It’s not even worth talking about any external similarity between the cars. Not only do the Duster and X-Ray designs use different modular platforms, the exterior is also made in completely different stylistic concepts. Although this is very strange, since the design was developed by the same group of specialists.

Externally, the Duster looks like a completely ordinary crossover, planning to become an SUV in the future - a joke. The exterior of the car displays rigor and dynamism, perfectly combined with progressiveness.

But the appearance of X-Ray is a completely different story. The designers have outdone themselves and designed the exterior of the model in a very innovative and vibrant style, which makes it a strong competitor to the Duster.

At the front, the Duster is equipped with a sloping wind window with a long, flowing hood. X-Ray can counter this with a wide “frontal” and a relief hood, which makes the front of the Russian model more streamlined than that of its opponent. The nose of the “Frenchman” boasts a rectangular radiator grille that merges with three-zone LED headlights, which looks very stylish and progressive. In X-Ray you can see a false radiator grille and wide conceptual lights. The bottom of the bumper, of course, is more powerful on the French crossover - the aggressive air intake and compact fog lights look very solid. The Russian model can be contrasted with a narrow air intake and wide compartments for fog lights.

From the side, some parallels can already be drawn between the appearance of the cars. For example, this is a sloping roof and wide side doors. In everything else, the distance in terms of design is also visible. The Duster has more voluminous wheel arches. But X-Ray boasts stylish stampings that look really chic. In turn, the profile surface of the French crossover is absolutely flat and smooth.

The only part of the X-Ray that remotely resembles a crossover is, of course, the stern. Here you can see a powerful bumper, a raised rear cover, and a generally well-designed rear part. We won’t talk about Duster again - and so everything is clear: a crossover from brain to bone, regardless of the angle.

Those wishing to purchase a crossover are better off opting for the Duster. At least this is so, judging only by the exterior of the cars.

Considering the overall appearance of the car, we can say that the models have a large number of common features. They were developed in the new style of the AvtoVAZ plant. The front of the cars is almost identical and has the following features:

When looking at the cars, the signature lines in the shape of the letter X immediately catch your eye. They produce a stunning effect, but visually they make the model shorter. This is especially noticeable on the Lada X-Ray.

It is worth noting that X-Ray has a negative quality - small wheels. Too large arches for basic 15-inch wheels do not suit buyers. And therefore, after purchasing, many immediately change the wheels to 17-inch ones. Lada Vesta looks much better in this regard.

Exterior

This, of course, is a matter of taste, so it cannot be said that the Renault Kaptur is better than the LADA XRAY or vice versa.

The Russian hatchback is made in a new style for AvtoVAZ, designed by Steve Mattin. And one cannot help but admit that the foreign designer hit the nail on the head! The image of the new X-Ray, with its X-shaped stampings on the doors and fenders, as well as chrome moldings in the front end, made in the shape of the same letter “X,” looks fresh and elegant.

In profile, some are confused only by the 15-inch wheels in large wheel arches that come in the initial trim levels. Therefore, most buyers either choose a car at the top, with 17-inch alloy, or order wheels separately. The rear of the hatchback also turned out to be quite nice. Not as charismatic as the concept, but, nevertheless, the feet, wing and reflectors look very advantageous.

Renault Captur looks like a real dude! Yes, in comparison with the European version it was changed a little, but this is even a plus, because the Russian model looks more solid and expressive.

The front sparkles with an ornate radiator grille, C-shaped foglights, an air intake and a light-colored trim. From the side, the eye is drawn to the magnificent wheels, plastic lining on the arches and chrome on the bottom of the doors. At the back, everything is in the same vein - chrome, rounded feet, adjustments on the bumper and wing.

But what really captivates the Frenchman is the ability to order a 2-color body, in various variations, as well as all kinds of decorative elements!

Controllability and safety

The domestic manufacturer has provided the XRAY model with an excellent balance of qualities, combining controlled behavior on the road with good cross-country ability. Refined handling, confident cornering with minimal roll, suspension tuned for active maneuvering, tight steering and clear reactions - all this ensures stable control over the road.

As for the issue of safety, the Lada XRAY is responsible for the exchange rate stability function and other modern options connected by an intelligent system, such as anti-lock brakes, emergency brake booster, traction control and electronic brake force distribution, as well as passive safety equipment. The ISOFIX child seat fastening system and locking the rear doors of the car can protect the youngest passengers.

