What shock absorbers are best for a gazelle?

Characteristic

What it is? A shock absorber is a suspension element that serves to dampen vertical vibrations of the body, which are caused when hitting a hole or other uneven road surfaces.

It is the shock absorber that allows you to eliminate the car from rocking at speed and prevent the so-called pendulum effect. Therefore, this element is designed not only to increase comfort, but also traffic safety.

The process of replacing rear shock absorbers of UAZ Patriot

The need to replace the device is indicated by:

  • Oil stains on the product;
  • Cracks on the body or broken eye;
  • Jamming of the mechanism as a result of bending of the working rod;
  • Knocking or lack of smoothness when moving.

Replacing the rear shock absorbers of a UAZ Patriot does not require the use of sophisticated equipment. The work can be performed by a person with minimal technical knowledge. The lower edge of the product is attached to the rear axle of the car. The upper eye is installed on the vehicle body. There is no need to remove the wheels for replacement.

Replacing UAZ Patriot shock absorbers is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Place the car on a pit or overpass (some motorists do the work while lying down);
  2. Immobilize the vehicle. For this purpose, anti-recoil devices are used. The car must be set to the parking brake;
  3. Unload the suspension using a jack. When lifted, the wheel should not come off the surface;
  4. Clean threaded connections from dirt. A metal brush is used;
  5. Unscrew the lower fastening nut. Remove the bolt from the sleeve;
  6. Unscrew the nut and remove the washer of the upper fastening;
  7. Remove the shock absorber;
  8. Prepare a new product and press the bushings into the rubber pads;
  9. Install the shock absorber in reverse order.

ATTENTION: When replacing, the bushings must be inspected for damage. Deformed parts are replaced with new ones

Symptoms of a problem

How do you understand that the shock absorbers on a Gazelle have become unusable? Externally, this can be determined by characteristic drips. Inside the element there is an oily liquid, which serves as a kind of damper and moves from one chamber to another. If a breakdown occurs, the oil will leak out, and the driver will feel a deterioration in the car’s handling.

The car will begin to sway significantly. This is especially noticeable when fully loaded. If the rear shock absorber is faulty, the Gazelle will constantly sway from the slightest bump on the road. Also, a faulty cylinder causes characteristic dull knocks. They can be heard both inside and outside. Another sign is increased suspension stiffness. The car does not absorb bumps well, the impact is transmitted directly to the frame, and then to the body.

Oily

Such elements are installed on all Gazelles from the factory. Oil contains a small amount of gas. Thanks to the oil, vertical vibrations are dampened by the piston. What are the advantages of oil elements? Reviews say that such shock absorbers absorb bumps better because they are softer.

The smoothness of the ride and the energy intensity of the suspension are increased. These shock absorbers are much cheaper than their gas counterparts because they are easier to manufacture. But they also have disadvantages. Reviews say that such elements often fail. The resource ranges from 10 to 30 thousand kilometers. With prolonged exposure, the oil in the cylinder heats up significantly, which increases the risk of breakdown. And the properties of the oil themselves deteriorate due to high temperature. Also, oil does not like cold weather, so in winter such shock absorbers leak more often. Overnight, the liquid in the cylinder thickens significantly. When starting to move and in the first pits, the shock absorber endures enormous loads, as the piston moves jerkily. If you do not warm up the oil (to do this you need to move smoothly for the first 2 kilometers), you can easily ruin the shock absorber.

The next disadvantage is lateral roll. Every Gazelle owner knows how much the car rolls when cornering. With oil shock absorbers, the maneuverability of the machine is significantly reduced. With a full load and on sharp turns, it is better to pre-release the brakes.

Purpose and device

The front brake pads, like the rear ones, are designed to directly brake the wheels. Brake pads are a thick plate consisting of a steel base and a special lining. It is thanks to these linings that the direct braking effect is achieved. The linings are made of friction materials that have a low coefficient of friction. In particular, resins or rubber are used to produce pads for the UAZ Patriot car.

The photo below, for example, shows the thickness of the old and new front brake pads on a UAZ Patriot. As you can see, the friction lining is new, twice as large as the steel base. Over time, the friction part wears off and the pad becomes unusable. How to determine that products require replacement and what service life they have?

Old and new pads

When replacement is necessary

The first signal that the front brake elements on a UAZ Patriot SUV need to be replaced is a squeaking sound when braking. As soon as the driver detects an unpleasant squeak emanating from under the front wheels when pressing the brake pedal, it means that a scheduled replacement of the pads is required. When the friction part wears out, friction between the steel base and the disc begins, resulting in a decrease in braking efficiency.

