The turn signals are constantly on, how to fix it?

The turn signal light is on: we are looking into the problem

Issues discussed in the material:

  • Why do we need turn signals?
  • How turn signals work
  • What to do if the turn signal lights are constantly on
  • What, according to car owners, could be the reason why the turn signal light is constantly on?

The fight for accident-free roads has been going on since the advent of the “self-driving” crew. Being a vehicle of increased danger due to its mass and speed, the car is constantly being improved and supplied with more and more new devices. The turn signal light is an essential element of a modern car. Its operation informs drivers and pedestrians about changes in traffic direction. When the turn signal light is constantly on - instead of blinking - this is already a problem that needs to be solved immediately.

Why do we need turn signals?

Turn indicators are a mandatory attribute of a modern car. They are usually located in the front, back and sides. In some cases, the turn signals “move” to the wing or to the rear view mirrors. Additional lights are installed if the visibility of the main signals is limited, for example, by equipment on special equipment or a trailer as part of a road train. The serviceability of turn signals ensures mutual understanding of drivers on the road.

Now a car enthusiast can check at any time whether the turn signal light is on or not. But it was not always so. Such devices first appeared on cars several decades ago. At first they were complex mechanical products, and their activation was accompanied by a loud crash and frequent breakdowns. The first copies were installed at the driver's request, so they were purchased separately. Sweden has always been ahead of the rest in road safety. It offered various devices for its cars designed to signal the driver's intentions while driving using pop-up flags and other moving elements.

When a car's turn signal light comes on, those around them understand that the driver is about to make a maneuver. Traffic rules require the use of a turn signal to indicate the intention to make a turn, turn or other action associated with a change in the position of the vehicle on the roadway. The turn signal lights up after simply pressing the lever.

If the turn signal bulb breaks, you must signal with your hand extended to the side. This technique is also used by cyclists and horse-drawn cart drivers.

Turn signal bulbs must be in good working order not only for traffic safety, but also in order to save the contents of your wallet, since the timely use of car light alarms is regulated by traffic rules. Violation is punishable by a warning or a fine.

Purpose of the device

Initially, it should be noted that turns operate differently than other lights on a car. They operate in intermittent mode, which is ensured by a product such as the VAZ-2107 turn relay (breaker).

It should also be noted that in addition to intermittent operation, the turn relays emit audible signals in the form of clicks, which help the driver. By these clicks, the driver understands that the device is currently functioning.

In addition to the fact that the breaker is responsible for the functioning of the light alarm necessary for maneuvers, it also allows them to work in emergency mode. The VAZ-2107 uses an electronic relay, the blinking frequency of which lamps depends on the settings of the electronic circuit. Above is a photo of a modern electronic turn signal relay, which is used on VAZ-2107 cars.

Diagnosis of turn signal faults

If one day the turn signals stop functioning, this indicates that it is time to diagnose the car. To do this, there is no need to go to a service station, but you can do everything at home. The following signs indicate that the mechanism has stopped functioning:

  • When turned on, the turn signals light up, but they do not flicker. This type of failure is directly related to the failure of the relay. To correct the problem, you need to replace the breaker.
  • Accelerated or slow flickering of turn signals. Accelerated flickering indicates that the filament of one of the lamps has burned out. Slow flickering indicates that at least one lamp of higher power than recommended is connected to the circuit. With the advent of modern LED lamps, many motorists are eager to install them on their cars. When installing LED lamps in turn signals, they flicker too quickly, this is due to their low power consumption.
  • The devices do not function at all. The reason may be a malfunction of the relay, fuse, steering column switch or hazard warning light button. The connection diagram is designed so that the power for the turn signals passes through the emergency light button. If the button is faulty, then the turns will not function.

How turn signals work

The turn signal light does not stay on all the time. It turns on at certain intervals. Correct operation is determined by a special element that creates the usual flashing yellow signal.