Renault Duster owners do not complain about handling either. A crossover with off-road capabilities has a comfortable suspension and behaves confidently on any type of surface, including off-road, gently overcoming obstacles encountered along the way. Driving comfort and safety are determined by the design of the car, as well as numerous modern options and driver assistants. The functionality of the Duster includes a stability control system, an emergency brake booster, a brake force distribution system, an anti-lock braking system and other auxiliary options that make life easier for the motorist. When choosing whether it is better to purchase a Duster or XRAY, you should take into account the operating conditions of the car, since the crossover has all-wheel drive and a ground clearance of 210 mm. It is intended not only for the city, but also forays beyond its borders. The tall LADA XRAY hatchback, frankly speaking, does not reach the level of a full-fledged crossover, although it is capable of overcoming moderate obstacles. It will cope well with broken roads and unpaved roads, but the car is not up to serious off-road conditions. The ground clearance of the LADA XRAY is 195 mm, which is quite good for a small class car (for comparison, the Hyundai Creta crossover has a ground clearance of 190 mm, and the Toyota RAV4 has a ground clearance of 165 to 205 mm, depending on the modification). Lada XRAY is capable of crossing large puddles of moderate depth, but, not knowing the ford, it is better not to bathe the horse. Although, the same rule applies to Renault Duster. The depth of possible immersion is limited by the height and placement of the engine air intake, and in the Duster the air intake is not too high, while the car can still easily overcome a small ford of 45-50 cm.

Which car should you prefer?

When deciding which to choose from two models, LADA XRAY or Renault Duster, you should focus, first of all, on your own needs. The front-wheel drive Duster is in the same price range as the Lada XRAY, while the all-wheel drive variants will be more expensive. It is important to take into account the operating conditions of the vehicle. The Renault Duster crossover has a serious off-road character, while the Lada is better used around the city, and if you go off-road, then only lightly. Both models are adapted to the harsh Russian operating conditions and their high ground clearance allows them to successfully cope with the hardships of our roads, where in some places there is no asphalt surface. Here, each motorist must make an independent decision, weighing all the pros and cons.

If we compare the cross-country ability of both cars that participate in this comparison, it will turn out to be almost the same. The use of the same platform gave both Sandero and X-Rey the same ground clearance of 195 mm - which is a very good indicator for front-wheel drive cars. Some tests can verify that the actual curb clearance of the XRay is at least two centimeters higher.

Higher power ratings of the power units offered by the manufacturers of the Lada X-Ray will allow this car to feel much better on broken gravel and mud roads. In emergency situations, the engine power is enough to pull out a stuck car without the need for outside help. Therefore, in terms of cross-country ability, the domestic car outperforms its French competitor, even without waiting for the mass production of the all-wheel drive version of the Lada XRay Cross. This version is being developed specifically to improve cross-country ability, as a real SUV and the main competitor to both the domestic “Patriot” and pretentious foreign crossovers.

Interior comfort is the next criterion that needs to be assessed. In both Sandero and X-Ray, passengers will have the necessary legroom, and the body height will allow tall passengers and drivers not to rest their heads on the ceiling of the car.

X Ray was able to earn an extra point by more advantageously placing the on-board computer available in the basic configuration (used instead of the radio). It is located higher than that of the Stepway, not under the air conditioning sections (which is available as a separate option in trim levels above the base), but between them. Therefore, the driver does not have to deviate much from his line of sight to view the display.

Visual qualities

It is worth emphatically noting that visually the cars are almost equal, since they are made of the same body type and look quite similar.

Renault Sandero Stepway has an extremely calm and harmonious exterior design, with virtually no relief on the body (with the exception of longitudinal stamping along the sides of the body). It is quite massive, but at the same time elegant, looks nice and proportionate.

Lada XRay looks much more expressive - the reason for this is the aggressive stamping with sharp corners and edges on the front and rear wings. This X-shaped stamping became one of the calling cards of this car when the concept was shown in 2014. In the 2021 production version it has become even more pronounced.

