In 1985, the first models of motorcycles Izh Jupiter 5 and Izh Jupiter - 5K were produced at the Izhmash plant. Tuning the IZH Jupiter engine
Before you start, you need to decide how much power you would like to give to your engine. If you are quite satisfied with the average power, then you will need a ZiD-200 resonator. But if you want to make the IZH Jupiter 5 motorcycle fast and powerful, start tuning the engine by installing a resistor from the SMB-5 “motoblock”.
Replacing the air filter plays a big role in engine modification. The better the air is cleaned, the more horses the engine will be able to produce. After all, the degree of engine overheating depends on the amount of incoming air. It is best to use imported air filters. They provide improved cleaning and longer service life.
Next you should work hard on the injection system. An excellent option is to install a “Planet” carburetor with a diffuser diameter of 0.32 cm. Two carburetors will provide much greater acceleration and good dynamics. We take the flanges securing the cylinder from the standard tube, grind out the aluminum studs, and cut off the flange from the carburetor from the inlet tube from the Planet.
We grind the ends of the cylinder heads on a machine, and press the cylinders themselves. The maximum permissible volume of PIC is 18 cubic meters. see Install factory copper layers under the cylinder heads. And we adjust the ignition advance angle to increase compression.
We use the second flange from the old carburetor. Then we weld the parts using “cold” welding. The main feature of the motorcycle is that it can be used with or without a side trailer. If we look at the design, it resembles the IZH Planet 5. A distinctive feature is the simplicity and beauty of the style, unique cylinder fins and completely new flange mounts on the exhaust pipes have appeared. The shape of the dashboard has become square, there is also a turn signal, low/high beam, ignition switch and speedometer. Due to the increase in seating, the shape of the tank has also changed.
The peculiarity of the model lies in the parameters related to weight and dimensions:
- The ground clearance in different versions is 13.5 cm.
- Wheelbase – 145 cm.
- The length of the motorcycle is 217 cm.
- Full width 81.5 cm.
- Height 117 cm.
Among residents of rural areas, the motorcycle has gained the greatest popularity.
The weight of the Izh Jupiter 5 motorcycle reaches 160 kg, this helps the vehicle to be stable and maneuverable. If a side trailer is attached to the model, then the weight becomes 255 kg. The motorcycle can easily withstand a load of not only 170 kg, it can easily transport heavy loads, and there is no risk of wear and tear.
On the market Izh Jupiter 5 can be found in three modifications:
- The standard model is a motorcycle without a side trailer, but with mounts for a sidecar if necessary.
- The tourist model is equipped with a stroller and has an additional spare wheel with special lugs.
- Izh Jupiter 5 luxury class comes without a side trailer and has no fastenings. But there is a compact fairing and several knee roll bars. Additionally, this model has a trailer rack.

The model also demonstrates good performance in terms of technical characteristics. The Izh Jupiter 5 engine is a two-cylinder, two-stroke unit, which has additional built-in air-water cooling. The power of the technical device reaches 25 horsepower with an engine volume of 347.6 cm3. The motorcycle can freely reach a maximum speed of up to 125 km/h; with a sidecar, of course, the speed decreases slightly, but is at least 95 km/h.

