How to adjust gas on a VAZ 2107 carburetor

  • Final adjustment of the gearbox. The adjustment is carried out in several stages: adjusting the idle speed, adjusting the sensitivity of the gas reducer (the speed of the engine response to pressing the gas pedal), adjusting the dispenser and the final adjustment, which consists of adjusting the sensitivity of the reducer and dispenser. This procedure deserves a detailed description in a separate article.
    A correctly configured VAZ 2107 gas system almost completely preserves the dynamic performance of the engine. When switching gas-gasoline modes while driving, there should be no “dips” or jerks.

    Propane consumption is 10-20% more than gasoline consumption under the same operating conditions. It should be remembered that the LPG VAZ 2107 (carburetor) is much more demanding on the condition of the spark plugs and air filter. You should also slightly change the settings of the spark plugs, reducing the gap between the electrodes, so the working environment when working on a gas-air mixture has a slightly higher breakdown voltage. Misfired spark plugs cause “popping” noises, which under unfavorable conditions can cause damage to the intake manifold or its gasket.

  • Installing LPG on a classic VAZ 2101-07

    While entering gas equipment into the registration certificate of his car, I met the owner of a Lada 2107, who installed the gas equipment himself, after which he entered it into the registration certificate at the MREO without any problems. Is this really possible? We decided to conduct an experiment.

    To begin with, we studied a diagram of how you can install gas equipment yourself without going beyond the legal framework. Everything turned out to be simple. At the car market or from gas equipment installers, you buy a set of gas equipment with all the components, and then look for installation instructions on the Internet or from the gas specialists themselves. After installing the equipment, you go to the same gas equipment installers, and they pay a fee of 250–350 UAH. check the correctness of installation, if necessary, help set up and issue documents required for entering information about the presence of gas equipment into the vehicle registration certificate. Savings on re-equipment of a carburetor car is 500–800 UAH. For owners of old equipment, this is quite a large amount!

    2200 per set

    The theory is good, but how do you install the equipment yourself on a carburetor car in practice? Having two diplomas in automotive engineering specialties and experience in operating a car with LPG, I decided to check for myself how realistic it is and whether there are any difficulties. Friends suggested taking their VAZ-21011 with a 1.3-liter engine as a test subject. I have a car, now I need equipment. I found it at one of the capital's car markets. The set costs 2200 UAH. included a Lovato Aspirato vacuum reducer (according to experts, it lasts 150–180 thousand km, and the repair kit costs 120–200 UAH), a 50-liter cylindrical cylinder with a Tomasetto multivalve, cylinder fastening clamps, a mixer (popularly called a mixer), a filling station valve, gas supply tee to the carburetor, gas valve, gasoline valve, pipelines for liquefied gas, for gas in the vapor fraction (diameter 19 mm), for gasoline, for water-antifreeze (diameter 19 mm), two tees for connecting to the cooling system , clamps for clamping pipelines, a corrugated hose and plastic flanges for pipelines coming from the multi-valve under the bottom of the car, as well as an LPG control panel. Only special pipelines should be installed, otherwise gas and antifreeze may leak. Since there are no guarantees on the market, it is better to take Lovato or Tomasetto nodes - they are very reliable.

    The gearbox (1) must be vertical and longitudinal in relation to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. Otherwise, during braking, acceleration and on potholes, it will not work correctly due to flexion of the diaphragm. The gas valve (2) must be easily accessible to replace its filter.

    The pipeline should not come into contact with moving parts and should not be on an open plane. Also, it should not be stretched - to compensate for temperature extensions and shortenings.

    The gas supply dispenser to the two carburetor chambers has an adjusting screw that allows you to adjust the optimal gas flow.

    The gasoline electric valve is installed in the circuit after the gasoline pump before the carburetor.

    Installation subtleties

    In order for gas equipment to work normally and not create problems when servicing the car, the installation process should be taken seriously. Thus, it is advisable to place the gearbox in the engine compartment as close as possible to the carburetor and engine cooling jacket. To eliminate the influence of acceleration and deceleration on the gearbox diaphragm, it must stand longitudinally (see photo). In the case of a VAZ classic, it is most convenient to connect it to the stove pipes. To do this, you will have to cut them and insert tees. It is also desirable that the reducer be positioned below the top pipe of the stove to ensure efficient circulation of fluid in the reducer.