If that was all that could be said, then X-Ray could be declared the winner. However, there are two shortcomings that level the situation. Firstly, the size of the wheels and body of the domestic model is too disproportionate. The wheels seem like toys because the body is too massive. Secondly, the stamping on the sides of the car, in the lower part, between the wheels, was an unsuccessful design decision - in the light it looks like a dent.

Comparison of pricing policies

For the simplest version of the Lada, you will have to pay 589 thousand rubles, and for the French analogue you will have to pay 630 thousand. Despite the difference in price, the domestic car has much better driving characteristics.

Thanks to this comparison, it becomes clear that the domestic version wins in many respects. Despite this, the French version does not look faded compared to its competitor. The choice, of course, is purely based on personal preference, since two cars really deserve attention.

In this price category there are many different options that can offer quite a lot, but not everyone can even come close to the performance of these two cars. The two cars look absolutely stunning from a visual point of view. The domestic car excels especially in this regard. It looks much more aggressive than its competitor. In terms of the choice of trim levels and interior features, again, the domestic car looks more acceptable. In general, if you need an inexpensive domestic car, then this is just a great option.

For those who want to get an equally high-quality, but foreign car, you should pay attention to the Renault Sandero

The budget Renault Sandero Stepway at AvtoVAZ was converted into almost the most expensive Lada - XRAY. We compared them and were surprised at the result.

A theater begins with a hanger, a car begins with a key. And if Renault is unlocked with a rough blank with a protruding sting, then the fashionable “throwaway” XRAY is not a shame to put on the table in a restaurant. The Lada, sparkling with ruby ​​metallic, is generally showing off - it frowned at the LED strips in the headlights, and stood up on the tiptoes of its light-alloy wheels. Look, they say, I’m not a hillbilly, but a stylish city car, a real SUV! And the people really turn around. Or is it a novelty effect?

XRAY is cheaper - from 589,000 rubles. For the Sandero Stepway you have to pay at least 629,990. At the same time, the basic Lada will have music with steering wheel controls, a stabilization system, ERA-GLONASS and an on-board computer, while the Renault will have 16-inch wheels, foglights, cruise control and metallic paint »

Sandero Stepway, on the contrary, cultivates brutality and diligently looks like an SUV: here you have unpainted plastic around the perimeter, “protective” plates under the bumpers, roof rails, and ordinary iron wheels, although disguised as castings...

Whose approach is correct? A matter of taste. But the fact is that XRAY turned out to be completely different from its prototype. And even in dimensions, Lada surpassed Renault - it has a slightly longer wheelbase and overall length. That is why ignorant people cannot believe that these cars are built on the common Renault-Nissan B0 platform.

Sometimes there is a feeling that when developing the Lada X-Ray, AvtoVAZ employees sought to distance it as much as possible from the Sandero, while knowing for sure that due to the presence of a single platform for both models, this probably would not be possible. And indeed, if you look at the cars from afar, it seems that the difference between them is significant, but as soon as they drive closer, it is practically leveled out.

It’s a strange feeling - the similarity of the models is visible in almost everything, from appearance to many engine characteristics, but once you start looking for differences, you find them almost immediately.

Clearance

According to the technical data sheet, both the Renault Sandero Stepway and the XRAY model have the same ground clearance value - 195 mm. But in real conditions, for a Renault car it will be slightly larger - 196 mm, while for the Lada X-Ray, on the contrary, it will be smaller - 191.

Length and width

If everything is, in principle, clear with the length of the car (Lada XRay - 4165 mm, Renault Sandero - 4080 mm), then with the difference in width it is worth understanding a little more. The fact is that with the stated difference of only 7 millimeters in favor of the Lada (Xray - 1764 mm, Sandero and in the Stepway version - 1757 mm), the track of the Sandero will be as much as 37 mm narrower, which, you see, is quite a lot.

When the trunks of both cars are closed, there is no sensation of difference, at least significant.

Interior

Lada Xray boasts a very interesting interior design. The so-called “saber design” is used - sharp bevels of the panels, turning into smooth lines, look like a harmonious solution.

Unfortunately, Renault Sandero cannot boast of anything like this - all the same familiar roundels of the dashboard, which became boring with their design even in the first Renault Logan models.