In addition to the direction indicators, the hazard warning lights function in the same way. In this case, the lights light up on both the right and left sides to warn of a malfunction or other problem that has occurred on the road. Uniform flashes are produced by a relay built into the on-board electrical network. The first elements were mechanical and operated by electromagnetic valves that moved a moving contact at a given frequency. They also provided a clicking sound, by which the driver could, without looking at the dashboard, control whether the turn signal was on or off. Modern cars are equipped with an electronic relay, which is cheaper and more durable than an electromechanical one, but here you have to additionally use a speaker and a sound generator to create the desired sound background.

If the turn signal is not working, it is impossible to obtain a diagnostic vehicle inspection card. A traffic police inspector has the right to fine a driver for failure to comply with traffic regulations requiring the use of external lighting devices when driving a vehicle.

Let us examine in more detail the technical structure of the turn signal mechanisms. Despite the apparent diversity, they can be divided into two types:

  • The ancestors of the class are electromagnetic relays.
  • A more advanced and common option is electronic relays.

Electromagnetic relays are found on old cars that were designed and produced in the middle and second half of the last century. Today they live out their lives on Moskvich cars and old Zhiguli cars, or on retro cars. Such devices are the simplest mechanism, consisting of one moving and two fixed contacts.

Turning on the lever supplies power to the actuator, which is hidden in a plastic or metal case. While it is in the active position, the turn signal light is on. After a certain time specified by the design of the element, the nichrome thread in the contact heats up and causes the movable contact to click. The relay turns off, and during this time no current flows through it. The thread cools down and allows the contact to return to its original position. Thus, the light blinks and does not stay on constantly. The relay switches with a fairly loud click. A series of such clicks accompanies the sound of a working signal.

An electronic relay has no mechanical part. The nichrome thread has been replaced by a circuit that produces flash pulses. It works silently, so the manufacturers had to add a speaker for sound.

What to do if the turn signal lights are constantly on

Problems arise despite the significant increase in the reliability and durability of modern mechanisms compared to their “ancestors”. If the turn signal lights do not light up, this indicates either a broken relay or a burnout of the light bulb itself. Another situation is possible when, when turned on, the lamp lights up constantly and does not blink. Such a malfunction is also regarded as a violation of traffic rules.

The operation of the turn signals is accompanied by an indication on the instrument panel and the sound of the speaker. What to do when the indicator light is constantly on or does not light up at all when the turn indicators are turned on?

In the first case, the reason is a relay that does not do its job correctly. To revive it, you can try the old-fashioned method - gently tapping the body. The moving contact may have become stuck in the on position due to wear or moisture entering the housing. If this measure helps, then the relay can be used for some time. Unfortunately, this defect usually repeats itself. You need to think about replacing the part.

How to indicate the direction of travel if the turn signals are faulty

In some cases, it is not possible to use turn signals. For example, when they are faulty, blocked by foreign objects, or not provided for by the design. The traffic rules provide guidance in this regard.

  • a raised hand indicates the driver's intention to brake.
  • a hand extended horizontally to the left warns of the intention to turn left or change lanes to the left.
  • an outstretched right arm or a bent left arm at the elbow, looking up with the hand, speaks of the above maneuvers, but to the right.

In addition to these hand signs, there are also unofficial, but no less useful:

  • Flashing your headlights to an oncoming driver: there is danger ahead or turn off your high beams.
  • A brief activation of the hazard warning lights means gratitude for allowing you into the next row or an apology for a sudden maneuver.

The turn signal light is constantly on: opinions of car owners

  1. The signaling is to blame

“After three years of owning the car, an incident occurred with the turn signal. The turn signal light is constantly on and the arrow on the dashboard does not go out. I got home, turned off the car, the light was still on. I tapped the relay, moved the contacts in the fuse block - it was on again. I had to take the bulbs out because they were already overheating. The next morning I put them back in place and they still burn. And along the way everything worked as it should. In the end, I shook up all the wiring, checked and tightened all the contacts, but the malfunction still appeared periodically. I consulted with specialists and they told me to check the alarm system. It turned out to be her. I removed the control unit and sent it for repair. After this, the defect disappeared, the turn signals light up as usual. If there is non-standard equipment in the car, then it may cause a malfunction.”

