How much to pour?

The amount of lubricant to be filled depends on the engine size. A guideline for the volume of required fluid can be the amount of used lubricant spilled out when replacing. For VAZ 2114 cars this volume is approximately 4 liters.

When pouring fresh lubricant, you should monitor its level using a special dipstick. It has maximum and minimum marks. The lubricant level should be between them. If it is lower, then the liquid must be added, if higher it can be pumped out using a syringe.

When should you change your oil?

First of all, you need to know the reasons for replacing the lubricant, which determines the frequency of its replacement. Everything regarding replacement, as well as which lubricant is best to use, is described in the VAZ 2114 operating manual. According to the manufacturer’s recommendations, the engine oil should be changed every 10-15 thousand kilometers. This assumes normal operating conditions.

The period after which the lubricant should be changed is influenced by several factors:

  • Terms of Use. If the car is used in urban conditions with a lot of traffic jams, and also experiences constantly increased loads, for example, traveling with a trailer, then the time between replacements is halved.
  • Lubrication quality. If it is of poor quality, the oil filter quickly becomes clogged, and a large amount of residue from engine operation accumulates in the lubricant, which requires more frequent replacement of the lubricant.
  • The season in which the machine is operated affects the lubricants used in the engine. In winter and summer they differ in their characteristics.
  • Driving style. If the driver is a fan of fast, dynamic driving, then the load on the engine is higher, so the oil has to be changed more often.

When buying a car that was used by another owner, it is advisable to change the lubricant and filter, after first flushing the entire fuel system.

After all, the engine has its own brain - the controller, its own nervous system - the electrics, the heart - the cylinders, the blood - the motor oil. Only the reproductive organs are missing, which is a pity... But the engine also has its own liver, that is, an organ that serves to cleanse the body: a kind of dump, a garbage heap! This is an oil filter. And, fortunately, it can and should be changed at every oil change - the engine does not need liver cirrhosis!

The choice is huge: imported and ours, small and large, expensive and cheap... For our new examination of VAZ “eight-ten” filters, we easily bought 24 types of these products in Moscow stores - two of each type. The tests were carried out at the Department of internal combustion engines of the St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University.

We have raised the topic of “chief cleaning” more than once - we measured the area of ​​the filter surface, assessed the nominal fineness of screening... But if all previous examinations were based on the GOST testing procedure, now it’s time to compare how filters work in real conditions, that is, directly on engine as an element of the lubrication system. We've never done anything like this before!

What did we check and how?

First, let’s satisfy our curiosity: what’s inside? It was no coincidence that we took two filters each... To do this, carefully, on a lathe, we cut off the bottom, pull out the “offal” and admire them. Well, the body is one piece, the valves are two pieces (bypass and return), the filter element is also one. There is, however, “Superfilter Kolan”, where there are even two of them, but this is exotic.

There are relatively few filter element designs - usually it is a cassette filled with corrugated filter paper. The filtration area is very important because it largely determines the filter life. Interestingly, this area varies from filter to filter by more than two and a half times. For example, in “Champion” it is more than 1300 cm2, while in “Citron” it only slightly exceeds 500 cm2. The number of corrugations varies from 54 to 85 - even for filters of similar sizes. For some, the corrugation pitch is uniform, for others it is empty in some places, and so thick in others that you cannot even detect a gap between the corrugations. It would seem - well, okay, the area doesn’t change? Haha: try blowing a single sheet of paper and then a stack of it. Why would this oil take the path of greatest resistance, where the corrugations simply folded? So it turns out that the real, active filtration area depends on the quality and uniformity of corrugation. And this says a lot about production technology. It goes without saying that in the final assessment we will definitely take into account the quality of the paper structure.

From paper to valves: bypass and return. The task of the first is to track the moment of critical filter contamination and prevent the engine from dying from oil drought: dirty oil is better than no oil. It works on a simple principle: when the filter becomes dirty, the pressure in front of it increases and behind it drops. The valve opens slightly and some of the oil passes through unpurified, but the pressure behind the filter, that is, in the oil system, increases.

And here is the question: what should be the opening force of the bypass valve? There are filters - for example, Tsitron Raider, which claim increased opening force as a distinctive feature. They say that at peak pressures on a cold start, the valve does not allow dirty oil into the engine. Is this good - how can it be without oil? On the other hand, this force should not be small, otherwise dirty oil will immediately rush into the engine. So what's right? There is no official answer to this, so we took the average value for the entire sample as the norm.

With a check valve everything is simpler. Its task is to keep the oil in the filter when the engine is stopped. The less oil in the housing, the longer the oil pressure light does not go out when starting - not good! We assessed the quality of its operation by oil loss over a fixed time, starting with the same engine condition. That is, they stopped the engine, and after 30 minutes they measured it - how much oil was left in the filter?

Oil change intervals

The frequency of oil changes directly depends not only on the total mileage, but also on the condition of the car. So, if the car is completely new, then the first replacement should be done after a run of 3,000 km (at this time, units and parts are still being run-in, as a result of which a larger than usual amount of metal particles is formed).

It is recommended to perform the second oil change on a new car after another 6,000 km (that is, after 9,000 km of total mileage).

The third, and all subsequent replacements, can be performed every 15,000 km (with intense loads on the engine, for example, with a sporty driving style, or oil of not the best quality - every 10,000 km).


Oil filler neck

If the car was purchased secondhand, then it is recommended to change the oil immediately, regardless of the assurances of the previous owner. This is due to the fact that it is impossible to determine “by eye” how long ago it was replaced with great accuracy, and operating a car with old oil is highly not recommended due to the possible consequences for the engine.

It should also be noted that the oil should be changed depending on the season.

So, they distinguish:

  • summer;
  • all-season;
  • winter.

Moreover, each of them is divided according to the extreme permissible temperature indicators (all of them are indicated directly on the canister, and it is they who are recommended to be guided by when buying oil for use in a particular region).

All-season oil can be used only in southern and middle latitudes, and in the latter only in the absence of severe frosts (for most such oils - not lower than -20 C). The use of this (and, especially, summer) oil at extremely low temperatures can cause its excessive thickening and, as a result, damage to moving units.
