ 2114.
Reasons for mileage twisting
The electronic meter stopped counting mileage
There are quite a lot of people today who want to correct their car's mileage readings. And everyone justifies their desire differently. This includes a malfunction of the speedometer, replacement of the instrument panel, and driving on non-standard tires. Although, to be honest, the main justification for such actions is the desire to prolong the youth of your four-wheeled friend, perhaps for the purpose of subsequent sale. Selling a car with lower mileage is easier and more enjoyable to buy. Both the seller and the buyer are satisfied. By the way, when driving on non-standard tires, calibrating the speedometer will help solve the problem for a long time. And you won't need to regularly reduce your mileage. There are also those who want to increase their mileage. Mainly on commercial vehicles, or if the car is used for business purposes. This is also understandable in its own way. Often, the fuel consumption standards calculated by accounting departments do not cover the actual costs of gasoline. On the contrary, compensation for the use of personal transport only covers refueling, without taking into account depreciation and wear and tear of equipment. In an attempt to compensate for these costs, drivers resort to cunning and increase their mileage.
Why bother?
Before we tell you about the operation of the speedometer twister, it would be a good idea to figure out why you need to twist and unwind the readings. Winding the indicator using a special winder allows you to increase the cost of transport when selling, this is understandable.
As for winding, there may be several reasons:
- A speedometer winder can be used to increase fuel and lubricant costs. After all, increased mileage makes it possible to write off more gasoline - such schemes are relevant for drivers of commercial vehicles. But if a business uses an older vehicle, fuel consumption levels will be higher. Adjusting the speedometer allows you to compensate for refueling costs.
- Speedometer calibration may be required when replacing the instrument panel. After all, when changing the control panel, you should take readings from the device in accordance with the operating conditions.
- Speedometer rewinding may be required when using other discs not recommended by the manufacturer. The diameter of the discs can be either larger or smaller; during calculations, the odometer may produce errors, showing incorrect readings. The speedometer corrector makes it possible to eliminate the error.

How to twist a speedometer and where is the best place to do it
How a speedometer determines the speed of a car. Car speedometer
Let's pretend that we are very worried about incorrect odometer readings, because we installed slightly higher tires, due to which the accuracy of the device may give an error of 0.02%. Naturally, this hurt us to the core, and we decide to correct the testimony. On mechanical speedometers, which are equipped with old Gazelle, UAZ, VAZ, and all Soviet cars, this can be done quite simply and even in several ways.
The first method involves surgical intervention directly into the odometer mechanism. Armed with tweezers and an awl, we can easily lobotomize the speedometer and set the correct numbers. The second method is also not very sophisticated - unscrew the speedometer drive cable, take an electric drill with reverse, and twist it until you are completely satisfied. In this way, you can rejuvenate the mechanical odometer to any value. But what to do with electronics, everything is more complicated and incomprehensible here. There are no hopeless situations.
The new generation Gazelle, VAZ 2114, 2110, Priora, older Ford and Opel cars have an electronic odometer, but it is not as deeply integrated into the electronic system as in modern cars. The procedure is quite simple, you can do everything yourself in literally 10 minutes. The main thing is to find a speed sensor in the circuit and connect a clock generator to it. Even a schoolboy from a radio amateur club can assemble such a device. All that remains is to set the direction of change in the readings and admire the result.
With modern cars that were produced before 2008, the situation is more complicated. You can’t do this with your own hands, since you need basic programming knowledge and, perhaps, basic skills in using a soldering iron will come in handy. The fact is that each manufacturer encrypts odometer data in completely different ways and they are stored in different places. But for almost all cars - Ford Focus 2, Renault Logan - it is completely impossible to erase them. They will not be visible on the odometer, but they are entered into the memory of the on-board computer in any case. This is done in order to control the scheduled mileage between maintenance.
On new generation VAZs and Gazelles it is very easy to change the odometer
This is where the announcements we talked about earlier come in handy. If you have to decide to take such a step, then you need to be very picky in relation to the companies that provide such a service. One wrong move and you can destroy the electronic control unit or make unwanted changes to the settings of engine control systems.
How to use a winder correctly
In order to start accumulating mileage you need to:
Take the speedometer winder
Turn on the ignition or start the engine
Insert the winder into the diagnostic connector
Winding can be done both with the ignition on and with the engine running, with rare exceptions regarding trucks with 24V voltage on board. When the engine is running on such cars, the voltage can reach up to 28V, which will lead to strong heating of the winding. On other cars you can safely drive and “warm up”.