Most often it's a relay problem.

“If the turn signal light is constantly on, then the problem is in the relay. There was such a problem - I took it off, cleaned the contacts - it went away. A week later it happened again. Cleaned it again. It's burning again. Then I got tired of it, bought a new one, replaced it and forgot about it for a long time. The price of the issue is pennies, and repairing the old one is just a waste of time. If the spring in the relay is weakened, it cannot be cured.”

I just cut the wires

“The turn signal light is constantly on. I knocked on the relay - to no avail. Actually, I pulled out the relay and it still lights up. Then I decided to check the wires from the signaling, they are just connected to the turn signals, sometimes to the headlights (green wire with a yellow stripe and green wire with a black stripe). I disconnected the wires and everything worked fine. After that, I simply cut them off, and the problem went away forever.”

Rarely, but it happens!

“The relay is not always the cause of malfunctioning turn signals. I once had a short circuit in my brake light bulb. When you press the brake, the entire instrument panel turns on. The defect was floating. It shakes on a bump, the spiral jumps off, and the light bulb works normally. Then it closes again, and try to find out what happened. Until you replace the light bulb and realize what's going on. A rare case that is difficult to diagnose.”

“There are more complicated breakdowns, you’ll break your head, and the relay has nothing to do with it. The cooling radiator leaves the BSK processor, and it pulls the contact block with it, the contacts weaken and the resistance increases. The sensor stops producing correct pulses in 0.5 seconds. This happens all the time. You need to start figuring it out with the rear lights; from them comes a trail of wires, which is laid under the rear fender trim and goes to the fuse box. A wiring harness already goes from it to the ECU. It passes through the entire interior and becomes thinner over time. The ECU perceives most signals based on the resistance value, which greatly depends on the quality of the wiring and contacts. If the resistance is different from the nominal value, then it misunderstands this signal. In some cases, it even issues a command to perform another function. This is the hardest problem to find. Here you need to connect a scanner to troubleshoot the control unit, and then carefully study its readings and look for the cause.”

I had to turn off the alarm

“The turn signal light was constantly on. There was no relay clicking or flashing on the instrument panel. I changed the relay - it didn't help. But when the signaling was turned off, everything started working normally. I had to turn it off completely and drive like that. Now we need to remove the alarm control unit and figure out what’s wrong with it.”

How to make turn signals larger?

There are many tuning methods, the cheapest of which is modifying the headlights. In addition to the basic replacement of low and high beam bulbs, car enthusiasts are often interested in how to make dimensions in turn signals. Some drivers even duplicate the side lights on a VAZ 2110 or VAZ 2114. This is done because the visibility of the lighting on the road surface is not very good, which is very important at night and in bad weather to prevent accidents.

Suitable for VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099, 2113, 2114, 2115 and, I think, for other VAZs too.

In general, I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time, after reading d2 on this topic, I realized that I definitely don’t want to embed a socket from a repeater, but through a relay it’s cool, but I’m not good with electricity, so I decided to install two-pin sockets and light bulbs.

I found the light bulbs in the second store, but I looked for cartridges for a long time, I called 70 stores, in the end I first bought from 2101, and then I accidentally found these.

There are two pluses and one minus from the cartridge. The yellow one (+) was connected to the marker and passed through the holes left after the xenon, the others fit into the turn signal chip without any problems. And I pulled the light bulb out of the stock size.

There is a weak light (5W) for the marker and a bright light (21W) for the turn signal.

Some people's cartridge doesn't fit and they need to file their ears, but for me everything worked out fine.

