Nowadays it’s rare to find a “Planet” anywhere, especially in stock form. Grandfather's sheds where they once stood in abundance have long been cleaned out by the suffering, and the garbage dumps where they once lay are overgrown with grass...

The only place where you can still find something more or less decent is local newspaper advertisements. You can also search on Avito, but before you buy it there, see the product in person, otherwise they will send you a bag of bricks instead of an engine...

I was lucky: I found an advertisement in a local newspaper for the sale of an engine from a sidecar, went to the place, inspected it, made an agreement, bought it and brought it home. Don’t let the fact that the engine is from a motorized stroller scare you - the engine is completely identical to the original Planetovsky one.

In general, when I tossed the engine around, I was happy and immediately upset... I was happy because the engine was stock and had no signs of interference. There was also original oil and a USSR spark plug. I was upset because the piston and lower connecting rod bearing were killed.

I had a good factory cylinder in stock: bored to repair size + a factory piston, chrome rings and pin were purchased for it a long time ago.

I bought the connecting rod from an online store. We managed to find a factory one - not plasticine. I modified it a little: I made a small cut in the lower head to improve bearing lubrication, decompressed the crankshaft, threw out the old connecting rod, installed a new one and then centered the crankshaft using an indicator.

The road motorcycle “Izh Jupiter 5-020-03” (Izh 6.113-020-03) belongs to the middle class motorcycles and is intended for use on roads with various surfaces.     There are enough people who like to criticize the IZH-Yu-5 and IZH-P-5 motorcycles, but nevertheless we can say that these motorcycles can no longer be called toys, these are real motorcycles with their own advantages and, of course, disadvantages. These motorcycles are either for people with low incomes who cannot or do not want to buy expensive Japanese or European motorcycle toys, or for people who are in love with motorcycles. Buyers of such motorcycles do not need to show off their bike at the pub.

    Nevertheless, these models of the domestic motorcycle industry are capable of delivering enough pleasure and thrill to the owner. And if the owner is not offended by skillful hands, then these motorcycles turn into quite attractive material for the birth of motorcycle creations.

    A strong frame, especially for those models that from the factory were supposed to carry a heavy-duty side trailer - a stroller.

    The factory design is completely free of plastic and in our road conditions this can be considered a plus. Comfortable, road fit, no need to lie on the tank. According to those characteristics, the stated speeds are: with a maximum load on the highway 90 km/h Of course, nothing is impossible and a single motorcycle can be accelerated even more, but will the driver enjoy such speed? Still, the suspension, brakes and engine were developed quite a long time ago, and in this case the possibility of competing with modern motorcycles is doubtful.

    When buying an IZH-Yu-5 motorcycle or an IZH-P-5 motorcycle, you know for sure that you can find almost any spare part anywhere. There are no problems with spare parts. Don’t forget about the possibility of repairs in the field - almost any breakdown can be fixed on the road if you have a little experience. These motorcycles are not too demanding on the quality of gasoline, although naturally the motorcycle runs a little faster at 92.

    Motorcycles IZH-Yu-5 and IZH-P-5, despite their weight, can still be classified as heavy motorcycles, because the curb weight with driver and passenger is more than three hundred kg. Of course, you can’t count on dynamics with such a load, nor can you count on a quick ability to stop; the braking torque will clearly not be enough for such a mass.

    Let’s not try to separate IZH-Yu-5 or IZH-P-5; this is a matter of taste and every Izh owner will find a lot of positive aspects when choosing the number of cylinders for the engine.

    Here it is worth noting only the average statistical data, which turns out that the owner of an IZH-Yu-5 spends an order of magnitude more money and time on repairs and maintenance than the owner of an IZH-P-5 motorcycle. Naturally, the reason for this lies in the engine.

    Let's try to confirm or deny this:

    In theory, everything is fine - two cylinders are considered somewhat better than one, here the vibration is an order of magnitude less, and the dynamics along with the power are better. But the majority is of the opinion that the better the easier, this applies not only to motorcycles. It is believed that simplicity is the key to reliability, because a two-cylinder engine has twice as many parts. Oddly enough, it turns out that the Planets last twice as long, they are not so sensitive to various gaps, and to wear of the cylinder-piston group.

    Almost all repair work is carried out on the Planet faster and easier. Here it is worth recalling at least the gearbox, which can be reached without completely disassembling the engine. The engines are almost identical in power. One way or another, each driver decides for himself whether to choose IZH-Yu-5 or IZH-P-5. Both motorcycles are worthy, as at the time of their appearance and even now, there are still a lot of fans of these motorcycles.