    The gasoline solenoid valve is conveniently located on the left side of the engine compartment near the brake master cylinder. It crashes into the hose from the fuel pump to the carburetor. The gas solenoid valve is located on the engine shield on the other side of the compartment. This placement of the valves is also optimal from a safety point of view, since in the event of a frontal collision there is a low probability of hitting the valve.

    The mixer, i.e. the mixer, is installed under the carburetor. To ensure tightness during its installation, you need to use gaskets and preferably sealant, since in old cars the connecting planes of the manifold and carburetor may be deformed or have pockets of corrosion. It is also advisable to grind in the contact surfaces of the carburetor and mixer, otherwise the mixer gasket will burn out.

    To install gas equipment on your own, it is most convenient to use not a copper pipeline, but a special plastic one, since it bends easily and does not require flaring of the ends. And for a sealed connection, special adapters with clamps are used, similar to those used in plumbing with metal-plastic pipes. A plastic pipeline is a little more expensive, but much more convenient to use and, in addition, it does not oxidize under the influence of acids contained in liquefied gas (propane-butane). By the way, oxidation products clog the gas filter faster.

    To mount the cylinder in the trunk shelf above the rear axle, closer to the seats, two holes with a diameter of 10 mm are drilled. The other ends of the mounting clamp (it is better to take a rubberized one) can be attached without drilling the body. To do this, you need two pieces of steel strip 8–10 cm long. A hole is drilled in the center into which a fastening bolt is inserted. It is advisable to secure it with welding or glue. Next, this tee is inserted into the technological window from the side of the mentioned shelf (see photo), and the second ends of the clamp are screwed to it, clamping the cylinder. The cylinder fastener must prevent contact between the metal on the strip and the metal on the cylinder, which is why the tape is laminated. If the homemade product is made from a sheet of metal, you need to place cardboard or rubber.

    How to adjust the gearbox yourself?

    That's all, we figured out a little about how to install gas equipment on a car with a carburetor injection system with your own hands. Now let’s set it up correctly so that the consumption is lower and the throttle response remains the same as on gasoline. To do this, you need to use the following guide. First of all, you adjust the ignition; you need to set it a little earlier - turn the distributor body two notches (this corresponds to 10 degrees).

    To make fine tuning, it is best to use electronic octane correctors. But for their normal functioning, a BSZ will be required. The reason for adjusting the ignition is that gas fuel has an octane rating of over 100. And if the adjustment is not made, the exhaust valves will burn out, and the cost of repairing them will be very significant.

    You adjust the enrichment of the fuel mixture; the screw is located on the evaporator reducer. Make sure that the number of crankshaft revolutions is in the range of 800..900. Now it is necessary to adjust the gas fuel supply. To do this, you will need to screw the bolt on the valve until it stops. Then unscrew it two turns. This should be done with the engine turned off; after unscrewing the valve two turns, you can start it. Listen to how the engine works. If you sharply and briefly press the accelerator pedal, the revolutions should instantly reach 3000.

    In this case, no delays should be observed. If the motor begins to “choke”, it is necessary to rotate the screw counterclockwise until this symptom disappears. You can do the entire setup yourself in just a few minutes, since only three screws can be adjusted. Screw in the second screw until it stops and turn it one turn counterclockwise. Start the engine and sharply depress the accelerator pedal.

    Up to 6500 rpm, the crankshaft should spin up instantly. Please note that the second camera on a VAZ 2106 car should not open in the same way as the first. If it opens too much, the power will increase, but the consumption will increase significantly. And you won't feel any savings. Finally, the normal rotation speed is set by adjusting the XX screw.

    In the West, the birthplace of most automotive technologies, equipment that allows for fuel replacement has appeared a long time ago. Cars designed for gasoline now run on gas. Carburetor cars were common abroad at that time, and the production of injection cars was only gaining momentum.