People often ask, is it possible to wind on the go? It is not recommended to do this on most cars.
- You need to understand that if you forget to pull the device out of the connector and urgently fall somewhere, nothing will burn out.
- But driving with the speedometer winding turned on is not recommended specifically and for a long time based on traffic safety considerations.
- The fact is that the car’s units “see” movement at high speed, the electric power steering can reduce the effort, and the ABS does not adequately respond to emergency braking.
- In general, it's not worth it.
What devices are used to wind up electronic speedometers?
Considering the variety of cars available and methods for processing data from the speedometer, several different options have been created that allow you to correct the distance traveled. The circuit of such a device can be made both on discrete elements and on microprocessor systems, but all finished products are divided into the following types:
CAN twister
This device is designed for use on modern machines. Here you need to know that CAN is a special bus through which data is exchanged between car electronics units. And its design implies the presence of a diagnostic connector, through which, knowing the exchange protocol, you can gain access to individual devices.
Accordingly, thanks to this, you can adjust the contents of the necessary memory cells, achieving the desired result. It is impossible to detect with diagnostic equipment that memory cells have been changed.
You can buy a high-quality spinner on the website https://can-podmotka.ru
Pulse twister for OBDII
This device is intended for use with foreign cars that do not have a CAN bus. This device is connected via a special OBDII diagnostic connector. In this case, the speedometer receives a sequence of pulses simulating signals from the speed sensor, as a result of which the readings of the distance traveled change.
Speed generator
This circuit simulates a speed sensor. Instead, the generator turns on and produces a sequence of pulses that arrive at the speedometer and cause its readings to change. Mostly suitable for electromechanical devices and domestic cars - VAZ, UAZ and others manufactured before 2006.
ABS speedometer knob
Suitable for cars equipped with ABS. Its work is based on controlling the speed and rotation of the wheel. A spinner connected to the corresponding connector simulates the operation of the wheels, and the controller, receiving this information, begins to change the speedometer readings.
Additionally, it is worth noting that the determining factor when choosing a device for winding the speedometer is the car model and its production date. In some cases, changes in the speedometer readings on a VAZ or UAZ will be completely different from those on a KAMAZ or MAZ.
You can make a winding device yourself or buy a ready-made one, but the most important thing is to determine whether it can be used on a given machine. If used incorrectly, you can simply burn the electronics.
As strange as it may seem, sometimes it becomes more important not to twist the speedometer, but, on the contrary, to wind it up. There are a number of reasons, both objective and subjective, that force one to do this. More than one device has been created that allows you to solve the problem, and you can choose a device that takes into account the production date of a particular car and allows you to carry out this procedure without consequences.
List for manufacturing a “device for winding run”:
- AZ-1 is an emergency ignition unit, previously sold for carburetor cars, but widely used in homemade products, it cost me 160 rubles. (there are also other modifications: az-2, az-3, they are also suitable);
- Block for Hall sensor - 35r;
- Plug into the cigarette lighter - 35 rubles;
- Crocodile - 15 rubles;
- Wires 5m - 44p-o.5 cross-section and there was no shorter length;
- I also had electrical tape and a soldering iron with solder; but you can also use twists.
Total: 289 rubles - but this is rough, some will have it cheaper or more expensive. But if you work on a “collective farm machine,” you must agree that it will pay for itself in one go. The device for winding mileage is quite compact; it can even be moved into the case of a mobile phone charger so that it is less noticeable.
By the way, if anyone wants to make a pulse generator on their own, here are photos of the insides of the AZ-1:
The device is still being produced, but due to low demand it cannot be found in all auto parts stores, so pick up the phone and call the stores in your city and you will definitely find it.
I took a photo of the inside in case you were unable to find the Emergency Ignition. Therefore, all these elements are sold in any radio equipment store and cost mere pennies; the circuit is very simple.
Therefore, making a device for winding mileage will not cause you more difficulty.
This also made me think, since the wires on the block were all the same color:
By the way, the cigarette lighter also has a central wire +. But it seems that the main points are all about production.
Replacing the speedometer cable on a VAZ 2101-VAZ 2107
Welcome! Speedometer cable - it is responsible for transmitting speed from the gearbox to the vehicle's speedometer instrument panel. One end of this cable is connected to the drive gearbox, which is located on the gearbox, and the other end is connected to the speedometer mechanism itself, which in turn is located on the instrument panel.
