The first representative of the generation of the Kalina model became a sedan with the index (Lada 1118). Budget sedan Lada Kalina, production of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant began production in 2004. Quite a lot of time has passed since the development of the Lada 1118 until its appearance on the assembly line. Prototypes of the model appeared in the 2000s, although the development and design of the Lada Kalina 1118 sedan began back in 1993. Many people like the appearance of the Lada Kalina, its rounded design shapes, in a word, in a unisex style, as is customary among the progressive generation. More expensive models are equipped with airbags, a good media system, air conditioning, a heating system for mirrors and front windows, fog lights, and have a combined seat trim. When driving on rough roads, the car easily goes over small bumps and dents, and the vibration of the steering wheel is minimal. Deep depressions respond to the car with a dull thud, and the front suspension reacts especially loudly to potholes. Even the Luxury model is still filled with tire noise when there is oncoming air flow. The Lux engine is almost silent up to 5000 rpm. Ground clearance is 14.5 cm - when fully loaded, the Lada Kalina hatchback does not cling to the road surface with either the bumper or the bottom.

The Lada Largus body is a one-piece welded structure. It is welded on a robotic line. All body parts that are prone to corrosion are galvanized. The main method of connecting body parts to each other is resistance welding, and electric welding is used in hard-to-reach places. All welds and joints of parts are coated with mastic. When making a body, after connecting its main parts, it is immersed in a special bath with an anti-corrosion compound. Then the primer and paint coating are applied. Hidden cavities are treated with a wax auto-preservative, and the bottom is covered with anti-corrosion mastic.

The body is designed taking into account the most advanced requirements for passive vehicle safety. One of the most important elements of passive safety is the front subframe, which has the property of redistributing impact energy. Car bumpers are made of impact-resistant material that absorbs impact energy. The car doors have metal stamped reinforcements in case of a side impact.

Due to the fact that the body has a very rigid structure, and the plastic interior parts have a gap between each other and are secured with special fasteners, there is virtually no vibration noise in the cabin (the so-called “crickets”).

The LADA Largus windshield is three-layer, it is glued into the body frame and is part of its load-bearing structure. All other car windows are tempered. The side door windows are sliding and, depending on the configuration, have either a manual or electric drive.

The side windows of the rear compartment can be opened slightly (7-seater version).

The luggage compartment doors can be opened completely, or up to two fixed positions provided for this, which is very convenient if the car is in a cramped loading/unloading space.

A modification of the car called LADA Largus Cross has unpainted black front and rear bumpers, as well as protective covers on the wheel arches and sills made of black plastic.

About choosing paint to match the body color

Theoretically, the paint can be selected according to the code that is indicated on the nameplate on the car or is stamped by the VIN code. However, very often the resulting color differs significantly from the body color. This is due to two factors: production features and the abundance of color matching systems (programs). The problem is that there is no uniform production of paint of certain shades. At automobile factories, the desired tone is obtained according to a certain recipe: a package of pigments is added to a barrel with the main color. For each batch of machines a new batch is made. And just as parts can differ from each other by a tolerance, so paints also vary slightly in shade.

At a car plant, you won’t find two barrels with a 100% color match—even cars from neighboring batches have different colors. How to influence the clearance level?

How to increase the clearance in your car? If you install wheels with an increased diameter and profile, then the ground clearance will certainly “increase”. It is interesting to consider an example of such forced action when using wide 215x55xR15 tires. With an increase in profile by 5%, the increase in clearance is 1 mm. Adding another five percent to the profile will increase the clearance by 2.5 mm.

If you are inclined to increase the wheel size, you should take a look at the factory recommendations. The maximum size of factory-installed tires reaches 185x60xR14 for the standard version of the Lada Kalina 2 and 185x55xR15 for the Cross version. Theoretically, it is possible to install a tire size of 195x40xR17, however, one should take into account the risk of tires hitting the wheel arches when driving over uneven surfaces and other consequences for the suspension that can cause its premature wear due to the increased weight of the wheels.

Also, an increased tire height can shift the center of gravity upward, which will worsen handling. Another important aspect is the danger of deformation of the rubber profile of the tire under the influence of the same increased weight. Here again there is a risk of rollover when cornering at increased speed, because body roll inevitably increases.

Let's also note the positive aspects of the larger wheels. This is not only an increase in ground clearance, but also an improved ability of the body as a whole to perceive unevenness in the road surface. The ride of the car is soft and smooth. Now you know how to increase the clearance of Kalina.

Features of the Cross modification

When considering the entire list of modifications of the LADA Kalina, one cannot ignore the outstanding VAZ project - the Cross version. This car is built on the basis of a station wagon, but has an impressive list of additions. Here the developers have placed significant emphasis on the ground clearance, which is an enviable 208 mm. The perimeter of the body is decorated with decorative linings, which simultaneously perform a protective function. On small off-road terrain the car behaves quite confidently. The developers did not forget to use enhanced protection for the engine sump and transmission unit housing.

Kalina Cross allows the owner to install wheels with a larger diameter, which also benefits both ground clearance and the exterior as a whole.

This version of the VAZ-1117 has been produced since December 2007 and immediately became the leader in the Kalina line in terms of load capacity:

• vehicle clearance 160 mm.

The trunk size of the Kalina station wagon is 355 liters, and with the passenger seats removed this figure can be increased to 670 liters.
