Speedometer fails on grant. Why the speedometer does not work on the Lada Grant, Kalina and Priora, and how to deal with it

One of the most important devices of any car is the speedometer. Driving a car with a faulty device is unacceptable. It is needed not only to control driving speed. Incorrect readings can lead to malfunctions of machine or engine components. The speedometer will also tell you when it is necessary to change filters or engine fluid. What to do if the speedometer on a Lada Granta car does not work? Many car owners will say that you should not try to solve this problem yourself if you have never had to do anything like this before. But how else can you figure it out and learn how to repair a speedometer, if you don’t try to make the repair yourself?

How to identify a malfunction

The breakdown of such an important element immediately makes itself felt.

Speedometer failure can be assumed if:

  • while driving, the instrument needle sometimes or constantly lies at zero;
  • unstable operation in idle mode is observed;
  • engine thrust has noticeably decreased;
  • the speedometer functions, but its readings do not correspond to reality;
  • the warning light is on, indicating the need to check the engine;
  • fuel consumption has increased.

Causes

Before you begin repairs, you need to determine why the speedometer is not working. All repair actions will depend on the cause of the breakdown.

One of the most common causes of speedometer failure is a broken cable. Such a breakdown is easy to detect - the steel ends of the cable touch the shell when the car is moving. Because of this, a characteristic sound is heard in the area of the shield.

Another cause of malfunction may be blown fuses. Poor contact connections can also lead to damage to the speedometer. Perhaps the reason is not serious. For example, a broken arrow can also distort the readings or not give them at all. In this case, it is enough to just replace one part.

Please note that due to the peculiar location of the speedometer in this Lada car model, the cause of failure is often water or dirt that gets into it. In this case, if the damage is not too severe, it will be enough to dry and clean it.

Lada Granta why the speedometer does not work

I have a Kalina from the 10th year, I’ve already changed 2 sensors, they stopped working, I don’t have any chips, many people say that just remove the chips and the problem will go away, it didn’t help me, there are no chips, I had to install a new one

the same crap happened, bought a sensor for Kalina2, installed it, it shows less, but it turned out that I had a Priorovskaya box, I had to take another one

10/14/2017 – 04:11 Valera Kulik

everything with the first numbers 1118 is a viburnum, and the rest of the numbers are similar, I encountered this too, on my viburnum there are 2 pillars Priorovskaya box with the first numbers 2170, and the rest are the same as with the Kolin sensor

04.10.2017 – 13:56 Yuri Meleshkin

Thanks for the video I replaced the sensor and the machine works correctly again

Good afternoon, could you please tell me if I have a Lada Granta 2012, I lose speed when driving, I take my foot off the gas and put it back on, I continue driving, what is causing this, thanks in advance

07/22/2017 – 13:35 Vladimir Smir

Good evening. Tell me, where did you buy this computer?

07/19/2017 – 05:41 Uraxa 32

For e-gas, even if you remove the plug for a month, the error will not go away. The ECU is designed differently; it has energy-independent memory. forget about the terminals.

changed 5 dachas in four years

02.06.2017 – 10:15 Erbol Taldybaev

Good evening, I have a grant of 14 g, mileage is 38 thousand, the speed shows that no, it writes an error of 500, tell me, beaver people, what’s going on

05/08/2017 – 14:31 Viktor Sankov

Very good and useful video. My Lada's speedometer doesn't work either. I will repair it the same way. Thanks to the author of the video.

04/16/2017 – 18:36 Viktor Sankov

I have a question for the author of the video. When you remove the sensor, you first need to separate the electrical wires. How to remove the wires? Just pull them up or something else? there is a bracket or some kind of clamp, what should I do with this figurine? Explain, please.

04/14/2017 – 10:45 Alexander Glazkov

04—manufacturer -Kursk, 02—manufacturer Kaluga, don’t look at the numbers at the end, but just look for the Prior sensor. Don’t repeat my mistake, I walked around half the city looking for exactly the same sensor as the one I had. In the end, I bought the exact same one, and it’s from Kalina. It didn’t fit - the number of pulses is 3 times less, the speed shows accordingly.

04/05/2017 – 11:38 Azamat Karatayev

Hello Alexander, please tell me what signs you had when the sensor broke down? By the speedometer?

03/22/2017 – 01:22 Azamat Karatayev

Thank you It’s just that the EUR failed for me too. I think that’s where my legs grow too

02/20/2017 – 03:21 Alibek Kozhanov

Hello Alexander, my speedometer sensor fell off, I bought it without diagnostics and put it back in place

Diagnostics

First you need to check the electrical circuit, since damage to its integrity can lead to damage to the Lada Granta speedometer:

  • turn off the power;
  • carefully inspect all contacts;
  • If contamination or oxidation is detected, clean.

When inspecting, pay special attention to the wires near the plug. They have a bend that can damage their insulation.

After inspecting the electrical circuit, it is necessary to measure the resistance in the grounding circuit. It should be 1 ohm.

If no problems are found in the circuit, then the problem is in the speed sensor.

All Lada speed sensors operate using the Hall effect and have three contacts:

  • voltage;
  • grounding;
  • pulse signal.