Note! To replace the cable, you will need to stock up on the following set of tools: First, be sure to stock up on basic tools, such as a screwdriver and wrenches. Next, you will need to take pliers, and also a wire approximately 2 meters long and with a diameter of 0.2-0.5 mm to make it easier to replace the cable!
- Replacing the speedometer cable
- Additional video clip
Where is the speedometer cable located? It is located near the bottom of the gearbox housing and is attached to the gearbox. For clarity, so that you have at least the slightest idea of where the cable is located, look at the photo below, where the arrow indicates the cable:
When should you change the speedometer cable? It must be replaced if:
- Failure, and therefore the speedometer will not show any values on the instrument panel.
- And also when it is deformed and when the nut that secures it to the gearbox or to the speedometer mechanism breaks.
Note! If you have a nut securing the cable to the gearbox, or to the speedometer, then the speedometer needle will jump sharply when driving!
How to replace the speedometer cable on a VAZ 2101-VAZ 2107?
Note! The cable must be replaced on a lift or inspection pit!
Removal: 1) At the beginning of the operation, you will need to remove the instrument panel from the car. (How to remove the instrument panel from a VAZ 2106 car, see the article: “Replacing the instrument panel”) (How to remove the instrument panel on a VAZ 2104 and VAZ 2107, see the article: “Replacing the instrument panel”)
Note! Unfortunately, instructions for removing the instrument panel on other cars of the classic family cannot be found on the Internet, so remove the panel on your car following the example of removing the panel from a VAZ 2104, VAZ 2106, VAZ 2107!
2) Next, using pliers, completely unscrew the nut that secures the cable to the mechanism, and after unscrewing, disconnect the cable.
Note! After disconnecting the cable, tie a 2-meter long wire to the cable nut by the eyes!
3) Then move to the bottom of the car, and there, unscrew the nut that secures the cable to the gearbox (it is indicated by the arrow), and after unscrewing the nut, disconnect the cable.
4) Now take the cable in your hands and pull it out of the car.
Note! Pull out the cable carefully; the wire that is connected to the cable nut should not be completely stretched out and, as a result, removed from the car!
5) Finally, untie the wire from the nut.
Installation:
Note! To extend the life of the cable, you can lubricate its surface with a special lubricant called “Litol-24”; to do this, before installing a new cable, first pull it out of the sheath starting from the side that is connected to the gearbox gearbox, and then lubricate it for “2/3 of the length”. lubricate it!
Do the entire installation of the cable in the reverse order of removal, but for clarity we will show you a small part of the installation:
1) First, take the new cable in your hands and tie the wire previously untied from the old cable to its nut.
2) Then sit in the passenger compartment and, pulling the wire, extend one end of the cable into the vehicle interior.
Note! To prevent you from getting confused, remember one important thing: The end of the cable that is connected to the gearbox located on the box is equipped with a protective cover, so install the cable correctly!
3) And at the end of the operation, use a screwdriver to tuck the cover into place.
Note! After installing the cable, check it, make sure that it is not bent in any places, and only then start the engine and drive it to see how it works!
Additional video clip: You can clearly see the second method of replacing the speedometer cable in a video clip prepared especially for you, in which everything is described and shown in detail.

In the XP3 connector at pin No. 10 there is a wire coming from the speed sensor, which is what we need. We also take power from this connector for our winding: No. 3 is a minus and No. 2 is a plus. We connect according to this diagram:
Where 1 is our emergency ignition, 2 is a toggle switch. We wind the wire coming from the 1st leg of the emergency ignition to wire No. 2 in the XP3 connector (this is a plus). We wind the wire coming from the 3rd emergency ignition pin to wire No. 3 in the XP3 connector of the instrument panel (this is a minus).
From the XP3 chip we take out wire No. 10 and connect it as shown in the diagram with the wire where it says “to the sensor”. In the place where wire No. 10 was inserted we connect, according to the diagram, the wire with the inscription “into the shield” That’s all, all that remains is to embed place our button in the panel in an inconspicuous place and lay and secure all our wires.
The principle of operation is simple: if you need to wind up the speedometer, turn on the toggle switch and then the ignition and watch how our speedometer puts the needle in the region of 120-180 km. at one o'clock. You can drive a car in this mode, the winding speed will not change. In the middle position of the toggle switch, the speedometer will not work, but in the third position it will work in standard mode. I wish you success in connecting.

Psychology
On the market and various websites, you often come across advertisements for the sale of cars that are 5-7 years old with mileage from 30 to 70 thousand kilometers. Somehow this doesn’t really agree with the Autostat data. The discrepancy is explained simply - for more than half of used cars, the mileage is simply adjusted to psychologically comfortable levels. In other words, just twisted.
