Wiper motors: how to check them? Replacing the windshield wiper motor. How to connect and remove them? Power and other characteristics

Windshield wiper motor when repairs are required

Welcome, friends, to the DIY car repair website. Windshield wipers are an indispensable attribute of any car.

Whatever the car is - cheap or expensive, domestic or foreign, passenger or truck, it must have wipers.

The main thing is that they are in good working order and ready to work. In this case, the main element that is responsible for the motor function is the windshield wiper motor.

How does a windshield wiper motor work?

The device operates in two or three modes, which allow the brushes to provide intermittent, slow or fast cleaning.

The overall design includes a wiper motor (a small motor with a gearbox), a brush return mechanism, a lever system and the cleaning rubber bands themselves. In parallel with the cleaner, you can use the windshield washer, which supplies water in the form of a directed jet.

One of the most unreliable elements of the system, which often fails, is the motor. If it breaks down, motorists do not know what to do and what the reasons may be.

Windshield wiper motor – when is repair inevitable?

When driving a car in adverse weather conditions, timely cleaning of the windshield is of great importance, and the question often arises of how to check the windshield wiper motor. The main purpose of the unit is to rid the car's wind opening of moisture, snow and other precipitation, so let's figure out how to keep this mechanism in working condition.

Windshield wiper motor - what is it and how does it work?

Modern cars are equipped with two windshield wipers, which for the front window have a double design (there are two rubber bands on the blade for more efficient operation), and for the rear window - a single version. Most windshield wipers operate in three main modes. These modes are intermittent, slow and fast operation.

A windshield wiper includes in its design an electric motor with a gearbox, a system of levers, brushes and a mechanism that automatically returns the car wipers to their original position. The windshield washer operates simultaneously with the cleaner. When this small but important mechanism stops working, you should not hesitate to fix it, because the weather is rarely predictable.

Windshield wiper motor repair - how to determine the cause of the breakdown?

There may be several reasons why the windshield wiper does not work; we will consider common situations below. First of all, there may be no contact between the commutator and the brushes. If, after disassembling the electric motor and cleaning the contacts, the fault has not been resolved, then in this case, most likely, repair of the windshield wiper motor is necessary, but there are several other options that are worth checking before drastic measures are taken.

If the levers are jammed or the gearbox is stuck, the bimetallic fuse may trip. Then your system will also not respond to attempts to turn it on. Naturally, by adjusting the position of these components and replacing the fuse, this problem can be solved. After correcting the problem, the windshield wiper should work normally.

Motor malfunctions and solutions

Let's look at what to do if the windshield wiper motor does not work, and what can cause such problems. There are several options:

1. The electric motor does not work, the bimetallic fuse is inactive, and the fusible insert responsible for powering the wipers is intact. In this case, you need to check the serviceability of the wiring, the quality of connections of all contacts, determine any existing damage and eliminate them.

If everything is fine with the wiring, then you should check the wiper switch. If it acts up, just replace it. The engine itself may not work - this often happens when brushes stick or contact connections burn.

In this case, you need to repair the windshield wiper motor - inspect it, replace faulty elements, and clean dirty components. It is important to check the integrity of the wiring that connects the electric motor and the block.

The next step is to check the bimetallic fuse, which needs to be cleaned, and if repair is impossible, simply discarded and replaced with a new one. If this does not help, check the motor armature winding for integrity. If there is no chain, then it is necessary to replace the armature or the entire mechanism as a whole.

2. The bimetallic fuse works, the motor does not start, and the power fuse constantly blows. The first thing to do is check the integrity of the levers. Often they do not work due to deformation or freezing of the brushes to the windshield.

The worst thing is if the cause of such a problem is a short circuit in the armature circuit. Here, repairing the fault is possible in only two ways - by installing a new armature or replacing the gearbox.

3. Interrupt mode does not work. Here the problem is either the relay or the wiper switch. In the first and second cases, it is better to replace the faulty element.

