How to twist an electronic speedometer and is it worth it?

Every third report from the Autocode service shows that the car’s mileage is incorrect. On average, each car travels about 20 thousand km per year. However, on sale you can find many 5-7 year old vehicles with mileage of 50-60 thousand km, or even less. Owners of such cars may claim that they only used the car “on major holidays.” But, most likely, the actual mileage is much higher than that indicated on the dashboard. Let's figure out what methods fraudsters use and how to determine the twisted mileage.

For various reasons, it may be necessary to reset the mileage. This is a rather complex and high-tech operation. Our specialists have gained enormous experience in this area, which allows us to correct the odometer quickly and efficiently .

Signs of a twisted speedometer based on the condition of the car

When properly changing the mileage of a car, it is rarely possible to detect human intervention in an electronic device. Only in some car models is the distance meter duplicated in the electronic chip of the ignition key or in the on-board computer.

It is often possible to detect a sharp “rejuvenation” of a car based on a number of indirect signs.

It is possible to “unscrew” the odometer in the opposite direction on almost any car, but it is worth remembering that fraud can be detected not only by technical means, but also by indirect signs.

Odometer as a mileage guard

Information about the car's mileage is displayed on the instrument panel by a special device called an odometer. All odometers work in combination with the speedometer and have a rigid connection with it. The odometer reading is designed to read speed information and calculate the approximate distance traveled by the vehicle.

In total, in the automotive industry it is customary to distinguish three types of odometer: electronic , electromechanical and mechanical . The first device is part of the car's on-board computer, where the readings are read and displayed in visible numbers on the instrument panel. The second device reads the rotation of a special wheel and converts it into electronic signals, which subsequently appear on the screen. The latter has a mechanical connection with the speedometer and is based on the operation of a large number of gears.

One way or another, they all perform a single function - they read the mileage of the car. The only difference regarding the change in mileage can be considered only in the way it is twisted.

Changing the odometer reading

Having the software, the programmer is connected to the computer and the programs are launched.

In PonyProg, you select the car model and the year of its production, after which a hexadecimal code consisting of two lines will be displayed below.

This code encrypts the mileage that is currently stored in the flash memory.

Next, the mileage calculator is launched, the required mileage value is entered into it, after which it will convert the digital value into hexadecimal code, which will need to be entered instead of the one displayed in PonyProg.

After this, the flash memory is soldered into place on the dashboard board, it is assembled and installed on the car.

If all work is completed correctly, the value on the odometer display will change to the desired value.

It is often possible to detect a sharp “rejuvenation” of a car based on a number of indirect signs.

It is possible to “unscrew” the odometer in the opposite direction on almost any car, but it is worth remembering that fraud can be detected not only by technical means, but also by indirect signs.

Principle of operation

Before reducing the mileage on your car, you need to know what type of odometer is installed in the dashboard. There are several types:

  • mechanical. The mileage is displayed by a drum counter. A cable is installed in the gearbox housing, which is connected to the gear drive in the dashboard;
  • electromechanical. The mechanical counter sends impulses to the converter, which, according to the established algorithm, recalculates them into kilometers or miles;
  • electronic. The rotation of the wheels is recorded by ABS sensors, which send a signal to the engine ECU, where it is used to ensure the operation of many mechanisms. It is from the ECU that mileage information is sent to the LCD display in the dashboard.

Twisting mechanical odometer

In order to quickly check the mileage, you will need to remove the dashboard. Next, you need to disassemble it to such a state that you have access to the drum counter. In the case of a mechanical speedometer, it is extremely difficult to describe in a unified manner how to read the mileage. We deliberately did not mention the method of connecting a screwdriver to the speedometer drive. Using this method, rewinding the mileage will take forever. Therefore, to demonstrate a more effective method, let’s consider a Daewoo Lanos and a VAZ 2121 with an old-style instrument panel.

Daewoo Lanos

The tools you will need are two small straight (flat) screwdrivers. To check the mileage on a Daewoo Lanos 1.5 (dashboard with tachometer) you need:

  • disconnect the housing with the speedometer and odometer from the tidy (attached in four places);
  • on the reverse side of the speedometer scale you will see the odometer drum;
  • pull out the metal cotter pin from one side;
  • a four-legged latch will be visible from above, which can be removed by prying it with a screwdriver;
  • lift the white plastic plate enclosing the drums;
  • now turn the body over and set the drums to the value you need;
  • Having established the mileage, assemble the parts in the reverse order of removal.