Interior

Inside, many people like the Lada's interior better. Buyers find it more harmonious and attractive. Powerful dashboard wells set the driver up for a dynamic ride and emphasize aggression in appearance. The 3-spoke steering wheel also contributes to this. The center console is decorated with a large display, and there are no complaints about its ergonomics, and the design of the dashboard itself completes the composition - smooth and devoid of sharp transitions.

The tidy of the Russian hatchback looks fun and organic.

Everything else is also excellent - good visibility, high-quality finishing materials, a spacious rear row and minimal flaws in the assembly.

Renault Duster is created in a different style. Its interior is a modified and improved version of the interior of the previous generation, which was almost completely copied by Logan. But in the restyled version, the dashboard has become much fresher - chrome edging has diluted the previously dull dashboard, depriving it of orange backlighting has also benefited the interior, the black gloss goes well with other materials, the new steering wheel format looks noticeably more expressive than the previous one. However, unlike X-Ray, Duster’s interior is replete with sharp transitions, niches and other things. However, there are no complaints about the convenience, as well as about the seating in the front row and rear sofa.

Motors, gearboxes and their capabilities

Choosing between the French Renault Sandero Stepway and the Russian Lada Xray is actually not so easy. There is no obvious superiority of Renault, contrary to the expectations of skeptics.

In many ways, you can get the answer to the question posed by looking at the technical characteristics of the two cars.

AvtoVAZ has prepared 3 engines for Xray. All of them are 4-cylinder and naturally aspirated, run on gasoline, meet Euro 5 environmental standards. The drive is exclusively front-wheel drive. Plus there are a couple of gearboxes.

  • The initial one is considered to be a 1.6-liter engine with a 16-valve timing belt. It produces 106 horsepower and 148 Nm of torque. Can only be combined with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The car accelerates from zero to hundreds in 11.9 seconds. The maximum speed with this engine is 170 km/h. In the combined cycle, 7.5 liters of fuel are required to cover 100 kilometers.
  • The middle engine is from Renault-Nissan. This is also a 16-valve unit with a volume of 1.6 liters and a timing chain drive. Produces 114 horsepower and 153 Nm of torque. It is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. The increase in power and torque made it possible to achieve acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds. The maximum speed increased to 171 km/h, and fuel consumption dropped to 6.9 liters in the combined cycle.
  • The top engine is developed by AvtoVAZ. This is a 1.8-liter internal combustion engine with 122 horsepower and 173 Nm. The gearbox can be 5-speed manual or robotic. With the robot it accelerates to hundreds in 10.9 seconds. at a maximum speed of 183 km/h. Fuel consumption is about 7.1 liters per 100 km. With mechanics, sprinting requires about 10.5 seconds. at the same maximum speed.

Quite good, especially for a domestic car.

Engine Renault Sandero

In order to determine which is better and more effective in the confrontation between Lada Xray and Renault Sandero, you should look into the engine compartment of the latter.

Currently, the updated 2nd generation Sandero Stepway is offered with 3 engines and 2 gearboxes. These are the same internal combustion engines as in the case of the regular Renault Sandero.

  • A 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine with an 8-valve timing belt was presented as the base engine. It produces a modest 82 horsepower and 134 Nm of torque. Combined with a 5-speed manual transmission.
  • Further down the hierarchy is another 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine, but this time with 16 valves. Works in tandem with an automatic transmission. The motor generates 102 horsepower and 145 Nm.
  • The top-end engine is a 1.6-liter engine with 16 valves and an output of 113 horsepower and 152 Nm. Works in conjunction with a 5-speed manual transmission. A CVT gearbox is also available to choose from.

In terms of dynamics, the car is not very impressive. Although you can’t expect anything else from the Renault Sandero Stepway. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes from 10.5 to 12.3 seconds. The maximum speed varies from 165 to 178 km/h. Fuel consumption will range from 7.0 to 7.6 liters per 100 km. path, depending on the engine and gearbox used.