By the way, if not half of car owners, then a good third for some reason believe that the “thing” where the mileage numbers are shown is called a speedometer. Like, he alone is responsible for both speed and mileage. In fact, the odometer is responsible for the mileage. Let's talk about him.
How to connect a device for winding the mileage of GAZ, VAZ.
Let's start with the GAZ car, I have a sable, it is 100% similar to a gazelle. Therefore, they have a block on the instrument panel, in the area of the gas pedal, there are few wires there, but among them there is GREEN , so that is our goal. We choose the most invisible place, in the braid, and carefully expose it so that our crocodile can power the line. And we plug everything into the cigarette lighter, turn the ignition and “your car is rushing at a speed of 150 km/h.” It reels 150 km in about an hour, so be careful with your timing if you leave the reel unattended.
Now let’s look at a VAZ, their speed sensor has the same connector as the emergency ignition, here we just take it and attach the AZ-1 block to the sensor’s place. And your car rushes at a speed of 150 km/h while standing in a parking lot or traffic jam))).
From practice, when the winding is connected, the car slows down a little when driving, but it consumes less fuel, so this also helps to save money.
Mileage is a number that is crucial when selling a car. After all, the higher the mileage of the car, the lower its cost will be. Mileage shows how far the car has traveled over the entire period of its operation. That is why many drivers, who want to sell their car at a higher price and faster, resort to deception in the form of reducing the mileage to the minimum level. In this article we will tell you how to twist the mileage of a car and how to determine that the mileage of a car is twisted.
Electromechanical speedometers and odometers
With the transition to electromechanical systems, it has become more difficult to twist the speedometer. Information about the speed of movement was determined not by the number of revolutions of the transmission cable, but by a pulse generator that replaced the gearbox on the gearbox. The pulses were converted by a stepper motor into rotation of the worm gear shaft and wheels with numbers on the information board.
Now the odometer assembly was often non-separable, and in order to check the car’s mileage with your own hands, it was necessary to translate the numbers on the indicator wheels with a sharp awl, which created the risk of leaving traces of tampering. Now it was troublesome to twist the speedometer readings the old way.
The working principle of the speedometer knob.
As you know, the speedometer shows us the speed of the car, and the odometer shows its mileage. In order to increase mileage, the speedometer knob must be connected to the control unit directly to the electrical circuit, which records the vehicle’s speed indicators. By doing this, you will ensure that while the car is moving, the crank will generate speed sensor impulses, which will ultimately lead to an increase in mileage.
The pulses supplied by the generator are absolutely identical to the pulses supplied by the car's speed sensor. All this allows you to use the twister without worrying that someone will subsequently notice that the mileage has been artificially increased. It is important to note that with the help of this device, mileage can only be increased, but not decreased.
About types of speedometers
Before figuring out how you can change the readings of such a device with your own hands, you need to consider its possible options. There are several fundamentally different types of speedometers:
- mechanical;
- electromechanical;
- electronic.
Mechanical speedometer
The gearbox speed is transmitted directly to the device by a cable. There the number of revolutions is measured and converted into the distance traveled. For this, a gearbox with a pre-selected conversion coefficient is used. The photo will help you understand how this is done.
In fact, it turns out that one revolution at the output of the gearbox corresponds to a certain number of meters of the distance traveled. This rotation of the output shaft is perceived by special disks (indicating device) with printed numbers displaying the measured distance.
Electromechanical speedometer
This type of device is a further development of the previously described device. In many cases the cable was the source of increased error and was replaced. A speed sensor installed on the gearbox was inserted into the device. Impulses from it were sent to a motor with appropriate control that rotated the gearbox. Otherwise, the operation of such a speedometer was no different from a mechanical one, resembling it in appearance.
Electronic speedometer
A similar type is installed on modern cars. In this case, the number of wheel revolutions is measured. Knowing the length of its circumference, it is not difficult to convert the number of revolutions into the distance traveled. The result obtained is displayed on the LCD.
What methods of twisting the speedometer are there?
The first mechanical odometers were wound up quite simply, the method, as they say, is “old-fashioned” and, frankly speaking, “clumsy”, but at the same time very effective. The principle of rolling the mechanical odometer was to rotate the speedometer drive backwards, that is, in the opposite direction, thereby causing the odometer rollers to rotate backwards, reducing the total mileage of the car. By the way, it was precisely because of this method that the process itself began to be called “twisting.”