VAZ 2121

You can rewind the mileage on the Niva using a small flat-head screwdriver and the following manipulations:

  • After removing the speedometer housing, disconnect the facing glass;
  • Unscrew the two screws on the back of the scale. One of the fasteners will be under the seal, which needs to be bent. Now you can remove the back cover;
  • On the side displaying the speedometer, slightly unscrew the two screws. This will weaken the drums;
  • remove the metal bracket securing the drums;
  • you can completely remove the drum counter;
  • hold the latches with one hand and move the meter readings with the other. This way you can set any mileage of the car.

Winding up the mileage of the electronic meter

In order to wind up an electronic odometer, you will need several devices:

  • a programmer that can be universal;
  • A clothespin that can be used to attach to many microcircuits. The convenience of this method is that the circuit does not need to be soldered. But it is the traces of soldering that often give away the wrong mileage on a car. Monitor the quality of manufacture of the clothespins you buy. Its parts should not play. Otherwise, you simply won't be able to reliably join your contacts;
  • special software on a computer.

Electronic odometer readings are recorded on a special chip. Therefore, in order to get back the lost mileage, it is necessary to overwrite the information saved on the diagram. Sometimes it is impossible to rewind the mileage without soldering the board.

Do-it-yourself changes in readings

As a test car, we will consider the Chevrolet Niva, VAZ 2114, 2110 and other cars that have a two-window dashboard. In order to reset the electronic odometer, you need to:

  • connect the removed panel;
  • connect the K-line adapter to the PC and dashboard;
  • specify the type of COM port;
  • Install the VDO research program in advance. Check the box “Record mileage only”;
  • Enter the value you need in the mileage field. Now this figure will be the new mileage of your car;
  • turn on the power supply to the device;
  • connect the K-line adapter connector to the outermost contact of the dashboard connector;
  • hold the contact and press "Write EEPROM"
  • Restart the instrument panel by unplugging and reinserting the power connector.

If you did everything according to the instructions, after the reboot the updated mileage will appear on the instrument panel. For greater clarity, we provide video instructions that show how to twist the speedometer.

Twisted Mileage Facts

Using the method described above, you can truly write off the kilometers you have logged without leaving a trace. But when it comes to more expensive cars, things are not so simple. For example, in modern BMWs, mileage is recorded in several blocks at once. It is quite simple to remove the accumulated kilometers from the unit responsible for the speedometer and odometer readings on the dashboard. But removing the memory of kilometers from the ABS unit or key is more difficult. Therefore, many would-be outbids or the owners themselves often do not want to spend additional funds on this. Therefore, twisted kilometers can be easily determined by simply connecting special diagnostic equipment. In most cases, the mileage of a car is not determined by the odometer readings, but by the condition of the paintwork, interior, and some components and assemblies. Experienced car owners will trust these certificates.

Required equipment and sequence of work

One of the main features of adjusting readings is the impossibility of working with flash memory while it is installed in the microcircuit.

Therefore, the initial stage of work comes down to dismantling the dashboard and completely disassembling it to remove the board.

Then you need to find flash memory on the board.

It is usually located near the board's central processor. You can recognize it by the fact that it is soldered to the board using 8 legs, 4 on both sides.

Flash memory might look like this.

Or so.

It all depends on the make of the car.

This flash memory needs to be desoldered from the board. To do this, you need to use a low-power soldering iron so as not to damage the tracks leading to this board.

Next, you will need to use a special device - a programmer.

This programmer is assembled from three 4.7 kOhm resistors, a COM connector that will connect the programmer to the computer, and three zener diodes.

The flash memory will be powered from the computer, for which you need to connect the COM connector to any red and black wires in the system unit.

It is important not to confuse the polarity - the red wire has positive polarity, and the black wire has negative polarity.

Other homemade devices for adjusting the odometer.

In addition to the programmer, you will also need to have the appropriate programs on your computer.

One of the programs is called PonyProg, but you can also find analogues of it.

You will also need a mileage calculator, for example, TachoSoft, which converts the digital mileage value into hexadecimal code; it is in the form of this code that mileage data is stored on flash memory.

Let's sum it up

You can twist the mileage quite simply. This process is not difficult at all. It is enough to determine what readings on the odometer you want to see. It does not matter whether we are talking about a mechanical or electronic speedometer. The essence will always be the same. But it is worth remembering that mileage cheating is actually a crime for which compensation can be demanded through the court or the transaction can be canceled without any problems. Then you will have to return the money for the car and endure the most unpleasant moments after the sale. In most cases, cheating mileage does not pay for itself; it is better not to engage in such deception.

It must be said that in European countries it is not customary to inflate mileage, but in the CIS, every third seller on the market does this. Therefore, mileage has long ceased to be a determining factor in purchasing a car. Most likely, you will not be able to obtain certain benefits from rolling up the odometer readings. However, until twisting tools are blocked by manufacturers, our car sellers will actively use these tools. Have you ever checked the mileage of a car before selling it?