    Looking at VAZ cars from the perspective of an automotive specialist, one can come to the conclusion that most of the models are outdated. Only the latest cars are equipped with a modern fuel supply system. Taking into account such technical data, motorists often believe that gas at VAZ is unrealistic. However, it is possible to install LPG on a VAZ, and this does not pose a problem, but you need to take into account that all models of this car differ in the nature of the functioning of the fuel system - they can be either carburetor or injection. Installing LPG on a VAZ involves interfering with the fuel system, so for the correct choice of equipment it is important to keep this difference in mind.

    Gas equipment on a VAZ is easy to install with your own hands. To do this, it is enough to buy a complete set of equipment (with all components), read in detail the technical literature on your car and carefully read the recommendations of the LPG manufacturer. When the installation is completed, you need to go to the gas equipment installers so that they check the quality of the equipment installation. In addition, they can assist in issuing documentation indicating that your car is now equipped with LPG.

    The gas installation on the VAZ allows you to save significant amounts of money on fuel. And installing the equipment yourself allows you to save on this service. However, the information presented in the article is offered for informational purposes and cannot serve as instructions for installing LPG. If you feel that your experience with a car is not enough to install an LPG, then it is better to entrust this procedure to specialists.

    How profitable is it to install an LPG cylinder on a VAZ? Let's look at the example of the VAZ 2106. We will mean here the first two stages of equipment development. Representatives of subsequent generations are compatible with injection power plants or electronically controlled diesel ones. In principle, the fourth generation can also be mounted on a carburetor, but this process is too complicated.

    LPG on the second generation VAZ 2110 involves manual control of the supply of the gas mixture to the mixer using a dispenser. Adjustment of the flow occurs due to the movement of the screw, the position of which usually does not change (it is adjusted only if the air filter is clogged).

    In generation III systems, the gasoline supply is shut off not by a valve, but by an injector emulator. Simulating the operation of gas injectors does not allow emergency mode to be activated.

    Installing gas equipment on a fourth-generation VAZ 2110 involves the use of gas injectors that supply gas directly to the intake manifold. They operate under the guidance of an electronic unit.

    Installing 2nd generation HBO on a carburetor

    For installation on a carburetor car, it is most advisable to install 2nd generation LPG. It is best to choose components for installation from more or less well-known manufacturers such as BRC, Lovato, tomasetto. Although it is quite possible that their “Turkish copies” Atiker and others will also work quite adequately. Here it all depends on how much money, who and where will install and configure your gas equipment (some installers do not “like” messing around with installing and configuring “exotic things” such as gas reducers, etc., but this remains on their conscience). In previous articles, the 2nd generation LPG equipment and its detailed review were discussed; in this article we will consider the topic of installing a 2nd generation LPG on a carburetor.

    What gas equipment is best to use for VAZ

    For any car with a carburetor, the 1st or 2nd generation of LPG is better suited. Despite the fact that the 3rd and 4th generations are already being installed in full swing. But there is no point in installing a more modern HBO on a carburetor engine. The first generation differs from the second in little ways - only in the dispenser. The system itself is the same - the hose is connected to the carburetor through an insert into the carburetor. When a vacuum occurs in the intake manifold, it causes gas from the gearbox to flow through the dispenser into the carburetor.

    In the 1st generation of gas equipment, a manual gas dispenser is used; it is enough to put it in the desired position once and there is no need to adjust it again. The 2nd generation has an electronic dispenser, which has a valve that changes its position depending on the readings of the oxygen sensor and the position of the carburetor throttle valve. Now there are many good companies that install 2nd generation gas equipment.

    Cylinder selection

    The first thing you will need to decide is the type and placement of the gas cylinder for your car. For example, for classic VAZ or Moskvich models in a 4-door version, it is better to use a “cigar” type cylinder, which is located behind the rear seats in the trunk.

    For the front-wheel drive VAZ family of three or five door modifications, the optimal choice would be to use a “Thor” type cylinder instead of a spare wheel (which will allow you to easily use the entire trunk volume with the rear seat folded).

