Former Leningrad carburetor, since 1993. began production of a new generation of motorcycle carburetors K-68. They were somewhat different from their predecessors in design terms, as well as in their functionality and efficiency. This model, in various modifications, began to be equipped with Ural, IZH, and Dnepr motorcycles. And today the K-68 has not lost its relevance and is rightfully considered one of the best domestic models for motorcycles.
In this article we will look at the main types of adjustment of the K-68 carburetor, with the help of which anyone can achieve good dynamics, efficiency and proper operation of the entire power unit. For those who do not know how to adjust the carburetor on a scooter, this article will also be useful.
Basic types of carburetor settings
It is no secret to any car owner that the carburetor is designed to prepare a combustible mixture for the engine, which it produces by mixing a certain portion of air with fuel. But its functions are not limited to this. It must also ensure that the motorcycle engine operates in different modes, which means preparing a fuel mixture with different proportions of its components. The implementation of this task is entrusted to various systems and components of the device. These include:
- Main dosing system;
- Idle system;
- Starting device;
- System for maintaining a given fuel level.
We will look at setting up these elements. The best place to start is by checking the fuel level in the float chamber.
. To do this you need:
- remove the carburetor;
- remove the float chamber cover;
- Having turned the carburetor over so that the floats are on top, measure the distance from the edge of the body to the top edge of the floats. It should be 26 mm ± 0.5 mm; in case of deviation, it is eliminated by bending the tongue;
- check the parallelism of the floats; adjust by bending the brackets.
Now let's move on to the main dosing system.
. First, check the gap between the throttle valve and the bottom of the air duct. It should be 2 mm. If the gap does not match, then adjust it using the throttle valve cable adjusting bolt, which is located on the throttle well cover tube.
What kind of carburetor is used on the Izh Planet-5 motorcycle
The latest Planet model was produced in several variations. Early transitional models were equipped with K-62I carburetors. Then they began to install the K-65I and the more progressive K-68I with a cylindrical throttle valve.
All three carburetors: top left - K62I, top right - K68I, bottom - K65I
All three carburetors have a similar operating principle. From the tank, through the fuel valve, fuel enters the float chamber. The floats are made of petrol-resistant lightweight material. As soon as gasoline fills the chamber, the floats will float up and the shut-off needle will block the fuel supply channel.
From the chamber, fuel enters the atomizer through the main fuel jet. In it, the fuel is mixed with air entering through a special hole in the atomizer body. The finished mixture enters the mixing chamber (diffuser) and then into the engine cylinder. This dosing system is called the main one. And it only works at medium and high engine speeds, when the throttle is raised more than 2/3 of its stroke.
To operate the engine at low speeds, the carburetor is equipped with an idle system. It consists of a fuel tube, mixture quantity and quality screws, a special air channel, transition and idle holes in the diffuser.
The fuel rises through the tube due to the vacuum in the mixing chamber and is mixed with air entering through the air channel. As a result, the resulting mixture, when the throttle is opened slightly, exits through the idle hole (it is specially located behind the throttle valve, at the end of the diffuser).
If you continue to raise the throttle, the vacuum will increase in the area of the transition hole and the mixture will also begin to flow through it. In general, when you lift the throttle (turn the throttle lever), the mixture becomes leaner and the engine speed increases. The air flow speed increases and, by lowering the pressure in the mixing chamber, the fuel supply increases.
The carburetor of the Izh Planeta-5 motorcycle also contains an engine starting and warming up system (to facilitate engine starting in the cold season). The enrichment corrector is installed on the carburetor body or brought to the motorcycle handlebar using a cable. When it is lifted, 3 channels will open in the carburetor body. Through the fuel channel from the float chamber, the fuel will enter a special cavity, where it will mix with air coming from the air channel (this channel is usually located at the end of the diffuser on the air filter side).
As a result, the finished mixture will flow through a special channel to the outlet of the mixing chamber (behind the throttle valve). The channels are designed in such a way that the finished quality of the mixture is sufficient to warm up the engine.
Float stopper or additional starting device. When you press it, the floats lower and additional fuel enters the chamber. When starting, the mixture is richer and the engine starts easier. It is recommended to use the drowner only at temperatures of +5 C and below.
How to install a carburetor
Before installing the carburetor
on IZ Jupiter 5, make sure it is completely clean and all parts are present.
First, remove the carburetor cover with the three-hole throttle body. The round hole located in the center is intended for placing and fixing the needle, the shaped one, located on the side of the cutout, is for attaching the cable coming from the throttle handle, the T-shaped one is for installing the screw rod. The new carburetor on the IZH Jupiter 5 has a limiter located in the cover, which is removed after the break-in period.
After fixing the carburetor to the engine, a cable is attached to the shaped hole of the throttle and the cover is tightened. The throttle is checked for the ability to fully open the diffuser and not jam in all positions of the throttle stick.
Carburetor to the Planet, or how to distinguish a fake.