All cars are equipped with full-size spare tires, albeit on regular stamped 15-inch wheels. The backs of all crossovers, except the Lifan X50, fold in a 2:1 ratio. A more or less flat floor (with a slight rise) is obtained only in the Lada XRAY (thanks to a special shelf separating the “underground” compartment) and in the H30 Cross. In Sandero and X50 high “steps” are formed. It is most convenient to load luggage in Dongfeng and Lada; Renault and Lifan are hampered by high “thresholds”, which greatly increase the loading height. The Dongfeng H30 has the most spacious trunk - as much as 417 liters. By folding the second row, it can be increased to 1137 liters. In second place is the Lada XRAY with a better layout and volume, 41 liters larger than that of the platform Sandero Sttepway (361 liters versus 320 liters). But in the “disassembled” state, the space in the trunks of these two cars is almost the same - 1207 and 1200 liters, again in favor of Lada. The most modest and inconvenient trunk (280 l) is in the Lifan X50. Nevertheless, the manufacturer claims the largest volume with the rear “sofa” folded - 1480 liters. Somehow we don’t really believe this

What to buy in the end?

Each driver must decide for what purpose he is taking the car. Based on this, we can conclude that Geely Coolray or Renault Kaptur is better. The first is considered a new product of the year and cannot demonstrate reliability. But it is already clear that it has a dynamic and sporty character. The second one has been sold in Russia for a long time, so experts managed to collect statistics. The popularity of the crossover ensures uninterrupted delivery of spare parts and ease of repair. The two models cost about the same. Geely will subsequently cost less, since repairs are cheaper for it and fuel consumption is lower. Renault has several transmission options, which allows you to choose the appropriate option and regulate fuel costs. The enemy only comes with a robotic box, the quality of which is questionable among experts.

Manufacturers sought to create compact crossovers aimed at the younger generation. Indeed, Kullrey will delight buyers with a special modern appearance and innovative technologies, to which the Swedes had a hand. Kaptur is noticeably distinguished by the presence of all-wheel drive and proven quality

Remarkable appearance and automated boxes attract the attention of women. The cars are ideal for driving not only on the highway, but also around the city.

Small dimensions, suitable transmissions and low fuel consumption ensure comfortable travel in populated areas. On the track they demonstrate fast acceleration, maneuverability and safety.

Crossovers are “contraindicated” for those who intend to transport large and bulky cargo. The small compartment is suitable for a shopping trip, but traveling or trips to the country will be difficult. If we talk about off-road capabilities, then Geely shows an extremely weak result and is not recommended for accessing even relatively minimal obstacles. Things are a little better with conquering difficult areas at Kaptur.

Duster vs X-Ray – battle of market leaders

Considering these two crossovers, I would like to remember the title of the famous film by N. Mikhalkov “One among strangers, a stranger among friends.”
Duster, born in 2009, immediately became popular among domestic car enthusiasts. Reliability, unpretentiousness, low cost - these qualities immediately appealed to Russian consumers and made it the king of all kinds of ratings and surveys. Over the years, he has “Russified” and become a part of our roads. It looks great on city highways and even better in Russian open spaces. The Lada X-Ray, which rolled off the assembly line of the Tolyatti VAZ in 2021, after many vague models of previous generations, looks like a kind of pacer among its relatives. The interest in it is enormous, but many are still looking closely at it: the price, which was usually lower for cars in our auto industry, is deterring. Also, many are waiting for the reaction of the first buyers regarding the testing of the new car.

Exterior of crossovers

The designers of the Renault-Nissan international alliance did a good job creating the new generation Duster. The car has matured and grown in overall dimensions: 4500 x 1822 x 1625 mm, wheelbase 2573 mm, ground clearance - 210 mm. Thanks to this ground clearance and the “indestructible” suspension, inherited from relatives, it is chosen for country family walks, trips to dachas, and to the village. The narrowed head optics are still equipped with halogen lighting. The fashion for LEDs did not affect French manufacturers. The bumpers and radiator grille have also changed. The rough, laborious appearance of the Daster has been smoothed out, but remains recognizable.

The designers of the Volga Automobile Plant, led by British chief Steve Mattin, managed to create a modern, attractive crossover for urban use. A reminder of the class of the car is the letter X, which is present in the name of the car, the shape of the radiator grille, and the embossed body surface. The wide smile resulting from the design of optical instruments and the radiator grille infects with optimism.

Dimensions of the new Lada: 4164 x 1764 x 1570 mm, the distance between the wheel axles is 2592 mm, the ground clearance is slightly less than that of the Frenchman, but also not bad - 195 mm. The brigantine depicted on the Lada emblem has become more impressive. Let's hope that the new ship will lead its owner, the Togliatti plant, on a successful voyage through the automobile market.