The contacts are checked for voltage and grounding. If the voltage is less than 12 V or completely absent, this means that the power circuit, the electronic control unit is damaged, or the battery is dead. The most accurate and easiest way to check the device is to temporarily replace it with a working one.

Be careful! In the Lada Granta, the speedometer is located inconveniently, it is difficult to replace, and the sensor can be damaged.

Principle of operation

Manufacturers have equipped the car model in question with an electronic speedometer. Such a system calculates speed as accurately as possible with a minimum percentage of errors. The system consists of the following elements:

  1. The speedometer itself is a completely electronic device with a minimum number of mechanical parts. It works using signals received from the on-board computer.
  2. An on-board computer, a device necessary for calculating incoming data.
  3. A system of electrical wires that provide power to the speedometer components.
  4. A fuse is necessary to protect against electrical overloads and short circuits.
  5. Speed sensor, the main element of the system. It is used to calculate the speed characteristics while driving.

So, next we’ll look at how the whole system works. Its main element is the speed sensor or EMF. The device operates on the principle of a Hall ignition and distribution system. The EMF is installed on the gearbox near the flywheel. The flywheel has a special risk. When this risk passes by the EMF, the contact inside the sensor opens. This creates an electrical impulse. As the speed of the vehicle increases, the number of such “openings” increases, which means more pulse discharges are created.

The pulses are sent through the wire to the computer, where the number of signals per unit of time is automatically calculated. Secondary confirmation comes in the form of pulses from the crankshaft position sensor. The on-board computer transmits the received data to the receiver - the speedometer drive. Depending on the magnitude of the received signals, the drive deflects the instrument needle by a certain degree.

The system is very reliable; it allows the on-board computer, based on the data received, to distribute the amount of combustible mixture into the engine, regulate the mixture of gasoline and air, maintaining optimal engine speed. Next, the symptoms of damage to the electronic speedometer of a Lada Granta will be described.

Replacement

It is necessary to remove the speed sensor very carefully. You will see that there is a thick pipe going from the air filter to the throttle body. It needs to be disconnected to improve access. After the pipe is disconnected, the speedometer is removed.

  1. Disconnect the power plug from the speed sensor.
  2. Using a wrench, unscrew the screw securing the gearbox sensor.
  3. Using a screwdriver, pry up the resulting hole and remove the device.
  4. Inspect the seat and the removed wire. If contamination is found, clean it.
  5. Also inspect the gearbox. If oil stains are found, replace the O-ring.
  6. The new or repaired device is installed in place.
  7. Assemble the drive.

The design of the speedometer is based on electronics. But, nevertheless, almost anyone can fix its breakdowns.

If you doubt the result of the repair, or you were unable to complete it, it is better to seek help or advice from a professional auto mechanic. If the car's warranty has not yet expired, you should not start repairing it yourself, even if you are confident in your abilities.

A speedometer malfunction is a very serious failure and should not be allowed to occur under any circumstances. A timely solution to the problem will prevent disruptions to the operation of other vehicle mechanisms.

Where is the speed sensor on the Lada Granta: photo and price

Car: Lada Granta. Engine: 21116. Asked by: Damir.

Yesterday I came home, started climbing onto the curb and slightly hit the bottom of the car. And then it started. The speedometer needle began to dance, at first it seemed to me that it was even accompanied by music. Then it twitched at zero, twitched to 200, and fell again. No errors occurred; the engine warning light did not light up on the instrument panel.

She didn't get up again. I drove around the yard, looked smartly under the hood, and screwed in all the chips I saw. Did not help.

Knowledgeable people said that the speed sensor was broken, quite logical, but where is it located? I went to a car store to buy a new one to check, the store is good, they accept returns if there was no loss of presentation. And the seller told me that when the speed sensor breaks down, the electric power steering also doesn’t work, but for me it works.

Speed sensor location

An expert on Lada cars with many years of experience. I own a Lada Granta car, I collect cramps based on the Priora. Sometimes I stay overnight in the garage. My wife is more jealous of cars than of women.

The speed sensor on the Lada Granta is located between the BDZ (throttle valve unit) and the brake fluid reservoir.

Replacing the speed sensor

  1. The sensor can be removed by removing the air filter and inlet pipe.

Remove the pipe and move the air filter housing to the side

  • The sensor is secured with a nut, which can be easily unscrewed with a regular 10 mm wrench.
  • Unscrew the nut, disconnect the chip, and remove the speed sensor.

  • Nut 10 and the chip is removed

    After you have removed the sensor, clean it; debris may have gotten on it. Since its body consists of a magnet, it could become clogged when it hits a curb.

    New and old speed sensor

    However, this is unlikely; most likely it has failed and requires replacement. But if there was dirt on it, then there is a chance that it is working. Put it back, connect the chip and test drive it to check.

    Electric power steering failure due to speed sensor failure

    Indeed, if the speed sensor breaks down, the electric power steering in some cars fails, and error P-0501 (Vehicle speed sensor signal outside the permissible range) should appear on the instrument panel. That's why the steering wheel refuses, so that the car understands that the sensor is broken. In your case, the nature of the failure said that the sensor shows zero speed.

    Failure of the electric power steering may indicate a breakdown of the speed sensor!

    Sensor price

    A speed sensor costs from 300 to 600 rubles.