And what it looks like:

What was required: Two-pin sockets - 200 rubles. Two-pin lamps - 80 rubles. A set of terminals and wires (optional) - 80 rubles.

Some text and photos are taken from here.

Types of jobs

You can modify turn signals on your car in the following ways:

  • supplement the illuminated turn signals with dimensions by moving them from the headlights;
  • insert additional side lamps into the front optics;
  • change the color of the side lamps to yellow or white;
  • use flexible DRLs with a turn signal function.

If the dimensions are yellow, then the light from the turn signals will merge with it, if the color is white, then the turn signals will stand out against the background of the main dimensions

Dimensions in turn signals using a double-filament lamp

Perhaps this is the easiest way to complement the side lights with the glow of the turn signal lights or move them to the latter. To do this, you will need a double-filament lamp, which should be installed instead of the standard one, and a corresponding socket. Instead of using a socket, you can use soldering, simply soldering wires to the terminals of the lamp, but in this case it will be difficult to change it.

The wires going to the turn signal should be connected to the more powerful lamp filaments, and the side light wires to the less powerful ones. You can connect the latter in parallel, then the direction indicators will complement the standard side lights, or simply switch the wires of the “dimensions” to the lamps in the “turn signals”. The last option is the “American” tuning, in which the side lights and direction indicators are combined.

Installation process

Before you understand how to connect turn signals to side lights, keep in mind that there are two main colors of side light optics:

  • yellow (“American”) with the same color of rotating optics will merge;
  • White when turning yellow is better to stand out on the road.

Side lights are inserted into turn signals on a car as follows:

  • in the rotating optics on the VAZ, cut a hole where the cartridge will be inserted. It is acceptable to use the w5w cartridge type. It will fit into a standard 5W incandescent light bulb or LED strip;
  • secure the cartridge in the optic for rotation to avoid moisture, dirt and for durable fastening;
  • To transfer lighting from headlights to a VAZ 2107 or 2109, switch the wires to the newly installed socket. When connecting additional lights without transfer, it is necessary to close the contact in the block that goes to the headlight in a parallel manner.

After such modifications, the car acquires a special charm.
Despite the apparent convenience for the driver, according to the Administrative Code, such a change in configuration leads to confusion among other drivers and even causes accidents.

Also keep in mind that if you install lighting devices equipped with red lights or reflectors in front of the car, as well as devices with operating modes and colors that do not comply with the law, you will face a fine in the following amounts:

  • 2500 rubles if you are a civilian;
  • 15,000-20,000 rubles - official;
  • 40,000-50,000 rubles - legal.

Penalties are regulated by the regulations on the admission of vehicles to operation.

Recently, motorists have resorted to the possibility of equipping side lighting in corners using bulbs with two contacts. But this measure can also interfere with other road users. Thus, manipulating the headlights, no matter how useful they may be for you, may impair your safety. Therefore, do not be surprised by the increasing attention to your car from traffic police officers.

Control block

The simplest and most reliable connection method is the use of a control unit and the abandonment of a relay. This is a fully thought-out unit that does not require any complex manipulations.

But the big problem is that most often motorists come across a Chinese controller. They do not comply with GOST and have low build quality.

If you use control units, then only these:

These manufacturers have proven themselves to be excellent, and the units they offer really work efficiently and effectively. Moreover, the first one on the list is a domestically produced solution.

The second two blocks are German, sold complete with DRLs, and therefore cost significantly more.

How do you solve the problem with connecting DRLs, which have actually become a mandatory element?

Not so long ago, our authorities passed a law stating that, regardless of the time of day, fog lights or DRLs must work on cars. This decision was based on the experience of European specialists, who proved that thanks to working light elements on the vehicle, the percentage of road accidents can be significantly reduced. In this regard, since 2010, changes have been made to GOST and traffic rules, according to which non-working fog lights or missing DRLs can cause a rather “unpleasant” fine (1,500 rubles).