Check the mileage on a VAZ

Attention! We openly declare that we can change the mileage or, on the contrary, increase the mileage on any VAZ models. Mileage adjustment is offered to both Lada owners of older models and those who want to increase the mileage on a Lada even of the newest models.

In more detail, we can reduce mileage and offer competent, safe, reliable mileage adjustment to both owners of VAZ 2107, VAZ 2112, VAZ 2114, and owners of Lada Kalina, Lada Priora, Lada Vesta, Lada Granta, Lada Largus and Lada XRAY.

Consequences of determining the actual mileage during twisting

If you misread the mileage on your car and a potential buyer finds it out, you have lost a potential customer. It would have been much better to show real mileage data and make a discount for the age of the car. Then the buyer would not have any complaints against you and would have purchased a car with predictable problems. Also, many people do not think about the fact that by increasing the mileage, they violate service intervals, which can lead to unexpected car breakdowns. The consequences of such exposure can be very different:

These are the unpleasant consequences that a banal mileage twist can bring. In fact, it turns out that reducing the mileage readings can only help if the car’s travel history is no longer at all acceptable. This is 500 thousand kilometers and more - such a car simply will not be noticed on the automobile market or on a website with advertisements for sale. However, even in this case, it is better to reduce the cost as much as possible and sell the car for little money than to take responsibility for essentially a crime. We offer a short video about the topic of checking mileage on used cars:

I got a job as a driver for a seven. The mileage on the speedometer is 11 thousand, but according to accounting it should be 16 thousand at the moment. They say turn the speedometer forward. I can technically imagine how to do this - disconnect the cable from the box and wind it with an electric drill or motor. But the question is, at what speed will it move? How many revolutions will I give with a drill or no more than 180 km/h like the maximum speed on the speedometer? And will I break the speedometer at high speeds? If it’s not more than 180 km/h, then I’ll have to spend a lot of hours doing it, then I’ll say let whoever wants to do it do it))))

    bogdanovchar, take the speedometer apart and turn it up as much as necessary. If you are afraid, use a drill to twist the cable up to a speed of 180 km/h. In time it will be 5000/180=27.8 hours))))

  • We turned 12 V motors through the battery. In 2-3 years up to 400 km. The speedometer does not break there; the spring is spiral. Ale, you need a couple of thousand - just checking the odometer. Injection is simpler through a pin in the skin of the machine in its own way.

    How to twist a mechanical speedometer?

    Most older cars and some newer domestic vehicles have mechanical speedometers. This is not the most reliable, but it is a fairly cheap and simple option for calculating kilometers traveled. In fact, such speedometers are the easiest to twist; mileage readings are almost never saved in other places, since they are impossible to count. The speedometer is twisted using the following simple and effective processes:

    • it is necessary to disassemble the speedometer to get directly to the kilometer counting mechanism and dial;
    • using a special tool, slightly press out the fasteners holding the numbers in place;
    • the digital field is set to the required value that the car owner wants to see;
    • then you need to skillfully screw in all the fasteners with the necessary effort so as not to break the delicate mechanism;
    • then the speedometer is installed back into the instrument panel and tested for working condition;
    • You can check the operation of the speedometer very simply - insert the cable and turn it by hand to evaluate the movement of all the arrows and numbers.

    There is another method that does not require removing the speedometer from the instrument panel. To twist the mechanical odometer, it is enough to remove the entire shield and unscrew the cable from the speed sensor in the box. This will allow you to rotate the cable in a different direction using a drill or some other device and obtain the necessary mileage readings. But not all speedometers allow such twisting. Some devices have reverse reading protection.

    How do you check your car's mileage using the Carly app?

    Checking your car with the Carly app only takes half a minute. So, even before concluding a car purchase and sale transaction, you can easily independently check on the spot the veracity of the odometer reading. Here's how it works:

    Step 1:

    The Bluetooth adapter sold with the Carly app connects to your vehicle's OBD II port. In most cars this connector is located in the steering column or at the bottom of the dashboard. On some vehicles, the diagnostic connector is located in or under the glove compartment. In some cars, access to connect to the engine control unit is located in the engine compartment. If you don't know where it is located in your car, check your manual.

    Step 2:

    The Carly program connects wirelessly to the Bluetooth adapter that you installed in the OBD II connector. With just a few clicks on your smartphone or tablet, you can launch the used car mileage check feature.

    Step 3:

    Reading the data only takes about 20-30 seconds.

    Step 4:

    If your car's mileage has previously been adjusted in a simple way, the Carly app will alert you by showing an exclamation point on the screen.

    You can download the application for iPhone smartphones | |