4. The wipers do not stop in interrupt mode. The reason is a relay failure or a malfunction of the limit switches. In the latter case, the gear cam of the gearbox simply does not press the spring plate. The problem is solved by bending it a little.

How to check the windshield wiper trapezoid motor?

There is a front windshield wiper motor with the code - 85110-21040, what contacts should I connect and what voltage should I give it to to check if it works? I connected it according to the diagram, it doesn’t spin, I think I don’t understand the diagram correctly. Please advise. Contacts on it (+2, E, +1, B, S).

I forgot to add that he is at home. Home conditions.

if the motor is at home, pick it up, there are usually no more than two contacts, supply 12V DC voltage from a regular car battery (the power supply from some household appliance may not have enough current), polarity does not matter when checking.

How to replace a windshield wiper motor?

The biggest problem is the failure of the mechanism that drives the wipers on the windshield. In such a situation, it is necessary to dismantle the engine, repair it, and in some cases, replace it. Let's look at how to remove the windshield wiper motor (using the VAZ-2109 as an example).

The replacement algorithm is as follows:

Then there are two options - repair or replacement of the windshield wiper motor. Monitor the condition of the wiper motor and inspect the entire system from time to time.

Otherwise, the brushes may fail at the most unpredictable moment. Have a good trip and of course no breakdowns.

Checking and removing the windshield wiper motor VAZ-2109

An element such as the engine responsible for operating the windshield wipers on a VAZ-2109 car does not occur often, but if this happens, it must be replaced.

It is essentially simple, but the procedure itself is time-consuming, especially for those car owners who do not have the proper experience.

First, you need to turn off the system. To do this, simply disconnect the negative terminal on the battery.

  • place the windshield wiper arms in a vertical position;
  • remove the nuts from the rollers;
  • remove the protective caps;
  • tighten the nuts (one side), the mounting brackets on top;
  • disassemble the rubber sealing washers;
  • in the engine compartment, the wiring harness has been removed from the connector;
  • unscrew the bolts that hold the lower part of the bracket;
  • the mechanism rollers are removed from the holes;
  • unscrew the nut that secures the windshield wiper handle and remove it;
  • remove the bolts that hold the windshield wiper and motor in place;
  • disconnect the wires from the bimetallic fuse and remove the engine from the bracket.

All that remains is to remove the retaining ring and washers from the gearbox shaft and install the new motor. Reverse assembly.

For convenience, it is recommended to slightly move the oven fan to the right. Without this, the wiper cannot be removed. You will also need to remove the fuse box cover and any relays located there.

Before removing the wiper itself, you need to move it slightly to the left.

The pads are best numbered to avoid confusion during assembly.

Disassembling the gearbox

If the cleaner does not work due to contamination of the gearbox, it is easy to clean. But under no circumstances unscrew the adjusting screw installed in it. in the event of an unpleasant event, you most likely will not be able to properly return the anchorage gap.

The procedure looks like this:

  • remove the protective panel from the gearbox;
  • remove the transmission;
  • they remove the cage nuts after unscrewing two bolts;
  • The gearbox housing is disconnected together with the brush holder from the engine;
  • the anchor is removed and cleaned with a compressor.

Removing the rear wiper is usually done the same way, but you will need to remove the door trim to get to the wires and other parts.

Engine repair

Many people think that replacing the engine with a foreign car from a similar engine will solve the problem with the slow operation of the windshield wiper blades, but in fact, the “original” motor is quite easy to clean and lubricate.

If the post causes speed, you should check how easily the armature rotates: if the movement is difficult, you should expect damage or very high wear on the brush. They are easy to exchange for new ones.

This will also help clean the manifold. For this you will need sandpaper. They talk about the need for this procedure:

  • visible contamination;
  • noticeable scratches;
  • grooves on the metal.

The armature or gearbox in combination with the engine assembly must be replaced if the manifold is severely worn or burnt out.