    For “Tavriy” and “Slavuta” it is best and most optimal to use a small “cigar” type cylinder located outside the car, which will allow you to “save” the useful volume of the trunk and allow you to use all the advantages of LPG.

    Cylinder equipment

    After choosing the type, size, and manufacturer of the cylinder, we look at what is included in the cylinder package

    For a cylinder of the “Thor” type there must be:

    • ventilation pipe (breather), which is led under the car;
    • a cover with a seal to create a sealed chamber, which in emergency situations will not allow gas to flow into the cabin, but will allow it to escape through the ventilation tube outside the vehicle;

    • clamps;
    • fastening bolts with nuts and washers;
    • original cover bolts that can be quickly unscrewed without tools and manually close the shut-off valve on the multivalve;
    • passport for the cylinder.

    Cylindrical cylinder (“Cigar”)

    For a “cigar” there should be:

    • ventilation box with gasket and lid;
    • fastening tapes;
    • two ventilation tubes (breathers);
    • corrugation connecting the ventilation box with ventilation pipes;
    • clamps for tightening corrugations;
    • tapes for securing the cylinder;
    • passport for the cylinder.

    It is IMPORTANT that the lid itself and the seal of the lid of the torus cylinder are intact, just like in the ventilation box of a cigar, the sealing rubber must be intact exactly like the body and lid of the box. All ventilation hoses must be undamaged and clamped with clamps.

    Multivalve

    Installing 2nd generation gas equipment involves selecting and installing a multi-valve. After selecting a cylinder, select the appropriate multivalve for it. Based on experience, it is best to use a class “A” multivalve with an electric coil, which can be used to shut off the supply of liquid propane-butane to the flow line.

    Multivalves from Lovato and Tomasseto have performed well in operation. The multivalve must have an O-ring and screws to secure it to the cylinder. Before installing the multivalve into the cylinder, it is necessary to check the ease of movement of the float and the operation of the shut-off valves. When installing, it is advisable to lubricate the rubber O-ring of the multivalve with a thin layer of silicone grease.

    The multivalve can be supplied with or without a filling device. The filling device is selected based on the customer’s wishes and the technical feasibility of installation. Refueling devices are mounted either in the refueling hatch near the neck of the gas tank (for refueling you will need to have an extension cord with you). Or you can mount the refueling device in the bumper or under it, based on the installation capabilities of a specific car model.

    The filling device and the cylinder are connected to each other by a line with a diameter of 8 mm to speed up the filling process.

    Installing a 2nd generation gas equipment the next step involves installing a gearbox. The choice of a gas evaporator reducer consists of selecting a reducer based on power for a specific car model (with a small reserve of reducer power). For example, for classic and standard carburetor front-wheel drive VAZs, a Tomasetto AT 07 gas reducer with a power of 100 hp is sufficient, which already has a built-in filter for cleaning the liquid fraction of propane-butane and an electric valve for supplying/cutting off gas to the car engine.

    If the selected evaporator reducer does not have a propane-butane liquid fraction filter, it is necessary to additionally install a coarse filter in front of the reducer, it is best if the design is assembled with a gas solenoid valve.

    After selecting the reducer, evaporator and filter (if necessary) are mounted on the car. When installing the evaporator gearbox, attention should be paid to the correct installation in order to subsequently avoid the negative impact of acceleration/braking on the operation of the vehicle.

    For example, according to the technical requirements of the manufacturer Tomasetto, the evaporator gearbox must be located along the axis of movement of the vehicle in order to eliminate the influence of membrane inertia during acceleration/braking.

    Also, when installing the gearbox, you should take into account its height position relative to the cooling circuit; the gearbox should not be the highest point, otherwise it will be susceptible to the formation of vapor locks.

    The coolant supply should also be provided with an antifreeze hose with an internal diameter no smaller than the outer fittings on the evaporator reducer. It is advisable to power the evaporator reducer parallel to the “stove” by inserting the appropriate tees. These measures will ensure a reliable supply of the required amount of heat to evaporate the propane-butane mixture during the cold season.

