- High cost of repairs. Despite the fact that electric amplifiers themselves are quite durable systems, malfunctions can still occur in their operation over time. If the unit fails, the cost of repair will not be cheap, especially since repairing the unit at home is more problematic than power steering.
- The power reserve of electric amplifiers is small. That is why such systems are not installed on SUVs, minibuses, pickups, etc. Accordingly, this is another plus in favor of installing a hydraulic booster on the UAZ.
DIY installation instructions for power steering
Before installation, prepare the installation kit, the procedure is described briefly:
- First you need to dismantle the steering bipod and then bend it. To do this, the bipod must be heated; to prevent deformation, the cone along with the spline must be installed with the inserts inward.
- Then a bracket for the transverse rod is made, it can be made from a sawn-off shank from a GAZ 66 car, the most optimal option since the internal diameter is the same. The bracket should not be completely welded; it is best to make the seam along the rod itself, this will increase the strength.
- The next step is to install the power steering cylinder. For installation you will need a special bracket; you can purchase it or make it yourself.
- The bracket itself will need to be welded, or entirely.
- Further installation of the cylinder on the bracket is carried out in the same plane as the bridge.
- The hydraulic cylinder rod should be set to the middle position when the vehicle wheels are straight. By doing this, you can determine where to install the tie rod clamp. Then this element also needs to be welded.
- The unit is being assembled. A reservoir for working fluid is installed, and all hoses necessary for normal operation are connected. The tank must be installed in a convenient place, but remember that the hoses should not be bent in any case. After assembling the system, you need to pour oil into the reservoir.
- Then the front part of the car is jacked up, the steering wheel needs to be turned in different directions, holding the steering wheels in extreme positions. The engine starts, the procedure is repeated - this way you can pump the liquid through the pipes.
Steering of the UAZ Hunter with power steering, principle of operation, failure of the power steering
The UAZ Hunter steering system consists of a power steering mechanism, a steering column with a steering and propeller shaft, a steering wheel and a steering gear which includes two tie rods connected by ball joints to the steering knuckles of the front suspension.
The steering wheel is mounted on the splines of the steering column shaft and attached to the shaft with a nut. The steering shaft is mounted in the steering column tube on two bearings and transmits torque from the steering wheel to the steering mechanism through a driveshaft consisting of a splined shaft, a sliding fork and universal joints.
The steering gear is of the screw-ball nut-sector type, installed in the engine compartment, the steering gear housing is bolted to the frame. The connections between the hoses and the steering mechanism are sealed with copper washers. The power steering reservoir is installed in the engine compartment on the left mudguard bracket and is connected by a hose to the power steering pump and to the hydraulic fluid return line.

To do this, I sawed the steering shaft and ultimately extended it through a piece of smooth reinforcement along the inner diameter of the shaft pipe. And in the area where the shaft connects to the gearbox, I welded a cardan. This made it possible to compensate for the changed shaft angle due to the body lift.
One of the disadvantages of this approach is that the opportunity to run the biblika wire inside the shaft pipe is lost... But. Art requires sacrifice!
To install the power steering, a power steering pump from Patriot brand “ZF” and a five-groove pulley were purchased. The belts on the ZMZ-409 are five-strand. High pressure hoses were manufactured in a specialized office. We purchased a bracket for the power steering pump. And a belt was selected, which was 1119 mm long.
We throw out the tension roller and put the power steering bracket in its place.
But even here there are some surprises. Do you see the top bracket bolt? But it won’t get out completely unless you remove the pulley...
Then we install the power steering bracket for the pump.
In principle, the pump can already be installed. But for now we don’t have space to install a power steering reservoir.
I found a great place for it, but to install it there it was necessary to make a new mount. I made it from a 2mm strip of metal. Painted it with auto enamel.
As a result, the tank fell into place and access to it is convenient and not difficult.
Next, we simply connect the line with the hydraulic cylinder, power steering pump and spool valve.
All. All that remains is to fill in dextron and bleed the system of air. The power steering from GAZ-66 is installed on the loaf and works.