Speed control is necessary if the windshield wiper blades operate very slowly. This is facilitated by:

  • inappropriate (very “thick”) lubricant;
  • gear wear;
  • deformation of rods.

Eliminating these problems basically makes the windshield wipers work faster and, in addition, significantly.

15.4 Checking the wiper motor

Checking the wiper motor

The wiper motor is located in a waterproof housing under the windshield, and the rear wiper motor is located in the rear gate. To check, remove the corresponding backing. The wiper motor will be considered in the future and the rear wiper will work properly.

Checking the wiper

  1. First find out whether the faulty motor is a cleaner motor or voltage. To do this, proceed as follows.
  2. Disconnect the multi-core connector from the wiper motor.
  1. Use an auxiliary cable to supply voltage from the positive terminal of the battery to terminal c. (The negative pole of the engine is connected to the battery minus through the housing).
  2. The wiper motor should now operate at stage 1 (slow). If it doesn't work, it means the engine or 1st gear is faulty.
  3. Connect the positive cable to the terminal and to the left of the terminal with . The motor should now run quickly in stage 2.

Checking the rear wiper

  1. Connect the positive battery cable to terminal A and the ground to terminal B of the plug and check that the engine runs.
  1. Then disconnect the ground from terminal B and immediately connect it to the motor frame. The engine should stop and stop.
  1. Connect the auxiliary cable from the positive terminal of the battery to terminal B. Connect a ground from the negative terminal of the battery to terminal a. Terminal B is located at the bottom left, terminal and at the bottom right.
  2. The wiper motor should operate in step 1 (slow). If this does not work, the engine or first stage is faulty.
  1. Connect the negative cable to terminal C. Terminal c is located above terminal and . The motor should now run the second steps (fast).

Checking the rear wiper

  1. Connect the positive battery cable to the terminal and . the grounding cable to terminal b and make sure that the engine is running.
  2. Then remove the ground from the terminal. b and immediately connect to the engine housing. The engine should stop and stop.
  3. If the windshield wiper motor is faulty, install a new one, see Section. Heater, lighting system, household appliances . Section Removal and installation of the rear windshield wiper motor .
  4. Connect the front wiper motor connector.

Windshield wiper design elements

Design features depend on the type of device and the type of fastening elements. The standard windshield wiper circuit consists of the following parts:

  • lever drive (trapezoid);
  • leashes;
  • relay for controlling operating modes;
  • electronic control unit (if equipped);
  • electric motor with gearbox;
  • hinged fastenings;
  • brushes

Design of windshield wipers
Additionally, control devices are provided. For example, for manual control, a steering column switch for windshield wiper operation modes is used, and for automatic mode, a special electronic control unit and a sensor for analyzing glass contamination (rain sensor) are installed in the vehicle.

Sometimes this mechanism begins to function at only one speed. In this case, the switch or resistor is most likely faulty. The brushes may not be installed in the lower position; to do this, it is necessary to adjust the stopping mechanism. There are often situations when, when you turn on the windshield wiper, extraneous sounds appear in the form of creaking or grinding. If this is not due to the dryness of the glass or the presence of sand under the rubber brushes, then, apparently, something is acting up inside, so it’s time to look deeper.

The wipers don't work. They don't move at all. When you turn on the wipers you can hear the relay clicking. I removed the motor assembly with the trapezoid. I checked the bimetallic fuse for the motor mount; it is there. QUESTION: How can I check if the windshield wiper motor is working properly?

PS. In the connector for connecting the motor I found one + it is permanent, on the other wires there is no plus on any of them, it doesn’t matter whether the brushes are on or off.

There are two wires from the motor. Give one a plus, the other a minus and check.

Doesn't it spin in all modes?

take the diagram. smoke it. First of all, check for the presence of + 12V after the bimetallic fuse, if it is external to the motor. If there is no +12V or it disappears immediately after it appears, then: - the bimetallic fuse has blown - the motor or trapezoid (usually the shafts on which the wiper arms are attached) are jammed. It’s better to check them manually right away - they should turn very easily.