    What to consider?

    Yes, there are many nuances that you should definitely follow when installing an LPG on a VAZ 2106 car. The article contains a video that talks in more detail about all the subtleties. However, this section will be relevant for any make and model of car, as it describes the intricacies of installing gas equipment. Let's start from the very beginning - with the balloon. It must be placed in such a way that the axis of the multivalve is located at an angle to the horizontal plane.

    Moreover, the angle should be exactly 30 degrees. Not a degree more or less. If installed at a different angle, the FLS will show “weather” and the fuel intake from the tank will be unstable. Therefore, when installation is carried out, you need to pay attention to all, even the most insignificant, points, otherwise the cost of incorrect installation will be incredibly high.

    The refueling fitting on a VAZ 2106 car is best secured in the rear, right under the bumper. The line is laid along the bottom of the car. All this work should be carried out in an inspection hole, since it is almost impossible to install tubes without it. Laying them with your own hands is quite simple. The main thing is to install the line next to the gasoline line. You can even attach it to the gasoline pipe using plastic ties.

    There are no special requirements for the fuel selection button. The most important condition is that it is convenient to turn it on. To install the gasoline valve, you need to cut the fuel hose between the pump and the carburetor. But the gas one must be installed in the engine compartment on the right side. Pay attention to the installation of the evaporator reducer. It is not difficult to install it with your own hands, but you must adhere to some requirements:

    1. Its location should be lower than the uppermost pipe going to the stove.
    2. Its location should be longitudinal, this will avoid problems with the diaphragm during sudden acceleration or braking.

    The installation of the mixer also has some features. It is installed in the carburetor, located between two halves - the throttle body and the carburetor itself. Of course, the height increases, so you need to purchase the required number of bolts. Their length should be three turns longer than the standard ones.

    Connection and trunk

    After installation, the reducer is connected to the gas supply line passing under the car body. The choice of material for the supply line is at the discretion of the customer, but mainly behind a thermoplastic tube (usually a 6 mm line is used for a carburetor passenger car).

    The main line is laid away from hot parts and parts subject to constant movement. For installation, staples with self-tapping screws and plastic disposable ties are used (the staples and screws should preferably be galvanized, or better yet, stainless, and the ties are weather-resistant and ozone-resistant).

    Mixer type

    Next, determine the type of mixer that will be used for the car:

    • The upper “turtle” mixer does not require modification of the carburetor. Placed between the carburetor and air filter. Sometimes it requires modifications to the air cleaner housing during installation;

    • spacer in the carburetor (installed mainly in the “Ozone” type carburetor);

    • inserts into the carburetor (very often used as an effective and simple method of mixing). Care is required when drilling holes and tapping threads in the carburetor.

    Gas hoses from a reducer with an adjusting screw go to the mixer inlet if the mixer supplies both chambers simultaneously. Or the hoses come from a splitter (tee), at the ends of which there are “greed” screws.

    “Greed” screws are screws that regulate the amount of propane-butane mixture when supplied to the car engine.

    A large diameter gas hose goes from the reducer to the tee, and thin ones from the tee to the mixer. During installation, you need to ensure the shortest distance from the mixer to the tee (small hoses) by adjusting the required installation distance with the length of the large gas hose.

    We cut into the gasoline solenoid valve by cutting the gas line as close to the carburetor as possible.

    We connect the gas button and be sure to solder and carefully insulate all electrical connections.

    This concludes our article on installing 2nd generation LPG on a carburetor. We have tried to describe in as much detail as possible the process of selecting and installing all the necessary components so that you have a complete understanding of the installation process.

    The latest cars converted to gas

    Since 1996, we have installed gas equipment on 40,000 cars in service centers in Moscow and St. Petersburg. See photo of the service area

    I have known about gas for a long time; moreover, I actively use it. I have a fleet of 23 Gazelles (commercial transportation), and thanks to HBO, every year I save on another one of these Gazelles. Maybe even more. The cylinders are installed at 105 liters, which is quite enough. The most important thing is to go to normal installers who will install it well and give a guarantee.