Hi all! After a long time, a good opportunity arose to talk about the K68 carburetor, and today I want to touch on the K68I carburetor, installed on the Planet 5 and Jupiter 5 motorcycles. There are, again, many myths and rumors about what the diffuser should be like, what the original K68 should look like , how to distinguish it from a fake of narrow-eyed friends from overseas, etc. The first thing I would like to note is that when compared with any Japanese analogue, and as it turns out they exist, it is quite primitive and terrible to set up. How many headaches and nightly thoughts before bed he brought me about how to set it up, and why it doesn’t work... Closer to the topic... The other day, after reading smart articles on the forums, I found a good article on how to distinguish a carburetor K68I from a Chinese fake. For general development, carburetors (Russia) are considered today one of the best offers on the market for motorcycles IZH Planet 5, as well as IZH Jupiter 5. So, the carburetor was ordered by me and delivered to me by the valiant Russian Post in 5 days, where I ordered I can give you a PM. The carburetor came in this form
On the box of the product itself, as well as on the product itself, there is the inscription “Made in Russia”; it’s up to you to decide whether this is a plus or a minus, but compared to my Chinese K68I, it’s still a plus. Also on the box there are instructions on how to check the product for authenticity, I checked, the carburetor is original. Also in the box, in addition to the carburetor, was a gasket and instructions with very useful information about everything related to the product itself. Setting, characteristics, etc.
But most importantly, my cat Kuzma approved the purchase, this, I think, is the main thing =)
Why so many photos? You will understand later. And so, let’s get started with the replacement, I didn’t bother removing and installing, it’s not difficult, and there’s information on the Internet on almost all forums, and that’s not what the article is about, but let’s continue. And so here are the photos of my Chinese “Kashka” and the original one. (In the first photo the original is below)
And so the differences:
1. Inscription. On the original it is clear, not blurry like on a fake, as well as the font size, on the original it is larger, the inscription language is ENGLISH.
2. Casting quality. It is also different, made with great passion for counterfeiting.
3. The color of the float chamber gasket should be BLACK.
4. The new “Pekarovsky” carburetor has transport cables, which are removed after installation; the Chinese fake does not have them.
5. Diffuser. In the original it is 32 mm, in my Chinese it is 30.5 mm, and this, for a minute, is a big difference, affecting primarily the power.
6. The diameter of the mixing chamber, in the original it is exactly 31.5 mm.
It seems that I have indicated everything, if I forgot something, I will definitely add it. I would also like to mention that even this original carburetor forced me to modify it a little, because there was a “bump” at the place where it adhered to the intake manifold, which is clearly visible in the photo above; I removed it with sandpaper. These problems are not very common, but they do occur. + Finally, I would like to wish everyone to be more vigilant when purchasing these products; there are a lot of, I repeat, a lot of Chinese feces on the market that do not allow your steel friends to work normally, not to mention the good ones characteristics, at least normal. Good luck to everyone, full tanks and smooth roads, take care of yourself!

Carburetor adjustment Izh Jupiter 5
Adjusting the IZ Jupiter 5 carburetor is the simplest, but at the same time the most important process. Whether it is K-62, K-65 or K-68, you must first warm up the engine to operating temperature, and then perform a sequential series of actions :
- Set low but fairly stable engine speeds by rotating the screw that adjusts the throttle position.
- By changing the position of the idle screw, set the engine to maximum speed.
- Repeat these steps 4-5 times, gradually reducing engine speed.
- Check with sharp jerks that the adjustment is correct.
Adjust the carburetor
on IZH Jupiter 5 it should be done so that there are no jerks and the engine does not stall in the event of sudden opening and closing of the throttle.
In the first case, you should enrich the fuel mixture by turning the idle speed ¼-½ turn clockwise.
In the second, turn the screw in the opposite direction. You can also adjust the carburetor Depending on weather conditions and the technical condition of the engine, the metering needle can be moved up to enrich the mixture and down to obtain the opposite effect.

Carburetors of early “Jupiters”, their features and adjustment nuances
IZH Jupiter 2.3 motorcycles were equipped with K-36Zh carburetors with a diffuser diameter of 24 mm. At that time, the carburetor design was the most progressive.
IZ Jupiter 2.3 carburetor diagram
The following are responsible for setting the carburetor: the mixture quantity screw (16), the mixture quality screw (24) regulates not the amount of air, but the fuel emulsion that flows behind the throttle valve (by analogy with a car carburetor), the throttle needle (12) and the main fuel jet (18). The latter can be easily unscrewed from the side of the carburetor for cleaning or replacement, which is undoubtedly very convenient.
The throttle valve is made flat, rectangular in shape with a characteristic cutout on the intake side to lean the mixture at idle. At the top of the throttle, the needle is attached to the hole without the help of a lock. And the mixing chamber cover (1) is secured using two leaf springs (10). This design is made for quickly removing the needle and adjusting the carburetor at medium engine speeds (by moving the position of the metering needle).
The fuel corrector consists of a needle, which, under the action of a spring (2), closes the corrector jet (17). The corrector cable comes out of the guide (9) and connects to the coin on the steering wheel. When it is turned, the needle rises, and additional fuel enters the opening of the mixing chamber through the corrector jet, enriching the mixture.
As can be seen from the diagram, the idle jet (25) is located behind the gas turbine engine, due to which the idle system partially affects the operation of the engine when the throttle is fully open. For the same reason, the diameter of this diffuser was increased to 70 ml/min.
The idle speed setting on the K-36Zh carburetor is carried out as follows. By tightening the quantity screw 3-4 turns, raise the throttle valve. This is necessary to start and warm up the engine. The corrector must be closed. After warming up, use the screw to set the minimum stable engine speed.
Next, tighten the quality screw until the stability of the engine is disrupted. When this happens, unscrew the same screw back so that the motor starts working stably again. At the end of the quantity screw we again try to reduce the speed to a minimum. To check the correctness of the adjustment, sharply unscrew the throttle cable to the middle, and then drop it.