Let's move on to the second stage. If the wiper relay clicks in all modes, then two malfunctions appear: - the insides of the fuse block are out of order - check the voltage at the contacts of the upper connector of the fuse block with a tester (better) or a tester. It is better to compare the voltage with the voltage at the battery contacts. If it is significantly lower or absent, then the problem is in oxidized contacts and the insides of the fuse box. — the gearbox of the motor is jammed, its windings are burnt out (checked by a continuity tester), the contacts inside the motor are oxidized, the adjusting screw of the worm gear is overtightened, the bearings are scattered/acidified. Motor disassembly, cleaning, lubrication.

Voltage can be supplied directly to the motor, if in a car, then it’s a good idea to use a fuse or a light bulb in series to prevent a short circuit from happening accidentally (in general, follow safety precautions when working with electrical installations).

Variants and combinations of the above should lead to a positive result.

Replacing a windshield wiper motor - how to remove the device?

Sometimes the rear wiper motor, just like the front one, simply fails. It is unlikely that this will be a frequent breakdown, but if it catches you, there is nothing you can do, you will have to figure it out. In order to repair the device, it must be removed, and this is a rather labor-intensive process. As an example, classic VAZ models are usually given, which most fully demonstrate the entire technical process. So, removing the motor takes place in several stages:

After a visual inspection, all unusable parts should be replaced. If restoration is not possible, then you should purchase a new motor. Reassembling the entire glass cleaning system is carried out in reverse order.

Windshield wiper motor does not work

Hi all. Such a misfortune happened. At one point, the wipers simply stopped working. The first thought is the fuse. I'll go under the hood and the corresponding fuse will burn out. I put another one on and it immediately burns out. Another one - the same. I disconnect the contact from the motor, install a fuse, just connect the contact - it burns out. OK. Due to very strict necessity and knowing some of the peculiarities of the Russian “maybe”, I take a screwdriver and with the side of the handle I lightly tap the motor from all possible sides. I set the fuse, connect the motor - silence. I turn on the wipers and they work! That's the end of the fairy tale. And whoever fixed it is a great guy. The horseradish was there... We are not in a fairy tale.

The next day the same bullshit. And as luck would have it, we had such a rainy week. I open the hood and carry out “repairs” according to a well-established scheme. Horseradish. Okay... I'm going to work as is. And I have to tell you, in the rain and without wipers - a specific pleasure...

In the evening I decide to replace the motor because I can’t live like this any longer. But, having learned the price of 3000 rubles

, a week of waiting and looking into the family budget, I understand that
this little engine is not so bad
+))) Why bury it ahead of time?+)))

I am attempting DIY repair #1.

Although a repairman makes me like a rheumatologist from a gopnik. So that you understand, I looked at the windshield wiper motor for the first time in my life. No, I'm not blonde. I just don’t like tinkering with cars and do it extremely rarely and only in the most critical situations.

Attention. This is my first time performing this trick. There may be easier ways to remove it, but I didn't know about them.

Before you start repairing, read the article to the end!

Removal:
1.
Remove both wipers.
2.
Remove the plastic parts that surround the wipers. To do this, using a flat screwdriver, remove the rubber seal that goes through both plastic parts and is attached to the pistons. Next, the right part is lifted and the left one is taken out from under it (in the direction of travel). There is simply a piston hidden under the right part that secures the left part.

4.

By hand, with force in one direction or another, we turn the motor driver (the metal part attached to the nut) to the vertical upward position.
5.
On the other hand, from the engine compartment, unscrew the motor itself. There are four bolts.

With the motor removed:

We analyze everything that can be understood. We watch everything and everywhere. And we put it back. Check - it works! But not for long. About a day. Why? Who knows…

I give up.