    I put gas on my Ford Explorer. Briefly about the installation. The guys installed everything quickly and competently, no complaints. I took it yesterday and picked it up today with a brand new G.B.O. They installed Lovato for six cylinders, the torus cylinder and VZU were cut into the hatch. In general, we tried our best. I appreciated the benefits of gas immediately after leaving the pit. Let me start with the fact that I didn’t notice any difference at all - you switch from gasoline to gas and from gas to gasoline smoothly, there is not even a minimal transition. There is no smell in the cabin, although, having read all sorts of forums, I was most afraid of this - the smell of gas. And now about saving. I think that the fuel consumption of my car is high, and this is not always justified. If I used to drive on gasoline and spend 15 on the highway and 21.5 in the city, now it takes me 16 on the highway and 23 in the city. However, if previously it took me about 2,700 rubles per week. on fuel, now I spend a little more than one and a half thousand.

    Ways to protect and increase the life of the throttle body

    Automotive component manufacturers apply a special molybdenum coating to throttle valve wells. However, during engine operation or careless cleaning of the throttle assembly, it wears out and is destroyed.

    They are available in both liquid form and aerosol cans.

    In Russia, innovative solid lubricant coatings are produced. All of them have been tested on the relevant components and mechanisms, many are successfully used at domestic industrial enterprises, replacing expensive imported analogues and traditional, but less effective lubricants.

    On various engine parts - throttle valves, pistons, threaded and splined joints, plain bearings - MODENGY coating for internal combustion engine parts demonstrates excellent results.

    For cases of private use, a convenient aerosol packaging of this material is provided.

    From a cylinder, the composition is sprayed onto the surface of the damper (and, if necessary, the well) from a distance of 15-20 cm. As a rule, several layers are applied with intermediate drying for 10 minutes. The coating dries completely in 12 hours without the use of any heating equipment (polymerization ovens, etc.).

    High-quality treatment of the damper involves preliminary cleaning of its surface with a special MODENGY activator cleaner. It removes dirt, degreases and ensures the best adhesion of the coating.

    How to install HBO on a VAZ 2107

    Before installing LPG on a VAZ 2107 (carburetor), you should buy a set of equipment, which includes:

    • gas cylinder with fastening tapes;
    • ventilation box;
    • gas reducer;
    • solenoid valve;
    • multi-valve with filling device;
    • power register;
    • gas-gasoline switch;
    • fuel line solenoid valve;
    • copper tube with a diameter of 6 and 8 mm;
    • gas sleeve;
    • antifreeze sleeve;
    • clamp and adapter tees.

    You can begin installing the equipment by embedding the VZU (remote charger) into the rear bumper of the car. This can be done using a drill and cutter.

    Further installation of equipment and pipelines is carried out in several stages. Laying the pipeline from the VZU to the multivalve of the gas cylinder through a decorative rubber plug in the body (for high-quality performance of the operation, it is desirable to remove the decorative trim and gas tank).

    Important: Be careful when bending copper gas pipes. With a sharp bend, the tube is deformed and its capacity is reduced, which can cause problems when filling the cylinder or operating the engine at high speeds.

    HBO for VAZ: what are the advantages and where to buy?

    So is it worth installing HBO on a VAZ? Undoubtedly. After all, the advantages of gas equipment are not limited to financial savings due to the difference in the cost of two types of fuel. A gas engine will last longer, because gas reduces the load on it and leaves fewer “traces” than gasoline.

    Gas fuel is approximately seventy percent more environmentally friendly than gasoline and diesel. Its cleanliness is relevant not only globally, but also for the car owner himself, who spends a lot of time in and around the car. Installing LPG does not exclude the subsequent use of diesel or gasoline, which is especially pleasant for prudent drivers who strictly control the optimal financial costs for refueling the car. Despite the well-established opinion that gas cylinders are explosive, the advantages of gas cylinders include fire safety. Tests of gas-cylinder equipment indicate the safety of its use, while gasoline leakage is much more likely to occur.
