Replacing the rear bearing

  1. Place the car on the pit.
  2. Loosen the wheel bolts, jack it up and remove it. Don't forget about safety and install a stand under the threshold.

Replacement of the VAZ-2108 rear wheel bearing is carried out in the following order:

  1. We install the car on a flat surface, fix the front wheels by placing wheel chocks under them.
  2. Remove the cap covering the hub nut.

  3. Using a chisel (core), we bend the bent edge of the hub nut so that it does not interfere with its unscrewing.
  4. Using a 30mm socket with an extended handle, unscrew the nut. If it does not give in, treat the threaded connection with anti-rust liquid.
  5. After unscrewing the nuts, unscrew (not completely) the wheel mounting bolts.
  6. We lift the body with a jack, fix its position with stumps (bricks), and unscrew the wheel bolts. We dismantle the wheel.
  7. Using a key set to “7”, unscrew the guide bolts on the drum (2 pcs.).
  8. We remove the drum. If it is not removable, we treat the place where it fits onto the hub protrusion with a rust-fighting liquid, and then knock it down using a hammer and a wooden spacer.
  9. Now completely unscrew the hub nut.
  10. Using a special puller, we dismantle the hub, grasping it with “paws” and rotating the nut. If you do not have such a device, take the removed wheel and screw it to the hub with the back side. Use the wheel as a lever.
  11. Remove the hub from the axle.
  12. Using long-nose pliers or special pliers, remove the bearing retaining ring.
  13. We place the hub in a vice and, using a hammer and a piece of pipe, carefully knock out the bearing.
  14. When the bearing is knocked out, lubricate the inner surface of the hub with grease.
  15. We install the new bearing without removing the hub from the vice.
  16. We place a wooden spacer on top of the bearing and, hitting it with a hammer, hammer the part into the hub until it stops.
  17. We put the locking ring in place.
  18. We put the hub with the new bearing on the axle. If she sits down tightly, we help her sit down using a hammer and a spacer.
  19. Screw on the new hub nut. We tighten it until it stops. The hub should still move inward.
  20. Install the brake drum and secure it with guide bolts.
  21. We mount the wheel.
  22. Remove the jack and tighten the hub nut completely. If you have a torque wrench, observe the tightening torque (186.3-225.6 Nm).
  23. We bend the edge of the nut, fixing its position.
  24. We put a cap on the nut.
  25. We jack up the body, check how the wheel rotates and whether there is any play. It is also recommended to check the operation of the parking brake.

Phillips and flathead screwdrivers of various sizes will come in handy.   • New wheel bearings almost never fit into place the first time, even with the use of a puller and a vice, so they will have to be “re-fitted” by hand, that is, driven into the fist. To do this, you will need to cut a steel pipe (and the diameter of the pipe must exactly match the diameter of the outer ring of the bearing). The attachment is installed on the ring, after which it should be carefully struck with a hammer. In this case, the fist must lie on a flat, hard surface, and the adapter on the bearing must be positioned accurately, without distortions.
  • It can be difficult to unscrew the 30mm nut that holds the wheel bearing. That is why it is best to put a long metal tube on the socket wrench and use it as an additional lever.
  • It is best to clean the wheel bearing housing from rust using a wire brush. If you don't have a brush, you can use a regular kitchen knife. It is better to lubricate the seat before pressing in a new bearing not with oil, but with grease.
  • After installing the bearing, you should check whether it is seated correctly. The easiest way to check: after the wheel is installed, you should jack up the car a little higher and lightly rock the wheel with the new bearing (away and towards you). The wheel should not wobble. If play is felt, it means the bearing is installed poorly. Be sure to spin the wheel as hard as possible and listen to the sound it makes as it rotates. It should be a very quiet, monotonous hum. If you hear some kind of creaking, or worse, clicking, it means the bearing is installed incorrectly.
  • As can be seen from the article, replacing wheel bearings is a rather labor-intensive task, even taking into account the fact that the article provides the simplest method (an alternative replacement method allows you to do without removing the steering knuckles, but in this case the car owner will definitely need an inspection hole, which is far from available everyone has).