I’m going to take the motor for diagnostics to the same service center that recently installed a new generator for me.
Verdict - replacement motor. The electric motor itself is working properly, but a hole has formed on the plastic gear, into which one of the contacts falls and jams the movement of the motor. And even if you are careful, even just a little bit, there is no way to fix it.
No way. Somehow they explained everything to me in this spirit.

Having reviewed my budget again, I understand that I have nothing to lose now

, but I still have hope for a bright future.

“Why am I not Russian or what?”

I'm making another attempt to repair the motor.

Because at the moment I already know all the features of the breakdown.

As an experienced master, in 5 minutes I remove the motor and take it home.

At home, upon a detailed inspection, the words of the service technician begin to reach me. Indeed, under the plastic casing in the area of the metal contact ring, “caries” has formed in one place on the inner circle. A small hole into which the contact fell. When you figure it out, you will understand everything yourself.

Well, if you have caries, then you need to get a filling.

Plastic seal. There is still no way out.

I hope everyone at least once in their life melted some kind of plastic and dripped it onto the asphalt, the legs of their comrades and other objects?+)))

It was decided to stupidly bury the “caries” with molten plastic

and clean the area with sandpaper.

We are preparing a cleaning kit consisting of a shot glass with vodka, women's cotton pads, cotton swabs, and various tools in the form of thin screwdrivers.

1.

Remove the metal contact ring.
2.
Feel free to remove the old grease using cotton pads and napkins.

3.

We very carefully scrub off the “caries” with cotton swabs dipped in vodka. Because if you drip plastic onto an oiled part, it will not stick to the part.

4.

Gradually carefully dig up the plastic. For the material I used white plastic ties. The plastic in them is quite durable and fusible.

5.

Using sandpaper, we grind off the excess plastic deposit until a smooth surface is formed and the contact can slide unhindered.

6.

Since we disassembled the motor, it would be a shame not to lubricate it with fresh lithol (or something like that). I didn't have lithol. I just went to the nearest service center and asked the men to spread it in a plastic cup for me. Agree, it’s stupid to buy a whole tube if you need 10-20 grams? I am provided with the first service and lithol.

Operating principle and purpose of the motor

The windshield wiper motor is one of the main components of the entire system. Its purpose is to ensure the movement of the brushes along the windshield and rear window (if we are talking about a hatchback or station wagon). The windshield wiper motor itself supports operation in several modes - slow, intermittent, and the fastest.

In general, the design of the wipers includes an electric wiper motor with a gearbox, a unit that returns the blades to their place, as well as levers and the brushes themselves. As a rule, a washer device also functions with the brushes, providing water supply to the glass. The windshield wiper motor itself is considered one of the most unreliable components, which fails quite often.

Electric motor for the domestic "ten" in removed form

What is a windshield wiper motor?

All cars, trucks and other vehicles are already equipped from the factory with mechanisms for cleaning glass, including windshield wiper blades. In its standard form, it consists of two holders with rubber bands on the windshield and one holder on the rear window (for cars with a station wagon or hatchback body). All windshield wipers have three modes of operation, during which they move quickly, slowly or at an intermittent pace.

All windshield wipers are equipped with a special electric motor with geared torque transmission. Two mechanisms designed to operate the windshield wipers are attached to the motor shaft. One rotates the wipers to a certain position on the windshield, and the second is responsible for moving the wipers to their original position. The lever system supports the wipers throughout operation.

In fact, the electric motor rotates without stopping, and a special mechanism is responsible for moving the wipers, which allows them to rotate and quickly return to their original position. This mechanism is called a trapezoid wiper. It consists of a set of levers that move the wipers across the windshield.

In addition to the windshield wipers, the glass washer system is also responsible for a normal view of the front of the road. It is a tank with a special liquid, which, under the action of a pump installed in the tank, is pumped into the system and sprayed on the windshield. It is extremely important that these mechanisms are always in good working order. This is due to the fact that on the planned day of the trip the weather can easily turn bad and driving with a faulty windshield wiper system can become very dangerous.