With the advent of electronic speedometers, as well as various sensors, the above-described “old-fashioned method” fell into oblivion, since there was no drive as such, therefore, there was nothing to twist. The twisting of the speedometer itself began to be carried out by adjusting the data that was recorded in certain places. By the way, with the advent of electronic odometers, the function of twisting the odometer began to be called “correction” or “correction” of the speedometer (odometer). For reliability, the mileage data itself is recorded in several blocks; after adjusting the odometer became very popular, and the number of deceived buyers exceeded about 0, manufacturers began to try to complicate the process of erasing mileage. Conditional protection against twisting has become the recording of mileage data in 5-8 or even 10 blocks. However, looking ahead, I will say that, unfortunately, there is no protection against twisting, and you can twist the mileage on almost any car. The professionals in this business have learned to do this work so well that it has become simply impossible to identify a twisted speedometer.
Ways to change speedometer readings
Despite the fact that the years that were accompanied by a total shortage have passed, nowadays it is now possible to purchase any auto part without difficulty, the habit of “embellishing” the condition of the vehicle has remained with car owners.
Car manufacturers have abandoned mechanical speedometers, equipping modern cars with electronic devices in order to somehow try to eradicate this addiction to deception, but it is completely impossible to stop it. Many people still strive to increase the speedometer mileage.
How to change the mechanical speedometer readings
Mechanical speedometers often accompanied technical means until the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. Although some domestic cars continued to be equipped with them even before 2007.
Due to the fact that mechanical speedometers are simple devices, even an inexperienced car enthusiast can twist the speedometer himself, who will first familiarize himself with the advice of experienced craftsmen.
Initially, the speedometer is removed and connected to a motor, after starting which the mileage will automatically increase or decrease. By the way, some car owners, indeed, not only reduce the mileage, but also increase it, on the contrary, thereby convincing the buyer that a vehicle with a certain mileage has already successfully passed maintenance and therefore does not need repairs.
When removing the speedometer, it is impossible not to break the seal, so this trick may not work for all purchasers. Although some brands of cars are accompanied by fastening the speedometer in such a way that does not require its complete removal, it is enough to disconnect only the drive cable.
When trying to twist the speedometer, it is not recommended to rush, since the numbers will not be located on the same line when the motor is running quickly, giving away tricks of manipulation to the buyer.
How to change electromechanical and electronic speedometer readings
Electromechanical speedometers replaced mechanical ones in the eighties, but lasted until about 2008. The drive cables in them were replaced with electrical wires.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=a2_qSm-SXeE
Manufacturers installed special indicators in the gearbox that read pulses from the rotating modulator.
It is possible to twist an electromechanical speedometer using a special pulse generator, although some craftsmen manage to perform such work using an electric motor on which the modulator is directly installed.
Modern cars are already equipped with electronic speedometers, since manufacturers are interested in a serious degree of protection. Owners of modern technical equipment who want to know how to twist an electronic speedometer can get advice on this issue from experienced craftsmen, but one cannot hope for an easy solution to the problem.
In most cases, you cannot reduce or increase mileage yourself, so you have to turn to specialists
Unfortunately, this type of service is accompanied by a considerable cost, so it is important to weigh the feasibility of such actions
And yet, if someone really wants to know how to twist an electronic speedometer, the craftsmen can reveal the secret that all actions are accompanied by the use of computer equipment, in particular, a special programmer that connects directly to a microcircuit containing information about the car’s mileage.
Having ensured such a connection, the programmer manually enters the necessary parameters, changing the mileage of the car. You can check the mileage by connecting the computer to the diagnostic socket. The advantage of this method is that there is no need to remove the instrument panel. However, the disadvantage indicates that it is extremely difficult to have the appropriate software that allows such manipulations, since it is only available from the manufacturer or official dealer, who value the prestige of the company and are unlikely to want to distribute the software to everyone.
So, adjusting the speedometer indicator is a real relic of the past, which has confidently and firmly penetrated modern life and is not going to lose ground, allowing owners to “cunningly” but profitably sell their cars.

From time to time people come to me with such a specific task - to turn up the speedometer, and just forward.
Basically, these are drivers of cars of some departments, probably this is how they report to their superiors for the “saved” gasoline. Of course, in more modern foreign cars this task becomes a little more complicated due to the growth of “digitalization” inside the car. But it is known that in most simple cars this is achieved by simply simulating the operation of the car speed sensor.
