By the end of the 1970s, it became clear that AvtoVAZ needed to expand its model range. This forced the then Soviet automobile plant to begin developing a new VAZ-2105 sedan, which was supposed to replace the Kopeyka. But, as it turned out, this model became the founder of a whole class of classic cars that AvtoVAZ produced until 2010. The first copies of the VAZ-2105 came off the assembly line in 1980. Subsequently, on the basis of this model, the manufacturer created an improved VAZ-2107 sedan and a VAZ-2104 station wagon.
Despite the fact that by the beginning of the 2000s the now Russian “Five” turned out to be both morally and technically outdated, it continued to be in fairly high demand. However, even with such sales as the car demonstrated, AvtoVAZ still decided to abandon its further development. The Soviet “Five” was replaced by Priora, which also eventually left the Russian market.
But, as the results of sales of used cars show, the VAZ-2105, 10 years after the completion of production, still remains in demand among domestic consumers. Moreover, Soviet Zhigulis are also popular with tuners, since this model has a simple design that is easy to change. In this regard, it is not surprising that images of what the Five might look like if it were to return to the market regularly appear on the Internet. However, the renderings now released reveal the car in new ways.

The presented images show the VAZ-2105 Zhiguli 2021-2022, made in the form of a compact SUV. Moreover, as noted earlier, the design of the car allows for such a modification. The presented model is also notable for the fact that it may appear in mass production. The fact is that the CMF-B-LS platform, which AvtoVAZ is beginning to implement in its cars, is precisely designed for compact cars. And the presented VAZ-2105, although designed for off-road use, stands out for its small size.
But even the introduction of the new platform will not have a noticeable impact on the engine range of the future SUV based on the Five. Taking into account the fact that the low price brought popularity to the VAZ-2105 sedan, the presented new product will probably borrow engines from the Lada Granta or, possibly, from the Niva Travel.

Design
Stylistically, the presented SUV VAZ-2105 Zhiguli 2021-2022 is close to the Soviet-Russian sedan. However, even the upper body has been significantly redesigned by an independent designer. Thanks to this, the result was a truly new SUV that retained its recognizable silhouette.
First of all, attention is drawn to the fact that the car body has a square outline. It looks as if it was drawn using only a ruler: the smooth hood at an unnoticeable angle flows into the A-pillars, which also flow quite sharply into the roof. The new product has a pronounced window sill line, made in the form of an original protrusion that separates the glass from the rest of the doors. The rear pillars also transition relatively sharply into a flat trunk lid that runs vertically in relation to the road surface.
The design implemented in the presented SUV looks outdated. However, if you pay attention to the latest innovations from Hyundai, Tesla and a number of other companies, it becomes clear that the current trend in the automotive world is precisely aimed at reviving the styles used in the second half of the 20th century. Even Toyota has announced that it intends to bring back a sports car from the 90s to the market. That is, the presented VAZ-2105 is fully in line with the spirit of the times.
The front and rear parts of the body of the new SUV, like the previous sedan, have the shape of an elongated cube. But the presented “Five” is designed slightly differently than the classic “Zhiguli”. In particular, the car received a completely new head optics with several bending LED strips. Moreover, like their predecessor, they are placed in rectangular sections. Above them lies another LED strip, running under the edge of the hood. It makes up the upper part of the perimeter of a relatively large rectangular radiator grille, inside of which there is a fine mesh and 2 horizontal slats.
One of the main features of the presented VAZ-2105 Zhiguli 2021-2022 SUV, which sets it apart from the Soviet model, is the front and rear bumpers. The first is supplemented on the sides with large square cutouts, which are reserved for ventilation holes. There is a decorative plastic insert at the bottom of the bumper. The profile part of the body of the new product was also replenished with a wide body kit made of unpainted plastic. When viewing the presented model from the side, attention is drawn to the increased ground clearance and larger rims.
The food of the new product, in comparison with the classic VAZ-2105, has undergone fewer changes. Thus, the SUV was equipped with the same rear lights, inside of which horizontal LED strips were fixed. The rear bumper of the new product turned out to be larger than that of its predecessor. But at the same time it is still going downhill.
Exterior and interior
The exterior of the car has angular and straight shapes. At the front there is a metal bumper with plastic overlays, rectangular headlights with built-in turn signals and a branded radiator grille, and the rear is topped with vertical lighting units, a large tailgate and a similar bumper.
The interior of the car of later versions looks more modern and neat. As befits a car of this class, there is an increased amount of usable space inside. Positive qualities include an informative instrument panel, convenient location of the main controls and comfortable front seats.
Specifications
As previously noted, with a high degree of probability the VAZ-2105 Zhiguli SUV 2021-2022 will receive low-power engines. One of the candidates for this role is the 1.7-liter “atmospheric” unit, which is currently installed on the Niva Travel. This engine produces no more than 80 hp. power.
It is also possible to transfer the presented new product to the Lada Granta engine range. In this case, by default, the revived “Five” will receive a 1.6-liter engine that develops up to 87 hp. (soon the power will be increased to 90 hp) or 98 hp. In more expensive versions, this engine produces up to 106 hp. In the first and last cases, the engine is combined with a manual transmission. The 98-horsepower unit is complemented by an automatic transmission, the most powerful is also equipped with a robot. The appearance of all-wheel drive on the presented SUV is unlikely, since its design is not designed for such a transmission.
Lada Tarzan or VAZ all-wheel drive
Thoughts about a VAZ 2110 with all-wheel drive visit many car owners, but not everyone knows that in the late 90s they began producing a 4x4 SUV called “Tarzan”.
The main point was to combine two cars: Niva and VAZ 2109-12. In 1997 the original Russian SUV “Tarzan” appeared. The designers combined the cross-country ability of the Niva with the body design of the front-wheel drive VAZ. All units, except the frame and extended cardan shafts, are serial. Unlike VAZ passenger cars, Tarzan has a longer wheelbase and independent rear suspension, which has a positive effect on the car’s behavior on the highway. Due to the frame design, specialists managed to increase strength and durability, and the longitudinal location of the engine made it possible to install all-wheel drive without significant changes. In total, this significantly reduced noise and vibrations in the car interior. The frame chassis, transmission and suspension components are from Niva 21213, but with minor changes. For example, cardan shafts of changed length. Lada Tarzan has an independent rear suspension, which is assembled using parts from the front suspension. Therefore, the Russian SUV has rear disc brakes, and it is also possible to adjust the suspension stiffness individually. The first generation Tarzan Lada Samara had three types of bodies: VAZ-210834, VAZ-210934, VAZ-2109934. Two years later, the Tarzan-2 SUV appeared. The restyled model first borrowed the station wagon body (2111-90) of the tenth family (VAZ 2111 Tarzan). Then the hatchback 2112-90 appeared (it is sometimes called “Tarzan-3” or “Tarzan-Sport”). There is also a utilitarian version called “Tarzan-UTS”. These versions of SUVs are equipped with an original plastic top. Unlike the first Tarzan, the second one does not have plastic linings, has wider 15-inch wheels, embossed wheel arches, and pipe-pegs. A new VAZ-2130 engine was also installed, with a displacement of 1.8 liters and a power of 82 hp. at 5400 rpm. The controllability of the new Tarzan turned out to be closer to the desired one. In any case, the information content of the steering gear did not cause the negative impression that Tarzan-1 had. There are also disadvantages that are caused by the greatly increased height: the lateral stability and aerodynamics of the body are much worse. Since such SUVs were assembled only to order, the VAZ Tarzan sale does not have a wide range. Accordingly, you can only buy Tarzan second-hand and at a price that can be quite high due to the uniqueness and rarity of the car.