Instructions for replacing the windshield wiper motor

If, as a result of diagnostics, you determine that the windshield wiper motor does not work, then the failed unit will need to be replaced. There is nothing difficult about this; even a beginner can cope with this task. But you need to take into account that the replacement procedure may be different for a particular vehicle. Therefore, before changing the unit, familiarize yourself with the technical features of the system and read the service manual for the car. We will describe the procedure using the example of a traditional VAZ.

The main symptoms of failure of the windshield wiper motor or trapezoid

The windshield wiper system includes two main elements that drive the blades - a gear motor and a so-called trapezoid. If, when the right steering column switch is installed in the appropriate position, the brushes do not move, this may indicate either a malfunction of the motor electric motor or a jammed trapezoid.

As a rule, when the shafts and hinges of the mechanism are severely oxidized, the windshield wipers do not stop working “at once.” Up to this point, there is a slowdown in the speed of movement of the brushes and their wedging in various positions. This is a sufficient reason to think about taking appropriate preventive measures (see the article Prevention of the trapezoid and windshield wiper motor) or replace the trapezoid and windshield wiper motor .

The cause of the malfunction may also be damage to the contacts or a short circuit in the motor caused by moisture getting inside. Usually in such a case the fuse responsible for the wipers blows out. Please note that the windshield washer continues to function in this case. Another common cause is the formation of plaque and rust on the engine shaft or joints as a result of corrosion.

Road safety comes first

Whatever electronic security systems the car is equipped with, it is necessary to monitor it all. As practice shows, the least attention is paid to wipers and elements of this system.

Many people ignore the symptoms of failure of the same motor, wiper blade or injectors. As long as it works, it's good. That is why the system remains maintenance-free from purchase to sale of the car. However, the wiper motor has its own specific resource, which increases significantly if the unit is periodically serviced.

Wipers do not work: ways to fix the problem

In the event of a failure of this unit, it is recommended that you first pay attention to the mounting block and the integrity of the fuse and relay. If everything is in order there, then we move on to the next stage. When fluid is not supplied to the windshield, you should immediately check the lines. It is likely that one of the tubes has come off the tee and the washer fluid is simply pouring out under the hood.

Correcting this situation is quite simple. It is necessary to remove the trim under the hood and connect the hose to the tee. In some cases, the procedure can be performed without dismantling the protection, simply bending its edge.

After checking the lines, we move on to the injectors. Over a long period of use, they can become clogged. To clean them, you can use the most ordinary needle. If after this the wipers do not work, then we move on to the motor.

Windshield wiper motor repair

In most cases, this unit is maintenance-free, that is, not dismountable. But this does not stop experienced motorists. This is especially true in cases where there is no extra money for a new motor. To do this, take a metal cloth. It is necessary to cut the motor at the transition point (step). We separate it into two parts and see the armature, winding and core.

All these parts are usually not in the best condition and usually show signs of corrosion. It is necessary to thoroughly clean the motor elements. Fine-grained sandpaper or another similar product is suitable for this. For example, the VAZ wiper motor has such a weak point as the oil seal. Over time, it cracks and leaks liquid into the body, causing the parts to become covered with dirt and begin to rust. This may damage the device.

Diagnostics of the condition of the trapezoid and wiper motor

The easiest way to identify the cause of the problem is to remove the trapezoid and the wiper motor. You can try first disconnecting the trapezoid and checking whether the motor shaft will rotate without load. Before this, you need to use a tester to determine whether current is supplied to the contacts leading to the motor. If the shaft rotates slowly, most likely it is due to a lack of lubrication; if it does not rotate at all, the windings, brushes or motor contacts may be damaged.

To accurately determine the cause of the malfunction, it is necessary to disassemble the motor and trapezoid. In most cases, identified deficiencies can be easily eliminated. The exception is significant mechanical damage to engine components due to excessive wear.