Preparation

To perform a high-quality repair, the engine parts must be clean, the threads in the crankcase must be threaded, the seals and gaskets must be new.

First, we clean the oil channels in the crank chambers. There are two channels in the Izh-Planet engine: one in the left half of the crankcase, the other in the right. We find the channels and if they are very clogged, we clean them with wire, rinse them with clean gasoline and blow them with compressed air.

Characteristic

At that time, the Izh Planeta-2 motorcycle had modern parameters. The technical characteristics are as follows: two-stroke engine with a capacity of 346 cc. cm drives a 155-kilogram motorcycle. Engine power is 15 horsepower at crankshaft speeds of 4,200–4,600 per minute. The fuel mixture enters the cylinder along with lubricating oil. After ignition, a compression of about 7 is created in a normal cylinder. Fuel enters the K-36I carburetor by gravity from a tank with a capacity of 18 liters, after which it is sucked by the reverse stroke of the piston into the cylinder.

The maximum speed is 105 kilometers per hour, while fuel consumption increases and engine life is significantly reduced. The rotation of the crankshaft is transmitted by a double-row chain to the clutch, and to the wheels by a two-way, four-speed gearbox through a multi-plate clutch system. From the box to the rear wheel, rotation is transmitted by a chain, the gear ratio of which is 2.33.

The softness of movement is ensured by the shock absorption system. The front telescopic fork is equipped with a spring mechanism with a hydraulic shock absorber. The rear fork is pendulum, with the same shock absorber as the front. The motorcycle frame is non-separable, all-metal, tubular.

Installation of bearings and seals

We install a retaining ring in the left half of the crankcase.

Depending on the model of the main oil seal, we install a spacer sleeve in the mounting hole of the main bearing, or, if the oil seal was initially wide (there are some), we heat the crankcase and, on the inside of the crankcase, place the oil seal until it stops against the retaining ring.

My engine had a regular narrow oil seal, so I put in a bushing.

Using a mandrel, install the main oil seal into the preheated crankcase.

Quickly, before the crankcase cools down, place the oil guide washer on the oil seal. The oil guide washer has a saucer-shaped profile. We place it on the oil seal so that the concave side faces us, and the curved side faces the clutch basket.

While the crankcase has not cooled down, we press the outer race of the main bearing into it using a mandrel.

If you are going to replace the main bearings with new ones, don’t be lazy: find a sheet of iron 7-8 mm thick, cut a wedge in it for the connecting rod, pass the sheet of iron between the cheeks of the crankshaft and use a mandrel to drive the main bearing onto the axle.

This way you will protect yourself from damage to the crankshaft. The main bearing has a very high interference and fits into the axle with a very large force. It is not uncommon for people to simply knock out the axle (the axle on the planetary crankshaft is pressed into the cheek) inside the crankshaft, but they were never able to put the bearing on.

Planet 2 and Jupiter 2

The appearance of the representatives of the second generation of the Jupiter and Planet families, produced by the Izhevsk Machine-Building Enterprise, is almost identical .
The main difference between these motorcycles is the design of the power units.

So, the Planet 2 engine has one cylinder, while the Jupiter 2 engine is equipped with two.

The crew parts of both vehicles are unified. One-piece (welded) tubular frames are similar, but the motor mounting points are different, so the motors of the models cannot be swapped.

The Jupiter frame in the front part is equipped with a bracket for a stroller, which the Planet does not have.

Both motorcycles marked “2” are equipped with new designs of bearings and protective seals , as well as economical “K-36Zh” carburetors.

For each model, the manufacturer included additional spare parts in the form of a tire pressure gauge and a spare clutch cable.

The average person could distinguish Jupiter 2 from Planet 2 by the emblem on the gas tank of each model.

Assembling the crankcase halves

We degrease the connector of the halves, knock out the guide bushings a little so that they extend 5-6 mm above the plane. Depending on your desire, we assemble the checkpoint. Personally, I assemble the gearbox only after assembling the engine, it’s more convenient for me.

We apply any automotive sealant to the connector, install the second half of the crankcase, tap it with a mallet, install the gearbox cover and tighten the crankcase with bolts.

We do not pull the bolts anyhow, but strictly according to Feng Shui: we pull about a third of the force, first the middle crosswise, then the periphery, and gradually increasing the force over several circles, we tighten the bolts as much as is sufficient.