I would like something more efficient and as simple as, for example, the circuit on NE555. In general, I began to think about this for a long time, but never got around to it.
But keeping in mind also the occasional need to make a winding circuit for the speedometer, I wanted that very speed of setting the frequency. For this I decided to use the most common ATTINY13 controller.
The circuit turns out to be simple, a 5 V stabilizer and an N-Ch mosfet transistor switch (I took any suitable one in the SOP8 package and suitable parameters), there are many of these on the boards of old computers) or you can simply put a regular bipolar transistor. I think that instead of the LM7805, it was possible to power the MK through a resistor and install a regular 5-volt zener diode, but the stabilizer is inexpensive and takes up little space.
Then the frequency remains in memory and the buttons are no longer needed. I etched the board, it came out simple, the dimensions could be reduced a little, but I don’t think there’s any point yet. I don’t tin the boards before soldering, I just cover them with liquid rosin, which serves as a kind of varnish protection. And at the same time, when soldering, it is a flux.
I compiled the program for MK myself, so I think it doesn’t look the most optimal by design. But the functions I need are performed.
I don’t yet have a friendly relationship with Arduino, apparently I don’t have enough perseverance (alas, I’m not young anymore, so I haven’t gone far beyond blinking the LED)))) Therefore, I muddied the program with Algorithm Builder. The program is essentially a highly simplified assembler with a humanized face))) Therefore, even for me, sometimes it helps to force the MK to perform the tasks I need.
ps I’m posting this for the second time. (for some reason the topic was deleted a day ago. The reason was not indicated)

How to wind the speedometer
This is a rather complex and controversial issue. It all depends on the type of speedometer (each can have its own method), as well as on the production date of the car. Below we will discuss some possible approaches to achieve this task.
How to wind up a mechanical speedometer?
Similar devices are installed on old cars, for example, the VAZ or UAZ family of early years of production. In this case, you can act in several ways. The simplest thing is to disconnect the cable from the speed sensor, connect a drill to it, and switch it to reverse mode and change the readings. Another approach is to disassemble the instrument panel, remove the meter, and use the necessary tools to change its readings.
This kind of work can be done with your own hands. However, this is only available on cars of older years of production (before 2005), and its brand does not really matter - VAZ, KAMAZ, UAZ, MAZ or Gazelle. The type of speedometer will be decisive.
How to adjust an electromechanical speedometer
Despite the fact that these types of devices remained only on old machines, working with them is much more difficult than with purely mechanical ones. Here, as in other situations discussed below, it is necessary to separate two tasks:
- rewinding the speedometer - increasing its readings;
- twisting the speedometer means decreasing the instrument readings.
In principle, both of them can be done with your own hands, only the approach in each of the cases under consideration must be different. Reducing the readings is only possible by disassembling the panel, removing the counter and manually rearranging its values. But the problem of how to wind up a speedometer of this type can be solved by using a generator. It generates pulses arriving at the control input, and the readings of the device change according to their number. As in the previous case, this also does not depend on the brand of the car - VAZ, KAMAZ, UAZ, MAZ or Gazelle.
How to wind up an electronic speedometer
Specific methods for adjusting speedometer readings are determined primarily by the production time of the car.
Therefore, to change its readings, it may be necessary not only to supply additional pulses from speed sensors, but also to reprogram some blocks. And besides, again, depending on the characteristics of the car, for different models of UAZ, VAZ, Gazelle, etc., as well as the year of manufacture, the method of accessing the speedometer will be determined.
Therefore, it is quite difficult to do such work with your own hands, although no one says that this is impossible. But this will require the use of special electronic devices.
Why twist the mileage?
There can be many reasons for this. And you shouldn’t assume that checking the mileage of a VAZ 2114 will only be relevant in cases where the car needs to be sold. Next we will give the main examples when a speedometer twister may be needed.
- Engine replacement. But the fact is that the mileage of a new engine may differ greatly from your indicators, which makes it very difficult to care for it and pass technical control.
- Replacing the dashboard. The principle here is the same as that described in the previous paragraph.
- Possibility of obtaining guaranteed repairs. As a rule, the manufacturer does not repair cars that have reached a certain mileage limit. Inflating mileage and thus claiming warranty service is a common practice among car enthusiasts.
However, the odometer readings do not always change downward. Those who want to receive a larger amount from the insurance company in the event of an accident tend to add a few hundred kilometers. After all, it’s no secret that they all use underestimating factors that are directly related to mileage. And payments very often do not cover all expenses.