At the first signs of a malfunction of the motor and windshield wiper trapezoid, it is better to immediately find out their causes, so that at the most inopportune moment you do not lose this very necessary device. The most accurate picture will be given by a visual inspection, which can be done after removing and disassembling the motor and trapezoid.

Rubber seals

Gaskets and seals are made of rubber. Over time, they lose their positive properties. Due to temperature changes, they become tanned and crack; this also happens due to an aggressive environment. For this simple reason, seals need to be changed periodically.

If you do not do this, it is quite possible that the device will fail. The next time you service the glass cleaning system, it is advisable to change the seals and rubber gaskets.

Don't forget that the wiper blades themselves are also rubber and should also be checked regularly. Often replacement is performed once a year. If the brushes are made of silicone and of high quality, then they can last a couple of years, but hardly more. This is due, again, to temperature changes.

Replacing the wiper motor

If you don’t have the time or desire to do independent repairs, then you can simply purchase a new motor and install it in place of the old one. But first of all, you need to make sure that it is faulty. Often the problem is in the wiring, a fuse has burned out or the contacts have oxidized. All this can lead to the fact that the motor will not show signs of life.

We check the wiring where it connects to the motor. You can also use a multimeter. If voltage is supplied to the contacts, then the problem is in the motor itself. If not, then first check the condition of the fuse, and then look for an open circuit.

All these procedures will not take much time, but there should be a result in the end. For such work, a service station can charge several thousand rubles, or even more. Therefore, it makes sense to do this yourself. If the problem is still in the motor, then it needs to be changed or repaired.

Malfunctions of the steering column switch

This unit often fails on cars with high mileage. It is usually maintained throughout the entire life of the vehicle. Over time, the contacts burn out, which becomes the main reason for the malfunction of the steering column switch.

You can either repair it yourself or simply replace it with a new one. The second option is naturally expensive. Depending on the make of the car, the switch can cost from 2 to 20 thousand rubles. In this case, it is quite logical to do repairs, especially since there is nothing complicated about it.

We dismantle the switch and carry out a visual inspection for defects. If there are burnt contacts, then take a soldering iron and correct the situation. Almost always, the steering column switch can be repaired, the only exceptions being cases of board failure, although there are craftsmen here too.

Types of brushes

Car manufacturers provide car owners with a choice of brush types. Depending on the design and operational characteristics, they can be of the following types:

Frame brushes

  1. Frame brushes are the best and affordable option. They adapt well to the working surface of the windshield, but deteriorate the quality of cleaning at sub-zero temperatures and high speeds.
  2. Frameless wipers are a more expensive option that provides high-quality glass cleaning. The device is more resistant to freezing and also lasts longer. Among the disadvantages, it is necessary to note the difficulty of selecting brushes to ensure proper fit to the glass.
  3. Hybrid windshield wipers - these are often called winter wipers due to their closed design and moisture resistance. Ideal for regions with low temperatures, where it is important to ensure the functionality of the cleaning system.

Let's sum it up

The price of a windshield wiper motor varies significantly depending on the car. Usually it costs several thousand rubles for a VAZ and more expensive for foreign cars. If only the pump is changed, then everything is simpler. When the entire assembly with the electric motor is replaced, the cost of such pleasure is not small.

In any case, it makes sense to audit the system, find faulty parts and try to repair them; if that doesn’t work, replace them with new ones. It is worth highlighting the following main malfunctions of the glass cleaning system according to the main features:

As for other breakdowns, everything is individual. In one case, the problem may lie in a faulty nozzle, in another - in the pump. A thorough inspection from small to large will in any case lead you to the unit that has failed.

For example, the rear wiper motor breaks down extremely rarely, since it is not used so intensively. Modern cars are equipped with one pump for both the windshield and rear window. This simplifies the task somewhat, because the fewer parts in the assembly, the more reliable and simpler it is.
