Every grant driver knows about the problems of the standard generator on the Lada Grant. However, they are in no hurry to eliminate the defect in mass production. Support (rolling) bearings often fail. While driving, extraneous noise appears, a metallic grinding sound.

Algorithm of actions:

- The key is set to “13”, release the upper lock of the generator, move it to the right until it stops.

Replacing the VAZ 2190 alternator belt
According to the maintenance regulations, the condition of the drive belt must be checked every 15 thousand km, and the part must be changed every 30 thousand km, even if it is visually in good condition. The 8-valve Granta power unit does not provide a device for tensioning the belt, therefore, it is considered a disposable consumable, i.e. its repeated installation is not allowed.
To independently check this rubber product, you need to perform a few simple manipulations. 5th gear is engaged first. Then you need to lean on the front bumper and try to roll the car away from you, while at the same time assessing the appearance of the belt. It should not have even small cracks, not to mention peeling and ruptures, which often appear during prolonged use.
Replacing the Lada Granta alternator belt begins with its purchase. Usually the original spare part is not very expensive. Characteristics of the Lada Granta belt:

To work you will need a minimum set of tools:
- stationery knife;
- screwdriver or long mounting blade;
- key to "13".
Replacement is carried out as follows:
- Remove the old belt. To do this, it is most convenient to cut it with a knife.
- Unscrew the lower mounting bolt of the unit two or three turns using a “13” key.
- Unscrew the nut and remove the mounting bolt from above.
- Now, being careful, you need to try to rotate the generator so that the eye on top can go beyond the protrusion of the bracket. The generator should be pressed against it and secured with available materials. An ordinary wire will do, with which it is tied to the cylinder head cover nut.
- Place the belt on the pulleys first.
- Turn on the fifth speed, at the same time press the belt against the pulley (outside help is needed). The car should be pushed again so that the belt is in its place.
- Remove the wire and, armed with a screwdriver, press the generator at the point of contact with the bracket, and then screw the bolt into the upper mount.
Next, all that remains is to tighten the nut and tighten the lower fastening. This concludes the procedure.
Replacing a generator on a Lada Granta with air conditioning
At the preparatory stage we will need the above tools and materials.
Sequencing:
- After unscrewing the converter mounts, hang up the front of the car, unscrew the bolts, and remove the right wheel.
- Through the opening in the wheel arch we unscrew the tension roller and the engine mount mount.
- We lower the car with a jack until access to the generator opens.
- The further dismantling algorithm is no different from that described above.

The rectifier module is designed to convert alternating current into direct current. It is based on six silicon diodes (gates): three positive and three negative. They are located on two horseshoe-shaped plates. To smooth out voltage surges, the terminals of the positive and negative diodes are connected through a 2.2 μF capacitor.
How to check the generator on a VAZ-2110 for the functionality of the rectifier unit with your own hands? To do this, you will need a regular car tester or test lamp. The essence of the test is based on the ability of diodes to pass current in only one direction. A faulty valve either does not pass current at all, or passes in both directions.
So, first you need to remove the casing of the rectifier unit. Next, connect the first wire of the test lamp to the “B+” terminal of the generator, and the second to the ground of the device. If the unit is working properly, the lamp should not light up. If it lights up, there is a short circuit in the rectifier and it needs to be replaced.
Don't be lazy to check the capacitor as well. Turn the tester into ohmmeter mode (1-10 MOhm) and measure its resistance. For a working capacitor, it should first take a minimum value and then gradually increase. If this does not happen, replace the capacitor.

Principle of operation
In order for the generator to supply current to the load, the field winding must be energized. This, in fact, happens when we turn on the ignition. Next, the crankshaft of a running engine causes the armature to rotate. At this time, electricity begins to be generated in the stator winding, which is sent to the on-board network.
In VAZ-2110 cars, the generator produces alternating current, and all consumers are designed for direct current. To convert it, a rectifying diode unit is used.
But that's not all. The fact is that the voltage produced by the generator constantly changes depending on the number of crankshaft revolutions. To stabilize it, a voltage regulator relay is used.
As a result, at the terminals of the device we have a constant electric current of stable voltage.

Due to its smaller height, Bosch 110A is 10 mm lower than its analogue. Despite the minor advantages, BOSCH has one “fat” drawback - there is no possibility of quick (cold) replacement of the diode bridge in the event of its failure.

Possible faults

Instructions for removing the generator
Let's start by describing the process of removing the generator from an eight-valve car that is not equipped with air conditioning. You need to start by disconnecting the “ground” from the battery, for which you remove the negative terminal (this manipulation must be carried out when removing this unit from any modification of the Grant, this will help to avoid a short circuit). Further actions are performed in the following order:
- the bolts on which the motor protection is attached are unscrewed, after which it is removed;
- disconnect the block with wires from the generator;
- after removing the protective cap of the nut holding the power drive, the nut itself is unscrewed and the wire is disconnected from the generator;
- then the upper mounting nut of the generator is unscrewed, and the unit is pressed out using a mounting spatula, and the upper mounting bolt is also removed at the same time;
- the lower fastening nut is unscrewed, the generator is carefully moved away from the engine, and the fastening bolt located below is pulled out;
- the generator is shifted to the right mudguard, the belt is removed from its pulley, the generator itself is pulled out;
- The process is completed by removing the belt from the crankshaft pulley.
Now let's look at a similar process carried out on a sixteen-valve Grant without air conditioning. Such machines are equipped with belt tensioners, and therefore the work described has some differences. So:

Until recently, the Grants produced by the Volzhsky Automobile Plant were equipped with KZATE 115A generators with a rated voltage of 14 V and a maximum electric current of 115 A. Car owners often complained about the low quality of the diode bridges of these units, and many other questions also arose, for example, regarding the quality of its assembly.
A much more reliable, and now the most widespread, generator is the Bosch 135 Ampere generator, which all Grants have been equipped with over the past few years. Such generators cost approximately 5,000 rubles, but do not have any serious complaints in terms of quality. A fairly powerful unit 9402 is also suitable for Grant.
Separately, it is worth mentioning the generator belts. Their recommended service life on Grants is similar to the warranty period of the car, but, as experience shows, the belt breaks after about 5,000 km. However, preventing belt rupture is quite possible; this is facilitated by regular checks of its condition, ideally carried out before each trip.
It is also important for the owner of the Grant not to miss the moment of replacement. It is not difficult to understand that a possible belt rupture is imminent - it begins to make whistling sounds when the engine is not warmed up and in damp weather.