The installation of a hydraulic booster on a UAZ is carried out in several stages:
- First, the second pulley is installed to install the strap. Attach the device, measure all the necessary distances, after you understand how to align the pulley, install it and tighten the bolts (you need to use longer ones, since your family won’t). The pulley itself must be pressed onto the existing crankshaft pulley.
- The next step is to install the bracket on the power unit. Take the bracket that will secure the UAZ power steering pump and install it in the place where the fuel filter is mounted, secure all the nuts. There is still room for a third fastening, but since there is no corresponding hole for fixing, you will have to drill it yourself, and for this you will have to remove the valve cover. Before drilling, all holes into which metal shavings can enter must be closed. After completing these steps, the pump itself is installed on the pulley and bracket, then the strap is put on.
- If necessary, the steering gearbox, as well as the fitting head, will need to be sharpened.
- Then this gearbox is installed on the frame, and all open areas must be painted over. The high pressure line must be fixed in the gearbox, after which this element is removed from the bottom side of the radiator device and fixed using the existing bolts.
- At the final stage, the expansion tank and all remaining lines are installed, as well as the system is pumped. The tank can be installed in any convenient place, but keep in mind that the lines should not be bent. In addition, the liquid level in the tank should in any case be higher than in the pump. When the lines are installed, the working fluid is poured into the tank, and the pumping itself is carried out on suspended wheels.

Examples have been given more than once when the most difficult tasks in Russian regions were handled exclusively by vehicles of the UAZ 452 type. It’s not every day that you can use a heavy-duty URAL or an expensive foreign-made SUV. But for UAZ, the issue of modernizing the existing design is relevant. Because, despite the excellent maneuverability, the ease of control for the driver is not always at the desired level.

When the steering wheel rotates, the steering mechanism screw is screwed in or out of the piston nut, which, in turn, moves along with the spool. The fluid pressure in one of the cavities of the steering mechanism increases - the piston nut moves. Moving, the piston nut turns the shaft of the steering bipod, which, in turn, turns the steered wheels through the steering linkage rods. The working fluid, having passed through the steering mechanism, returns to the power steering reservoir through the outlet hose.
In power steering, the pressure of the working fluid is created by a vane-type pump mounted on the engine bracket. The pump is driven by a V-belt from the engine crankshaft pulley. A flow safety valve installed in the pump maintains the required pressure of the working fluid in the power steering system depending on the engine speed.
Noise in the power steering system of the UAZ Hunter
When turning the front wheels to the right or left all the way, noise or a hum may appear in the power steering system, which occurs due to the power steering pump reaching maximum pressure. Such noise or hum is a characteristic sign of pump operation and does not affect the performance of the steering as a whole.

The steering of the UAZ Hunter, depending on the configuration of the car and its year of manufacture, could be equipped with steering mechanisms screw - ball nut - sector with hydraulic booster, manufactured by INMASH, Sterlitamak or BZAGU, Borisov, of two types, differing in the type of distributor: shaft-spool or shaft -rotor.
On vehicles with steering gear 31519-3400011-10, the cardan joint is attached to the steering gear shaft with a bolt, and on steering gear 31519-3400011-20: with a wedge with a washer and nut.

If the hydraulic booster fails, the ability to drive the car remains, but the force on the steering wheel increases noticeably. If there is no oil in the power steering system due to damage to the pump or destruction of the hoses, it is necessary to remove the drive belt, otherwise the power steering pump may jam and the belt may break.
When the pump drive belt is removed on a UAZ Hunter with a ZMZ-409 engine, it is necessary to control the coolant temperature, since overheating of the engine is quite possible. Long-term operation of a vehicle with a non-working power steering leads to premature wear of the steering mechanism parts.

The main thing is not to unscrew the shaft from the piston, otherwise you will have problems for an hour. There are balls inside, which are difficult to put back in place later.

When disassembling, I saw why the leak started, due to the fact that the cover was not secured and the ingress of dirt and water caused corrosion and risks on the shaft, in short, it’s an ass, I don’t know if new cuffs will help
Without thinking for a long time, I decided to make a protective cap against dirt and, if I’m lucky, against oil leaks if that happens over time. To do this, I drilled two holes and cut threads for screws.

I assembled everything, adjusted all the gaps, by eye of course, and put it in place. No leaks yet. The autopsy had almost no effect on the work of the GUR. Only by ear it seems to be buzzing less, but that’s how it is by ear. Operation will show.