The frequency of shifts can be tracked by vehicle mileage. Thus, if domestically produced elements are used on a UAZ Patriot SUV, then their service life does not exceed 10-15 thousand kilometers, after which they are replaced. For foreign-made products, the service life is at least 20-25 thousand kilometers. But here it should also be noted that these figures are approximate and the nature of driving plays a large role in the rate of their abrasion.

The cost of a set (including 4 pads) for a domestically produced UAZ Patriot ranges from 800 to 1000 rubles. Product catalog number – 3160-3501090. The number is necessary in order to accurately select the pads for your Patriot. Among foreign analogues, Patriot car owners give their preference to Finwhale V220, Hola BD818.

Replacement process

Front brake pads must be replaced as a set, otherwise braking performance will be reduced. If the thickness of the friction lining is less than 1.5 mm, then the product should be changed. The brake disc also deteriorates over time; in particular, this can be checked by measuring its thickness. If the value is less than 20.4 mm, the brake disc should be replaced.

Replacing the front products is carried out in the following order:

Using a jack, you need to lift the front of the car and remove the wheel. Now unscrew the 2 bolts of the pressure spring holding the products. To do this, you will need to use a 12mm wrench. Using a pry bar, you need to unclench the pistons to carry out the process of removing the elements

For even spinning, it is better to use two pry bars. Now you can remove both replaceable elements one by one. To avoid damaging the anthers, you must carefully remove the cylinders and monitor the amount of fluid in the tank. To avoid liquid leaking out of the tank, you must first pump it out with a syringe. New brake pads are being installed on the seats. A support spring is screwed in, with the help of which the replaceable elements are fixed.

At this point, the replacement of the front brake elements is completed and similar actions must be done on the other side of the SUV. After the process, it should be borne in mind that until the replaced devices rub against the disk, the braking efficiency will be insignificant.

To summarize, we note that front brake pads are important elements of the car system. Since if they malfunction, it is better to limit yourself from traveling by car until replacement is carried out.

Gas

Initially, such shock absorbers were developed for sports cars, but the Gazelle is not one of them. Why do they install gas elements on Gazelle Business and Sobol? It's simple. There is virtually no oil in the design of such shock absorbers. Accordingly, there is nothing here to heat up and thicken. Such elements withstand winter especially well.

The density of the air in the cylinder is much less than the density of the thickened oil, so you don’t have to warm up such shock absorbers and not be afraid that they will suddenly fail and leak.

Another plus is controllability. Gas shock absorbers are a little stiffer than their counterparts, so the car does not roll as much when cornering (although it is still far from a sports car). But at the same time, such elements also have a drawback. Since the rod moves a little more rigidly, such a shock absorber absorbs irregularities less well, which means the suspension will be uncomfortable in the pits. But, as reviews note, the smoothness of the Gazelle is not much different from that which comes with oil shock absorbers. The difference is only felt when the car is driving empty.

What to choose?

Among the imported ones, it is worth noting “Khola”. The price of a set of shock absorbers will cost 3.4 and 2.4 thousand for the first and second brands, respectively. But the problem is that the real Kayaba does not produce shock absorbers for the Gazelle. This will be a Chinese copy. Reviews say that such products are not of high quality. But what then? It is worth paying attention to the domestic manufacturer. SS-20 shock absorbers are produced in Samara and are in high demand among domestic car owners. This company produces products for all Russian cars, and Gazelle is no exception.

If we talk about oil shock absorbers, the SS-20 Optima element is suitable for the Gazelle Business. According to the manufacturer, they have increased energy consumption, which makes for more comfortable movement on uneven roads. But reviews say that there is no significant difference between SS-20 and other oil elements. The only difference is in the resource - these shock absorbers are truly durable. How much do such shock absorbers cost for a Gazelle? The price of the set is 3.5 thousand rubles.

The line also includes gas products. How much do such shock absorbers cost for a Gazelle? The price is 4 thousand rubles per set. The resource of the elements is about 70 thousand kilometers. The car behaves moderately harshly; the suspension does not tolerate significant impacts. We also note that the manufacturer provides a one-year warranty on its products.

Which shock absorbers for the Gazelle are compatible with other cars? For those who want to save money, there is the option of installing elements from the 53rd LAWN, but they are only suitable for the rear axle. Such shock absorbers are much cheaper; for example, the Aurora product for GAZ-53 costs about 450 rubles apiece.

Replacement

The replacement operation is simple; it can be done without a jack or inspection hole. To replace the front shock absorber on a Gazelle, you need to unscrew the lower shock absorber mounting bolt with a 19mm head, remove the washer and unscrew the upper fastening in the same way. Next, you should remove the element and install a new one outward in the same way, not forgetting to install the washers.

To change the rear shock absorber, you will also need a 19mm socket. Use it to first unscrew the lower bolt, and then the upper one. We take out the washers and the shock absorber itself. We install the new element and screw everything into place - first the top, then the bottom.