But, despite the fact that the installation of daytime running lights has now become mandatory, some car owners are convinced that they have found a way out of the situation. Particularly enterprising drivers decide to simply connect the lights in the low beam headlights so that they turn on along with the engine, naively believing that this will be enough. Unfortunately, side lights will not help you in any way when meeting with a traffic police officer, since they cannot be used instead of DRLs. Therefore, if you are not the owner of a modern car that already has “hybrid” fog lights with DRLs installed, then there is no escape from installing new light elements.

You can install running lights in a specialized workshop or yourself. If you are confident in your abilities, then before you start work, carefully study the rules for installing running lights on a passenger car.

How to make the turn signals light up like the lights

Hi all! I’ll say right away that I stole the theme from nightcat. I wanted American dimensions, they look good on the 2109. But the methods with two lamps or a two-filament lamp did not suit me at all. Collective farm. I looked through the drive and came across a topic with a relay.

Dimensions "ON" - turns are constantly on. You click the turn signal knob to the left - the left turn signal starts blinking, and the right one is constantly on. And vice versa.

A. Take two ordinary five-pin automotive relays avtopasker.ru/goods/3434.htm; B. are connected according to the scheme ba.d-cd.net/d143bv/480.jpg in the same way on each side, namely:

1. To the wire that goes to the headlight lamp (or take the “+” from the ignition), connect the relay to terminal “30”; 2. Disconnect the positive wire that goes to the turn signal lamp from the block and connect it to terminal “85” of the relay; 3. Connect terminal “87a” of the relay to the turn signal block from where you removed the wire; 4. Connect terminal “86” to ground; 5. We are happy with the result 6. We are indignant that the scheme has not been finalized, because without dimensions (or ignition - whatever you do), the front turn signals will not blink

I connected this thing, as usual, using terminals and heat shrink for easy dismantling. And he also installed it humanly.

Hi all! With the arrival of cold weather, my hands dropped. I don’t have a garage, and you know, it’s hard to poke around in the cold. I try little by little, desire drives the process!)

In the first part

I described the process of dimensions using a simple diagram.
The scheme in general is not bad, but the only drawback was the failure of the front turn signals without dimensions. Over the 2 months of use, this never became a problem for me, but the desire to finish it drove me. Having purchased the necessary components, everything was soldered first for Diman48rus
, then for ourselves. Everything works without any problems. Below is a list of components, this is for people like me, so that there are no unnecessary questions, and the circuit itself.

1. FIVE-contact relay. (Any) - 2 pcs. 2. Capacitor 4700uF*25V - 2 pcs. 3. Diode 5819 - 2 pcs. 4. Relay block. - 2 pcs.

I took SATURN from an old signaling system.

Everything is very clear. The main thing is to sleep properly. I encountered the “Minus” problem, I stupidly placed the minus contact in the wrong place, where it was not there, because of this, for 4 days I thought that I had soldered something wrong.

The next thing I fussed over was options.

Variants of how it all can burn, in what combinations.

How to make the turn signals stay on all the time?

If you want this type of optics to burn constantly, then this can be done at home. Moreover, there is nothing difficult about this, and almost every car enthusiast can cope with such a task. To do this, you simply need to connect the ground wire from the lights to the side light power supply. But remember that this is prohibited by traffic rules. Accordingly, if a traffic police officer catches you in the act, then you will have a serious conversation, including issuing a fine.

Replacing the front crankshaft oil seal on a VAZ 2110

Many motorists have at least once encountered such a problem as oil leaking under the car. There may be several reasons for this.

Every car has turn signals, the main purpose of which is to inform other road users that a maneuver is being performed or intended to be performed. If your car's turn signals are not working, it greatly increases the likelihood of an accident when maneuvering or changing lanes. Why don't turns work on the VAZ 2107? The causes of such a breakdown in frequent cases are nothing more than the turn relay. Today we will pay attention to the question of how to replace this relay on the “seven”.