A distinctive feature is that the lubrication system works in concert with the fuel system. The oil is automatically diluted with gasoline. The gearbox is four-speed, the drive is on the rear wheel, that is, a chain. The clutch is multi-plate, closed, and is in oil. The brakes on a motorcycle are drum type. Fuel consumption is 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers. The Izh Jupiter 5 carburetor can be represented by the Czechoslovakian model Jikov-2928SE, but carburetors K-62D, K-65D, K-68D are more often installed.
The IZ Jupiter 5 wiring was created for battery use, so sometimes owners have difficulty starting the engine, there is an interruption in the operation of the motor, in this case it is recommended to install a contactless electronic system.
How to disassemble the IZ Jupiter 5 engine
So, disassembling the IZ Jupiter 5 engine includes the following steps:
- First you need to wash the hard-working heart of the motorcycle. You need to rinse it as thoroughly as possible, since dirt should not end up inside the engine, otherwise most of the work will most likely go down the drain.
- Take a piece of paper with a pen to write down the location of the parts and the order in which they are installed as you work. All bolts, studs and dowels have their place and order of tightening. Therefore, there is no need to scatter them in different directions, but it is better to fold them as they are disassembled.
- It is necessary to tighten the exhaust tube. Don't throw it away, tie it to something strong.
- After unscrewing the 4 nuts, remove the cylinder covers and the cylinders themselves, being careful not to damage the gaskets. If the gaskets are damaged, then the pressure inside the engine will be compromised.
- Now you need to tighten the tube on the chain cover. We knock out the stud on the front of the engine halfway. It is important not to bend it, otherwise you will have to look for a new one.
- Unscrew the nuts and remove the bolt securing the engine at the rear. It is better to lay out the parts in groups so as not to lose or mix them up.
- We unscrew the seven bolts securing the pan, remove the flywheel plate and gasket, and fix the engine. It is better to fix the engine on a workbench; if you don’t have one, then a massive table will do.
- Using a socket wrench and a long, strong pry bar, loosen the bolt holding the take-out flywheel together. Be careful not to break the thread on the cap - this will make the task much more difficult.
- Disconnect the crankcase halves. We don’t put them away, they will come in handy soon.
- Remove the take-out flywheel and veneer.
- We take out the middle and front shafts, the follower shaft, and remember the installation location of the adjusting washers. It is important to remember their exact location, otherwise parts will not fit together later.
- We unscrew the pins securing the crank chamber covers and remove the covers with rings. The pins are quite fragile, if you break them while unscrewing them, it will be difficult to get them out.
- We remove the crankshafts from the halves of the pallet.
- Pull out the bearings of the crankcase half. Don't bend the crankcase or your oil will be used up very quickly.
- Unscrew the screws and the race with the crankshaft oil seal.
- We take out the installation rings and knock out the seals.
- We knock out the bearing of the right half of the pan.
- Disassembly of the IZH Jupiter engine is completed.
Now that you have looked at all the parts from the inside and found the problem, we replace the broken part. The easiest way is to look on the Internet at a spare parts sales site. You can also find it at a regular city market (flea market). Before assembling the IZH Jupiter 5 engine, carefully inspect its surface for chips, cracks, and wear again.
After you have thrown out the broken part and stuck a new, shiny one in its place, you need to return everything to the way it was. Assembling the IZ Jupiter 5 engine is a little more difficult than disassembling it. Everything is put together in reverse order.

Maintenance and repair work
Considering the fact that the equipment has long been discontinued, parts on the market are not difficult to find, since the motorcycle remains in use. Fortunately for many owners, the design of the Izh Jupiter 5 motorcycle is simple, so repairs will not be difficult.
- To determine the degree of clutch malfunction, you must first check to what extent the crankshaft sprockets coincide with the plane of the clutch drum. If there are discrepancies, the Izh Jupiter 5 clutch is easily adjusted. It is necessary to bring it to 0.4 mm using washers installed on the input shaft between the spacer sleeve and the ring inside with bearings. The motor chain should not sag by more than 2 mm; if this happens, it means that the sprockets need to be replaced with others whose diameter will be greater than the circumference of the cavities in the gear.
In terms of technical characteristics, the model demonstrates good performance - When adjusting the clutch, you must carefully ensure that the spring nuts extend slightly beyond the edges of the caps by 4 mm, while the pressure plate must move without distortion. Adjustment of the clutch mechanism occurs after installing the right cover and the automatic clutch, after which the adjustment screw on the pressure plate is tightened, unscrewed by ¼-½ turn and the screw is fixed. The clutch lever is adjustable to a free play of 5-10 mm.
- It is important to be able to adjust the idle speed of the crankshaft. You should act in stages. First, it is checked whether the throttle has free play and the engine is warmed up. The check can be done by setting low, stable speeds, rotating the throttle screw until the speed increases and then decreases. If the engine stalls when you open the throttle, you should enrich the fuel mixture and tighten the screw, and if it stalls when you close it, you need to unscrew the screw slightly. This procedure is considered the best for checking the carburetor, especially if you have to travel on a poor-quality road or the temperature conditions change. Preventative maintenance of the carburetor involves cleaning and flushing parts after 5,000 km.
- Sooner or later the kickstarter wears out and engagement fails. To restore it, you need to weld the leading edge, this can be done at home if you have an electric sharpener. For convenient work, you should remove the ratchet from the clutch drum. There is no need to try to ensure the original shape of the teeth; it will be enough to achieve good engagement with an angle of 20-30°.
It is not difficult to find motorcycle parts on the market - When checking the clutch of the Izh Jupiter 5 motorcycle, you should pay attention to the wear of the discs; they may burst or become deformed. If the owner notices that the disc is swaying from side to side, then most likely it is bent. Sometimes there may be no obvious deformation, then you need to pay attention to the protrusions of the working surface. The repair consists of replacing the clutch discs.
- Motorcycle repair includes ignition installation. You can install the ignition of Izh Jupiter 5 as follows: turn the crankshaft clockwise using the generator armature bolt, do this until the contacts open. Afterwards the screw is loosened and a small gap between the contacts is fixed. An ignition bushing is installed in place of the spark plug. It is important to align the extreme notch on the collar with the sleeve and end. Three screws are unscrewed until the contacts open, then two screws are fastened. The same must be done with the second cylinder.