Replacing front shock absorbers UAZ Patriot

Algorithm for replacing shock absorbers on the front axle of a UAZ Patriot:

  1. Turn the front wheel in the direction opposite to the side of the unit being removed. Place chocks under the rear wheels and apply the parking brake.
  2. Unscrew the nut securing the lower eye, and then knock the bolt out of the socket. If the parts are rusty and stuck, it is recommended to treat the joint with a special liquid (for example, WD40). A mandrel is used to knock out the bolt; to access the work site, the wheel will need to be removed.
  3. Unscrew the locknut located on the top of the rod.
  4. Place the wrench on the edges made on the rod. Then use another wrench to unscrew the upper mounting nut.
  5. Remove the shock absorber from the hole in the upper bracket.
  6. Install the new strut in place and replace the upper damping ring. It is recommended to change shock absorbers in pairs, since different stiffness parameters negatively affect the safety of vehicle operation.

Which shock absorbers are better not to install on a GAZelle?

The stiffness of the shock absorber depends on how much liquid or gas passes through the valves per unit time. which shock absorbers are better for a GAZelle , based on the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Depending on their design features, they are classified into the following types:

· Hydraulic or gas devices.

· Monotube or twin-tube shock absorbers.

· Adjustable or unregulated units.

Choosing shock absorbers for GAZelle

Hydraulic devices are structurally composed of two cylinders. Liquid flows from one container to another cavity through calibrated bypass valve holes. Such devices are ideal for drivers who prefer quiet travel. But for those who like to drive fast, gas devices are recommended.

The response speed of gas shock absorbers is much higher, but they are more expensive. With frequent and rapid operation of hydraulic devices, the oil temperature rises. As a result, its fluidity decreases and the efficiency of the shock absorber decreases. The disadvantages of hydraulic devices, in addition to the high inertness of the oil, include their large mass.

Tips for choosing

Updated UAZ Patriot model with improved suspension

When releasing the latest Patriot models, UAZ updated the transmission. The shock absorbers remain the same, although they have a bad reputation among SUV enthusiasts and are replaced almost immediately after purchasing the car. However, the company has launched the production and sale of SS20 shock absorbers for UAZ Patriot. The main advantage of this device is that it increases the amount of oil, which reduces heat.

The main advantages of the new shock absorbers.

  1. Stronger and more reliable lugs.
  2. Improving the quality of the working fluid.
  3. More dynamic work in extreme conditions.
  4. Increased diameter of the rod and the body itself.
  5. Reduce heat.

When choosing new shock absorbers, the first thing you need to pay attention to is the dimensions. Since the front and rear suspension struts on the UAZ Patriot are not the same, their sizes will be different

When purchasing shock absorbers for a UAZ Patriot, it is necessary to take into account the installation and landing dimensions and rod movement parameters.

Experienced car owners recommend carefully checking shock absorbers for fakes. Recently, cases of sales of low-quality racks of dubious production have become more frequent.

You should pay attention to the welding points and markings, which on the originals are done using a point-impact method.

It is advisable to purchase shock absorbers from well-known companies. Fearing for their reputation, they do everything to keep the customer satisfied, monitor and prevent the appearance of counterfeits.

Before purchasing stands in a store, you should pay attention to the following points:

  • the markings on the rack match the catalog number of the UAZ Patriot;
  • no leakage in the cylinder and no dents on the device;
  • thread integrity and rod surface quality;
  • quality of the lip seal.

Something needs to change. To avoid problems, you need spacers and bumpers, as Lyosha wrote above, maybe

The length between the centers of the ears of gazelle ones is 375-580 mm, and for Patrovsky rear shock absorbers it is 350-560 mm.

If everything were interchangeable, then what kind of shocks do they give us according to the range and not the Gazelle ones at 250? Why couldn’t it be immediately possible to make fasteners for inexpensive Gazelle or GAZ-53 shock absorbers?

This is from the topic about Tokiko: “The length of the compressed Tokiko 3709 is 330mm (between the center of the ear and the support platform of the rod) versus 300mm for the 2360. The maximum extended Tokiko 3709 is 550mm versus 470mm

Tokyo 3710 - 350mm versus 355mm, extended - 570mm versus 560mm (dimensions along the axes of the “ears”).”

The Gazelle ones are another 15 mm longer than the 3710th Tokiki

Tokika 3375: 620 mm (630 according to other sources) is just right for leopards.

I installed BARS and amma springs from GAZelle, and also GAZelle bump stops. A couple of days later I saw that the rods on both shock absorbers were torn off. There are no spacers anywhere. What's wrong??

z.y. Ammas were installed at the service station; at that time I had absolutely no time. Bushings - polyurethane. I don’t rule out that they were dragged to death on the lift, perhaps because of this.
